  • Migrate existing ROR app to GAE

    - by zengr
I have managed to run a basic rails app1 on App Engine using: http://gist.github.com/268192 So, on my basic app2, I install CE, which works fine on local machine. (communityengine.org) But, when I follow the same steps on my actual app2, where community_engine plugin is installed and all the gems are frozen, the app engine installer script asks for to over write various files like boot.rb, routes.rb, which I don't allow. So, as expected, when I publish the rails + ce app to GAE, it's not published and it also screws the local installation of CE on app2. So, the problem is obvious, CE uses ActiveRecord, and GAE uses DataMapper. So, my question can also be rephrased as: Can we migrate an existing ROR App using Active Record to GAE which uses DataMapper? PS: This is my first project on ROR and GAE.

  • Passing two variables to separate table...associations problem

    - by bgadoci
I have developed an application and I seem to be having some problems with my associations. I have the following: class User < ActiveRecord::Base acts_as_authentic has_many :questions, :dependent => :destroy has_many :sites , :dependent => :destroy end Questions class Question < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :sites, :dependent => :destroy has_many :notes, :through => :sites belongs_to :user end Sites (think of this as answers to questions) class Site < ActiveRecord::Base acts_as_voteable :vote_counter => true belongs_to :question belongs_to :user has_many :notes, :dependent => :destroy has_many :likes, :dependent => :destroy has_attached_file :photo, :styles => { :small => "250x250>" } validates_presence_of :name, :description end When a Site (answer) is created I am successfully passing the question_id to the Sites table but I can't figure out how to also pass the user_id. Here is my SitesController#create def create @question = Question.find(params[:question_id]) @site = @question.sites.create!(params[:site]) respond_to do |format| format.html { redirect_to(@question) } format.js end end

  • [Rails] Calling a method from a view using link_to_function

    - by Jeff
Hello! I'm trying to have an image that when clicked associates the selected guideline to a project. I'm using link_to_function which somewhat behaves but I can not get the method I am calling in the link_to_function to redirect to another page. Is there a better way to do this? Below is a bit of my code. I can paste in additional parts if necessary: <% @guidelines.each do |guideline| %> <tr> <td align='center'><%= link_to_function image_tag("../../../images/icons/action_add.png"), add_guideline(guideline) %></td> <td><%=h guideline.title %></td> My GuidelinesController.helper method looks like this: def add_guideline(guideline) @project = Project.find(params[:project_id]) @project.guidelines << guideline @project.save redirect_to dashboard_path #doesn't work :( end

  • Advanced Rails Routing of short URL's and usernames off of root url

    - by Michael Waxman
I want to have username URL's and Base 58 short URL's to resources both off of the root url like this: http://mydomain.com/username #=> goes to given user http://mydomain.com/a3x9 #=> goes to given story I am aware of the possibilities of a user names conflicting with short urls, and I have a workaround, but what I can't figure out is the best way to set this up in rails. Can I do it in rails routes? Should I do something with a piece of Rack middleware? Should I set up a routing controller? Please let me know the best way to do this. Thanks so much!

  • Trying to manually recreate a simple generate/scaffolding script

    - by montooner
I'm trying to understand Rails from the ground up. I want to learn how to manually create basic show-all/show-single/CRUD functionality in the framework. I currently am working on the display-all functionality, but am stopped by an error when I try to request all items in the Products db Here are the steps I've taken so far: script/generate controller Products script/generate model Products rake db:migrate modified products_controller.rb to add: def index() { @products = Product.all} (error: uninitialized constant ProductsController::Product) ideally, dump all orders in the view What's the fix?

  • question regarding rails framework code

    - by Joseph Misiti
I noticed that the code in the rails framework is using the following convention all over the place: class SomeClass class << self def some function end end end rather than class SomeClass end def SomeClass.function end and class SomeClass def self.somefunction end end What is the reason for this design choice? They all seem to accomplish them same thing

  • resource_controller get rid of setting flash notice?

    - by goodwill
I am talking about rails resource_controller gem plugin here: Basically when I am doing json format, I would like to completely suppress the flash notice if possible, trying to call flash "" will fail, while calling flash[:notice]="" doesn't look really nice either. Is there some better approach?

  • A few questions about a Rails model for a simple addressbook app

    - by user284194
I have a Rails application that lists information about local services. My objectives for this model are as follows: 1. Require the name and tag_list fields. 2. Require one or more of the tollfreephone, phone, phone2, mobile, fax, email or website fields. 3. If the paddress field has a value, then encode it with the Geokit plugin. Here is my entry.rb model: class Entry < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :name, :tag_list validates_presence_of :tollfreephone or :phone or :phone2 or :mobile or :fax or :email or :website acts_as_taggable_on :tags acts_as_mappable :auto_geocode=>{:field=>:paddress, :error_message=>'Could not geocode physical address'} before_save :geocode_paddress validate :required_info def required_info unless phone or phone2 or tollfreephone or mobile or fax or email or website errors.add_to_base "Please have at least one form of contact information." end end private def geocode_paddress #if paddress_changed? geo=Geokit::Geocoders::MultiGeocoder.geocode (paddress) errors.add(:paddress, "Could not Geocode address") if ! geo.success self.lat, self.lng = geo.lat,geo.lng if geo.success #end end end Requiring name and tag_list work, but requiring one (or more) of the tollfreephone, phone, phone2, mobile, fax, email or website fields does not. As for encoding with Geokit, in order to save a record with the model I have to enter an address. Which is not the behavior I want. I would like it to not require the paddress field, but if the paddress field does have a value, it should encode the geocode. As it stands, it always tries to geocode the incoming entry. The commented out "if paddress_changed?" was not working and I could not find something like "if paddress_exists?" that would work. Help with any of these issues would be greatly appreciated. I posted three questions pertaining to my model because I'm not sure if they are preventing each other from working. Thank you for reading my questions.

  • Using a helper method in a mailer that is defined in a controller

    - by Horace Loeb
The helper method current_user is defined and made available as a helper in ApplicationController like this: class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base helper_method :current_user def current_user return @current_user if defined?(@current_user) @current_user = current_user_session && current_user_session.record end end My question is how I can use the current_user helper method in a mailer template (obviously it will always return nil, but I'm trying to render a partial that depends on it). Normally when I want to use helpers in a mailer, I do something like add_template_helper(SongsHelper), but since the helper is defined in a class instead of a module I'm not sure what to do

  • Nested Object Forms not working as expected

    - by Craig Walker
I'm trying to get a nested model forms view working. As far as I can tell I'm doing everything right, but it still does not work. I'm on Rails 3 beta 3. My models are as expected: class Recipe < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :ingredients, :dependent => :destroy accepts_nested_attributes_for :ingredients attr_accessible :name end class Ingredient < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :name, :sort_order, :amount belongs_to :recipe end I can use Recipe.ingredients_attributes= as expected: recipe = Recipe.new recipe.ingredients_attributes = [ {:name=>"flour", :amount=>"1 cup"}, {:name=>"sugar", :amount=>"2 cups"}] recipe.ingredients.size # -> 2; ingredients contains expected instances However, I cannot create new object graphs using a hash of parameters as shown in the documentation: params = { :name => "test", :ingredients_attributes => [ {:name=>"flour", :amount=>"1 cup"}, {:name=>"sugar", :amount=>"2 cups"}] } recipe = Recipe.new(params) recipe.name # -> "test" recipe.ingredients # -> []; no ingredient instances in the collection Is there something I'm doing wrong here? Or is there a problem in the Rails 3 beta?

  • Limiting the Amount of Tags for Acts as Taggable On

    - by bob
Hello, I am wondering how to limit the amount of tags, the tag_cloud function returns for this plugin. http://github.com/collectiveidea/acts-as-taggable-on Also, I would like to know how to order it so that it orders the tags by the highest count. So the most popular are at the top. I tried to do @tags = Post.tag_counts_on(:tags, :limit = 5) but that did not work. Controller: class PostController < ApplicationController def tag_cloud @tags = Post.tag_counts_on(:tags) end end View: <% tag_cloud @tags, %w(css1 css2 css3 css4) do |tag, css_class| %> <%= link_to tag.name, { :action => :tag, :id => tag.name }, :class => css_class %> <% end %> Thanks!

  • Thinking Sphinx - sorting by a string attribute gets out of sync when changes are made

    - by Scott Brown
I have a "restaurants" table with a "name" column. I've defined the following index: indexes "REPLACE(UPPER(restaurants.name), 'THE ', '')", :as => :restaurant_name, :sortable => true ... because I want to sort the restaurant names without respect to the prefix "The ". My problem is that whenever one of these records is updated (in any way) the new record jumps to the top of the sort order. If another record is updated, it also jumps ahead of the rest. I end up with two lists: a list of restaurants that have been updated since the last re-indexing and a list of those that haven't. Each respective list is in alphabetical order, but I don't understand why the overall list is getting segregated this way. I do have a delayed delta index set up, and I assume the issue is related to this.

  • Redirect 'myapp.com' to 'www.myapp.com' in rails without using htaccess?

    - by Allan L.
Using Morph Labs' Appspace to deploy a site means no automated way to redirect 'myapp.com' to 'www.myapp.com' (and no access to .htacess). Is there an in-rails way to do this? Would I need a plugin like subdomain-fu? More specifically, I'm trying to do something like: 'myapp.com' = 'www.myapp.com' 'myapp.com/session/new' = 'www.myapp.com/session/new' Basically, I always want the 'www' subdomain prepended on every request (because the SSL cert specifically has a common name of 'www.myapp.com').

  • Get used color names from image

    - by atmorell
    Hello, I would like to check what colors is present in a image. This will be stored in the database and used for a search form. (red=1, green=1, blue=0, yellow=1, black=1, white=1 etc.) img = Magick::Image.read('phosto-file.jpg').first img = img.quantize(10 h = img.color_histogram pp h {red=12815, green=18494, blue=15439, opacity=0=>13007, red=44662, green=47670, blue=51967, opacity=0=>18254, red=17608, green=43331, blue=48321, opacity=0=>11597, red=21105, green=25865, blue=39467, opacity=0=>10604, red=15125, green=36629, blue=22824, opacity=0=>10223, red=52102, green=42405, blue=10063, opacity=0=>12928, red=39043, green=28726, blue=40855, opacity=0=>7728, red=10410, green=8880, blue=7826, opacity=0=>13795, red=25484, green=25337, blue=24235, opacity=0=>7351, red=44485, green=12617, blue=11169, opacity=0=>14513} How do I convert the 10 values to color names? red, green, NOMATCH, yellow, black, white etc. Only need the rough color name - not LimeGreen but Green etc. Best regards.   • How will Arel affect rails' includes() 's capabilities.

    - by Tim Snowhite
I've looked over the Arel sources, and some of the activerecord sources for Rails 3.0, but I can't seem to glean a good answer for myself as to whether Arel will be changing our ability to use includes(), when constructing queries, for the better. There are instances when one might want to modify the conditions on an activerecord :include query in 2.3.5 and before, for the association records which would be returned. But as far as I know, this is not programmatically tenable for all :include queries: (I know some AR-find-includes make t#{n}.c#{m} renames for all the attributes, and one could conceivably add conditions to these queries to limit the joined sets' results; but others do n_joins + 1 number of queries over the id sets iteratively, and I'm not sure how one might hack AR to edit these iterated queries.) Will Arel allow us to construct ActiveRecord queries which specify the resulting associated model objects when using includes()? Ex: User :has_many posts( has_many :comments) User.all(:include => :posts) #say I wanted the post objects to have their #comment counts loaded without adding a comment_count column to `posts`. #At the post level, one could do so by: posts_with_counts = Post.all(:select => 'posts.*, count(comments.id) as comment_count', :joins => 'left outer join comments on comments.post_id = posts.id', :group_by => 'posts.id') #i believe #But it seems impossible to do so while linking these post objects to each #user as well, without running User.all() and then zippering the objects into #some other collection (ugly) #OR running posts.group_by(&:user) (even uglier, with the n user queries)

  • How to do case-insensitive order in Rails with postgresql

    - by brad
I am in the process of switching my development environment from sqlite3 to postgresql 8.4 and have one last hurdle. In my original I had the following line in a helper method; result = Users.find(:all, :order => "name collate NOCASE") which provided a very nice case-insensitive search. I can't replicate this for postgresql. Should be easy - any ideas? Thanks.
