  • Stream tar.gz file from FTP server

    Here is the situation: I have a tar.gz file on a FTP server which can contain an arbitrary number of files. Now what I'm trying to accomplish is have this file streamed and uploaded to HDFS through a Hadoop job. The fact that it's Hadoop is not important, in the end what I need to do is write some shell script that would take this file form ftp with wget and write the output to a stream. The reason why I really need to use streams is that there will be a large number of these files, and each file will be huge. It's fairly easy to do if I have a gzipped file and I'm doing something like this: wget -O - "ftp://${user}:${pass}@${host}/$file" | zcat But I'm not even sure if this is possible for a tar.gz file, especially since there are mutliple files in the archive. I'm a bit confused on what direction to take for this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I have a java application, which copies or moves a bunch of giga files from one ftp server to another. Currently it copies a file from the first fpt server to the local computer (where it runs) using ftp get and then copies it to the second ftp server using ftp put. I use net library from apache. Is it possible to copy it directly from one ftp server to another bypassing the local computer? One idea is to create a java telnet session and and send a couple of ftp commands. Will it work? Any other suggestions?

    The story behind: Old script written in ruby 1.8.6 that opens a connection to a ftp and download a configuration file. For a specific client with a windows ftp server the script just hangs. The log stops writing after it opens the connection to the ftp. It's an old script, it's in ruby and I'm not an expert on it. What I tried: So I tried this implementation of a timeout to check if an ftp connection hangs out with this code Timeout::timeout(5) { ftp = Net::FTP.new(host,pass,host) } The problem is that this isn't working. My guess is that the interpreter stops on opening the connection and the timeout doesn't kill the connection because the interpreter is stuck. Is it possible that that's the problem? Could you tell me if there is maybe an alternative solution or if I'm doing something wrong?

  • Passive ftp on Server 2008

    I have a new Windows 2008 server with IIS7. When I connect to the ftp in active mode, it works fine. In passive mode, it connects, but then times out trying to get the directory listing. I tried disabling both firewalls, but it didn't help. I've tried this with difference client machines and different ftp client software, with no change. Any ideas?

    I was wondering if there was a way to schedule automatic FTP site backup with any free or open-source software? Clients like FileZilla do not have an automatic backup (ftp download) option. Is there a way to schedule this with any program, by using the windows task scheduler? Or maybe we need to use a macro program like imacro in combination with FireFTP to do the job? Do you think using macro is a feasible and secure(reliable) solution?

    First an explanation about syncing folders instead of files. The folders in question has images that are not going to be edited and updated with the FTP server, but simply new images added to them. Is there a way to synchronize the presence of the images on both the client on server? The client server is a Windows machine, and while some may suggest using rsync and whatnot, the server is Linux-based but it's a shared webhost so no direct access other than FTP.

    I have a server that runs vsftpd to handle ftp connections. One of my users have a notebook with Total Commander and WinSCP installed. Both ftp clients fail right after the connection is established to the server and it tries to download the directory listing without any particular error message. The weird thing is: the notebook works perfectly ok with other ftp servers. My ftp server also works well with other clients. In fact, this user also has a pc running on the same LAN as the notebook and the pc works well with the ftp server. We use active ftp connection mode. Passive mode works well but is not an option at this point. I would post more technical details but I don't even know what this problem is related to. Anyway, below is the server side tcpdump for the failed connection attempt. There's no further communication between the client and the server after the last line of log.     I use FileZilla, and I thought when a session ended, it automatically closed the ftp connection, but that doesn't appear to have happened because now I'm getting a "530 Sorry, the maximum number of connections (10) for your host are already connected." error. Is there a way to find any open ftp connections and close them from my end? Or, do I have to contact the host?

    I was wondering if there is a free service that provides a repository for your backups. These are backups of my server, there are usually about 200mb. I want to FTP the last 2 or 3. I am looking for a service that maybe provide some gigs of space and with FTP access. Looking at email providers such as gmail and hotmail that give you a couple of gigs of free space, this should also be possible or am i horribly wrong.
