  • How can I get a iterable resultset from the database using pdo, instead of a large array?

    I'm using PDO inside a database abstraction library function query. I'm using fetchAll(), which if you have a lot of results, can get memory intensive, so I want to provide an argument to toggle between a fetchAll associative array and a pdo result set that can be iterated over with foreach and requires less memory (somehow). I remember hearing about this, and I searched the PDO docs, but I couldn't find any useful way to do that. Does anyone know how to get an iterable resultset back from PDO instead of just a flat array? And am I right that using an iterable resultset will be easier on memory? I'm using Postgresql, if it matters in this case. . . .     How do you manage your sql server database build/deploy/migrate for visual studio projects? We have a product that includes a reasonable database part (~100 tables, ~500 procs/functions/views), so we need to be able to deploy new databases of the current version as well as upgrade older databases up to the current version. Currently we maintain separate scripts for creation of new databases and migration between versions. Clearly not ideal, but how is anyone else dealing with this? This is complicated for us by having many customers who each have their own db instance, rather than say just having dev/test/live instances on our own web servers, but the processes around managing dev/test/live for others must be similar.

    I have a set of custom ASP.NET server controls, most of which derive from CompositeControl. I want to implement a uniform look for "required" fields across all control types by wrapping each control in a specific piece of HTML/CSS markup.   • How to check at runtime if a class implements certain interface?

    Let's say I have some content classes like Page, TabGroup, Tab, etc. Certain of those will be implementing my IWidgetContainer interface - it means they will geet an additional field named ContainedItems from the interface and some methods for manipulating this field. Now I need to reflect the fact that some class implements this interface by rendering out some special custom controls in my ASP.NET MVC Views (like jQuery Add/Remove/Move/Reorder buttons). For instance, TabGroup will implement IWidgetContainer because it will contain tabs but a tab will not implement it because it won't have the ability to contain anything. So I have to somehow check in my view, when I render my content objects (The problem is, I use my base class as strong type in my view not concrete classes), whether it implements IWidgetContainer. How is that possible or have I completely missed something? To rephrase the question, how do you reflect some special properties of a class (like interface implementation) in the UI in general (not necessarily ASP.NET MVC)?     Hi Masters, Good Day, I am new and very naive to Oracle DB. I am using Oracle 10G. Let me explain to you. I have one source database named ( DB1) and Target Database named (DB2). I have 2 schema's named dbs1 and dbs2 in the source database (DB1). I have exported both the database schemas in Source Database (DB1) and imported it successfully into the Target Database (DB2). Now I face a challenge in synchronizing these database schemas every time from Source DB (DB1) to Target DB (DB2). Can anyone please help in letting me know how can achieve this synchronization?     In our database all tables are linked back to a single table. This table has a bit column to limit whether the record is displayed. Currently the records are filtered on the code side of the website. Is there any way to set up permission so that userA would never see any record in the database where that common bit column was set to true? We are using SQL Server 2008. Alternatively we are also using entity framework 4.0 in .net 4 (in c#) if you have any ideas how it might be accomplished there? Thanks for your feedback.

    I've been following Microsoft's guide for installing a dev environment on Windows 7: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee554869.aspx In order for it to not run like a dog I've created a SQL Server 2008 instance on our database server specifically for this dev machine. The article does mention that you might be wanting to use an external database in regard to making sure the database cumulative update is installed. It doesn't make any other mention of configuring it to use a external database. I was hoping that the configuration wizard would then prompt about which database to use but annoyingly it just set-up the configuration database locally. How do I go about installing SharePoint on a dev environment with an external database, and will I need to reformat this machine and do it all again?

    I'm fairly new to programming and new to java, but I'd like to jump in the deep end with a little database driven website project. I've read quite a lot about requirements in the 'real world' requesting experience with Spring and Hibernate, so I have those installed on netbeans and a project created (if I hit run I get the default spring page). Now I just need a little guidance as to where to start designing my app (please tell me if I'm getting in a bit too over my head for a beginner!). Should I start off with my classes? - create all my classes as they map to my database tables and decide which attributes and methods each will require? Can anyone suggest any good books for maybe.. making a java based website from scratch (i.e. from design right through to deployment) that might be useful for a beginner? Any help appreciated thanks.

    I've got an agent that takes in states and returns actions, while keeping an internal representation of the utility of state/action pairs. I've also got an environment that takes in actions and returns state/reward pairs. I need to be able to set the agent up with a start state and then continuously go from agent -(action)- environment -(state, reward)- agent -(action)-... However, the internal states (which need to be updated every iteration) need to stay private (that is, within the agent or the environment). This means that I can't simply call environment as a function within the agent using state and action as arguments. I'm somewhat of a Haskell noobie, so I'm not even sure if this is possible.

  • Is there a best practice for maintaining history in a database?

    I don't do database work that often so this is totally unfamiliar territory for me. I have a table with a bunch of records that users can update. However, I now want to keep a history of their changes just in case they want to rollback. Rollback in this case is not the db rollback but more like revert changes two weeks later when they realized that they made a mistake. The distinction being that I can't have a transaction do the job. Is the current practice to use a separate table, or just a flag in the current table? It's a small database, 5 tables each with < 6 columns, < 1000 rows total.

    I am trying to get Weblogic 9.2.3 to talk to a legacy RedBrick database and am having trouble. I have the redbrick.jar file from the software installation and have added to my APP_RUNTIME_CLASSPATH and my MANIFEST_CLASSPATH. This is my jConnect template line: <url>jdbc:rbw:protocol:${DB_LT_SERVER}:${DB_LT_PORT}/${DB_LT_NAME}</url> <driver-name>redbrick.jdbc.RBWDriver</driver-name> (Variables get replaced with good values during build.) When starting up I get this error: weblogic.common.ResourceException: Unknown Data Source jConnectLT weblogic.common.resourcepool.ResourceSystemException: Cannot load driver class: redbrick.jdbc.RBWDriver Do I have to do more to make Weblogic see the RedBrick database? Thanks for any tips or pointers.

Now, however, I am creating a setup dialog that allows the user to connect the program up to their own database. I thought running context.CreateDatabase would be good enough to create the database, along with the tables, but the tables are not created. What is the preferred method for creating the database and tables when the user specifies their own server and database to use, when originally starting with a model?

  • We failed trying database per custom installation. Plan to recover?

    There is a web application which is in production mode for 3 years or so by now. Historically, because of different reasons there was made a decision to use database-per customer installation. Now we came across the fact that now deployments are very slow. Should we ever consider moving all the databases back to single one to reduce environment complexity? Or is it too risky idea? The problem I see now is that it's very hard to merge these databases with saving referential integrity(primary keys of different database' tables can not be obviously differentiated). Databases are not that much big, so we don't have much benefits of reduced load by having multiple databases.
