• SQL Server Table locks in long query - Solution: NoLock?

  a report in my application runs a query that needs between 5 - 15 seconds (constrained to count of rows that will be returned). The query has 8 joins to nearly all main-tables of my application (Customers, sales, units etc). A little tool shows me, that in this time, all those 8 tables are locked with a shared table lock. That means, no update operation will be done in this time. A solution from a friend is, to have every join in the query, which is not mandetory to have 100% correct data (dirty read), with a NoLock, so only 1 of this 8 tables will be locked completly. Is that a good solution? For a report in which 99% of data came from one table, unlock the less prio tables?

  This is what my LinearLayout (horizontal) row looks like: I want the text of the checkbox to be on one line; The buttons don't have to be that wide - they'll still have plenty of space with the checkbox text lengthened a bit. • Using Spring's KeyHolder with programmatically-generated primary keys

  Hello, I am using Spring's NamedParameterJdbcTemplate to perform an insert into a table. The table uses a NEXTVAL on a sequence to obtain the primary key. I then want this generated ID to be passed back to me. I am using Spring's KeyHolder implementation like this: KeyHolder key = new GeneratedKeyHolder(); jdbcTemplate.update(Constants.INSERT_ORDER_STATEMENT, params, key); However, when I run this statement, I am getting: org.springframework.dao.DataRetrievalFailureException: The generated key is not of a supported numeric type. Unable to cast [oracle.sql.ROWID] to [java.lang.Number] at org.springframework.jdbc.support.GeneratedKeyHolder.getKey(GeneratedKeyHolder.java:73) Any ideas what I am missing?

• How to refresh DataGrid and DropDown on main page after hiding modal popup

  Hi, I am adding records to a database from a modal popup. After hiding the modal popup, the page has not been refreshed even though I have Rebound the controls. I have reviewed a few postings on the web about this but the solution still evades me. I have attached my code after removing some of the extra detail... • continuous music on website

  Hi all, I'm against it as I'm sure ALL of you are, but my client wants background music on their website. I'm very new to this, so was wondering how should I do that? I know I should use iframes, but what's the actual way of using them? eg: do I just create the home page with 2 frames (one for the music, one for the rest of the website), and then every time the user clicks on a link I can load the usual destination page - or should I update all pages in some way to make sure they are 'frames enabled'? Also, I do I style the frame to make sure it's hidden? thanks, Patrick ps please don't reopen the discussion about why background music is not good - I do know that and personally hate it. But the client is adamant and paying for it so... ;)

• Integrating GSL onto iPhone Xcode

  I have been trying to integrate GSL (Gnu Scientific Library) into an iPhone project using Xcode. The challenge is GSL has all the modules in different folders, yet when their header files are reference, they often reference instead of or . At least with I could use Xcode's recursive header file search to find it. But with , basically file not found. Does anyone have an easy way to address the hierarchical GSL structure to compile into Xcode? I can do it the tedious way of fixing all the #INCLUDE lines but hoping there is a better alternative. This way, I can more easily update GSL when changes are made by the community. NOTE: I found Xcode needs to find the right header file locations (make sure to adjust your TARGET Build settings, not just your Project Build settings).

  Hi All, I am trying to set up a Approval workflow when item created and item updated event on a list and then update the approval status as workflow complete. Now when I create a new Item the workflow kicks off as expected. When I edit the same item and approve the item new workflow get started as the item get edit. It seems to be workflow falls in loop if I se an Approval workflow on new item created and Item Edit events. I Google for it and I found that Microsoft has come up with hotfix to overcome this issue. I have installed it on my machine but still the problem persist. Is there are any prerequisites needed for this ? or any other service pack or specific version of service pack needs be installed on machine to make this hotfix running.   Observer pattern? Where do i get examples of this in Java (i know google but was hoping for some personal insight also.) On to a proper explanation of my issue: i have 3 forms/windows. "board" is the main form that loads as the application. "chat" is where the text chat takes place. "network" is where network connection is established. i have the game (connect4) working locally and i would like to implement a networked version of it also. my idea is maybe it is related to Observer pattern to have a thread (or something) monitoring network state during runtime and update the chat and board forms of the current network status as well as delivering received data from the network. are my ideas valid? or how should i go about establishing network and network status updates throughout the application? thank you for your input.

  A handful of customers for my iPhone app are experiencing Core Data store corruption (I assume so, since the error is "Failed to save to data store: Operation could not be completed. (Cocoa error 259.)") Has anyone else experienced this kind of store corruption? I am worried since I aim to soon push an update which performs a schema migration, and I am worried that this will expose even more problems. I had assumed that the Core Data/SQLlite APIs use atomic operations and are immune to corruption except if the underlying filesystem experiences corruption. Is there a way to reduce/prevent corruption, or at least a good way to reproduce (I have been unsuccessful thus far).

  i have class Profile has_many :favorite_books, :dependent => :destroy has_many :favorite_quotes, :dependent => :destroy accepts_nested_attributes_for :favorite_books, :allow_destroy => true accepts_nested_attributes_for :favorite_quotes, :allow_destroy => true end I have a dynamic form where you press '+' to add new textareas for creating new favorites. What i want to do is ignore the blank ones, I find this harder to sort through in the update controller than a non nested attribute. What i have temporarily is a hack in the after_save callback deleting the empty records. Whats the most rails way to ignore these blank objects? I dont want validation and errors, just a silent deletion/ignore.

• Perl references not returning correct values

  Hi, this is my first time asking a question here so apologies if I am not following any conventions correctly. I encountered a bug in some Perl code that basically lost any parameters in the URL after the first name-value pair and the solution was to use the URI::Escape function on the URL. After this change I decided to move code that does this to a Perl module (Utils.pm) so that any future changes only need to be made once in this file, rather than have to update every file that uses it. The problem I seem to have is that the user, passwd and priv variables don't seem to return the correct values - the system still allows you to sign in but it can't identify your name or the privileges that you have. Below is a link to a pastebin of the code I believe to be relevant to the problem. I believe it is to do with the references but any changes I make just break the page! • struct method linking

  I'm updating some old code that has several POD structs that were getting zero'd out by memset (don't blame me...I didn't write this part). Part of the update changed some of them to classes that use private internal pointers that are now getting wiped out by the memset. So I added a [non-virtual] reset() method to the various structs and refactored the code to call that instead. One particular struct developed an "undefined reference to `blah::reset()'" error. Changing it from a struct to a class fixed the error. Calling nm on the .o file h, the mangled function names for that method look the same (whether it's a class or a struct). I'm using g++ 4.4.1, on Ubuntu. I hate the thought that this might be a compiler/linker bug, but I'm not sure what else it could be. Am I missing some fundamental difference between structs and classes? I thought the only meaningful ones were the public/private defaults and the way everyone thinks about them.

• Creating a dynamic (video) Overlay on Google Maps on Android 2.1

  I'm trying to create a map overlay for displaying a video stream (MJPEG) on top of a Mapview. Currently I've a standalone activity that creates a data thread for fetching MJPEG video frames. I'm using a handler to send a frame (as a Bitmap) from the data thread to the main activity which then updates the UI. I'm not sure how I can implement "refresh" for updating my "overlayed" video stream. EDIT: What I mean by "refresh" is - how can I update the video portion (not the mapview) of my UI whenever I get a new video frame. I plan to paint the video frame (bitmap) in the "draw method" of my implementation of the Overlay subclass. But the "draw" method is not invoked by me directly. Thanks.

• The Benefits of Constants

  I understand one of the big deals about constants is that you don't have to go through and update code where that constant is used all over the place. Thats great, but let's say you don't explicitly declare it as a constant. What benefit(s) exist(s) to take a variable that HAPPENS to actually not be changed and make it a constant, will this save on processing, and/or size of code...etc? Basically I have a program that the compiler is saying that a particular variable is not changed and thus can be declared a constant, I just wanted to know what the benefit to adding the constant qualifier to it would be, if it makes no difference then making that change adds no value and thus no point wasting time (this same scenario occurs in more then one place) going back and "fixing" all these variables.   These permalinks above are rerouted to my page: page.php?permalink=events/foo page.php?permalink=events/foo/ page.php?permalink=ru/events/foo page.php?permalink=ru/events/foo/ The events is dynamic, it could be specials or packages. My dilemma is basically; I need to detect an empty link in order so I can feed a robots no index meta tag in the case of: page.php?permalink=events page.php?permalink=events/ page.php?permalink=ru/events/ page.php?permalink=ru/events I can't use a simple pattern such as [a-zA-Z]+\/?(.+)/ since it won't work on the i18n permalinks. What regex could I use which would detect this, using $_GET['permalink'] as the reference to the permalinks? And avoid false positives? Update: Empty link means there's no fragment after the "events/" part. These are empty: page.php?permalink=events page.php?permalink=events/ page.php?permalink=ru/events/ page.php?permalink=ru/events

• ASP.NET State Error

  I am have an asp.net page, where a list of products is shown in a drop down. When a user selects an item, corresponding price, available quantity etc. are shown in the corresponding text boxes. I have used ajax update panel to retrieve these information. This approach seems to work nicely. But sometimes when a product is selected, it takes too long for the price, quantities to change, and sometimes they don't even change. Then I used firebug to see what happened to the ajax request, and I found out that the response that is coming from the server is something like this - 70|error|500|The state information is invalid for this page and might be corrupted.| I have absolutely no idea what is wrong here.............

  I have a project that was developed into a Expression Engine template. I used the Core version of EE to develop this template on my local machine. Now I need to export this template/weblog so it can be loaded onto the production server so the client can begin using EE to update their site. The issue I am running into is how to export the templates plus the weblogs that go along with the template. This is my first time using EE so if you know how to accomplish this please explain it in detail. Thank you in advance.

• C# Process flow - Datastream, XML and datagrid

  Im looking for some advice/suggestions on how I should setup the work flow of a small application Im building. When the application is launched the datagrid will be populated via the XML file. Once running the application will receive a datastream that I hope to update the file and datagrid. So Im curious what you would suggest on how I setup the workflow (ie, split the data from the data stream and simultaneously populate the file and grid or would you suggest populating the XML file first and setting up a timer to have the grid read the file?) Im really looking for optimal performance.
