• Screen tearing oddity when one window is on top of another with Radeon

  I have a mobility radeon 5850 running 11.04 and am running catalyst 11.10 drivers. I noticed that whenever I have two windows open, one of top of the other, scrolling results in minor screen tearing, usually around the border of the window on the bottom. When I minimize or close the bottom the tearing goes away. I have tear free desktop enabled and tried looking for this specific issue but couldn't find anyone else with it. It happens in both Unity and Classic. Is there any fix for this?

• Orthographic Zooming with 0,0 at top/left

  I'm trying to implement zooming on my 2D game. Since it's using orthographic projection, I thought it would be easy to implement zooming. After looking around the internet, I found a bunch of explanations and samples on how to do this if (0,0) is the center of the screen with the orthographic projection. The problem is, my ortho projection has (0,0) at the top-left (similar to XNA/Monogame, and a couple others). I could not find any examples about how to implement zooming to the center of the screen when the center is not (0,0). And help/links/code examples would be greatly appreciated.

• Bluetooth is always on after waking from hibernate

  I have a problem that whenever my machine, Lenovo W520, wakes from hibernate the bluetooth starts. It does not matter what the situation was before hibernate. After hibernate the bluetooth is always on. Even in bluetooth settings it says that the bluetooth is off, but I can clearly see that the bluetooth LED is on. I would like to know what the problem is. Is it a hardware problem or software? How can I fix it?

• rc.local is not always executed upon boot

  Hey, I have some weird problem with the rc.local file which is located in /etc/rc.local the thing is that it is not always running when I boot up the laptop. Maybe every second time, I haven't counted. Anyway when that happens I have to manually go to terminal and type sudo /etc/init.d/rc.local start, which kinda kills the purpose of having this script. Anyone know what the problem could be? EDIT Since this wasn't obvious. This is an issue where I make a fresh boot up. Which mean I have shut down the computer. And next time when I boot up the computer, the rc.local file is randomly deciding whether it will automatically start or not. Here's a copy of what my rc.local file contains echo -n 255 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/sensitivity echo level 2 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan touch /home/starcorn/Desktop/foo rfkill block bluetooth exit 0

• Always disable the 8.3 name creation on Windows before installing WebCenter Content or WebLogic Server

  You should always disable the 8.3 name creation feature when installing WebCenter Content on a Windows platform. The installs will normally work without it disabled, but you will find the weird 8.3 file and directory names in all the config files. Disabling it can also improve performance. On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and above you can do it with this command: fsutil.exe behavior set disable8dot3 1 To make sure it is disabled you can run this command to check: fsutil.exe behavior query disable8dot3 If the 8.3 file name creation is disabled you will see the following output from the command: The registry state of NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation is 1 (Disable 8dot3 name creation on all volumes). • Why doesn't LightDM always doesn't start under XEN

  When I use XEN on Ubuntu (12.10), I have a problem that lightdm sometimes doesn't start when I boot up, I have to log in on the TTY and use sudo service lightdm restart, sometimes several times. Some of the time I get a mouse cursor and a blinking underscore in the top left of the (otherwise black) screen, but after restarting lightdm a few times it eventually comes up properly. I've tried this with XEN from the repos (version 4.1), XEN 4.2 built from source, an NVIDIA card and a radeon card (not using fglrx, which I can't seem to make work under XEN), the results are more or less the same. I can't see anything obvious in my Xorg.log, but I'm not really sure what to look for. Anyone had similar problems or luck getting xen working? Thanks in advance.

  This question already has an answer here: Will having multiple domains improve my seo? 7 answers I'm running a website for a global company, and although we rank first in search engine results here in Ireland, a search done from other countries doesn't rank us as highly. If I register the domain at other top level domain names (eg. example.co.uk, example.nor etc.) and then just mirror the .com site to those other domains, will I be penalised by search engines for having duplicate content? Has anyone else faced a similar problem and found a way to capture the global search engine? Thanks.

• Implementing top view physics using box2D

  How can top view physics games be done in box2D? One idea I have is to set the linear velocity of an object manually or to alter the linear and angular damping as my object moves over different surfaces. For example if my object is over a wet surface it'll have less linear damping and if it is over rough surface it'll have more damping. And to see if my object has fallen over an edge I'll try to use an AABB and check if its still inside or manually see if object.x > boundary.x etc. Is there any better way?

  Occasionally, my Conky window jumps to the top and covers all other windows. The only way to solve it is to kill and restart Conky. This happens at seemingly random times while using Compiz features. It seems especially common while using the scale plugin's window picker, but no plugin consistently causes this problem every time. I've seen several questions that appear related on the surface. However, all those questions are solved by ensuring that Conky starts after Compiz. In my case, my problems occur even if Conky starts after Compiz.

• Game has noticeable frame drops but when through a profiler it always runs smooth

  I'm trying to optimize my PC game but I can find the bottleneck since every time I run it through a profiler (gDEBugger) it runs smooths. When running outside gDEBugger I get these annoying hiccups. It's not just the graphics, the sound also gets choppy. The drops are inconsistent across runs, i.e, sometimes I run the same scenario and get no drops at all, sometimes I get a few drops, and others the game is consistently slow. The only constant is: when running through gDEBugger I ALWAYS get a smooth run. I'm suspecting something outside my game is interfering and causing these drops, but what in the hell does gDEBugger do that nullifies these drops? A higher process priority? Any ideas?   i use a lenovo y560 and has ubunto 12.04 and win 7 installed when i boot into ubunto i find that the ati car is always on which drains the battery and overheats the system is there any to switch off the ati graphics and use intel hd in ubuntu ati hd 5730 is the graphics card that i use and it has switchable graphics in it. in bios the only two options for video adapter is discrete and switchable after installing ati driver from amd website i am getting a commamd prompt as log in screen first error message comes as Your system is running in low-graphics mode with options to run in low graphics mode this time reconfigure exit all three options i am stuck i need to manually reboot the system

• How do I tackle top down RPG movement?

  I have a game that I am writing in Java. It is a top down RPG and I am trying to handle movement in the world. The world is largely procedural and I am having a difficult time tackling how to handle character movement around the world and render the changes to the screen. I have the world loaded in blocks which contains all the tiles. How do I tackle the character movement? I am stumped and can't figure out where I should go with it. EDIT: Well I was abstract with the issue at hand. Right now I can only think of rigidly sticking everything into a 2D array and saving the block ID and the player offset in the Block or I could just "float" everything and move about between tiles so to speak.

• Enemy Spawning method in a Top-Down Shooter

  I'm working on a top-down shooter akin to DoDonPachi, Ikaruga, etc. The camera movement through the world is handled automatically with the player able to move inside of the camera's visible region. Along the way, enemies are scripted to spawn at particular points along the path. While this sounds straightforward, I could see two ways to define these points: Camera's position: 'trigger' spawning as the camera passes by the points Time along path: "30 seconds in, spawn 2 enemies" In both cases, the camera-relative positions would be defined as well as the behavior of the enemy. The way I see it, the way you define these points will directly affect how the 'level editor', or what have you, will work. Would there be any benefits of one approach over the other?

  im looking to install 10.04 over top the 11.04 partition, it wouldnt let. keeps giving me a "root file system not found" error ever time i manually select partition. (i have a win7 partition) 11.04 popped up after upgrade that my hardware isnt supported for unity. and i cant boot into it, hangs up on purple screen right after boot menu. if anyone can post a link to a how to guide or put it on here, would be great? im trying to take advantage of my nvidia geforce gt 120m (its a laptop) to play around with cuda/c++ programming!

Either you do a quick Google search, pull together the most popular frameworks and libraries and work your way from their tutorials towards what you want to achieve (top-down). • Should a developer always use version control

  I've heard statements to the effect of: "Well it's just me working on this project so I don't need to put it under source control" as well as, "There is no need to work version controlled on this project, it's so small". It is my opinion that no matter how small the project is, so long as it's adding value to the client (and they are paying for it too) that we, the developer(s), should version control it; especially since its company policy. Am I insane or does my standpoint make sense. Question: Should development work always be version controlled?
