• What does ObjectName(parameter) refer in the structure OBJECT_ATTRIBUTE?

  hi all, I found this structure called OBJECT_ATTRIBUTE in one of the nt dll functions..I was curious to know about that structure and I went through its documentation(msdn)...In the OBJECT_ATTRIBUTE structure there is a parameter called PUNICODE_STRING objectName...As per the msdn documentation..it says that the objectName "the name of the object for which a handle is to be opened" which is actually a name or some root directory,am confused with this.Can anybody explain this term "name of the object"(root directory).what it represents.

• Why I cannot get the output of ftp.exe ?

  I execute the ftp.exe cmd through a C# System.Diagnostics.Process type. And I use the following code to get the "ftp.exe" output after I programmatically enter a "help" command. But I can only get the first line of the result. And I never get to the "end" output part. The whole program seems blocked. • Is it best to make fewer calls to the database and output the results in an array?

  I'm trying to create a more succinct way to make hundreds of db calls. Instead of writing the whole query out every time I wanted to output a single field, I tried to port the code into a class that did all the query work. But if I want to output the price of that listing, I have to make another call to getListingInfo(). This makes another query on the db and again returns only the first row. This is much more succinct than writing the entire query each time, but I feel like I may be calling the db too often. Is there a better way to output the data from my class and still be succinct in accessing it (maybe outputting all the rows to an array and returning the array)? If yes, How?

• Stale statistics on a newly created temporary table in a stored procedure can lead to poor performance

  When you create a temporary table you expect a new table with no past history (statistics based on past existence), this is not true if you have less than 6 updates to the temporary table. This might lead to poor performance of queries which are sensitive to the content of temporary tables.I was optimizing SQL Server Performance at one of my customers who provides search functionality on their website. They use stored procedure with temporary table for the search. The performance of the search depended on who searched what in the past, option (recompile) by itself had no effect. Sometimes a simple search led to timeout because of non-optimal plan usage due to this behavior. This is not a plan caching issue rather temporary table statistics caching issue, which was part of the temporary object caching feature that was introduced in SQL Server 2005 and is also present in SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2012. In this customer case we implemented a workaround to avoid this issue (see below for example for workarounds).When temporary tables are cached, the statistics are not newly created rather cached from the past and updated based on automatic update statistics threshold. Caching temporary tables/objects is good for performance, but caching stale statistics from the past is not optimal.We can work around this issue by disabling temporary table caching by explicitly executing a DDL statement on the temporary table. One possibility is to execute an alter table statement, but this can lead to duplicate constraint name error on concurrent stored procedure execution. The other way to work around this is to create an index.I think there might be many customers in such a situation without knowing that stale statistics are being cached along with temporary table leading to poor performance.Ideal solution is to have more aggressive statistics update when the temporary table has less number of rows when temporary table caching is used. I will open a connect item to report this issue.Meanwhile you can mitigate the issue by creating an index on the temporary table. You can monitor active temporary tables using Windows Server Performance Monitor counter: SQL Server: General Statistics->Active Temp Tables.   Assume I have a stream of records that need to have some computation. Records will have a combination of these functions run Sum, Aggregate, Sum over the last 90 seconds, or ignore. A data record looks like this: Date;Data;ID Question Assuming that ID is an int of some kind, and that int corresponds to a matrix of some delegates to run, how should I use C# to dynamically build that launch map? I'm sure this idea exists... it is used in Windows Forms which has many delegates/events, most of which will never actually be invoked in a real application. The sample below includes a few delegates I want to run (sum, count, and print) but I don't know how to make the quantity of delegates fire based on the source data. • SSRS 2005 - Cascading parameters and default value update problem

  I have a report with cascading parameters. The first parameter is Finanical Period Type, being either Month or Week. The second parameter is a list of either financial months or weeks depending on what was selected for the first parameter. This all works well and selecting a series of different Financial Period Types in sequence correctly updates the second parameter's values. However I now wish to add a default value for the second parameter, which is once again dependent on the first parameter. So I've added an additional field to the dataset populating the second parameter called DefaultPeriod and set the second parameter's default value to be retrieved from the above field. The first time I select the Financial Period Type, the default is correctly set. However changing the Financial Period Type results in an updated list for the second parameter, but the default is incorrect. It remains set to the original default value, even thought the dataset has been refresh and the DefaultPeriod field is correct. This is both an issue in the IDE and on the Report Manager site.

  I have a JSONValue in my Java that may be a JSONArray, a JSONObject, a JSONString, etc. I want to pass it to a JSNI function that can accept any of those types. If I naively write my JSNI as something like: public final native jsni(Object parameter) /*-{ doSomething(parameter); }-*/; public void useFunction(JSONValue value) { jsni(value); //Throws js exception at runtime :( } then I get a javascript exception, because GWT doesn't know how to convert the JSONValue to a JavaScriptObject (or native string / number value). • Working with Reporting Services Filters–Part 1

  There are two ways that you can filter data in Reporting Services. The first way, which usually provides a faster performance, is to use query parameters to apply a filter using the WHERE clause in a SQL statement. In that case, the structure of the filter depends upon the syntax recognized by the source database. Another way to filter data in Reporting Services is to apply a filter to a dataset, data region, or a group. Using this latter method, you can even apply multiple filters. However, the use of filter operators or the setup of multiple filters is not always obvious, so in this series of posts, I'll provide some more information about the configuration of filters. First, why not use query parameters exclusively for filtering? Here are a few reasons: You might want to apply a filter to part of the report, but not all of the report. Your dataset might retrieve data from a stored procedure, and doesn't allow you to pass a query parameter for filtering purposes. Your report might be set up as a snapshot on the report server and, in that case, cannot be dynamically filtered based on a query parameter. Next, let's look at how to set up a report filter in general. The process is the same whether you are applying the filter to a dataset, data region, or a group. When you go to the Filters page in the Properties dialog box for whichever of these items you selected (dataset, data region, group), you click the Add button to create a new filter. The interface looks like this: The Expression field is usually a field in the dataset, so to make it easier for you to make a selection,the drop-down list displays all of the current dataset fields. But notice the expression button to the right, which means that you can set up any type of expression-not just a dataset field. To the right of the expression button, you'll find a data type drop-down list. It's important to specify the correct data type for the field or expression you're using. Now for the operators. Here's a list of the options that you have: This Operator Performs This Action =, <>, >, >=, <, <=, Like Compares expression to value Top N, Bottom N Compares expression to Top (Bottom) set of N values (N = integer) Top %, Bottom % Compares expression to Top (Bottom) N percent of values (N = integer or float) Between Determines whether expression is between two values, inclusive In Determines whether expression is found in list of values Last, the Value is what you're comparing to the expression using the operator. The construction of a filter using some operators (=, <>, >, etc.) is fairly simple. If my dataset (for AdventureWorks data) has a Category field, and I have a parameter that prompts the user for a single category, I can set up a filter like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value [Category] Text = [@Category] But if I set the parameter to accept multiple values, I need to change the operator from = to In, just as I would have to do if I were using a query parameter. The parameter expression, [@Category], which translates to =Parameters!Category.Value, doesn’t need to change because it represents an array as soon as I change the parameter to allow multiple values. The “In” operator requires an array. With that in mind, let’s consider a variation on Value. Let’s say that I have a parameter that prompts the user for a particular year – and for simplicity’s sake, this parameter only allows a single value, and I have an expression that evaluates the previous year based on the user’s selection. Then I want to use these two values in two separate filters with an OR condition. That is, I want to filter either by the year selected OR by the year that was computed. If I create two filters, one for each year (as shown below), then the report will only display results if BOTH filter conditions are met – which would never be true. Expression Data Type Operator Value [CalendarYear] Integer = [@Year] [CalendarYear] Integer = =Parameters!Year.Value-1 To handle this scenario, we need to create a single filter that uses the “In” operator, and then set up the Value expression as an array. To create an array, we use the Split function after creating a string that concatenates the two values (highlighted in yellow) as shown below. Expression Data Type Operator Value =Cstr(Fields!CalendarYear.Value) Text In =Split( CStr(Parameters!Year.Value) + ”,” + CStr(Parameters!Year.Value-1) , “,”) Note that in this case, I had to apply a string conversion on the year integer so that I could concatenate the parameter selection with the calculated year. Pay attention to the second argument of the Split function—you must use a comma delimiter for the result to work correctly with the In operator. I also had to change the Expression value from [CalendarYear] (or =Fields!CalendarYear.Value) so that the expression would return a string that I could compare with the values in the string array. My email server is working perfectly. It marks spam in subject and headers using spamassasin.   I need to find an optimal set of "n" parameter values that minimize an objective function (a 2-hr simulation of a system). I have looked at genetic algorithm and simulated annealing methods, but was wondering if there are any better algorithms and guidance on their merits and limitations. With the above optimization methods I can find the optimal parameter values that hold true for the entire simulation duration. Incase, I want to find the optimal "time varying" parameter values (parameter values change with time during the 2-hr simulation), are there any methods/ideas other than making each time varying parameter value a variable to optimize? Any thoughts?

  This problem is driving me nuts. CS0016: Could not write to output file 'c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework<64\vX.X.XXXX\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\XXXXXX\XXXXXX\App_Web_XXXX.aspx.XXXXXXXX.XXXXXXXX.dll' -- 'The directory name is invalid. ' Tried to give full access to network service on C:\windows\temp and the temp folder in v4.0.xxx folder. Been searching hi and low online but no one has the right answer for this. Server is Windows Server 2008r2, SQL Server 2008r2 is installed on the same server. I believe that it could have something to do with SQL Server being installed after the .NET Framework 4.0 was installed, but I did a aspnet_regiis.exe -u and then -i to reinstall. Tried from both Framework folder and Framework64 folder, still no luck Anybody outthere with the same problem? Thanks in advance, Christian

• Can I get my video card to output a DVI and VGA signal at the same time?

  Hey All, I've got: a lovely 24" monitor, w/both DVI and VGA inputs, a personal desktop w/a Radeon HD Pro 2400 video card (both DVI and VGA outputs) a work laptop w/both outputs, and a KVM switch that handles VGA only Right now I've got laptop connected to the monitor's VGA, and the desktop connected to the DVI. This works, but requires me to switch the KVM and monitor input sources separately, which annoys me (I switch back & forth a lot to make skype calls & manage my music). I'd like to feed both VGA and DVI signals out of my desktop so I can do quick things on my desktop & switch right back, but then when I'm done working, switch the monitor over to DVI to get the crisper picture. Alas, just attaching both VGA and DVI cables to my desktop's video card did not do the trick. Can this card be persuaded to output both signals at the same time? Many thanks! -Roy

  I am using GNU/Linux and BASH shell, What i wanted to do is in server is to i need to be able to download the files stating with B* and D* and then rename them to ~B* and ~D*(same file name just ~ in-front) i wrote following which works fine for the downloading part ideally i would like it to use ls command output as well but dont know how to do that. cd inbox get D* get B* ls B*|rename $0 ~B.* bye Any idea ? ideally what i would like to do is ls command to send the list of files one by one to the get command and then the once the get command is completed i want rename command executed renaming the server files

• Is it possible to format ps RSS (memory) output to be more human friendly?

  Executing ps ux returns a nice list of process information, easy to grep through or watch. However, there doesn't seem to be much flexibility in the memory usage output; the RSS (resident set size) is printed in kB, which for large processes is hard to read (especially at a glance), and %MEM gives 100 × RSS / system_memory. The du utility has a lovely -h flag which prints space in a more user friendly fashion. I have not been able to find anything equivalent for ps. Is there a special formatting trick that can accomplish this?
