  • Windows 7, "Pin to Taskbar" for all users.

    - by Archit Baweja
In windows XP, you can add a shortcut to the start menu or desktop for all users by copying/moving the shortcut to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users[Desktop|Start Menu] I know same is the case in Windows 7 with a slightly different path (C:\Users\Public). However I'm still trying to find out how to add a 'shortcut' for all users. There is no C:\Users\Public\Taskbar. Any ideas? Or is it just not available as a feature?

  • How to make IE 9 stop reading all the fonts every time?

    - by Mehrdad
Process Monitor showed me that IE 9 accesses every time it loads on my system, which makes it have a 1- to 2-second delay every time it loads. (I tested this by removing my fonts -- it loaded much more quickly.) It gets a little annoying, because it's the best handler I have for MHT files, so I don't want to switch to something else. Is there any way to make it avoid doing that? (The "Hide Fonts" feature in Windows 7 doesn't work.)

  • Is ECC mandatory in SSD technology?

    - by Alexander Shcheblikin
While shopping for an SSD I have noticed that some manufacturers promote their "Pro" models as the ones sporting ECC data protection. Those manufacturers do not mention ECC in their budget models descriptions. However, Wikipedia article on flash memory states that "NAND relies on ECC to compensate for bits that may spontaneously fail during normal device operation." So the question is does any SSD device use ECC behind the scenes for its normal operation and is that ECC "feature" just a marketing ploy?

  • How to stop computer waking up from sleep when LAN connected.

    - by jmatthias
I have a Compaq desktop machine that wakes up from sleep only when the LAN cable is connected to it. The WOL feature is DISABLED in the BIOS, so why does it keep waking up? And why is it getting told to wake up? I was under the impression that an application or service has to specifically send a message to the machine in order to wake it up but I am not aware of any software on my network that would do this.

  • Windows 2008 R2 large file copy causes Hyper-V Manager to stop responding

    - by maryeileen
I'm using the EXPORT feature in Hyper-V to move a large Virtual Machine (VM) over a 1GB network from a Windows 2008 to a Windows 2008 R2 box (200GB) and its so intense that I get the following icon on my destination Hyper-V manager: Is this expected? Is there another way to get large file across the network and minimize this intense I/O effect? Anyones else ever seen that Do Not Enter sign? The other VMs are functional but slow, but I'm guessing that is expected.

  • Live screen annotation?

    - by TreyK
Hey all, I'm in need of some software that will allow me to make annotations on the screen to ease the frustration of using a piece of low-quality software to verify some data. I've tried a few programs out, but so far none of them have one essential feature: I must be able to switch between the annotation software and the program without losing the annotations that I've previously made. Every program so far has cleared my annotations when I switch out and then back in to it. Running Windows XP. Thanks for any help,

  • Windows 7 Aero Theme when on Battery

    - by Dan Revell
Windows 7 has the full and basic aero themes that can be changed inside personalization. Windows used to automatically disable Windows Aero (transparency) when I unplug my laptop from the mains. I reset the theme and now it doesn't do this anymore. I can't seem to find how to enable this again. I've checked the advanced power options and control panel but turning back on this feature is eluding me. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  • Ram cache on Windows Server 2008

    - by Jonas Lincoln
Scenario: We have a file cluster on a UNC share. A couple of IIS web servers serve files from this UNC share. This is done through a IIS-module, and this module does not use the built-in IIS-caching feature. We'd like to cache the files from the UNC share in a ram disk. So far, we've found this product: http://www.superspeed.com/servers/supercache.php Are there other products that can help us cache the files from the UNC-share in ram?

So I end up typing the 10 digit conference code using the keyboard but then I have to use my mouse to push the # or hash sign. Is their a way to push the # with the keyboard?

  • MediaWiki alternatives for small business?

    - by Jakobud
Are there any good alternative wiki's to MediaWiki out there for a small business? Mostly we are just wanting to use it for documentation. MediaWiki is a fine (and slightly outdated) piece of software, but it doesn't even officially support basic things like controlling who has access to what page/article, which is an important feature for us.

  • Is there a way to make nautilus display the "recently used" files and directories?

    - by Peltier
Is there a way to make nautilus display the "recently used" files and directories, just like the "open file" dialog does? Just to make my question clearer, here are two screenshots: The GTK open file dialog, showing the recently used items: A nautilus window, which doesn't offer to display recently used items: EDIT : This has been added as a feature request to Nautilus. Don't hesitate to make your voice heard if you want it to happen!
