• Announcing MySQL Enterprise Backup 3.7.1

  The MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB) Team is pleased to announce the release of MEB 3.7.1, a maintenance release version that includes bug fixes and enhancements to some of the existing features. The most important feature introduced in this release is Automatic Incremental Backup. The new  argument syntax for the --incremental-base option is introduced which makes it simpler to perform automatic incremental backups. When the options --incremental & --incremental-base=history:last_backup are combined, the mysqlbackup command  uses the metadata in the mysql.backup_history table to determine the LSN to use as the lower limit of the incremental backup. You no longer need to keep track of the actual LSN (as in the option --start-lsn=LSN) or even the location of the previous backup (as in the option --incremental-base=dir:directory_path)This release also incudes various bug fixes related to some options used in MEB. The most important are few of them as listed below,1. The option --force now allows overwriting InnoDB data and log files in  combination with the apply-log and apply-incremental-backup options, and replacing the image file in combination with the backup-to-image and backup-dir-to-image options. 2. Resolved a bug that prevented MEB to interface with third-party storage managers to execute backup and restore jobs in combination with the SBT interface and associated --sbt* options for mysqlbackup. 3. • Checking if your SIMPLE databases need a log backup

  Hopefully you have read the blog by William Durkin explaining why your SIMPLE databases need a log backup in some cases. There is a SQL Server bug that means in some cases databases are marked as being in SIMPLE RECOVERY but have a log wait type that shows they are not properly configured. Please read his blog for the full explanation and a great description of how to reproduce the issue. As part of our (William happens to be my Boss) work to recover our affected databases I wrote this small PowerShell script to quickly check our servers for databases that needed the attention that William details.  cls $Servers = “Server01″,”Server02″,”etc”,”etc” foreach($Server in $Servers){ write-host “************” $server “****************”     $server = New-Object Microsoft.sqlserver.management.smo.server $Server     foreach($db in $Server.databases){         $db | where {$_.RecoveryModel -eq “Simple” -and $_.logreusewaitstatus -ne “nothing”} | select name, LogReuseWaitStatus     } } If you get any results from this query then you should consult Williams blog for the details on what action you should take. This script does give out false positives if in some circumstances depending on how busy your databases are. • Moving SharePoint 2010 to a new domain

  I have a small SharePoint 2010 farm (1 WFE / App Server & 1 SQL server) Our organisation is currently mirgrating to our holding company's global domain, so we now have a new local DC on site with trusts between the current domain and the new domain. I am going to need to move our SP Farm to the new domain and possibly rename servers to fit into the global naming convention (we are trying to avoid this at the moment, but might become a requirement) If there a way to script (stsadm / powershell) the user profiles and permission accross to the new domain? and on the server side, is it as simple as joining the servers to the new domain and updating all the service / farm accounts to accounts on new domain? I have googled this a bit, but everything I have found so far refers to MOSS 2007 or earlier. Any help / advise would be appreciated.

• Newbie worried about CASE tool.

  Hi there. I'm looking for some guidance on CASE tools and whether my concerns are valid. Recently I was in a meeting between my employer and an external software company which have a CASE tool currently in beta. They demonstrated this tool to us, showing how you build a UML model in Enterprise Architect (or something like it) and then, through their tool, that UML model is transformed into a Visual Studio project, with C# files, stored procedures for SQL Server, code for the data layer, WCF stuff, logging code and allsorts. Now, admittedly, I don't see the point in this, as in I'm not convinced it will save that much time (plus it feels like overkill). The tool authors said that a trial of the tool at another company had saved a team there 5 weeks of development time (from 6 weeks down to about 1 week) using this tool. I find the accuracy of that estimate hard to believe. My main concern is whether using this tool is going slow down my productivity. For example - Say I have a UML model which I built a VS solution from. Now, I want to rename a class method to something else; will this mean having to update the UML model first and then rebuilding the code? Is this how case tools normally work? Something I will need to check with the authors is the structure of the generated VS solution. I like the Domain Driven Design way of project structure - Infrstructure, Services, Model, etc. I doubt very much this tool will do that. Also, I've been playing around with Entity Framework Code First and think it's a great way to build the data model. I have nice repositories, unit of work classes and other design patterns that work well with EF. I have data anootations and stuff like that working great. By not having EF (the CASE tool uses it's own data layer code) I'm concerned that this tool's data layer code might not be a nice to integrate in the UoW pattern, repositories, etc. This I will need to verify when I get a closer look at the generated code. What are other people's experiences with CASE tools? Am I being paranoid about nothing? Am I being unfair - are my negativities unfounded? EDIT: I like to use TDD/BDD for building my code, and using a CASE tool looks like it will make this difficult. Again, any feedback on this would be great. Cheers. Jas.

• What is the most time-effective way to monitor & manage threats from bots and/or humans?

  I'm usually overwhelmed by the amount of tools that hosting companies provide to track & quantify traffic data and statistics. I'm equally overwhelmed by the countless flavors of malicious 'attacks' that target any and every web site known to man. The security methods used to protect both the back and front end of a website are documented well and are straight-forward in terms of ease of implementation and application, but the army of autonomous bots knows no boundaries and will always find a niche of a website to infest. So what can be done to handle the inevitable swarm of bots that pound your domain with brute force? Whenever I look at error logs for my domains, there are always thousands of entries that look like bots trying to sneak sql code into the database by tricking the variables in the url into giving them schema information or private data within the database. My barbaric and time-consuming plan of defense is just to monitor visitor statistics for those obvious patterns of abuse and either ban the ips or range of ips accordingly. Aside from that, I don't know much else I could do to prevent all of the ping pong going on all day. Are there any good tools that automatically monitor this background activity (specifically activity that throws errors on the web & db server) and proactively deal with these source(s) of mayhem?

• Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit Screen Frozen and Remote Desktop Freezes but Server Continues Working

  I've asked this question a couple of times but I don't seem to be getting any real answers. We have a SBS (Windows Server 2008 Rc) server and suddenly the screen has started freezing. Even when we go into the system via remote desktop it worked once or twice (since the problem started), but now the RDP screen freezes once it gets just past the Welcome screen. The server itself is running, SQL is working, Exchange is working, file share is fine. It's just the UI that isn't working. We've tried hard resetting and that works for a short while before the problem comes back. Where do we begin to resolve this issue? Thanks, Jacques

Then I just download backup files and delete them. After deletion Munin's memory graph returns cache and buffers to the state that was before backup. • Database which only holds indexes and last X records in memory?

  I'm looking for a data store that is very memory efficient while still allowing many object changes per second and disregarding ACID compliance for the last X records. I need this database for a server with not much memory and I can make a key-value store, document, or SQL database work. The idea is that indexes/keys are the only thing I need in memory and all the actual values/objects/rows can be saved on disk do to the low read rate (I just want index/key lookup to be fast). I also don't want records constantly being flushed to disk, so I would like the last X number of records to be held in memory so that 100 or so of them can all be written at once. I don't care if I lose the last 10 seconds worth of objects/values. I do care if the database as a whole is in danger of becoming corrupt. Is there a data-store like this?

• Attach to Process in Visual Studio

  One option for achieving step 1 in the Live Debugging process is attaching to an already running instance of the process that hosts your code, and this is a good place for me to talk about debug engines. You can attach to a process by selecting the "Debug" menu and then the "Attach To Process…" menu in Visual Studio 11 (Ctrl+Alt+P with my keyboard bindings), and you should see something like this screenshot: I am not going to explain this UI, besides being fairly intuitive, there is good documentation on MSDN for the Attach dialog. I do want to focus on the row of controls that starts with the "Attach to:" label and ends with the "Select..." button. Between them is the readonly textbox that indicates the debug engine that will be used for the selected process if you click the "Attach" button. If you haven't encountered that term before, read on MSDN about debug engines. Notice that the "Type" column shows the Code Type(s) that can be detected for the process. Typically each debug engine knows how to debug a specific code type (the two terms tend to be used interchangeably). If you click on a different process in the list with a different code type, the debug engine used will be different. However note that this is the automatic behavior. If you believe you know best, or more typically you want to choose the debug engine for a process using more than one code type, you can do so by clicking the "Select..." button, which should yield a "Select Code Type" dialog like this one: In this dialog you can switch to the debug engine you want to use by checking the box in front of your desired one, then hit "OK", then hit "Attach" to use it. Notice that the dialog suggests that you can select more than one. Not all combinations work (you'll get an error if you select two incompatible debug engines), but some do. Also notice in the list of debug engines one of the new players in Visual Studio 11, the GPU debug engine - I will be covering that on the C++ AMP team blog (and no, it cannot be combined with any others in this release). • Stop Office 2010 Upload Center Icon from Displaying in the Taskbar

  One of the new features in Office 2010 is the ability to upload your files to Office Web Apps. When you do, an Upload Center icon appears in the Taskbar and helps manage documents. Here’s how to stop it from showing up. If you’re running Office 2010 and upload files to the web, you’ll notice the Microsoft Office Upload Center Icon appears on the Taskbar in the Notification Area. It will stay there even after you’re done uploading the document and closed out of all Office apps. You can use this to monitor and control the documents you’re uploading to the web. Getting rid of it is fairly simple. Right-click the icon and select Settings. When the Microsoft Office Upload Center Settings window appears, under Display Options, uncheck Display icon in notification area and click OK. That is all there is to it…now it will no longer appear in the Taskbar.   After you upload your first document, it will also want to startup with Windows. You can go into msconfig and disable it from automatically starting up. If you need to access it again, it’s part of  Office 2010 Tools which you can access from the Start Menu. Or you can type upload center into the Search box in the Start Menu and hit Enter. If you upload a lot of work to Microsoft Web Apps you might find this tool useful, but if you only occasionally upload docs, you might be annoyed by it always being in the Taskbar. • Light-weight, free, database query tool for Windows?

  My question is very similar to the one here except pertaining to a Windows tool. I am also referencing this table and what I found here with a Google search. However, I have no idea which tool would best meet my (very basic) purposes. I am currently using Excel with a basic ODBC connection string to query my database at work. However, Excel is pretty memory-heavy and a basic query tends to throw my computer into a 30 second stall-a-thon. Is there a free tool out there that is light-weight and can serve the same purpose when provided an ODBC connection and a SQL query? Also would prefer that it easily copies over to a spreadsheet as needed.

I'm looking to scan my code for potential risks of SQL Injection, XSS, etc. I've gone through most of my code manually, but with a few hundred thousand lines of code, I'm sure I missed things. If possible, are there any tools that can be downloaded and analyze code on my local machine rather than installing to the live server (this isn't a requirement if not)?

However, for the most correct (if somewhat dry and factual) information, you can go directly to the source.  Major Releases  For every major release, the MySQL docs team creates and maintains a "nutshell" page containing the significant changes in that release. For the current GA release (whatever that is) you'll find it at this location: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/mysql-nutshell.html  At the moment, this redirects to the summary notes for MySQL 5.6. Each linked page shows the changes in that particular version, so if you are currently running 5.6.11 and are interested in what bugs were fixed in versions since then, you can look at each subsequent release and see all changes in glorious detail. One really clever thing you can do with that site is do an advanced Google search to find exactly when a feature was released, and find out its release notes. By using the preceding link in a "site:" directive in Google, you can search only within those pages for an entry. • SBS 2003 crashes often due to limited memory

  I have a Windows SBS 2003 Std that regularly crashes, in about every 20th day. The only thing I can see in the logs is that used memory increases with about 30MB/day. The process that uses more and more memory is sqlservr. We don't have much installed on the server; a Point-Of-Sale-system that uses Pervasive SQL as database and an Accounting application. We just have 2GB of RAM and I could upgrade to 4GB but I think that this just delay the problem. Is there any solution to this problem? Could I limit sqlservr to some memory?

  With almost every patch or release upgrade of the Oracle Database a new version of Oracle Application Express (APEX) will be installed. And as APEX is part of the database installation it will be upgraded as part of the component upgrades after the ORACLE SERVER component has been successfully upgraded to the new releases. But the APEX upgrade can take a bit (several minutes or even more in some cases). Therefore it is a common advice to upgrade APEX upfront before upgrading the database as this can be done online while the database is in production (unless your databases serves just as an APEX application backend - in this case upgrading APEX upfront won't save you anything). To upgrade Oracle APEX upfront you'll have to followMOS Note:1088970.1. • silent failure while creating odbc data source

  I just got really confused trying to create an ODBC data source in Windows 2003 R2. I can create a connection to my chosen server (a MS SQL Server) on the "user DSN" tab, but when I try to do the same thing on the "system DSN tab", the process fails but without an error message. I am able to connect to the target database fine at the end of configuring a new data source, but when I click OK, the data source just isn't there. No error message, no sign that anything went amiss, other than the lack of a new data source. Very annoying, as I had to repeat the process a few times to make sure I wasn't crazy. Anybody got any hints? I suspect it is a permission problem of some sort but since there is no error message, I don't know where to start.
