• Creating a filesystem on a file in linux for software development purposes

Unfortunately the past developer didn't obey naming conventions so file includes are of the form "/file/At/SomethingHere.php" when on disk the path is actually "/File/at/Somethinghere.php". I do not want to use Windows for development but the filesystems I use (ext2, ext3 ) are case sensitive. I think the solution will be to create a filesystem like FAT 32 or similar, but I am somewhat clueless how to accomplish that. Starting to read up on DD and fdisk to figure out if those are the correct tools I will need.

• Hot video card in server

  Not sure if this belongs here or Superuser (I looked at Superuser -- suspect there are more hardware gurus here). I have a server that sits in a cabinet. It's connected to a small screen that is normally off. However, the video card is running at about 210 F all the time. The rest of the PC is pretty cool (getting temps from SpeedFan). Any thoughts on a way to quiet/calm/cool the video card since it's never really doing anything anyway? I'm usually logged out on the server, and no screen saver defined. Windows is already set to turn off the screen for power saving at 5 minutes.

• Cant register this user

  I wanted to ask this question on meta, but it said, I have to log in first (which is where I have the problem!) I answered a question with this user. But when I tried to register and click on the stack exchange icon, it only displays three dots (animated) and never comes back. I suspected a firefox problem so I tried firefox on windows: And yes, I was able to create an account linked with my other accounts ( http://unix.stackexchange.com/users/27867/holgero and http://stackoverflow.com/users/1779245/holgero ) when I ran the latest firefox version under windows 7 in a virtual box. Then I upgraded my linux firefox to the newest version and deleted the other account under windows again. But still I cannot register this account ( http://superuser.com/users/177338/holgero ). On unix.stackexchange or stackoverflow I never had any problems with the registration, superuser seems to be different. So, how do I register this user and have it linked with my other stackexchange accounts?

• How can I use fetchmail (or another email grabber) with OSX keychain for authentication?

  Every fetchmail tutorial I've read says putting your email account password clear-text in a config file is safe. However, I prefer security through layers (since, if my terminal is up and someone suspecting such email foolery slides over and simply types "grep -i pass ~/.*" then, oops, all my base are belong to them!). Now, with msmtp (as opposed to sendmail) I can authenticate using the OSX keychain. Is there an email 'grabber' that lets me use Keychains (specifically the OSX keychain) or at least, that lets me MD5 the password? This is a duplicate of my unanswered question on serverfault. I've put it on superuser because I'm doing this on a personal computer (viz. with OSX) so it's more of a superuser question.

  I'm having trouble installing Windows 7 onto my old laptop. The problem appears to be the laptop's DVD-ROM no longer seems to work. Sucks. So, I'm trying to figure out how to get a bootable USB with my Windows 7 DVD info onto it. I found this link here on superuser.com: http://superuser.com/questions/66948/place-a-bootable-iso-on-a-usb-drive That looks good, except for the detail about making the USB bootable. It said that the OS you're making it bootable on must be the same as the machine you're going to be installing it on. I can't do that. The machine I would make it bootable from is a 64-bit version of Windows 7. The target machine is 32-bit. So, how's this going to work?

• How to copy Netscape email

  I think I have the Netscape mail-directory from old computer, how do I copy it to new computer? (Netscape 7.1 Mail, Thunderbird or Seamonkey). I think I have the files in Olduserbackup\xjuwtwtb.slt\Mail I create a new mail account with server pop.superuser.com, and find a directory with that name in C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Profiles\default\ou6umlif.slt\Mail I replace the files with those from the backup, but Netscape still shows pop.superuser.com in its interface. Is there some kind of registry setting somewhere I will have to change?

• How to copy/paste LARGE amounts of text in Windows

  I am not sure if this is more suited for Superuser or Stackoverflow, but here goes... A little bit of background: I'm learning SQL and was trying to make a very large table which I could use for optimization tests. Something generic with random values. I created a little Java program to do just that, and was able to put out a text file with 100,000 lines, each line being an SQL INSERT statement for a new random record. However, with anything much bigger than 100,000 lines, I had problems either opening/using the text file in any text editor, or copying/pasting the text to the windows clipboard and then into SQL Developer so I could execute it as a script. I'm probably overlooking something really obvious, or doing something really stupid. There has got to be a better way to do this, but I couldn't find anything through Google or Stackoverflow or Superuser. Thanks!

• How can I generate a list of appendices with LaTeX, seperate from table of contents (toc)

  LaTeX' appendix environment formats sections differently and uses a different enumeration in the table of contents: \begin{appendix} \section{superuser} \dots{} .... Shows up as       A       superuser            11 in the \tableofcontents. Unfortunately, I have to use a different style: the appendix is not to show up in the table of contents, but in a seperate listing right before the appendix. I see the following options to solve this: suppress output in tableofcontents and somehow recreate the part on a different page generate a custom listing of specified / the following section manually create a list with the same formatting of the tableofcontents I use scrartcl as document class. PS: appedix / appendices is not a tag yet

• What is the correct way to use Chef-server's 'validation key'?

  It seems to me that the recommended way of adding clients to a chef server - or my understanding of it - is flawed. from the docs: When the chef-client runs, it checks if it has a client key. If the client key does not exist, it then attempts to "borrow" the validation client's identity to register itself with the server. In order to do that, the validation client's private key needs to be copied to the host and placed in /etc/chef/validation.pem. So the "validation key" is basically the superuser credential, allowing anyone who possesses it full access to the chef server? Am I reading this right? Surely the correct model would be for clients to generate their own keypair, and submit the public key to the chef server. Clients should never need access to this superuser "validation key". How can I do it in this, more secure, manner?

  This question is connected to my other question but I changed the logic a bit. I have models like this: from django.contrib.auth.models import Group class Category(models.Model): (...) editors = ForeignKey(Group) class Entry(models.Model): (...) category = ForeignKey(Category) Now let's say User logs into admin panel and wants to change an Entry. How do I limit the list of Entries only to those, he has the right to edit? I mean: How can I list only those Entries which are assigned to a Category that in its "editors" field has one of the groups the User belongs to? What if User belongs to several groups? I still need to show all relevant Entries. I tried experimenting with changelist_view() and queryset() methods but this problem is a bit too complex for me. I'm also wondering if granular-permissions could help me with the task, but for now I have no clue. I came up only with this: First I get the list of all Groups the User belongs to. Then for each Group I get all connected Categories and then for each Category I get all Entries that belong to these Categories. Unfortunately I have no idea how to stitch everything together as filter() parameters to produce a nice single QuerySet.

• Running a Model::find in for loop in cakephp v1.3

  Hi all, How can I achieve the following result in cakephp: In my application a Topic is related to category, category is related to city and city is finally related to state in other words: topic belongs to category, category belongs to city , city belongs to state.. Now in the Topic controller's index action I want to find out all the topics and it's city and state. How can I do this. I can easily do this using a custom query ($this-Model-query() function ) but then I will be facing pagination difficulties. • Type casting in C++ by detecting the current 'this' object type

  My question is related to RTTI in C++ where I'm trying to check if an object belongs to the type hierarchy of another object. The BelongsTo() method checks this.   For example if I have 1) host adress 2) login 3) password, I am entering by SSH on ruby on rails hosting, then how can i be sured that this hosting belongs to a specific domain? for example how can I know if www.site.com - belongs to some specific hosting to which I have access. • CakePHP access indirectly related model - beginner's question

I have read most of the book CakePHP's website. and googled for all I'm worth, so I presume I am missing something obvious! The Question When editing a 'log item' at www.mydomain/log_items/edit I am presented with the view you would all suspect; namely the columns of the log_items table with the appropriate textfields/select boxes etc. I would also like to incorporate select boxes to choose the client, sub-client, project and sub-project in the 'log_items' edit view. Ideally the 'sub-client' select box should populate itself depending upon the 'client' chosen, the 'project' select box should also populate itself depending on the 'sub-client' selected etc, etc. I guess the way to go about populating the select boxes with relevant options is Ajax, but I am unsure of how to go about actually accessing a model from the child view of a indirectly related model, for example how to create a 'sub-client' select box in the 'log_items' edit view. However, I noticed in the database schema - which is downloadable from the site above link - that the database tables don't have any foreign keys, so now I'm wondering if I'm going about things in the correct manner.   Today, I have one very simple question based on following image. A full disclaimer is that I have no idea why it is like that. I tried to reach out to few of my friends who know a lot about SQL Server but no one has any answer. Here is the question: If you go to server properties and click on Advanced you will see the following screen. Under the Parallelism section if you noticed there are four options: Cost Threshold for Parallelism Locks Max Degree of Parallelism Query Wait I can clearly understand why Cost Threshold for Parallelism and Max Degree of Parallelism belongs to Parallelism but I am not sure why we have two other options Locks and Query Wait belongs to Parallelism section. I can see that the options are ordered alphabetically but I do not understand the reason for locks and query wait to list under Parallelism. Here is the question for you – Why Locks and Query Wait options are listed under Parallelism section in SQL Server Advanced Properties? Please leave a comment with your explanation. • XNA Seeing through heightmap problem

  I've recently started learning how to program in 3D with XNA and I've been trying to implement a Terrain3D class(a very simple height map). I've managed to draw a simple terrain, but I'm getting a weird bug where I can see through the terrain. This bug happens when I'm looking through a hill from the map. Here is a picture of what happens: I was wondering if this is a common mistake for starters and if any of you ever experienced the same problem and could tell me what I'm doing wrong. • Samba new file ownership, permissions configuration

  I have recently installed Samba on my server. Now I have a question about permissions and how to set it up. Currently I mount the Samba shared drive to my laptop with this line in /etc/fstab: //<host>/share /mnt/melka-server-data/ cifs username=<usrname> password=<passwd> _netdev 0 0 This works, as I can read from the files and create them (as root). The problem is when I want to create files as a regular user. I always get a Permission Denied error. When I create a file as root, it still belongs to nobody, but at least I can write into it. What am I missing? I didn't notice anything in Samba config that would be related to this and I don't like the idea of having to log on as root in order to copy files.. Thanks

• jQuery Plugin Overwriting Parameters

  Hey Everyone, This maybe a very mundane question, but this is the first jQuery plugin that I write and I'm a bit fuzzy on understanding the scope rules in Javascript. I'm trying to write an simple jQuery plugin that wraps around the Stack Overflow API. I'm starting off by trying to work with the Flair API. I wanted to make the plugin as configurable as possible so that you can easily pass it the domain and user id, and generate multiple Flairs. var superUser = $.jStackOverflow.flair({domain:"superuser.com", id: 30162, parentId:'#su-flair'}); var stackOverflow = $.jStackOverflow.flair({domain:"stackoverflow.com", id: 55954, parentId:'#so-flair'}); The problem is, when it makes the second call, its somehow using the correct domain and id parameters, but the parentId field that it's using in the callback function to create the html, is using the first parameter. I've noticed that music played over my BT setup sometimes pitch bends in ways I don't remember the original doing, and I'm wondering if SBC has something to do with it. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 on a Mac Pro, connecting to a pair of Sony DR-BT50's. Is there a way to inspect which Bluetooth codec pulseaudio is using, what codecs both ends of the bluetooth link support?
