  • How can I remotely tell what brand/model internal SCSI card is installed in a machine?

    I am doing some consulting work for a previous employer upgrading and migrating old servers to new hardware. There is an existing file server (HP ProLiant DL380) that has an tape backup drive connected; it is using a SCSI interface and I'm pretty sure it's using an internal SCSI card. They are upgrading to a new server hardware (HP ProLiant DL160 G6). The old server is 2U, the new one 1U and we would want to move the tape drive to the new server, too. I'm trying to figure out if the SCSI card in the old server would be able to be installed in the new one or if we'll need to source a new card; mostly I don't know for sure the height of the card and if it's low-profile enough that it would fit in the new server. There is not much of a technical resource onsite and the old server is in-use anyway so I would like to avoid making a trip in myself or trying to have someone onsite pop open the case and tell me what card is there. It's running Windows Server 2003 - is there a way to tell from say Device Manager what make and model the SCSI card might be? Or any other system diagnostic program or something that would give me hardware info like that? Thanks for any info!

  • Can I tell if crashplan has backed up a particular file in a particular state?

    I would like to be able to tell, programmatically, if CrashPlan has backed-up a particular file, including the current updates to that file. I.e., that the current contents of a file are backed up. It's relatively easy to tell when CrashPlan last backed up a file: its file name appears in /usr/local/crashplan/log/backup_files.log.0, and with some accuracy, I could compare the backup time with the last modification time to the file, but that method appears to be somewhat dubious. A couple of methods I could think of, but I don't know how: Compare the current file to CrashPlan's metadata about that file. This needs knowledge about the format of CrashPlan's "cache" files as well as the hashing system used. This might be achievable through the CLI, but the CLI is just a portal into the GUI, and I need something that's scriptable. Restore the file to a temporary directory, and compare it. Unfortunately, there is no CLI to do restores; the GUI is the only way. I'll describe what I'm trying to achieve. It would be nice to know how to do the above, even if there are alternative methods for the following: I'm using CrashPlan for continuous backups to my PostgreSQL database, using WAL archives. In the current configuration, the archive command copies the files to an archive directory, which is backed up by CrashPlan. Every so often I manually confirm (or just trust) a group of WALs are backed up, and remove them from the archive directory, and occasionally do a restore through the GUI to ensure I can retrieve current and "deleted" WALs. The xlog directory is backed-up, too, so I have a good chance of doing a near-full restore even if a particular xlog hasn't been archived by PostgreSQL yet. I'd like to be able to automate this process, which necessitates either confirming the backup status and recency, or automating a restore for comparison purposes. (As a bonus, if the method is trustworthy, I could turn the "archive_command" from "copy to archive directory" into "confirm CrashPlan has backed up the current version", and do away with the archive directory completely). (And, yes, I'm doing regular pg_dumpall's, in addition to the above.)

  • Do email providers have to tell me which (inter)national agencies/institutes are requesting legal access to my account data?

    I know this question is not technical, but i did not find the "stackoverflow for legal issues" and I guess all you super users out there might know the answer. Here is my (potential) problem: I have a free email account at a (inter)national email provider. I used the words "wikileaks" and "twitter" lately in my email. Some over-ambitious national security organization legally requests access to all accounts that behaved similarly. Q1: Can I request the who-, when-, and why-information related to this legal request from my provider? Does he have to tell me which (inter)national organizations (legally) requested my account data? Q2: Does the situation change if I live in Germany (and have a German provider)? I guess here are some German users. And I know that such a legal policy exists for our national credit rating agency. I can request who got access to my data, they have to tell me. Please answer only if you know a good answer, I don't want to start a long discussion on this none-technical question.     I installed ZendStudio 5.5.1 on Ubuntu 12.04 and it runs well , no problem. Today, I download Ubuntu 12.10 and intalled it on my / but keep the /home partition. And now, I can't run the ZendStudio any more, it gives me this error: strings: '/lib/libc.so.6': No such file ./ZDE: 1714: exec: /home/william/Zend/ZendStudio-5.5.1/jre/bin/java: not found But the java file exist! What's wrong? Thanks!

How can I tell if a particular pair of parens will be treated as a grouping construct or a one-element list? For example, I'm pretty sure this is a scalar and not a one-element list: (1 + 1) But what about more complex expressions? Is there an easy way to tell?

My problem is that I can't figure out a way to tell if the activity is still alive when you go back to it, so I end up re-querying my JSON from the server and redrawing the list every time the user goes back to the activity.     I know that so far (until MSSQL 2005 at least), system databases are master, model, msdb and tempdb. Thing is, as far as I can tell, this is not guaranteed to be preserved in the future. And neither the sys.databases view nor the sys.sysdatabases view tell me if a database is considered as a system database. Is there someplace where this information (whether a database is considered a system database or not) can be obtained?

    My question is about quite popular YouTube downloaders like youtube-dl (a command line program) or VideoDownloadHelper (a Firefox-browser extension). Comparing two cases: Watching a video on YouTube Download the video using a downloader (to be specific let's assume youtube-dl) Is it possible to tell – for instance by inspecting the network traffic – that the video was downloaded and not "only watched" on YouTube? Maybe one could compare network traffic using programmes like Wireshark? I cannot do that myself, but maybe this will help somebody to answer the question.

    I recently found a program called KeyScrambler which appears to be a keyboard driver filter that intercepts keystrokes and jumbles them up for you so keyloggers aren't able to get your keystrokes while visiting your online banking sites. I was wondering if there is a way to tell if KeyScrambler is always first in line for the keyboard driver filters or if another driver filter could be installed and intercept the keystrokes before it gets to KeyScrambler.

  • How do I tell mdadm to start using a missing disk in my RAID5 array again?

    I have a 3-disk RAID array running in my Ubuntu server. This has been running flawlessly for over a year but I was recently forced to strip, move and rebuild the machine. When I had it all back together and ran up Ubuntu, I had some problems with disks not being detected. A couple of reboots later and I'd solved that issue. The problem now is that the 3-disk array is showing up as degraded every time I boot up. For some reason it seems that Ubuntu has made a new array and added the missing disk to it. I've tried stopping the new 1-disk array and adding the missing disk, but I'm struggling. On startup I get this: root@uberserver:~# cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10] md_d1 : inactive sdf1[2](S) 1953511936 blocks md0 : active raid5 sdg1[2] sdc1[3] sdb1[1] sdh1[0] 2930279808 blocks level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/4] [UUUU] I have two RAID arrays and the one that normally pops up as md1 isn't appearing. I read somewhere that calling mdadm --assemble --scan would re-assemble the missing array so I've tried first stopping the existing array that ubuntu started: root@uberserver:~# mdadm --stop /dev/md_d1 mdadm: stopped /dev/md_d1 ...and then tried to tell ubuntu to pick the disks up again: root@uberserver:~# mdadm --assemble --scan mdadm: /dev/md/1 has been started with 2 drives (out of 3). So that's started md1 again but it's not picking up the disk from md_d1: root@uberserver:~# cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10] md1 : active raid5 sde1[1] sdf1[2] 3907023872 blocks level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [3/2] [_UU] md_d1 : inactive sdd1[0](S) 1953511936 blocks md0 : active raid5 sdg1[2] sdc1[3] sdb1[1] sdh1[0] 2930279808 blocks level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/4] [UUUU] What's going wrong here? Why is Ubuntu trying to pick up sdd into a different array? How do I get that missing disk back home again? [Edit] - After adding the md1 to mdadm.conf it now tries to mount the array on startup but it's still missing the disk. If I tell it to try and assemble automatically I get the impression it know it needs sdd but can't use it: root@uberserver:~# mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md1: File exists mdadm: /dev/md/1 already active, cannot restart it! mdadm: /dev/md/1 needed for /dev/sdd1... What am I missing?

    I've associated .xul with Notepad++ so if I double-click on a .xul file, it will open in Notepad++. But Notepad++ doesn't know that XUL is just a particular type of XML, so I then have to manually click on "Language XML" to get XML syntax highlighting. Is there a way that I can tell it: "every time you open a file with the extension .xul, automatically switch to the XML language"?

    Hi all. Problem: I have CaretListener and DocumentListener listening on a JTextPane. I need an algorithm that is able to tell which line is the caret at in a JTextPane, here's an illustrative example: Result: 3rd line Result: 2nd line Result: 4th line and if the algorithm can tell which line the caret is in the JTextPane, it should be fairly easy to substring whatever that is in between the parentheses as the picture (caret is at character m of metadata): -- This is how I divide the entire text that I retrieved from the JTextPane into sentences: String[] lines = textPane.getText().split("\r?\n|\r", -1); The sentences in the textPane is separated with \n. Problem is, how can I manipulate the caret to let me know at which position and which line it is in? I know the dot of the caret says at which position it is, but I can't tell which line it is at. Assuming if I know which line the caret is, then I can just do lines[<line number>] and manipulate the string from there. In Short: How do I use CaretListener and/or DocumentListener to know which line the caret is currently at, and retrieve the line for further string manipulation? Please help. Thanks.     Millions of questions already on the web about how to tell whether the OS is 64-bit, but not whether IE and/or Java runtime is 64-bit. Some background: I installed 64-bit Win 7, and IE installed automatically with it from CD; I didn't download IE. I did download Java runtime. Mouseover tips in Control Panel!Programs shows it as: "Java 32-bit Java(TM) Control Panel" Then I went to http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and that page says... We have detected you may be viewing this page in a 32-bit browser. If you use 32-bit and 64-bit browsers interchangeably, you will need to install both 32-bit and 64-bit Java in order to have the Java plug-in for both browsers. But I cannot tell in the aftermath whether my Java is 64-bit. Evidently the "Java(TM) Control Panel" is, but I don't know if that's the same as the runtime. (I'm afraid to ask on the offical Java forums, because they're such a-holes.) Also, How do I issue a command to the OS to tell whether this IE is 64-bit? Help!About doesn't say on that. Thanks.

  • How can I tell which interface my Supemicro IPMI is piggybacking on?

    I've used IPMI before, but only on servers where the IPMI interface had a dedicated ethernet port. I've got an Ubuntu 10.04 server with two ethernet cards, which is supposed to have an IPMI interface on it (the motherboard is a Supermicro H8DMR-I2). From what I understand, the IPMI interface is piggybacking on one of the two NICs. Is there any way I can tell which NIC the IPMI interface is piggybacking on? Using ipmitool I've tried to set the IP address on the IPMI interface for the subnet for eth0, and then the subnet for eth1, and it's never reachable. (Can you even reach an IPMI interface from the same NIC it's piggybacking off of, or do you need to try connecting from a different machine on the network?) Also, is there anything special I need to do to enable it? I can access the IPMI interface locally using "ipmitool".
