    72 ppi is nothing. And we have been stuck with this for 20 years. Why do we need to resort to stupid tech like anti-aliasing instead of resolving the core of the issue, more pixels per inch!!! It is really surprising considering all the progress cpu's, video cards, etc. have made.

  • How to find a user's (or mine) access rights on Windows Server 2008?

    I was given access to a Windows Server 2008 box and I need to check what all permissions I have on that box (if possible in the entire domain). I don't have access to domain controller and I don't want to write LDAP queries but just some GUI option or some command line stuff. Is there anyway? In any case, it crashed my firefox 3.5.4. (or to be more precise, made it unusable) ... I don't know about other browsers. Since it's been a while since something that stupid did something like that, I'm wondering ... what weakness is that thing using (Javascript ?), and how to protect oneself from it ?

  • Restoring the Fonts folder by using a restore point

    I am an idiot. Who would have thought that installing 2 gigs of fonts would be detrimental to the boot up time for the most common design programs such as adobe illustrator. I would like to restore the font folder because I am no longer able to just delete the fonts. It takes too long. So when I right-click the fonts folder and select "Restore Previous Versions" I am able to find a restore point, but the "Restore" button is greyed out. this leads me to think that I cannot change the settings of files in the windows directory. Oh and there are 34,000 fonts I need gone. Thanks

  • Windows 7 Favorite folder doesn't work

    So recently I did a very stupid thing and accidentally deleted my APPDATA (LOL yes), and now the favorite folder doesn't work anymore. The favorite folder I am refering to is the one in windows explorer (not the horrid IE) in windows 7, which appears on the left of windows explorer windows. The %USERPROFILE%/Favorite folder still works correctly, but the favorite folder in the shell doesn't point there, instead it points to a nonexistant and broken location, how do i fix this problem?

  • Getting data from closed files with concatenate formula

    Each day a program is creating an excel file for me with some data for the current day. Like what is the price for products, how many people are available today and things like that. Based on all this I need to make some forecasts and workplace allocations for workers. The problem is, that I need to drag all this information manually all the time. So to make it automatic I placed the formula in cells like: ='c:\ABC\[ABC 29-01-14.xlsx]sheet'!a1 Everything works fine, but next day I have to change file name for "ABC 30-01-14" for each cell, what is the same as entering the data manually. So I used "concatenate" formula to change date according to today's date automatically. I used "indirect" formula to turn it in to a real formula, not text string, and realized that it is working only for open files, not closed. Is there any way to do this for closed files without VBA, because I don't know it, or with VBA but explained for an idiot.

  • Virtual Machine for software renting service

    I am currently trying to figure out which solution would be best for software renting service (with proper licensing and stuff). I know its kinda stupid and so on, but I just have to develop it. Long story short - user can connect to a virtual machine (with windows guest os) using vnc and use some specific software for some specific time (eg., 1 hour). I have already considered VirtualBox, Xen and some other, but maybe somebody has a better idea. Thanks.

  • where to get an IBM jre for 64-bit Windows?

    I know this is stupid: I couldn't find anything from IBM website about where to download an IBM jre (specifically, IBM jre1.6.0 J9 2.4 SR6) for a 64-bit Windows OS. Google takes me to a link which looks similar, but that jre would only work on an IBM product, I assume their own server/workstation or something like that. So I've been stuck by this for quite some time... I couldn't believe there is no such a "previous version repository" or something similar on IBM website :( Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

  • Controlling access to my API using SSH public key (not SSL)

    I have the challenge of implementing an API to be consumed by relatively non-technical clients -- pasting some sample code into their WordPress or homegrown PHP site is probably as much as we can ask. Asking them to install SSL on their servers ain't happening. So I am seeking a simple yet secure way to authenticate API clients. OAuth is the obvious solution, but I don't think it passes the "simple" test. Adding a client id and hashed secret as a parameter to the requests is closer -- it's not hard to do md5($secret . $client_id) or whatever the php would be. It seems to me that if client requests could use the same approach as SSH public keys (client gives us a key from their server(s) there should be some existing magic to make all of the subsequent transactions transparently work just as regular HTTP API requests. I am still working this out (obviously :-), so if I am being an idiot, it would be nice to know why. Thanks!

  • httpd.conf ruined - can't access my vps anymore

    Okay, so this may be incredible stupid But I was configuring my httpd.conf file yesterday. After a server restart, I can no longer access it. Port 80 is working fine, and it displays my webpages, however when I access the site via ssh, it just says the connection was refused. I cannot access webmin which is port 10000 or access it via ftp :/ Do I need to recreate the whole site or is there a way to get into it? I think I messed up the virtual hosts :)

  • A script so that you don't forget your usb drive on a public computer

    So I have a problem because I'm an idiot. I seem to always leave my usb drives in public computers at school and the like. I unmount them and log off leaving them still in the pc, and of course I then lose my information and my drive which can be costly. Is there a small script somewhere that I can install to my drive that prompts me to take out my usb stick when I log off of a computer? Since this is mostly for use with public computers I can't put anything on my drive that will later need some sort of admin permissions. I guess if all else fails I'll probably put my drive on a lanyard and keep it around my wrist. lol. Does anyone else have this problem?

  • Dual boot, win7 & ubuntu. Gparted, resize not move. Performance?

    I installed dual boot on a computer that already had win7 installed. The question here is about gparted ability to move partitions. I made place for ubuntu in the computers "Data" partition, by resizing it. But I canceled the "move" action. Was that incredibly stupid, or is this care? Maybe performance is affected. Can this effect the hd's lifespan? The computer is UL30A.

  • I'm scared for my technical phone interview for an internship!

    [EDIT 2.0 ]Hello everyone. This is my second phone interview for a development internship. My very first one was okay, but I didn't get my dream internship. Now, I'm facing fears about this upcoming interview. My fears include the following: I'm 19 years old. The thought of 2 lead developers interviewing me makes me think that I'll know so little of what they'd want me to know. Like they will expect so much. I'm a junior having these panic attacks that I did not get in the other internship. I have a little voice saying "You didn't get the other one. What makes you think you'll get this one?". I'm scared that I'll freeze up, forget everything I know, and stutter like an idiot. I'm still traumatized by the last one, because I really really wanted that internship, and I even studied very hard for it. When I was in the interview, I was so nervous I couldn't think clearly. As a result, I didn't do as well as I know I could have. The minute I hung up, I even thought of a better solution to the interview question! Any tips for a soon-to-be intern (hopefully!)? Thank you! P.S. I'm preparing by using this guide for phone interviews.

  • Since a few days, Dropbox stopped syncing

    Theres a new problem with nautilus-dropbox and is the worst for a service like Dropbox: stopped syncing and their tech support don't believe their users. The problem is: start dropbox it downloads index creates folders start to download files stop downloading files or the speed is like 0.3k/seg even deleting everything doesn't work, even syncing a single folder with a few files, not even configuring a different limit speed or let all your bandwith, nothing works for me and i have found many users with the same problem. it's strange, i have two computers with ubuntu 14.04 and one with windows 7, and in one of the linux machines it works fine, but not in the other one. Both of them are x64. The answers from the tech support starts with "delete everything and reinstall" to "you may be blocking port 443", yeah, sure (and if i do that half of internet dissapears, idiot), but nothing works. Someone has some idea? i cant find any log file (at least a text log file like in /var/log) to understand what is dropbox doing and what is not working.   • Addicted to the MIX Buzz

    Well it's the Friday before MIX10, and I'm officially of no use to anybody. I'll be driving up to 'Vegas Sunday ... hopefully rolling in mid-late afternoon, checking in at my $31.50/night (including WiFi) Motel, and getting registered then hanging out around registration to see who is there. First organized thing to do is 9PM, so I'm open to suggestions Sunday evening... maybe we can get a gang together for dinner ?? Monday is the Keynote ... I'm addicted to the buzz in the ballroom the first day, hope to be close to the front, trying to live blog. Then straight to Ballroom A and stake out the spot I'll be in for all 3 days, and you all know why :) I've tagged 40 sessions that I 'want' to see, and there's only 12 slots... damn... if I could, I'd try the Multiplicity thing, but I'm afraid I'd get the idiot first try -- or maybe got that one already :) ... but at least I tagged them to make it easy to find after the videos are up. Stuff going on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night. I'm staying over for an event on Thursday, and driving back on Friday. I'm not sure how much blogging I'll be doing, but I'll try to hit some 'Cream high spots. I'm sure everyone #NotAtMIX is going to be tuned into the sessions online. I'll be wearing TShirts with WynApse.com and SilverlightCream.com printed on the back... so if you see some old curmudgeon with such a shirt, IT'S ME!   • Error with APE Server Installation

    I was trying to install APE-Server from the .deb file at the ape-server homepage (www.ape-project.org) and I ran into an error so wanted to try removing the installation and reinstalling. I did a sudo apt-get remove ape-server which ran successfully but left ape-server folders in my /etc/ and /etc/init.d locations. Me being an idiot new comer to linux decided that manually delete those folders. Now when I reinstall the ape-server those folders don't get recreated and therefore I cannot send the /etc/init.d/ape-server [option] command because the folder is not found. When I try to sudo apt-get purge (or remove) ape-server I get the following sudo apt-get purge ape-server Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: ape-server* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 92 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed.   • Interpreting Others' Source Code

    Note: I am aware of this question. This question is a bit more specific and in-depth, however, focusing on reading the actual code rather than debugging it or asking the author. As a student in an introductory-level computer science class, my friends occasionally ask me to help them with their assignments. Programming is something I'm very proud of, so I'm always happy to oblige. However, I usually have difficulty interpreting their source code. Sometimes this is due to a strange or inconsistent style, sometimes it's due to strange design requirements specified in the assignment, and sometimes it's just due to my stupidity. In any case, I end up looking like an idiot staring at the screen for several minutes saying "Uh..." I usually check for the common errors first - missing semicolons or parentheses, using commas instead of extractor operators, etc. The trouble comes when that fails. I often can't step through with a debugger because it's a syntax error, and I often can't ask the author because he/she him/herself doesn't understand the design decisions. How do you typically read the source code of others? Do you read through the code from top-down, or do you follow each function as it's called? How do you know when to say "It's time to refactor?"

  • Dedicated Servers: Is one better then two for LAMP pseudo HA setup? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I know there are zillions of commentary about hosting out there, but I haven't read much about this. Our current well known host is having too many problems, the hardware we are on it subpar, and I'm ready to leave. A day of downtime can cost as much as our monthly hosting bill. A month of bad performance is just killing us right now, user and google wise. I'm wondering about running two dedicated boxes for LAMP, one running as the primary Nginx/Apache (proxy pass), and the other as the MySQL box. Running a single box scares the bejesus out of me because who knows how long it will take anyone to fix a raid card or whatever. The idea is to set this up using some sort of failover system using pacemaker and heartbeat. If one server goes down the other can take over for the other running both web and db. There are some good articles over at Linode about this. I have a few DBs that are 1GB+ and would like to load them into memory. Because of this, I'm shying away from a Linode HA setup because for the price I could do it with two dedicated like I described. Am I mad or an idiot? What are people out there doing for pseodu high availability good performance setups under $400/month? I'm a webmaster; I do a lot of things none of it that well :)

  • I'm doing 90% maintenance and 10% development, is this normal?

    I have just recently started my career as a web developer for a medium sized company. As soon as I started I got the task of expanding an existing application (badly coded, developed by multiple programmers over the years, handles the same tasks in different ways, zero structure) So after I had successfully extended this application with the requested functionality, they gave me the task to fully maintain the application. This was of course not a problem, or so I thought. But then I got to hear I wasn't allowed to improve the existing code and to only focus on bug fixes when a bug gets reported. From then on I have had 3 more projects just like the above, that I now also have to maintain. And I got 4 projects where I was allowed to create the application from scratch, and I have to maintain those as well. At this moment I'm slightly beginning to get crazy from the daily mails of users (read managers) for each application I have to maintain. They expect me to handle these mails directly while also working on 2 other new projects (and there are already 5 more projects lined up after those). The sad thing is I have yet to receive a bug report on anything that I have coded myself, for that I have only received the occasional lets do things 180 degrees different change requests. Anyway, is this normal? In my opinion I'm doing the work equivalent of a whole team of developers. Was I an idiot when I initially expected things to be different? I guess this post has turned into a big rant, but please tell me that this is not the same for every developer. P.S. My salary is almost equal if not lower then that of a cashier at a supermarket.

  • Why do I need a framework?

    First of all I know my question may sounds idiot but I am no "beginner". In fact I work as game developer for several years now and I know some things about code :) But as this is no related to game development I am a bit lost. I am writing a big script (something about GIS) in Python, using a lot of data stored in a database. I made a first version of my script, and now, I'd like to re-design the whole thing. I read some advice about using a framework (like Django) for database queries. But as my script only "SELECT" informations I was wondering about the real benefits to use a framework. It seems that it adds a lot of complexity and useless embedded features (useless for my specific script) for the benefits that it will bring. Am I wrong? EDIT: few spec of this "script". Its purpose is to get GIS data on an enormous database (if you ever worked with openstreetmap you know what I mean ~= 200Go) and to manipulate this data in order to produce nice map images. Queries are not numerous (select streets, select avenues, select waterways, select forests... and so on for a specific area) but query results may be more than 10.000 rows. I'd like to sell this script as a service, so yes it's meant to stay.

  • Documents stored on separate internal drive, Ubuntu doesn't notice on startup

    My machine has Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running side-by-side on a single hard drive with GRUB bootloader, each with 500 GB storage. I keep my personal documents on a separate 1TB hard drive so they remain isolated from any changes I make to the OS drive, but when Ubuntu starts it does not seem to notice my documents drive. While I've installed and worked with Ubuntu 12.04 Server x32 before, using it as a desktop OS is new to me. I use my documents drive for all of my personal data, including wallpapers and music, so it is imperative that Ubuntu recognize it on startup. Concerning the two specific examples: Ubuntu loads with the default blue-colored desktop instead of my desired picture of the spectacular Carina galaxy. When I right-click the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background", it wakes up from its amnesia and loads the proper background. As for my music, Rhythmbox defaults to an empty library upon reboot, forcing me to reload the settings manually each time. This gets quite tedious because I certainly can't work to my full potential without my music. The second thing I would like to address is making Ubuntu point the documents directories in ~ to their appropriate counterparts on the 1TB documents drive. I realize that this question is not new, but when I create the symbolical links, they established themselves inside the directories and did not convert the directories themselves into symbolical links. I also prefer not to move the files themselves from their current location on the 1TB drive. I believe this would also help the Rhythmbox library problem as well considering it's a default directory for the music player.   • ubuntu 12.04 will not play DVDs

    First off, I'm not just a newbie, I'm clueless! So your answers will need to be in complete idiot language (let's say I'm computer saavy, and I can follow directions,but I've never programmed anything and assume I don't understand any abbreviations. So why am I running linux? b/c windows was driving me nuts!! and my friend convinced me. day-to-day operations, we're doing fine, but when it comes to problems, I've got no clue what I'm doing!) So here's what's going on, my machine is an HP pavilion dv6, my optical drive is a standard cd/dvdrw, when i load an audio cd of any type (burned, official, etc,..) I have no problems, when I pop in a dvd - i get nothing. the dvd icon comes up in my launch tray, when I open VLC player I can find the dvd in the folder... but it won't play. I can watch movies I've downloaded with no problem, I can also watch movies off an external hard drive. The only thing I've tried is removing vlc and reinstalling, and I tried installing a different player (gnome maybe? I don't remember). none of that worked. Again, i can follow directions, but you need to be very specific and don't assume I know anything going in. (I mean, I know basic stuff, but nothing too technical.) PLEASE HELP!!! MY KIDS ARE DRIVING ME CRAZY!!! Thanks!!
