• ANTLR C grammar, optional init_declarator_list?

- by eisbaw
Hello, In the ANSI C grammar for ANTLR v3 ( http://antlr.org/grammar/1153358328744/C.g ), how can init_declarator_list be optional in rule declaration ? Instead of: | declaration_specifiers init_declarator_list? ';' -I would say: | declaration_specifiers init_declarator_list ';' What part of the C standard allows statements like: int; EDIT: I just tried, it is allowed! Okay then, why is it allowed?

• Strange macro declaration in C

- by Andrey Atapin
Exploring libusb-1.0.9 source code, I have found such line (./os/poll_windows.c:78): #define CHECK_INIT_POLLING do {if(!is_polling_set) init_polling();} while(0) As for me this is the same like: #define CHECK_INIT_POLLING if(!is_polling_set) init_polling(); Is there any reason to loop that expression? UPDATE: I couldn't still realize what'd be wrong after the answers, and the following example helped: #include <stdio.h> #define TEST if(test) foo(); #define TEST_DO do { if(test) foo(); } while(0) int test = 1; void foo() { printf("%s", "Foo called"); } int main(int argc, char** argv) { if(argc > 1) TEST_DO; /* LINE 12 */ else printf("%s", "skipping..."); return 0; } If you put TEST at line 12, a compiler will give an error "error: ‘else’ without a previous ‘if’". Hope, this will help someone.

• Declaration of struct variables in other class when obtained by getters

- by liaK
Hi, I am using Qt 4.5 so do C++. I have a class like this class CClass1 { private: struct stModelDetails { QString name; QString code; ..... // only variables and no functions over here }; QList<stModelDetails> m_ModelDetailsList; public: QList<stModelDetails> getModelDetailsList(); ... }; In this I have functions that will populate the m_ModelDetailsList; I have another class say CClassStructureUsage, where I will call the getModelDetailsList() function. Now my need is that I have to traverse the QList and obtain the name, code from each of the stModelDetails. Now the problem is even the CClass1's header file is included it is not able to identify the type of stModelDetails in CClassStructureUsage. When I get the structure list by QList<stModelDetails> ModelList = obj->getModelInformationList(); it says stModelDetails : undeclared identifier. How I can able to fetch the values from the structure? Am I doing anything wrong over here?

• List.AddRange inline declaration

- by AJ
Hello, This may seem an easy question, but not to me, also a search has led to nothing. Up until now the only .net programming I have done is with Delphi Prism. With Prism I can do things like: var l := new List<String>(['A','B','C']); or var l := new List<String>; l.AddRange(['A','B','C']; but can I do a similar thing in C#, or do I have to do it like: var a = new String[] {"A","B","C"}; var l = new List<String>(a); Thanks, AJ

• Are there any free Xml Diff/Merge tools available?

- by Russell
I have several config files in my .net applications which I would like to merge application settings elements etc. I was about to begin doing it manually as I usually do, however thought there must be an XML diff GUI tool available somewhere. The tool would be able to go to the element level to compare and display the differences etc. However Google gave no substantive free tool results and no hints for anything of value. Is such a tool available? That is very useful? For free? Thanks in advance. :) Edit: Here is a bit of clarification of the functionality that would turn my error-prone, tedious manual job into a 1-minute simpler task (and potential to automate): In KDiff3, you can do a diff/merge of entire directories. There is a hierarchical diff which is very accurate, user-friendly and clear. I was interested in finding a similar solution, however instead of directory hierarchy, an XML element hierarchy. If there is no such open source software, I am considering creating one on CodePlex to provide this functionality.

I have a sequence of number like follows 1 - 25, 2 - 60, 3 - 80, 4 - 100 and so on which means that if input is 1 output will be 25 and so on...I need to store it in global array.I would like to use it in multiple pages also.In codeigniter where i can declare a global array and store all these? I am trying like as follows in constants.php $CONFIDENCEVALUE = array(); $CONFIDENCEVALUE[] = array('1'=>25,'2'=>'60','3'=>80,'4'=>100); If it is correct how can access these array value in required pages.Help me please.I am not an expert with codeignitor.Thanks

• Initializing a array after declaration

- by robUK
Hello, gcc 4.4.3 c89 I have the following code as a sample of what I am trying to do. I don't know the actual size of the array, until I enter the function. However, I don't think I can set the array size after I have declared it. I need it global as some other functions will need to access the device names. Many thanks for any suggestions, /* global */ char *devices_names[]; void fill_devices(size_t num_devices) { devices_names[num_devices]; /* start filling */ }

• C++ header file and function declaration ending in "= 0"

- by Adam
hi, I have the following code inside the .h file and I'm not sure what does the assignment statement do and how is it called properly? virtual void yield() = 0; I thought that the function returns a value of 0 by default but since this function returns void I am a little bit confused. Can anyone comment on this and maybe say how can I refer to this assignment, I mean how is it called in C++ jargon? Thanks.

• C/C++ definitions of functions

- by Vit
Yesterday, I have been watching discussion here, about compilers and linkers. It was about C library function definitions. I have never thought of that, so it inspired me to do some searching, but I cannot find exactly what I want. I wonder, what is the smallest syntax you need to add into your source code to enable just printf() function. I mean the function declaration from stdio.h you need.

• Are "strings.xml" string arrays always parsed/deserialized in the same order?

- by PhilaPhan80
Can I count on string arrays within the "strings.xml" resource file to be parsed/deserialized in the same order every time? If anyone can cite any documentation that clearly spells out this guarantee, I'd appreciate it. Or, at the very least, offer a significant amount of experience with this topic. Also, is this a best practice or am I missing a simpler solution? Note: This will be a small list, so I'm not looking to implement a more complicated database or custom XML solution unless I absolutely have to. <string-array name="keys">
1

2

3
</string-array> <string-array name="values">
one

two

three
</string-array>

• javascript var declaration within loop

- by Trouts
hello, /*Test scope problem*/ for(var i=1; i<3; i++){ //declare variables var no = i; //verify no alert('setting '+no); //timeout to recheck setTimeout(function(){ alert('test '+no); }, 500); } it alerts "setting 1" and "setting 2" as expected, but after the timeout it outputs "test 2" twice - for some reason the variable "no" is not reset after the first loop... i've found only an "ugly" workaround... /*Test scope problem*/ var func=function(no){ //verify no alert('setting '+no); //timeout to recheck setTimeout(function(){ alert('test '+no); }, 500); } for(var i=1; i<3; i++){ func(i); } Any ideas on how to workaround this problem in a more direct way? or is this the only way?

• How to use XML namespace prefixes without xmlns="..." everywhere? (.NET)

- by LonelyPixel
The subject is probably too short to explain it... I'm writing out XML files with no namespace stuff at all, for some application. That part I cannot change. But now I'm going to extend those files with my own application-defined element names, and I'd like to put them in a different namespace. For this, the result should look like this: <doc xmlns:x="urn:my-app-uri"> existing element name <x:addon>my additional element name</x:addon> </doc> I've used an XmlNamespaceManager and added my URI with the prefix "x" to it. I've also passed it to each CreateElement for my additional element names. But the nearest I can get is this: <doc> existing element name <addon xmlns="urn:my-app-uri">my additional element name</addon> </doc> Or maybe also <x:addon xmlns:x="urn:my-app-uri">my additional element name</x:addon> So the point is that my URI is written to every single of my additional elements, and no common prefix is written to the document element where I'd like to have it. How can I get the above XML result with .NET?

• function declaration

- by robUK
Hello, gcc 4.1.2 c89 I am reviewing some code and I have come across the following function. I have never seen a function declared like this before. There are no data types for the paraemeters. My best guess is that the function is using a list of data types separated by semi-colons. The return type seems to be returning a function with those parameters. However, the read function is not defined anywhere. What is the advantage and purpose of declaring a function like this? Many thanks for any advice, int my_read(fd, ptr, cnt) int fd; char *ptr; unsigned cnt; { printf("Read\n"); return(read(fd, ptr, cnt)); }

• Force the use of interface instead of concrete implementation in declaration (.NET)

- by gammelgul
In C++, you can do the following: class base_class { public: virtual void do_something() = 0; }; class derived_class : public base_class { private: virtual void do_something() { std::cout << "do_something() called"; } }; The derived_class overrides the method do_something() and makes it private. The effect is, that the only way to call this method is like this: base_class *object = new derived_class(); object->do_something(); If you declare the object as of type derived_class, you can't call the method because it's private: derived_class *object = new derived_class(); object->do_something(); // --> error C2248: '::derived_class::do_something' : cannot access private member declared in class '::derived_class' I think this is quite nice, because if you create an abstract class that is used as an interface, you can make sure that nobody accidentally declares a field as the concrete type, but always uses the interface class. Since in C# / .NET in general, you aren't allowed to narrow the access from public to private when overriding a method, is there a way to achieve a similar effect here?
