• Does INNER JOIN performance depends on order of tables?

  A question suddenly came to my mind while I was tuning one stored procedure. Let me ask it - I have two tables, table1 and table2. table1 contains huge data and table2 contains less data. Is there performance-wise any difference between these two queries(I am changing order of the tables)? Query1: SELECT t1.col1, t2.col2 FROM table1 t1 INNER JOIN table2 t2 ON t1.col1=t2.col2 Query2: SELECT t1.col1, t2.col2 FROM table2 t2 INNER JOIN table1 t1 ON t1.col1=t2.col2 We are using Microsoft SQL server 2005.

• Why can't I pass in a uniqueidentifier/GUID to a stored procedure

It comes up with a box where I entered in the GUID. I copied and pasted it straight from my test database. I get this error. Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 5 Incorrect syntax near 'cac671b'. So why can't I sent in GUIDs? even ones that are copied right from the database and must be valid as they where allowed into the db.

• SQL Server Mapping a user to a login and adding roles programmatically

  In my SQL Server 2005 server I create databases and logins using Management Studio. My application requires that I give a newly created user read and write permissions to another database. To do this I right-click the newly created login, select properties and go to User Mapping. I put a check beside the database to map this login to the db and select db_datareader and db_datawriter as the roles to map. Can this be done programmatically? I've read about using Alter User and sp_change_users_login but I'm having problems getting these to work, since sp_change_users_login has been deprecated so I'd prefer to use Alter User. Please note my understanding of SQL Server database users/logins/roles is basic

• Truncating a table referenced by a foreign key

  Hey, We have two tables in a SQL Server 2005 database, A and B.There is a service which truncates table A every day. Recently, a foreign key constraint was added to table B, referencing table A. As a result, it isn't possible truncating table A anymore, even if table B is empty. Is there any workaround to get the same result as truncating table A? I've already tried the approach below but the identity wasn't reset. DBCC CHECKIDENT (TABLENAME, RESEED, 0) PS. before anyone points this as a duplicate, the different thing here is that I'm not allowed to drop constraints, nor creating any.

• Multiple column foreign key contraints

  I want to setup table constraints for the following scenario and I’m not sure how to do it or if it’s even possible in SQL Server 2005. I have three tables A,B,C. C is a child of B. B will have a optional foreign key(may be null) referencing A. For performance reasons I also want table C to have the same foreign key reference to table A. The constraint on table C should be that C must reference its parent (B) and also have the same foreign key reference to A as its parent. Anyone have any thoughts on how to do this?

  Greetings, I have a problem as follows: I have an SQL variable declared: DECLARE @myVariable nvarchar(max) a third party library set a value for this variable. To simplify, lets say that the value is as follows: SET @myVariable = 'Select ROWGUID from MySampleTable' Now, I want to execute the following query: SELECT ROWGUID FROM myTable WHERE ROWGUID in (exec sp_executesql @myVariable ) However, the above statement does not work because it returns an error telling me that I can't execute stored procedure in that way. I made a workaround and this is what I wrote: create table #temptable (ID uniqueidentifier null) if(@myVariable is not null AND @myVariable !='') insert into #temptable exec sp_executesql @myVariable SELECT ROWGUID FROM myTable WHERE ROWGUID in (select * from #temptable) DROP TABLE #temptable This works fine.However I don't think it is a good idea to use temporary table. • How to write a CASE WHEN statement with multiple DATEDIFF variables

  I need to calculate the difference between two dates (facility_start_date, facility_end_date) for a report in Reporting Services in SQL 2005. If the facility_end_date is null then it needs to use the report parameter @EndDate in the calculation. However if the facility_end_date is greater than the parameter @EndDate, then it also needs to use the paramenter @EndDate. The code below works fine except that if the facility_end_date is greater than the parameter @EndDate it is still calculating between the facility_start_date and facility_end_date, rather than between the facility_start_date and @EndDate. Any help would be appreciated. • Unable to Connect to Management Studio Server

  I have a nasty situation. I am using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express edition locally on my pc for testing, and once tested I upload database changes to a remote server. I have a situation where I deleted the Default Database on my local machine, and instead of searching hard enough to find an answer to that problem, I uninstalled and reinstalled Management Studio. Since then Management Studio has not been able to connect to the server. Is there any help (or hope for me for that matter), out there????? • SSIS DTS Package flat file error - "The file name specified in the connection was not valid"

  I have a pretty basic SSIS package that is attempting to read a file hosted on a share, and import its contents to a database table. The package runs fine when I run it manually within SSIS. However, when I set up a SQL Agent job and attempt to execute it, I get the following error: Executed as user: DOMAIN\UserName. End Error Error: 2010-05-03 10:14:17.75 Code: 0xC001401D Source: DataAnimalImport Description: Connection "Data File Local" failed validation. End Error DTExec: The package execution returned DTSER_FAILURE (1). Started: 10:14:17 AM Finished: 10:14:17 AM Elapsed: 0.594 seconds. The package execution failed. The step failed. This leads me to believe it's a permissions issue, but every attempt I've made to fix it has failed. What I've tried so far: Run as the SQL Agent account (DOMAIN\SqlAgent) - yields same error. DOMAIN\SqlAgent has "Full Control" permissions on both the share and the uploaded file. Set up a proxy account with a different account's credentials (DOMAIN\Account) - yields same error. Like above, "Full Control" permissions were given over the share to that account. Gave "Everyone" full control permissions over the share (temporarily!). Yielded same error. Manually copied the file to a local path and tested with the SQL Agent account. Worked properly. Added an ActiveX script task that would first copy the remotely hosted file to a local path, and then have the DTS package reference the local file. Gave a completely nondescriptive (even by SSIS standards) error when trying to run the script. Set up a proxy account, using my own personal account's credentials - worked correctly. However, this is not an acceptable solution as there are password policies in place on my account, as well as being a bad practice to set things up this way in general. Any ideas? I'm still convinced it's a permissions issue. However, what I've read from various searches more or less says giving the executing account permissions on the share should work. However, this is not the case here (unless I'm missing something obscure when I'm setting up permissions on the share).

• Query Results Not Expected

  I've been a CF developer for 15 years and I've never run into anything this strange or frustrating. I've pulled my hair out for hours, googled, abstracted, simplified, prayed and done it all in reverse. Can you help me? A cffunction takes one string argument and from that string I build an array of "phrases" to run a query with, attempting to match a location name in my database. For example, the string "the republic of boulder" would produce the array: ["the","republic","of","boulder","the republic","the republic of","the republic of boulder","republic of","republic of boulder","of boulder"]. Another cffunction uses the aforementioned cffunction and runs a cfquery. A query based on the previously given example would be... select locationid, locationname, locationaliasname from vwLocationsWithAlias where LocationName in ('the','the republic','the republic of','republic','republic of','republic of boulder','of','of boulder','boulder') or LocationAliasName in ('the','the republic','the republic of','republic','republic of','republic of boulder','of','of boulder','boulder') This returns 2 records... locationid - locationname - locationalias 99 - 'Boulder' - 'the republic' 68 - 'Boulder' - NULL This is good. Works fine and dandy. HOWEVER... if the string is changed to "the republic", resulting in the phrases array ["the","republic","the republic"] which is then used to produce the query... select locationid, locationname, locationaliasname from vwLocationsWithAlias where LocationName in ('the','the republic','republic') or LocationAliasName in ('the','the republic','republic') This returns 0 records. Say what?! OK, just to make sure I'm not involuntarily HIGH I run that very same query in my SQL console against the same database in the cf datasource. 1 RECORD! locationid - locationname - locationalias 99 - 'Boulder' - 'the republic' I can even hard-code that sql within the same cffunction and get that one result, but never from the dynamically generated SQL. I can get my location phrases from another cffunction of a different name that returns hard-coded array values and those work, but never if the array is dynamically built. I've tried removing cfqueryparams, triple-checking my datatypes, datasource setups, etc., etc., etc. NO DICE WTF!? Is this an obscure bug? Am I losing my mind? I've tried everything I can think of and others (including Ray Camden) can think of. ColdFusion 8 (with all the latest hotfixes) SQL Server 2005 (with all the greatest service packs) Windows 2003 Server (with all the latest updates, service packs and nightly MS voodoo)

• How views are changing in future versions of SQL

  April is here, and this weekend, SQL v11.0 (previous known as Denali, now known as SQL Server 2012) reaches general availability. And so I thought I’d share some news about what’s coming next. I didn’t hear this at the MVP Summit earlier this year (where there was lots of NDA information given, but I didn’t go), so I think I’m free to share it. I’ve written before about CTEs being query-scoped views. Well, the actual story goes a bit further, and will continue to develop in future versions. A CTE is a like a “temporary temporary view”, scoped to a single query. Due to globally-scoped temporary objects using a two-hashes naming style, and session-scoped (or ‘local’) temporary objects a one-hash naming style, this query-scoped temporary object uses a cunning zero-hash naming style. We see this implied in Books Online in the CREATE TABLE page, but as we know, temporary views are not yet supported in the SQL Server. However, in a breakaway from ANSI-SQL, Microsoft is moving towards consistency with their naming. We know that a CTE is a “common table expression” – this is proving to be a more strategic than you may have appreciated. Within the Microsoft product group, the term “Table Expression” is far more widely used than just CTEs. Anything that can be used in a FROM clause is referred to as a Table Expression, so long as it doesn’t actually store data (which would make it a Table, rather than a Table Expression). You can see this is not just restricted to the product group by doing an internet search for how the term is used without ‘common’. In the past, Books Online has referred to a view as a “virtual table” (but notice that there is no SQL 2012 version of this page). However, it was generally decided that “virtual table” was a poor name because it wasn’t completely accurate, and it’s typically accepted that virtualisation and SQL is frowned upon. That page I linked to says “or stored query”, which is slightly better, but when the SQL 2012 version of that page is actually published, the line will be changed to read: “A view is a stored table expression (STE)”. This change will be the first of many. During the SQL 2012 R2 release, the keyword VIEW will become deprecated (this will be SQL v11 SP1.5). Three versions later, in SQL 14.5, you will need to be in compatibility mode 140 to allow “CREATE VIEW” to work. Also consistent with Microsoft’s deprecation policy, the execution of any query that refers to an object created as a view (rather than the new “CREATE STE”), will cause a Deprecation Event to fire. This will all be in preparation for the introduction of Single-Column Table Expressions (to be introduced in SQL 17.3 SP6) which will finally shut up those people waiting for a decent implementation of Inline Scalar Functions. And of course, CTEs are “Common” because the Table Expression definition needs to be repeated over and over throughout a stored procedure. ...or so I think I heard at some point.   I would like to set a password and username for connecting to a server with SQL Management Studio 2008. I set up SQL Server 2008 Express on a customer's computer to host a DB used by an Access 2007 app. The customer should not be able to access the DB or connect with SQL Management Studio. How do I set up a login and remove any logins that allow a user to connect via Windows Authentication and without entering a username and password? I have not much experience with logins and controlling access.

  When I try, I receive the following error message: A computer restart is required. You must restart this computer before installing SQL Server. Of course, I have restarted the computer :-) I'm not really sure how to proceed. The version that sql server reports when I query it is: SQL Server 10.0.1600.22 - RTM (Express Edition with Advanced ) Solved: As it turns out, I had to end up uninstalling logitech's quick cam pro software. Although the fix below did not directly resolve it, the value of that registry key led me to discovering the solution by querying for it online :-) thanks!!!

  When I alter or create a stored procedure directly on production or QA database, after a few seconds I start experience timeouts and application becomes unavailable. Log files shows this error: SQL Server has encountered 3 occurrence(s) of I/O requests taking longer than 15 seconds to complete on file [C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\QA_Database.ldf] in database [QA_Database] (9). The OS file handle is 0x0000000000000568. The offset of the latest long I/O is: 0x0000002821a200 We have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed, including latest Service Pack. Production and staging environments are completely separated. I tried to reproduce it on QA, but to no avail. I have no clue what it could be. Appreciate your help.

• Windows Server Configuration with Exchange, SQL Express and IIS

  In our small office we are currently running a standalone tower server with WS 2008 R2, SQL Express and IIS. This server is going to be decommissioned and scrapped as its old and very noisy. We are going to purchase a new server with WS 2012 Standard and a heap of ram. It will still be a standalone server so it will be a domain controller, have SQL Express and IIS installed. We intend to install the hyper-v role and host a second virtual server to distribute the load. We are a small company and have only 15 staff members so its not a huge load on the server. Can a single server handle this type of installation, we don't want to purchase two servers. If so how should it be configured with regard to which software packages should be virtualized(if any). Redundancy is not a huge issue for us.

• cannot add a user to sysadmin role in SQL Server

  I am using SQL Server 2008 Management Studio. The current logon account belongs to machine local administrator group. I am using Windows Integrated Security mode in SQL Server 2008. My issue is, after log into SQL Server Management Studio, I select my login name under Security/Logins, then select Server Roles Tab, then select the last item -- sysadmin to make myself belong to this group/role, but it says I do not have enough permission. Any ideas what is wrong? I think local administrator should be able to do anything. :-)

• Sql server 2000 replication error

  Good morning, I have a sql server 2000 machine, with SP4. I have a transactional replication. A keep receving this error message: The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'servername' the logreader stops responding.When i click start it starts fine, and the replication starts fine.And then, works for hours, and the problem comes back. In the begining i though it could be timeouts, but i already set a couple of parameters in the logreader profile,like querytimeout/readbatchsize. Sometimes when the logreader stops,it generates a dump, but not always. In event viewer, it appears this message: 17066 : SQL Server Assertion: File: , line=1985 Failed Assertion = 'startLSN = m_curLSN'. 18052 : Error: 3624, Severity: 20, State: 1. 17066 : SQL Server Assertion: File: , line=2223 Failed Assertion = 'm_noOfScAlloc == 0'. • How to rename database without first stopping SQL instance to flush connections

  Is there a way to force a database into single user mode so a script can be run to rename databases? I find I have to Restart the instance of SQL (to force off any connections from a web app, etc.) and then I can run this script: USE master go sp_dboption MDS, "single user", true go sp_dboption StagingMDS, "single user", true go sp_renamedb MDS, LastMonthMDS go sp_renamedb StagingMDS, MDS go sp_dboption LastMonthMDS, "single user", false go sp_dboption MDS, "single user", false go After this script runs, I can restart IIS for my web app and it can connect to the new production database. All the above works well and we've been doing this for years but now we've upgraded to SQL 2008 and the SQL2008 instance also hosts other databases that support other web apps. So, rather than using a Restart of the whole SQL instance to enable subsequent single-user mode on 2 databases, is there a less intrusive way of accomplishing this? Thanks.

  When I run the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express installer (32-bit or 64-bit), nothing happens. It will get to the screen where it asks me to accept the terms of license and send anonymous feedback; I check off both boxes and click Next, and it automatically starts installing the Support Files. And then the window disappears. I tried looking through the log files, but didn't see any errors. I've tried: x64 SQL Server R2 express x86 SQL Server R2 express X64 SQL Server R2 (full) X64 SQL Server Management Studio Of these, only management studio installed correctly; the two express editions failed silently, and the full version gave me different errors. • Can't login to SQL Server after moving machine to different office/domain

  Our company has just been bought and the over the weekend I have brought up the last few machines to plug into their network (they are under a different Windows Domain). The last machine is our Vault system and the SQL Server was using Windows Authentication. I have plugged it into their network and its working fine, but i cannot connect to SQL Server with Management Studio and, I fear, no backup jobs will also be working. When I try to login under Windows Auth, it has the user name of "NEWDOMAIN\Administrator" (greyed out) and then presents a "login failed" message with error code "18456". Can anyone help me with this, or will I just have to reinstall SQL Server, Vault and restore the backup I took before the move?
