• Using Nemerle in asp.net App_Code directory

  I want to use Nemerle in an ASP.NET application. Specifically, putting .n files into App_Code. • C# IsolatedStorage Not Working

  I am building a C# .NET (VS2010) IE8 add-on application but am having some trouble saving data using IsolatedStorage. No exceptions occur but, after writing the data, when I try to read the contents back it is blank, and I can find no evidence that it actually saved. • Unit Testing using InternalsVisibleToAttribute requires compiling with /out:filename.ext?

  In my most recent question: Unit Testing Best Practice? / C# InternalsVisibleTo() attribute for VBNET 2.0 while testing?, I was asking about InternalsVisibleToAttribute. I have read the documentation on how to use it, and everything is fine and understood. However, I can't instantiate my class Groupe from my Testing project. I want to be able to instantiate my internal class in my wrapper assembly, from my testing assembly. Any help is appreciated!   I am trying to connect to a remote sql database and simply run the "select @@servername" query in Powershell. I'm trying to do this without using integrated security. I've been struggling with "get-credential" and "invoke-sqlcmd", only to find (I think), that you can't pass the password from "get-credential" to another Powershell cmdlets. • Converting From Castle Windsor To StructureMap In An MVC2 Project

  I am learning about best practices in MVC2 and I am knocking off a copy of the "Who Can Help Me" project (http://whocanhelpme.codeplex.com/) off Codeplex. In it, they use Castle Windsor for their DI container. One "learning" task I am trying to do is convert this subsystem in this project to use StructureMap. Basically, at Application_Start(), the code news up a Windsor container. • Response.Redirect in a COM+ Object Called from Classic ASP Page

  Basically we moved from IIS 5 to IIS 7 and I am trying to update some of our old COM objects to .NET by rewriting them in C#. What I am have so far is a Classic ASP page calling the COM+ object and then I am trying to do a simple redirect within the COM+ object (this is just for testing purposes, it's not what the object will do eventually). My problem/question is, why does the redirect call not work properly? Am I doing something wrong or can you not redirect within a COM+ object? All that happens is a blank white page comes up and if I check the IIS logs, I see no errors. • MSTest on x64 C++/CLI

  I got a problem using MSTest on x64: The test project depends on a couple of C++/CLI assemblies, and fails to load for some reason. In Visual Studio, I get (stripped down): Error loading D:\xxx\Xxx.Test.dll: Unable to load the test container 'D:\xxx\Xxx.Test.dll' or one of its dependencies. Error details: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'Common.Geometry.Native, Version=1.1.4574.22395, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. Running MSTest manually in a command prompt, I get: Unable to load the test container 'D:\xxx\Xxx.Test.dll' or one of its dependencies. Error details: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Common.Geometry.Native, Version=1.1.4574.22395, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Details worth mentioning: The test project itself is compiled using 'Any Cpu'. I use a x64 specific testrunconfig Dependency walker shows no missing native dependencies in the C++/CLI assembly (Common.Geometry.Native) Even more interesting, there is another test project in the same solution using the same C++/CLI assembly (Common.Geometry.Native), and it runs without any problems. I have also verified that there are no 32bit assemblies/dlls interfering. Any suggestions is welcome !

When PartCreationPolicy is missing, I get following exception: A single instance of controller 'MvcApplication4.Areas.Articles.Controllers.HomeController' cannot be used to handle multiple requests. If a custom controller factory is in use, make sure that it creates a new instance of the controller for each request.

• Generate an ID via COM interop

  At the moment, we've got an unmaintanable ball of code which offers an interface to a third party application. The third party application has a COM assembly which MUST be used to create new entries. This process involves two steps: generate a new object (basically an ID), and update that object with new field values. Because COM interop is so slow, we only use that to generate the ID (and related objects) in the database. The actual update is done using a regular SQL query. What I am trying to figure out if it's possible to use NHibernate to do some of the heavy lifting for us, without bypassing the COM assembly. Here's the code for saving something to the database as I envision it: using(var s = sessionFactory.OpenSession()) using(var t = s.BeginTransaction()) { MyEntity entity = new MyEntity(); s.Save(entity); t.Commit(); } Regular NH code I'd say. Now, this is where it gets tricky. I think I have to supply my own implementation of NHibernate.Id.IIdentifierGenerator which calls the COM assembly in the Generate method. That's not a problem. What IS a problem is that the COM assembly requires initialisation, which does take a bit of time. It also doesn't like multiple instances in the same process, for some reason. What I would like to know is if there's a way to properly access an external service in the generator code. I'm free to use any technique I want, so if it involves something like an IoC container that's no problem. The thing I am looking for is where exactly to hook-up my code so I can access the things I need in my generator, without having to resort to using singletons or other nasty stuff.

• Architecture for new ASP.NET web application

  I'm maintaining an application which currently is just a web service (built with WCF) and a database backend. The web service is built in layers with a linq-to-sql data access part with core functionality in an own assembly and on top of that the web service assembly which contains the WCF code. The core assembly also handles all business logic rules (very few actually). The customer now wants a Web interface for the application instead of just accessing it through other applications which are consuming the web service. I'm quite lost on modern web application design, so I would like some advice on what architecture and frameworks to use for the web application. The web application will be using the same core assembly with business rules and the linq-to-sql data access layer as the web service. Some concepts I've thought about are: ASP.NET MVC Webforms AJAX controls - possibly leting the AJAX controls access the existing web service through JSON. Are there any more concepts I should look into? Which one is the best for a fresh project? The development tools are Visual Studio 2008 Team Edition for Developers targeting .NET 3.5. An upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 Premium (or maybe even Ultimate) is possible if it gives any benefits.

• Adding an ADO.NET Entity Data Model throws build errors

  I am using Visual Studio 2013 express. I create a new project and then I add a database to that project. But, when I add an ADO.NET Entity Framework model to that project and then run the program, I get the following four build errors listed below. To try to remedy this myself, I added the namespaces 'System.Data.Entity' and 'System.Data.Entity.Design', but that didn't help. Also, I uninstalled and re-installed the Nuget package. I also uninstalled and re-installed Visual Studio 2013 Express for Windows Desktop. But these measures didn't help the situation either. Please note that I used to use the Entity Data model just fine. But it was around the time that I did a system restore on my computer, and when I updated VS 2013 with an update offered on the start page, and finally, when I signed up for MS Azure, that I started running into the problem described above. Now I would think that uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio 2013, and then installing the 'Nuget' Package would solve all problems. What am I missing here? The errors mentioned above are: Error 1 The type or namespace name 'Infrastructure' does not exist in the namespace 'System.Data.Entity' (are you missing an assembly reference?) • C# internal VS VBNET Friend

  To this SO question: What is the C# equivalent of friend?, I would personally have answered "internal", just like Ja did among the answers! However, Jon Skeet says that there is no direct equivalence of VB Friend in C#. If Jon Skeet says so, I won't be the one telling otherwise! ;P I'm wondering how can the keyword internal (C#) not be the equivalent of Friend (VBNET) when their respective definitions are: Friend VBNET The Friend (Visual Basic) keyword in the declaration statement specifies that the elements can be accessed from within the same assembly, but not from outside the assembly. [...] internal C# Internal: Access is limited to the current assembly. To my understanding, these definitions mean quite the same to me. Then, respectively, when I'm coding in VB.NET, I use the Friend keyword to specify that a class or a property shall be accessible only within the assembly where it is declared. The same in C#, I use the internal keyword to specify the same. Am I doing something or anything wrong from this perspective? What are the refinements I don't get? Might someone please explain how or in what Friend and internal are not direct equivalences? Thanks in advance for any of your answers!

I've started out separating the VMs into a separate component/assembly, partly because I see them as the unit testable part, partly because views should rely on VM, not the other way round. But when I then need to bring up a window, the window is not known by the VM. All introductions I find place the VM in the WPF/App component, thus eliminating the problem. • IIS 6+ASP.NET - many temp files generated

  I have a ASP.NET + some .NET web-services running on IIS 6 (win 2003 server). The issue is that IIS is generating a lot (!) of files in "c:\WINDOWS\Temp" directory. a lot of files means thousands of files, which get to more than 3G of size so far. • What is the MSBuild equivalent to ant's -project-help?

  I come from an ant background, and I'm starting to use msbuild. I want to create a .proj file with targets for clean, compile, deploy, etc. In ant, I would expect my user to run ant -project-help to get a list of the targets with their descriptions. There doesn't appear to be anything like this with msbuild, so I was thinking of setting DefaultTargets to "Help" and adding this target: <Target Name="Help"> <Message Text="/t:Clean - Remove all bin folders and generated files"/> <Message Text="/t:Compile - Generate assembly"/> <Message Text="/t:Deploy - Install the assembly"/> </Target> When I run msbuild, I see this: Microsoft (R) Build Engine Version 3.5.30729.1 [Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0.50727.3053] Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation 2007. • ItemUpdating called twice after ItemAdded in event receiver

  I've created an event receiver to handle the ItemAdded and ItemUpdating events on a document library in SharePoint 2010. I've encountered a problem where when I add a document to the library (e.g. by saving it back from Word) the ItemAdded method is correctly called however this is then followed by two calls to ItemUpdating. I have removed all code from my handlers to ensure that it's not something I'm doing inside that is causing the problem. • vb.net project template how can I leave the root namesapce empty

  I have been tinkering with the VS 2010 template. So far I am able to create a vb.net class library project from my template. However, one small thing is bugging me. In my project template the default assembly name is the same as the default file name. I have left the root namespace empty. But when I create a new project from the template, VS 2010 automatically fills the root namespace with the same name as my assembly name. My template project (vbproj) for the assembly name and root namespace looks like this: <AssemblyName>$safeprojectname$</AssemblyName> <!-- RootNameSpace should always be empty. --> <RootNamespace></RootNamespace> But as said, when I leave this empty it is always overwritten with the assembly name. Even if I create a custom parameter with an empty string as value to replace the root namespace, it is still overridden. Any help is appreciated.

• SQL SERVER – Create a Very First Report with the Report Wizard

In today’s world automation is all around you. Henry Ford began building his Model T automobiles on a moving assembly line a century ago and changed the world. The moving assembly line allowed Ford to build identical cars quickly and cheaply. Henry Ford said in his autobiography “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black.” Today you can buy a car straight from the factory with your choice of several colors and with many options like back up cameras, built-in navigation systems and heated leather seats. The assembly lines now use robots to perform some tasks along with human workers. When you order your new car, if you want something special, not offered by the manufacturer, you will have to find a way to add it later. In computer software, we also have “assembly lines” called wizards. A wizard will ask you a series of questions, often branching to specific questions based on earlier answers, until you get to the end of the wizard. These wizards are used for many things, from something simple like setting up a rule in Outlook to performing administrative tasks on a server. Often, a wizard will get you part of the way to the end result, enough to get much of the tedious work out of the way. Once you get the product from the wizard, if the wizard is not capable of doing something you need, you can tweak the results. Create a Report with the Report Wizard Let’s get started with your first report!  Launch SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) from the Start menu under SQL Server 2012. Once SSDT is running, click New Project to launch the New Project dialog box. On the left side of the screen expand Business Intelligence and select Reporting Services. Configure the properties as shown in . Be sure to select Report Server Project Wizard as the type of report and to save the project in the C:\Joes2Pros\SSRSCompanionFiles\Chapter3\Project folder. Click OK and wait for the Report Wizard to launch. Click Next on the Welcome screen.  On the Select the Data Source screen, make sure that New data source is selected. Type JProCo as the data source name. Make sure that Microsoft SQL Server is selected in the Type dropdown. Click Edit to configure the connection string on the Connection Properties dialog box. If your SQL Server database server is installed on your local computer, type in localhost for the Server name and select the JProCo database from the Select or enter a database name dropdown. Click OK to dismiss the Connection Properties dialog box. Check Make this a shared data source and click Next. On the Design the Query screen, you can use the query builder to build a query if you wish. Since this post is not meant to teach you T-SQL queries, you will copy all queries from files that have been provided for you. In the C:\Joes2Pros\SSRSCompanionFiles\Chapter3\Resources folder open the sales by employee.sql file. Copy and paste the code from the file into the Query string Text Box. Click Next. On the Select the Report Type screen, choose Tabular and click Next. On the Design the Table screen, you have to figure out the groupings of the report. How do you do this? Well, you often need to know a bit about the data and report requirements. I often draw the report out on paper first to help me determine the groups. In the case of this report, I could group the data several ways. Do I want to see the data grouped by Year and Month? Do I want to see the data grouped by Employee or Category? The only thing I know for sure about this ahead of time is that the TotalSales goes in the Details section. Let’s assume that the CIO asked to see the data grouped first by Year and Month, then by Category. Let’s move the fields to the right-hand side. This is done by selecting Page > Group or Details >, as shown in, and click Next. On the Choose the Table Layout screen, select Stepped and check Include subtotals and Enable drilldown, as shown in. On the Choose the Style screen, choose any color scheme you wish (unlike the Model T) and click Next. I chose the default, Slate. On the Choose the Deployment Location screen, change the Deployment folder to Chapter 3 and click Next. At the Completing the Wizard screen, name your report Employee Sales and click Finish. After clicking Finish, the report and a shared data source will appear in the Solution Explorer and the report will also be visible in Design view. Click the Preview tab at the top. This report expects the user to supply a year which the report will then use as a filter. Type in a year between 2006 and 2013 and click View Report. Click the plus sign next to the Sales Year to expand the report to see the months, then expand again to see the categories and finally the details. You now have the assembly line report completed, and you probably already have some ideas on how to improve the report.   I'm trying to set up Jenkins in Tomcat7 on Ubuntu. I installed Tomcat7 and deployed jenkins.war, and I now see the Jenkins home page at http://myhost:8080/jenkins, but it's attempting to create the Jenkins directory at /usr/share/tomcat7/.jenkins, which it can't for security reasons. I've already created /srv/jenkins and given the tomcat7 group permissions, and want to set JENKINS_HOME to that path. I've tried adding it to the tomcat configuration in /etc/tomcat7/server.xml: <GlobalNamingResources> <Environment name="JENKINS_HOME" value="/srv/jenkins" type="java.lang.String" override="false"/> <!-- Default settings --> And I've also tried adding it to the automatically created context file in ROOT/META-INF/context.xml (there is no $CATALINA_HOME/conf as far as I can tell). <Context path="/" antiResourceLocking="false" > <Environment name="JENKINS_HOME" value="/srv/jenkins/" type="java.lang.String"/> </Context> But even after restarting tomcat7 I still get the same result (trying to use /usr/share/tomcat7/.jenkins).
