  I traded in my Surface 2 (the trade-in program is now over) and bought a Surface Pro 3 with an i7 processor and 8 GB of ram. I greatly prefer the 3 by 2 aspect ratio of the Surface 3. • Confusion installing mongodb manually because of sitting behing a proxy

  I am forced to install mongodb manually on an Ubuntu server because the machine sits behind a proxy and there is no way to temporary open port 11371 for key exchange to happen. I am following this official mongoDB tutorial. So I downloaded the tgz and extracted it in /usr/local/bin/mongodb. Where I got confused is when assigning the ownership of the /data/db to the user mongo. So who creates the user mongo? How to get control-scripts working?

• Can I (reasonably) refuse to sign an NDA for pro bono work? [closed]

  A friend of mine (let's call him Joe) is working on a promising project, and has asked me for help. As a matter of friendship I agreed (orally) not to discuss the details, but now he has a potential investor who wants me to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Since thus far all my work has been pro bono I told Joe I am not comfortable putting myself under documented legal obligation without some kind of compensation for the risk. (It needn't be strictly financial. I would accept a small ownership stake or possibly even just guaranteed credits in the code and documentation.) Is my request reasonable, or am I just introducing unnecessary complexity?

• Domain held at one registry, need to redirect to subdomain on my own hosting provider

  Hi, There are lots of questions around this general area, but I haven't seen one that exactly mirrors what I'd like to know. It's per the title really. My understanding (and what I'm told by my host) is the easiest thing is just to get the transfer key and bring the DNS across to my own hosting provider. Also I'm told by my host this doesn't affect the client's ownership of the domain itself. Basically, I have a subdomain setup with the site (this has the same IP address as the top level domain). So presumably just giving the other registrar that IP address will only refer it only to the TLD rather than the subdomain. What's the easiest way to achieve this? It's an asp.net site, I don't have a hosted directory on the client's account where I can code a redirect. Thanks all Mark

• Can software company claim the intellectual property rights on my paintings?

  This is somewhat related to this question. I'm about to sign a contract with a company that this sort of "all your base are belong to us" clause in it: it says that all programs, designs, sketches, drawings I create in relation to my job belong to the company. More or less usual stuff (unfortunately). What worries me, however, is this "drawings, sketches" thing, because I'm a hobby-artist and I paint and draw at my spare time. Can the company somehow claim ownership of intellectual rights on this work? Should I ask them to explicitly state that this clause does not extend to work of art or is this "in relation to the job" part is good enough?

  I understand the concepts of deadlock well enough, but when I'm given a problem like the one below I'm not sure how to go about solving it. I can draw a resource allocation graph, but I'm not sure how to solve it from there. Is there a better more formal way of solving this? Consider a system with five processes, P1 through P5, and five resources, R1 through R5. Resource ownership is as follows. • P1 holds R1 and wants R3 • P2 holds R2 and wants R1 • P3 holds R3 and wants R5 • P4 holds R5 and wants R2 • P5 holds R4 and wants R2 Is this system deadlocked? • Transfer domain from godaddy to another registrar and (somewhat) maintain privacy?

  Does anyone know if its possible in any ways to do this? Transfer a private domain (via domainsbyproxy) registered at godaddy to another registrar. While I know moving a domain from godaddy requires the privacy to be disabled, what we were thinking of doing is the following: a) Update the whois info inside domains by proxy to a 3rd party. Most likely a law firm who would in essnece become our 'custodian'. b) Wait 60 days (?) c) Disable domain privacy. Now the law firms details would become public. d) Conduct the domain transfer. e) Take ownership of the domain at the new registrar. Does something like this sound possible? Does anyone know any other way to handle this? Thanks.

  I am wanting a local phone number that I like. I have found one that I like. When I call the number that I want it says "this number has not been allocated" I have looked up and found the company that owns that number. How do I go about acquiring that number from the company. I spoke with someone who sells major phone packages and he said that if I signed up with them he could get the number for me. He said that there is a change of ownership form that the send to get the number. So I know it can be done. I am hoping that someone with industry specific knowledge in this area can guide me in getting this number.

  We are a group of people who are about to start a software cooperative, which means all of us (and other future workers) will be the owners of the 'company' rather than having bosses and employees. We do this from ideological reasons but also because we believe this allows many advantages - power of democracy (see SE..) , motivation, creativity, good work relations and atmosphere and more. We do face some questions about how exactly ownership of our products should be split, should we give different percentage for different people which put in a different amount of work hours or brings expert knowledge. We want people to feel they get what they deserve, not more, not less, and we're not sure just splitting it even will give this feeling. • Samba user does not have folder read permission

  I have set up a special user for read only samba shares. I set him up in Samba and as a system user. I shared a couple of folders but that user cannot access them. I know samba is working because I also shared them with the main user of the system which is an admin account and it works fine. How can I allow this user to have read permissions on all the directories I want to share without changing anything for any other users of the system? For example, I don't want to give him ownership of any of the files/directories. Just ongoing recursive read access. ongoing recursive is important. If someone adds a file or directory, I still want him to automatically be able to read it.

  As I understand it, a unique_ptr signifies exclusive ownership. A singly linked list seems to fit this, with each node owning the next, like (pseduocode alert) class node{ public: unique_ptr<node> next; int value; }; but I don't understand how to perform operations like traversing the list, where I'm used to doing here=here->next; How do you implement data structures using unique_ptr's? Are they the right tool for the job?

• Does it matter that the TTL is higher than I've been told?

  Ok, so the title isn't very descriptive, I know. Basically, I'm trying to configure Outlook.com to use my custom domain! I've followed the steps and made the account etc. and now I have the DNS settings to configure from Windows Live. I added the MX Entries and everything last night but Windows Live is still saying I need to prove my ownership of the domain. The only thing I can think of that I had to use a differrent TTL to the one provided because my web hoster will only allow a minimum of four hours, whereas Windows Live told me to configure the TTL as one hour. Would that stop anything? By the way, my web hoster is JustHost (Shared Hosting)

• Change from static HTML file to meta tag for Google Webmaster verification

  I started verifying the server by putting a couple of static HTMLs in place. Then I noticed that Google wants you to keep these files in place. I didn't want to keep the static HTMLs in, so I want to switch to an alternative verification mechanism, and include the meta tags on the home page. Unfortunately, once your site is verified, you never seem to be able to change to an alternative way of verification. I tried removing the HTML pages. No luck whatsoever. Google still considers the site to be 'verified'. Does anybody know how to undo this? All I want to do is switch to the meta tag based method of site ownership verification.

  I use the (excellant) unison to sync two file servers and I've just realised i've synced a number of files without using the switch in unison that maintains the file user ownership. these files now have a user of root (coz i have to run unison as root) Can I chown to a specified user BUT only change the files that now have the owner root and do so recursively in the directory in question? Sure i can but not sure of the arguments to "find files with owner 0 and change them to owner xxxx". THX for any help...

You have to know that: both servers have the same Microsoft patches/fixes, same hardware, same everything. both servers use the same memory storage (a RAID-6 through fiber channel). this software has a main module who launch the peripheral modules. if a peripheral module crashes, the main module restarts it. When I switch the application in one of the two servers (let's say the B server) two of the peripheral modules of the main applications just started to crash apparently without reason about 2 seconds after the start of the peripheral module. What could I do to analyze/inspect/resolve this weird situation?

I have a great idea that has been rolling around in my head for a while, and if it takes off I'd obviously like to have my name on it/make some money on it. Is a hackathon a good place to present a project I'm serious about? How will the ownership work? I think I could get the project functional over the weekend of the event, but I'd definitely want to develop it further after. • Microsoft Silverlight cannot be used in browsers running in 64 bit mode.

  Hi, I have taken ownership of an application which is a .net win forms application which hosts a System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser. When the application launches it makes a http request to load a xap file. I immediately see "install silverlight" icon and on clicking get: "Microsoft Silverlight cannot be used in browsers running in 64 bit mode". The app was written initially on a 32 bit machine although I have a 64 bit machine. Any ideas what I need to tweak to get this running? JD

• SVN - Permission Denied

  I have set up a Linux Server and installed Apache and SVN and dav_svn on it. Now, when I try to upload to https://x.x.x.x:x/svn/repo with Tortoise SVN I get Can't open file '/server/svn/repo/db/txn-current-lock': Permission denied I have Set up my SSL correctly (I can checkout, no problems, even remotely due to Port Forwarding). I'm guessing this has to do with the Linux Ownership of the Repository folders, How must I set this/ what are the commands? I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 Server + Apache2.
