Needless to say this is not even close to being there and watching the rest of the sessions, as you don’t get to choose what is shown. But, let’s get back to the topic - there is a full day of Windows Phone 7 Developer topics. I am speaking at 2 sessions: 8:30 AM Prototyping with SketchFlow SketchFlow is a new feature in Expression Blend 3 that enables rapid prototyping of web sites and applications. SketchFlow helps designers, developers, information architects and account managers sketch, wireframe and prototype user experiences and user interfaces. [yes, I will show a some WP7 related SketchFlow towards the end] 9:45 AM Intro to Windows Phone 7 This session will be discussing and showing the new WP7 OS and how new methods of navigation work. This is relevant to understand before you start building your first app. One of the sessions later in the day will be a Install Fest and one will be a code-along, so bring your laptop, if you want. You will find Kevin Wolf, Bill Reiss and I to ask questions at the panel at the end of the day. I will be hanging out all day at the Mobile track and as always during lunch and after dinner. • View Word Definitions in IE 8 with the Define with Bing Accelerator

  Do you need an easy way to view word definitions while browsing with Internet Explorer? The Define with Bing Accelerator will display definitions in the same (or a new) tab and save you time while browsing. Using Define with Bing The installation consists of two steps. First, click on Add to Internet Explorer to start the process. Next you will be asked to confirm the installation. Once you have clicked Add your new accelerator is ready to use (no browser restart required). Whenever you encounter a word that needs defining highlight it, click on the small blue square, go to All Accelerators, and then Define with Bing. There are two ways to access the definition: Hover your mouse over the Define with Bing text to open a small popup window Click on Define with Bing to open a definition search in a new tab Being able to access a definition or explanation in the same tab will definitely save you time while browsing. In the example shown here you can get an idea of what SCORM means but clicking on the links inside the popup window is not recommended (webpage opens in popup and is not resizable). In the situation shown above it is better to click on Define with Bing and see more information in a new tab. Conclusion The Define with Bing Accelerator can be a very useful time saver while browsing with Internet Explorer. Finding those word definitions will be a much more pleasant experience now.   I recently wrote about the Life Insurance Conference held in Washington, DC last month. This week I was both an attendee and guest speaker the 13th Annual Future of Life Assurance Conference held at The Guoman Tower in London, UK. It's amazing that these two conferences were held on opposition sides of the Atlantic Ocean and addressed many of the same session topics and themes. Insurance is certainly a global industry! This year's conference was attended by many of the leading carriers and CEOs in the UK and across Europe.The sessions included a strong lineup of keynote speakers and panel discussions from carriers such as Legal & General, Skandia, Aviva, Standard Life, Friends Provident, LV=, Zurich UK, Barclays and Scottish Life. Sessions topics addressed a variety of business and regulatory issues including: Ensuring a profitable future Key priorities in regulation The future of advice The impact of the RDR on distribution Bancassurance Gaining control of the customer relationship Revitalizing product offerings In addition, Oracle speakers (Glenn Lottering and myself) led specific sessions on gearing up for Solvency II and speeding product development through adaptive rules-based systems. The main themes that played throughout many of the sessions included: change is here, focusing on customers, the current economic crisis has been challenging and the industry needs to get back to the basics and simplify - simplify - simplify. To enable auto corrections feature on the on-screen keyboard of iOS 5 follow these steps Download iBackupBot and install it on your machine. It’s works on both Windows and Mac OS X. Backup your iPhone, iPod, or iPad with iTunes – plug in your iOS device and sync it. Open iBackupBot, locate your most recent backup and click on it Scroll down to Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboard.plist and double-click on it.   Replace everything between the two <dict> with the following <key>KeyboardAutocorrectionLists</key> <string>YES</string> Save the plist file, then hit the "Restore From Backup" button in iBackupbot.   Hey Guys! I’m back with the updates, it was an awesome Monday morning, for me it started when Sun came on my face, and the time was 5:30AM~~ I was amazed that this part of the country gets the sunrise quite early, but I ignored the sunlight for a while by covering my face, but…finally the door knocked….~ It was Mukesh, and the time was 6 AM, so I thought let’s get rid of laziness and start my day~ After having my brush and bath, I shaved and we headed for the Breakfast~ We quickly had our bread butter jam combo, and left for the Auditorium for Registration~ We searched for our names and signed the Registration paper and got a cool IIM C bag, with following in it: - a IIMC Notepad - Cello X Caliber pen - a book “What the Best MBAs Know”, and - Reading Material for Campus Sessions Today we had lectures on “Evolution of Indian Corporate Sector” (2 Session of 1.5 hrs each) and “Indian Economy: Crisis & Response” (2 Sessions of 1.5 hrs). “Evolution of Indian Corporate Sector” was by Prof. Raghabendra Chattopadhyay, was one of my best lectures I’ve ever attended in my life, he started with a question that saying that “The Indian Capitalists didn’t wanted the economy to open up till the economic reforms occurred?”, he is one of the best story tellers I’ve ever met, he started with the ancient European and Indian history and linked the trade & economics with it, simply amazing~ I can’t believe I didn’t get bore even after a 2hour long session…awesome~~ Afterward we had our lunch break, we did our lunch in “New Hostel” building and got back for “Indian Economy” sessions. Indian Economy session was taken by Sudip Chaudhuri, for us he’s a well known face as we have already attended his sessions on Macroeconomics~ It was an interactive, easy going, and a laughable session, and we did discussed some serious issues as well. After the class got over we went out and got few T-Shirts and Mugs for ourselves, and yep not to forget it “Rained” in Kolkata today~~ We got back and had our dinner and dispersed finally… I loved this amazing Monday, and hope the spirit continues till Saturday~ I’m feeling the enrichment in my thought and perceptions~ I’m lovin’ it~~ ram :)

• The biggest ADF conference "down under"

  While Oracle Open World is the place to be for ADF presentations, for Aussies living in Perth, San Francisco is a tad far away (believe me from experience, the 23hrs flight from PER-SYD-SFO is tedious).  That's why I'm very excited to see that the Australian Oracle User Group at this year's Perth conference is running its largest set of ADF presentation to date: 5! Okay, it doesn't compare to the 60 ADF sessions at OOW, but it's a small conference of around 300 people that runs for 2 days with 54 sessions total, not 40000 people that runs for 5 days with 1900+ sessions, so I think that's a good effort for a conference that's at the end of the earth! • [MINI HOW-TO] Repair Missing External Hard Drive Database Error in WHS

  If you’re using external hard drives with your Windows Home Server, they might get unplugged and create an error. Here we look at running the Repair Wizard to quickly fix the issue. If an external drive that is included in your drive pool becomes unplugged or loses power, you might see the following error under Home Network Health when opening the WHS Console. To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly and click Repair. The wizard launches and you’ll need to agree that you may lose data during the repair of the backup database. In this example it was a simple problem where an external drive became unplugged from the server…so you can close out of the wizard. If you look under Server Storage you can see the drive is missing…To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly. WHS will add the drive back into the pool and when finished you’ll see it listed as healthy and good to go. Using external drives that are part of your storage pool may not be the best way to have your home built WHS setup, but if you do, expect occasional errors such as this. • Problem with recursive rar archiving non-ascii filenames

  Say I want to create a backup of folder MainFolder's content using rar. The command rar a Backup.rar -r MainFolder does the job. BUT, if a subdirectory contains more than one file named with non-ASCII (?) characters, then only one of them is archived and the others get excluded. For example, consider the following directory hierarchy (MainFolder, A and B are folders; a, b, ? and ? are files) +MainFolder +A -a -b -? -? +B -a -b -a -b -? -? then the command rar a Backup.rar -r MainFolder skips MainFolder/A/? MainFolder/? while rar a Backup.rar -r MainFolder/* still skips MainFolder/A/? Why is it so? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks! For the record, I already encountered some issues with non-ascii characters (see this question) that other Linux distributions seem not to have. Anyway, I use Lubuntu 12.04, terminal is lxterminal and echo $BASH_VERSION returns 4.2.25(1)-release. rar version is 4.00 beta 3. Another curiosity: right-clicking on the folder and selecting Compress... and then .rar still has the same problem. Other options (zip, tar...) behave correctly.

• Don't miss Virtual Developer Day - All about ADF next week

  In case you haven't heard we are holding a free online virtual developer day next week - July 10th that you should attend - even if you think you already know ADF. While one of the tracks is aimed at developer who are relatively new to ADF - and cover ADF Faces, ADF Controller and a comparison of productivity with Forms and other tools - the two other tracks have great content on some topics that you might not be familiar with even if you already work with ADF. This include sessions about the upcoming ADF Mobile, The new ADF support in Eclipse and information about Application Life Cycle Management with ADF and JDeveloper. As well as sessions that will open your mind to the areas where ADF integrates with other Fusion Middleware Solutions such as ADF integration with BI, WebCenter and SOA. • Consultations with ATG Development at OpenWorld 2014

  Our OpenWorld 2014 San Francisco conference is about six weeks away.  We have a great lineup of sessions this year.  Our EBS Applications Technology track sessions are listed here, and we'll have a more-detailed article about those soon. One of the advantages of attending OpenWorld is that you can meet face-to-face with senior staff in ATG Development.  You can use these meetings to discusss your questions, requirements, plans, and deployment architectures with us. There are several options for doing this: At general sessions: collar the speaker of your choice after his or her presentation. At the Meet The Experts sessions:  these are first-come first-served round-table discussions Setting up private meetings via your Oracle account manager The last option is best if you have lots of in-depth questions or confidential details about your implementation that cannot be discussed in front of other customers.  Many of this blog's experts, including me, will be attending OpenWorld this year.  If you'd like to meet with us privately, please contact your Oracle account manager to arrange that as soon as possible.  My calendar, in particular, is already starting to fill up.  It is often completely full by the time OpenWorld starts. • Create a system image in Windows 8

  One of the things that I've just come to accept is that the designers of Windows 8 and I think very differently.It'll take a long time to convince me that shutting down the computer is a "setting". Even after using Windows 8 for quite a while now, I still find that I struggle nearly every day, just trying to do things that I previously knew how to do. That's just not a good thing.Today I decided to create a system image as I hadn't made one lately. I started in Control Panel looking for Backup options. That yielded nothing except programs that wanted to "Save backup copies of my files with file history". I thought "oh well, let's just try the new search options". I hit the Windows key and typed "Backup". No, nothing came up there either.I searched again all over the Control Panel options to no avail.So it was time to hit Google again. Once again, clearly lots of people used to know how to do this and have been trying to work out where this option went.The first trick is that there are a bunch of Control Panel options that don't appear in the Control Panel. In the address bar at the top, if you click on Control Panel, you'll find there is an option that says "All Control Panel Options". That is curious given that's where I thought I was when I opened Control Panel. No hint is given on that screen that there are a bunch of hidden options. None the less, I then checked out "all" the options.The option that you need to create a system image in Windows 8 turns out to be the "Windows 7 File Recovery" option that appears in this extended list. Why does it say "Windows 7" when it's for "Windows 8" as well and I'm running "Windows 8"? Why do I have to choose an option that says "File Recovery" to create a system image backup?<sigh>But at least I've recorded it here for the next time I forget where to find it.

Venti (All Sessions, BOFs and Tutorials) To view slides paired with audio of each session, go to the JavaOne content catalog (JavaOne homepage, click on JavaOne Technical Sessions) and select a session. If a video is available, you'll see "Media" in the right column. Look under "Presentation Download" to get the slides. Sessions are being made available as quickly as possible. • Migrating SQL Server Databases – The DBA’s Checklist (Part 1)

  It is a fact of life: SQL Server databases change homes. They move from one instance to another, from one version to the next, from old servers to new ones.  They move around as an organisation’s data grows, applications are enhanced or new versions of the database software are released. If not anything else, servers become old and unreliable and databases eventually need to find a new home. Consider the following scenarios: 1.     A new  database application is rolled out in a production server from the development or test environment 2.     A copy of the production database needs to be installed in a test server for troubleshooting purposes 3.     A copy of the development database is regularly refreshed in a test server during the system development life cycle 4.     A SQL Server is upgraded to a newer version. This can be an in-place upgrade or a side-by-side migration 5.     One or more databases need to be moved between different instances as part of a consolidation strategy. The instances can be running the same or different version of SQL Server 6.     A database has to be restored from a backup file provided by a third party application vendor 7.     A backup of the database is restored in the same or different instance for disaster recovery 8.     A database needs to be migrated within the same instance: a.     Files are moved from direct attached storage to storage area network b.    The same database is copied under a different name for another application Migrating SQL Server database applications is a complex topic in itself. There are a number of components that can be involved: jobs, DTS or SSIS packages, logins or linked servers are only few pieces of the puzzle. However, in this article we will focus only on the central part of migration: the installation of the database itself. Unless it is an in-place upgrade, typically the database is taken from a source server and installed in a destination instance.  Most of the time, a full backup file is used for the rollout. The backup file is either provided to the DBA or the DBA takes the backup and restores it in the target server. Sometimes the database is detached from the source and the files are copied to and attached in the destination. Regardless of the method of copying, moving, refreshing, restoring or upgrading the physical database, there are a number of steps the DBA should follow before and after it has been installed in the destination. It is these post database installation steps we are going to discuss below. Some of these steps apply in almost every scenario described above while some will depend on the type of objects contained within the database.  Also, the principles hold regardless of the number of databases involved. Step 1:  Make a copy of data and log files when attaching and detaching When detaching and attaching databases, ensure you have made copies of the data and log files if the destination is running a newer version of SQL Server. This is because once attached to a newer version, the database cannot be detached and attached back to an older version. Trying to do so will give you a message like the following: Server: Msg 602, Level 21, State 50, Line 1 Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 6, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes. Connection Broken If you try to backup the attached database and restore it in the source, it will still fail. Similarly, if you are restoring the database in a newer version, it cannot be backed up or detached and put back in an older version of SQL. Unlike detach and attach method though, you do not lose the backup file or the original database here. When detaching and attaching a database, it is important you keep all the log files available along with the data files. It is possible to attach a database without a log file and SQL Server can be instructed to create a new log file, however this does not work if the database was detached when the primary file group was read-only. You will need all the log files in such cases. Step 2: Change database compatibility level Once the database has been restored or attached to a newer version of SQL Server, change the database compatibility level to reflect the newer version unless there is a compelling reason not to do so. When attaching or restoring from a previous version of SQL, the database retains the older version’s compatibility level.  The only time you would want to keep a database with an older compatibility level is when the code within your database is no longer supported by SQL Server. For example, outer joins with *= or the =* operators were still possible in SQL 2000 (with a warning message), but not in SQL 2005 anymore. If your stored procedures or triggers are using this form of join, you would want to keep the database with an older compatibility level.  For a list of compatibility issues between older and newer versions of SQL Server databases, refer to the Books Online under the sp_dbcmptlevel topic. Application developers and architects can help you in deciding whether you should change the compatibility level or not. You can always change the compatibility mode from the newest to an older version if necessary. To change the compatibility level, you can either use the database’s property from the SQL Server Management Studio or use the sp_dbcmptlevel stored procedure.   Bear in mind that you cannot run the built-in reports for databases from SQL Server Management Studio if you keep the database with an older compatibility level. The following figure shows the error message I received when trying to run the “Disk Usage by Top Tables” report against a database. This database was hosted in a SQL Server 2005 system and still had a compatibility mode 80 (SQL 2000).     Continues…
