• setting upload/space limit for FTP client

  As part of my web hosting plan i've also got a few domain hosted for family and friends. I have my own FTP account with full access and I would like to give FTP to a web designer and a user. Is there a way for restricing uploads larger than a certian size, or setting a size limit on the folder that the FTP access has access to? I'd rather not let them upload files ridiciously big. We have a second Server 2008 (hereafter called SHARE) which is joined to that domain and has a disk shared as a network share (\\share\Office).   I'm planning on using vsftpd to act as a secure ftp server, but I am having difficulty controlling the linux users that will be used as ftp logins. The users are required to be "jailed" into a specific directory (and subdirectories) and have full read/write access. Requirements: - User account "admin_ftp" should be jailed to /var/www directory. - Other accounts will be added as needed, for each site... e.g: - User account "picturegallery_ftp" should be jailed to /var/www/picturegallery.com directory. I have tried the following, but to no avail: # Group to store all ftp accounts in. groupadd ftp_accounts # Group for single user, with the same name as the username. groupadd admin_ftp useradd -g admin_ftp -G ftp_accounts admin_ftp chgrp -R ftp_accounts /var/www chmod -R g+w /var/www When I log into FTP using account admin_ftp, I am given the error message: 500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/home/admin_ftp But didn't I specify the home directory? Extra internets for a guide how to do this specifically for vsftpd :)

• Using wget to recursively download whole FTP directories

  I want to copy all of the files and folders from one host to another. The files on the old host sit at /var/www/html and I only have FTP access to that server, and I can't TAR all the files. Regular connection to the old host through FTP brings me to the /home/admin folder. I tried running the following command form my new server: wget -r ftp://username:[email protected] But all I get is a made up index.html file. What the right syntax for using wget recursively over FTP?

• FTP passive mode with limited port range?

  I am running FileZilla FTP Server with passive mode enabled, and due to firewall constraints I have to limit the passive mode port range to only 6 ports. My question is how would FileZilla handle any situation where more than 6 concurrent FTP connections are active and want to passively upload a file. Would it queue the connections and prioritise them in a first in, first out manner? I'm not too familiar with FTP so any insight would be appreciated.

• FTP upload stalls at same point every time on FileZilla

  On two different FTP accounts, I am having problems uploading files. I can login and see the contents of the dir, and start an upload. Using Filezilla the transfer seems to always stall at either 0.9% or 1.2% (always those two numbers) and may simply hang, or keep restarting and then again stop at the same point. WindowsXP FTP is not great but I get similar types of problems there... it starts uploading and after a short while I get a timeout error. FTP used to work fine, and I don't know if it's these accounts in particular (both have the same service provider although purchased on opposite sides of the world) or if "FTP is broken on my PC"... can that even happen?!

  What do you use for backups to ftp server? I've tried the setup with Amanda and virtual tapes on the ftp server mounted with Curlftpfs and I'm not satisfied with it. I just don't feel confident about Amanda. Also I cannot use anything that uses rsync on the ftp mounted filesystem because it only creates the directories and doesn't create files as it cannot execute "mkstemp". I've been thinking about Bacula but I can't find any good HOWTO for it.

  Is there a setting in IIS 6 to turn an FTP site off after a specified number of failed login attempts? It has already been documented on this site that a Windows server sitting on a static IP address can record tens of thousands of failed login attempts a month. One server I maintain has had tens of thousands of attempts made against the FTP port. I have solid passwords in place, so I am not overly concerned. I rarely have to use the FTP, so for the most part I turn it on and off as I need it. Sometimes though I forget to turn it off when I am done, only to find the next day that my EventLog is full of audit failures. I would want to set a high number, in case I just messed up the password. Something like if 50 failed login attempts happen, just turn off the FTP site. Then if I need it later I can just start it again.

  Ok, I have a tar.gz file somewhere in a web server. The link looks like http://abcd.com/abcd.tar.gz .. And I have an FTP server running somewhere. Now, to upload the file to the FTP server, Typically I need to download it from the web server and then upload it again to the FTP server. But I'm wondering if there is anyway, I can directly transfer the file to the FTP server over the web. Not by downloading and uploading again. Any help?

• Mac OS X will only upload zero-byte files through FTP

  I'm using Mac OS X Lion and i've been having this problem with FTP (any FTP client, mind you. I tried Transmit, FileZilla, Cyberduck and the Terminal, all with the same result) I can browse files in my FTP Client, but when I upload files, the client hangs for a few seconds, then thinks it uploaded the files successfully, but it only creates a new file with one blank line in it. Sometimes, it manages to upload 4-5 lines. It then returns: 226 - Error during read from data connection 226 Transfer aborted But 2xx is a success message. It is not a server issue, since any Windows machine will upload just fine using the same network. Can anybody figure out what the problem is? It renders my mac useless for web development. The problem persists with SFTP and FTP with SSL/TLS. Later edit: Solved! Ok, turns out the problem goes away when I take out my router and connect directly through PPPoE. So the problem is with the router, I thought. But no, the problem is with the mac that connects through a router that connects through a PPPoE and tries to upload using FTP. Pretty specific, I know. The problem is with the MTU (maximum transmission unit). Apparently, mac os x breaks the file into chunks that are too large for the router to send, because the router's MTU was set lower than Mac OS X's. My router's was 1492, which is ok, but my Mac's MTU was 1500, which is unacceptable. I don't even understand why it works directly with PPPoE. Anyway, if you encounter the same problem, this is how you diagnose and fix it: In terminal, run: ifconfig | grep mtu to see what the MTU is for en0 (or en1, mine was en0) If it's 1500, run sudo ifconfig en0 mtu 1300 This should solve it. If so, it may only be until the next restart. You can also change the MTU in System Preferences \ Network \ Ethernet - Advanced \ Hardware

And that all works, I can now FTP with the user I created directly to that location. However I whenever I ftp, I have no permissions to change anything. How can I change that? Thanks!!

• Problems with Net::FTP slowing down

  I'm running into an issue with using Net::FTP (latest version 2.77) to transfer files to a remote host where a process is waiting to take the file and feed into some other system. The remote process does this every 5 minutes but ignores files that were modified in the last 0.2 seconds (that's right, 1/5th of a second). The problem is that for some reason the transfer seems to halt or slow down a bit and no data is transferred for several seconds and during this time the process picks up the incomplete file and removes it. The weird thing is that manually using the ftp binary the file seems to transfer fine. I've tried messing with all of the Net::FTP switches (Active/Passive, different Blocksizes) and nothing seems to help. What's also weird is that the file seems to transfer fairly quickly at first and on occasion a bit into the transfer. Like 300-500k will go up immediately, but then it slows down to where the file size is only increasing by 2,896 bytes every several seconds. It doesn't seem to happen when I try sending the file to a different remote host, but since a regular manual ftp transfer works with this host I don't know what to think. Some combination of Net::FTP and possibly a slow or wonky connection?

  I try to transfer a file from SSIS package to a FTP server provided by my client. When I try connecting and transfer using a FTP tool (WinSCP) manually it works fine and file was transferred. But when i use the ftp command in command prompt and try to transfer using "send" command i get an error "553 could not create file". This also happens from SSIS package.   I am looking for an FTP client that will allow me to do the following Include a GUI for setting up a number of FTP connections Support FTPS Run unattended on Windows Server 2008 Retry failed transactions Support email Support custom scripts I need to pull files from a few different servers and there are certain calculations that need to be done depending on which server the files come from. I've looked at SmartFTP and it looks like pretty much what I need except I can't get it to run as a Windows Scheduled Task (I currently have some support threads open in their forum). I've also looked at a few other FTP clients (Filezilla, RoboFTP, and AutoFTP (you can find the Windows 7 BSOD in this one!)) that haven't had the capabilities I'm looking for. Right now, I'm looking at WS_FTP and its scripting capabilities. It appears I can create a script to run as a scheduled task, but I can't add the script to a file transfer task. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can do post-transfer processing on the files or better yet how to integrate scripting into the file transfer task? I'm also open to other suggestions for FTP clients as well if you have them! If I can't find a suitable FTP client, custom scripting will just have to do the trick.

  I am trying to determine the reason for some FTP servers requiring a blank line in the script as follows: open server.com username ftp_commands bye Refer to blank line required after username credentials. I suspect this may be limited to FTP scripts executed from Windows machines, but have been told that this happens often and with many different servers. My specific interest is to understand what may cause this as I have a real world example of a production system suddenly requiring this as a workaround fix, after running for many years without issue. The server belongs to a third party who claims no change on their end. Server details unknown and cannot be determined. Any help or encouragement from someone who has come across the same, would be appreciated. ps.   Since a few days ago I am unable to connect to any FTP site neither through Windows's FTP client nor through other software like WinSCP. But I can login through command line FTP client. I am using Windows 7. ESET firewall is disabled and did not find any blocking rule in windows firewall. A symptom is when enter ftp://my-server.com in windows explorer address bar it says "windows cannot access the folder" and there is no further info in Details section. Please help!
