• How do I develop browser plugins with cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility in mind?

  My company currently has a product which relies on a custom, in-house ActiveX control. The technology it employs (TWAIN) is itself cross-platform by design, but our solution is obviously limited to Internet Explorer on Windows. Long term we would like to become cross-browser and cross-platform (i.e., support other browsers on Windows, support the Macintosh or Linux). Obviously if we wanted to support Firefox on Windows I would need to write a plugin for it. But if we wanted to support the Macintosh, how do I attack that? Is it possible to compile a version of the Firefox plugin that runs on the Mac? Would I be remiss to not also support Safari on the Mac? Are there any plugins which are cross-browser on a platform? (i.e., can any browsers run plugins for other browsers) Since TWAIN is so low-level to the operating system, I do not think Java would be a solution in any capacity, but I could be wrong. What do people generally do when they want to support multiple platforms with a process that will need to be cross-platform and cross-browser compatible?

  Why browser vendors make their own css properties, even they know these will not pass the w3c validation? What is the purpose? is for their own testing, or for web developers, ot to demonstrate browser capabilities to the world and to the W3C organizations and to CSS development team of W3C? is it like a beta version of demonstration? if i use any browser specific for now can they remove that property's support from future versions.will i have to edit my css in future for example: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/CSS_Reference/Mozilla_Extensions

• Silverlight 4 Out-of-browser application into the browser ?

  Hi guys, I just lost 5 hours looking for a answer which i haven't been able to find :p First, I'd like to force a trusted application (i need to access the file system) to display into the browser. Based on what i found on google a trusted application must be installed and launched as a desktop application (also called out-of-browser application). So, i want to have an installed application on the client side but meanwhile, the user must also be able to start this same application into a browser window when he goes on my web site. Is this possible ? Second, I'd like to give to the user the possibility to start the application from the browser. To be clear be the application is installed on the client computer but i want a button on my web site which starts the desktop application. How can i do that ? Thanks

  I have a dirt simple little function that launches the blackberry browser on a streaming media file in order to launch the built in media player. Everything works fine but there is this annoying dialog every time from the browser asking me if I want to save or open the file. My answer is always "open" the file so is there a way I can make it default and not bring up the dialog each time?   It's a bit complicated this one... Lets say I have a listing of PDF files displayed in the user's browser. Each filename is a link pointing not to the file, but to an ASP page, say <--a href="viewfile.asp?file=somefile.pdf">somefile.pdf</a> I want viewfile.asp to fetch the file (I've done that bit OK) but I then want the file to be loaded by the browser as if the user had opened the PDF file directly. • Browser-based application or stand-alone GUI app?

  I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't find it. What are the benefits/limitations of using a browser-based interface for a stand-alone application vs. using a normal GUI framework? I'm working on a Python program currently implement with wxPython for the GUI. The application is simply user-entry forms and dialogs. I am considering moving to PyQt because of the widgets it has (for future expansion), then I realized I could probably just use a browser to do much of the same stuff. The application currently doesn't require Internet access, though it's a possibility in the future. I was thinking of using Karrigell for the web framework if I go browser-based. Edit For clarification, as of right now the application would be browser-based, not web-based. All the information would be stored locally on the client computer; no server calls would need to be made and no Internet access required (it may come later though). It would simply be a browser GUI instead of a wxPython/PyQt GUI. Hope that makes sense.

  I recently encountered a printing issue in Firefox that eventually turned out to be a problem with the fieldset tag we wrapped the entire page in. (Bugzilla: Bug 471015) All browsers have their own rendering quirks and issues, but it can be very hard to know what's causing different behaviors. Sure, you can Google, but that's often taking a shot in the dark about what you think is causing the problem. It also doesn't stop you from having to sort through multiple complains about the same behavior before you find someone who has the issue your looking for. Are there any websites out there that let you search for rendering behavior issues by browser version, browser function, css tag, or html tag? I've seen this SO Question, Wanted: Resource for documented Cross-Browser differences, but I'd like to find something more detailed that includes browser bugs.

• Conditional skin file in ASP.Net Theme based off of browser

The theme stays the same, I just want skin A to apply when a certain browser is used, and skin B when another browser is used.   Hi, what could be the reason if browser is showing progress bar (stuck at half) as if it is still trying to load something, even after the page is rendered. this is an intranet ASP.NET website. how can I find out the reason? the browser is IE8. actually this started after the browser is upgraded from IE6 to IE8. not sure if this issue has anything to do with browser upgrade. will the tools like Fiddler can help to find out what it is still trying to load? thanks in advance.

  Is there a way to execute python code in a browser, other than using Jython and an applet? The execution does not have to deal with anything related to graphics. For example, just sum all the digits of a binary 1Gb file (chosen by the browser user) and then return the result to the server. I am aware that python can be executed remotely outside a browser, but my requirement is to be done inside a browser. For sure, I take for granted the user will keep the right to execute or not, and will be asked to do so, and all this security stuff... but that is not my question.

• How can I peer into a Windows user's RDP session for support, where I initiate the support session?

  I've used both WebEx and GoToAssist, but neither of them have a story to tell for 'unattended' access of a user's desktop unless the user is using the machine's primary console. Unattended in the sense that they phone me and I then appear in their session, rather than they visit a website and enter their details and wait for me. This is a common use-case, since the users' machine is a virtual desktop, and the session broker is connecting the user via RDP. They never have a session with their desktop unless it's a remote desktop session. At the moment, if I use either of the said products to get an unattended support session going, all I can see is the login screen of the physical console, telling me that a remote session is in progress. Are there alternative tools which will make me happy?

• untrusted (self-sign) certificate on android browser

  Hi all, Apologies for the brevity of this question but due to an unfortunate series of events, I've managed to brick my PC so am posting from my phone... We've just set up Windows Small Business Server 2008 at work which has an external web portal accessible via HTTPS. We haven't yet bought?installed any certificates. The portal provides access to email, sharepoint, remote desktop, etc.... (I'm aware some of these are never going to work on the phone) From firefox / other desktop browsers, this displays an "untrusted cert' warning which I can choose to ignore. When browsing from my mobile I get a popup notification which says. "A secure connection could not be established" when I OK this (my only option) I see the standard android-generated "unable to load page - has it moved?" Page. Does anyone know of a way to either accept the certificate temporarily or allow untrusted certificates generally? I'm aware that the latter option is non-ideal in the mid to long term but at the moment, I need to access the portal and am willing to either toggle settings as/when required or forego using the mobile for banking, etc... to mitigate my risk. • Refreshing and alerting only when a keyword appears?

  I know of the addons which reload the page and inform about any change on the website like Check4Change and Reload Every for Firefox. However, I'd love to have something which not only looks for any change but for a particular keyword or a list of keywords. I mean: something that I can configure to look for, say, "Jesse James" and it reloads every n seconds but gives me an alert/sound only when this keyword appears on the site, ignoring any other content chagne. Is there anything like this for any browser?

  Hello there, after reading the announcements about Mac OS X "Lion" and Apples political decision, I've had enough. I'm a longtime Apple User since 1992, have always felt at home there, but am trying to switch to alternative Operating System since a year. I've also been working with Unix machines since 2001, so I'm looking in one of the free Unices or a Linux. Since I last looked at the desktop in 2002 choke much has changed, it seems. So I'm lost once more in the war between desktop environments and software. To be honest: I don't care what it's name is, I want to get my job done. Here's what I set me as landmark for an operating system/software to be considered: Has to be atleast four years old Has to supply security updates for current release for atleast a year Production quality stability for the whole desktop environment (!) No f****g commercial stuff that tends to supply me with privacy invading App Store or Cloud space So far I'm running a MacBook from 2007, 4 Gig memory, 250 Gig disk and I need: IMAPs for Mail since 1995 Webbrowser sic Shell Keeping current with Updates/Upgrades with no more than 5 Minutes spent in entering commands (makes it hard for OpenBSD ;-) ) A desktop filemanger would be nice, but is a bonus. What can you suggest as operating system? The one with the longest support cycles and best chance to survive the next 10 years will win a new user, even sending patches when needed :-) Greets

• Caching WCF javascript proxy on browser

  When you use WCF services from Javascript, you have to generate the Javascript proxies by hitting the Service.svc/js. If you have five WCF services, then it means five javascripts to download. As browsers download javascripts synchronously, one after another, it adds latency to page load and slows down page rendering performance. Moreover, the same WCF service proxy is downloaded from every page, because the generated javascript file is not cached on browser. Here is a solution that will ensure the generated Javascript proxies are cached on browser and when there is a hit on the service, it will respond with HTTP 304 if the Service.svc file has not changed. Here’s a Fiddler trace of a page that uses two WCF services. You can see there are two /js hits and they are sequential. Every visit to the same page, even with the same browser session results in making those two hits to /js. Second time when the same page is browsed: You can see everything else is cached, except the WCF javascript proxies. They are never cached because the WCF javascript proxy generator does not produce the necessary caching headers to cache the files on browser. Here’s an HttpModule for IIS and IIS Express which will intercept calls to WCF service proxy. It first checks if the service is changed since the cached version on the browser. If it has not changed then it will return HTTP 304 and not go through the service proxy generation process. Thus it saves some CPU on server. • How much to charge for being available for support?

  I am working in small development firm, our main products are ASP.NET and SQL server based. We are deploying a new version of our product and client wants 4-hour response time technical support. Some of this support time will fall outside regular business hours and our boss asked us how much should we charge for being available outside regular business hours? Is it 50% of our hourly fee, 20% ? Any suggestion is appreciated, he is pushing us to speak up and I don't have any idea. I don't want to underprice my free time. Thanks.

• How can I get cross-browser consistent behavior for TR heights within a table with a set height? [migrated]

  I have an arbitrary number of tables with an arbitrary number of rows in each, and all tables are the same height. My initial approach was to just set the overall height of the table and hope the rows were smart enough to distribute themselves appropriately. That's not the case. I have 4 different behaviors going on with 4 browsers, but I need them to all render at the very least in a similar way. Safari & Chrome (WebKit): All rows are equal height, creating scroll bars as needed and fitting within table height. Firefox: All rows are the height necessary to fit their content, with the remaining rows overflowing out of the table. Additionally, If the content of the rows does not take up all of the height, only the part of the table with content in it takes the background (though it seems, through use of Firebug, that the actual table [and TR] extend to the bottom of the proper table height). IE: All rows are the height necessary to fit their content, with the remaining rows overflowing out of the table. Obviously this only includes one version of each browser and additional variation would likely appear with more being tested. Ideally, a solution where the browser renders TRs with less content smaller than those with larger content, while still using scrolling within the variable height TRs when the overall height of the table is not enough would be optimum. I could potentially see a solution to achieve that with JS, but can it be done with CSS? Or, if not, can the behavior that WebKit displays be made to work across the browsers? Thanks!   I'm running some research on how people search the web for specific types of information. I'd like to be able to set them up with a laptop and browser and then record a history of what they search for and what sites they visit. A Firefox or Chrome plugin would be ideal, but a standalone program is fine too. It doesn't need to be free, just quick and reliable. It doesn't need to be a general PC monitoring program (though that would be OK too) - it's only Web usage I need to track. I've found a few on the Web but am not sure which ones to trust. Your recommendations would be much appreciated.
