  Hi, Is there built in methods into .net framework to do the following: Get role GUID from user name/user GUID Get role name from role GUID So far I have been sending queries to the asp_roles and asp_users tables to obtain that information and I'm wondering if there is a nicer way of doing this? I have the following methods that I store in the ASPUtilities class: getRoleGUID(guid userGuid) { LINQ joins } getRoleGuid(string userName) { LINQ joins } getRoleName(guid roleGuid) { LINQ joins } Thank you EDIT: I have just looked into extending SQLMembershipProvider examples. Few examples completely override the SQLMembershipProvider, but I think what I'm interested is just adding few extra methods to deal with the roles by using LINQ. Is this feasible?

  I've added WCF Service reference to my asp.net application and configured that reference to support asncronious calls. • Custom binding with WCF

  I have a wcf service where i have to implement the call backs and also i need to host the wcf service on the IIS 6.0, since IIS6.0 doesnot support the net.tcp binding, i decided to go for the custom binding. The reasons for going for custom binding is that the service is accessed by different clients in different timezones. Using custom binding i can set the allowed clock skew time to other values other than the default one. Can anyone in the community help me in this regard.

• Instantiating a context in LINQ to Entities

  I've seen two different manners that programmers approach when creating an entity context in their code. The first is like such, and you can find it all over the MSDN code examples: public void DoSomething() { using TaxableEducationEntities context = new TaxableEducationEntities()) { // business logic and whatever else } } The second is to create the context as a private attribute in some class that encapsulates your business logic. So you would have something like: public class Education_LINQ { private TaxableEducationEntities context = new TaxableEducationEntities(); public void DoSomething() { var result = from a in context.luAction select a; // business logic and whatever else } } Which way is more efficient? Assume that you have two methods, one called DoSomething1() and another called DoSomething2(), and both methods incorporate the using statement to open the context and do whatever with it. Were you to call one method after the other, would there be any superfluous overhead going on, since essentially both methods create the context and then clean it up when they're done? As opposed to having just one private attribute that is created when a class object is instantiated, and then in turn cleaned up when the object goes out of scope?

• Can IIS admin change password of Windows Service account

  We have a service account defined for anonymous access which is used for several web sites hosted on the web server. This account has access to several network resources like report server, file servers and so on. While deploying a new web site, we used the same service account for anonymous access. IIS takes the username/password for the account and then a dialog opens for confirm password. Accidently, we gave a wrong password in both the text boxes, the new site with wrong password is working fine but all other previously hosted sites which were using the service account, started giving the unautorized access error. Is it possible that when we entered wrong password for the new web site, the password of the account got reset and all sites stopped functioning?

• Extending DOMDocument and DOMNode: problem with return object

  I'm trying to extend the DOMDocument class so as to make XPath selections easier. I wrote this piece of code: class myDOMDocument extends DOMDocument { function selectNodes($xpath){ $oxpath = new DOMXPath($this); return $oxpath->query($xpath); } function selectSingleNode($xpath){ return $this->selectNodes($xpath)->item(0); } } These methods return a DOMNodeList and a DOMNode object, respectively. What I'd like to do now is to implement similar methods to the DOMNode objects. But obviously if I write a class (myDOMNode) that extends DOMNode, I won't be able to use these two extra methods on the nodes returned by myDOMDocument because they're DOMNode (and not myDOMNode) objects. I'm rather a beginner in object programming, I've tried various ideas but they all lead to a dead-end. Any hints? Thanks a lot in advance.

  I made an automation Add-In for Excel, and I made several functions (formulas). I have a class which header looks like this (it is COM visible): [ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.AutoDual)] [ComVisible(true)] public class Functions {} In a list of methods, I see: ToString(), Equals(), GetHashCode() and GetType() methods. Since all methods of my class are COM visible, I should somehow hide those 4. I succeeded with 3 of them: ToString(), Equals(), GetHashCode() but GetType() cannot be overriden. Here is what I did with 3 of them: [ComVisible(false)] public override string ToString() { return base.ToString(); } [ComVisible(false)] public override bool Equals(object obj) { return base.Equals(obj); } [ComVisible(false)] public override int GetHashCode() { return base.GetHashCode(); } This doesn't work: [ComVisible(false)] public override Type GetType() { return base.GetType(); } Here is the error message in Visual Studio when compile: ..GetType()': cannot override inherited member 'object.GetType()' because it is not marked virtual, abstract, or override So, what should I do to hide the GetType() method from COM?

• Coldfusion 9 installation problem with IIS7

  Windows web server 2008 R2 64 bit, CF9 64 bit, IIS7, ISAPI extensions and filters and II6 metabase compatability installed. OS is on C default, and trying to install CF to D: Testing IIS and it shows index.html correctly from c:\inetpub\wwwroot at http://localhost/index.html Then I install CF to D:\ , single standard server licence, select run with all IIS sites, select C:\inetpub\wwwroot as the web root for administrator, and when it gets to the bit where it is supposed to open up administrator to complete the installation it opens up the browser with a 500 error. Now when I go back to http://localhost/index.html I also get a 500 error, if i uninstall CF I can again reach the html page. CFIDE has been installed in C:\inetpub\wwwroot presumably correctly. Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong please. Update The exact IIS error is HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred. It is running fine locally. but after deployed on the domain server it showing exception XML Parsing Error: no element found Location: http://{MyDomainIP}:{port}/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx Line Number 1, Column 1: I have deployed these reports under the windows authentication . since I tried to give anonymous access so that I can access it, But in IIS I could not found the virtual directory regarding these reports. so where are they deployed ? I could not understand how it is not permitting to the Admin account to show the reports. Please guide me I am using IIS 6.0 , SQL server2008 R2. I am totally new for the this kind of stuff. Edited: how can we give the anonymous access to the SSRS reports? It should not ask for username and password.I know we can do this by IIS , but some how I can not found my SSRS virtual directory. how can i do that ?

  Hi All, I am using .getDeclaredClasses() method to retrieve all the classes that have been defined in object. However, I am not able to retrieve anonymous classes defined in the class. • Django/Python best practice template_dict

  Hi, After just been coding for about 6-9 months. I probably changed my coding style a number of times after reading some code or read best practices. But one thing I haven't yet come a cross is a good why to populate the template_dict. As of now I pass the template_dict across a number of methods (that changes/modifies it) and returns is. The result is that every methods takes template_dict as first argument and the returns it and this in my eyes doesn't seems to be the best solution. An idea is to have a method that handles all the changes. But I'm curios if there's a best practice for this? Or is it "do what you feel like"-type of thing? The 2 things I think is pretty ugly is to send as an argument and return it in all methods. And the just the var name is written xxx number of times in the code :) ..fredrik

• Refactoring a C# derived class with method dependancies

  Hi Folks, I want to get your opinion on this. I have a class which is derived from a base class. I don't have control over the code in the base class and it is critical to the system that I derive from it. In my class I inherite two methods that are critical to the system and are used in pretty much every function, many times. I intend to refactor this derived class and extract some classes from it - this won't be a problem. What I'm not sure about is, is it worth extracting class if I have to constantly make call backs to my main class to access the two methods (or public wrappers to the methods)??? Thanks

• The difference between traditional DLL and COM DLL.

  I am currently studying COM. I found that COM DLL is kind of built upon the traditional DLL infrastructure. When we build COM DLLs, we still rely on the traditional DLL export methods to lead us to the internal COM co-classes. If COM is for component reusing at the binary level, I think the traditional DLL can achieve the same thing. They both expose functions, they are both binary, so what's the point of turning to COM approach? Currently, I have the feeling that the traditional DLL expose methods in a "flat" manner, while the COM DLL expose methods in an "OOP" hierarchy manner. And the OOP manner seems to be a better approach. Could this be the reason why COM prevails? Many thanks.

  Hi. I'm trying to check out the Mylyn project from Eclipse. However, I can't use Eclipse to check out the projects and am having to do it via the command line. I'm behind a firewall so am basing my attempt on http://wiki.eclipse.org/CVS_Howto#CVS_and_firewalls. I'm not very familiar with CVS. As such, most methods in my PoJos return a reference to this so that I can chain methods together declaratively as such (syntactic sugar). myComponent .setID("MyId") .setProperty("One") .setProperty2("Two") .setAssociation(anotherComponent) .execute(); My API does not depend on Spring but I wish to make it 'Spring-Friendly' by being PoJo friendly with zero argument constructors, getters and setters. The problem is that Spring seems to not detect my setter methods when I have a non-void return type. The return type of this is very convenient when chaining together my commands so I don't want to destroy my programmatic API just be to compatible with Spring injection. Is there a setting in Spring to allow me to use non-void setters? Chris

• Is OO design's strength in semantics or encapsulation?

  Object-oriented design (OOD) combines data and its methods. This, as far as I can see, achieves two great things: it provides encapsulation (so I don't care what data there is, only how I get values I want) and semantics (it relates the data together with names, and its methods consistently use the data as originally intended). So where does OOD's strength lie? In constrast, functional programming attributes the richness to the verbs rather than the nouns, and so both encapsulation and semantics are provided by the methods rather than the data structures. I work with a system that is on the functional end of the spectrum, and continually long for the semantics and encapsulation of OO. But I can see that OO's encapsulation can be a barrier to flexible extension of an object. So at the moment, I can see the semantics as a greater strength. Or is encapsulation the key to all worthwhile code?

The ones I've come across appear to be contained in JAR files in matlabroot\java\jar, but I'm not sure what the best way to inspect a JAR file is. Thirdly, are there functions for inspecting the classes, other than viewmethods? Finally, are there any really useful methods that anyone has found?

  Railroad is a great UML tool for Ruby on Rails. It can automatically generate class diagrams of models and controllers. For models, a railroad-generated class diagram shows attributes of each model and the associations between one model and another. A sample diagram can be found here. It is very useful for a developer to see attributes and associations of models. While attributes and associations reveal the inner states and relationships of models, methods specify their behaviours. They are all desirable in a class diagram. I would like railroad to generate a class diagram that also lists methods for models, which will help me to know what each model does. I know methods are displayed in a diagram that is generated for controllers, but I don't see such an option for a diagram of models. Does someone know how to do that with railroad? Or is that possible? Thanks!

  Hi guys, I was just curious as to what the rule of thumb was for models. Generally, I use them only for situations where I need to add/edit or update database entries for an object. However, I'm building an app at the moment that has a "config" table which holds various data, such as last updated, which will control when certain features in the app should be displayed. In this instance, I will mostly need to retrieve data from the config table. Is it worth putting these config methods in model? I'm interested to hear how more experienced coders approach the MVC methodology in CI - example pseudo methods (e.g., what methods relating to the same object you'd use in the model and the controller) would be most helpful.
