  • Parallel Processing Simulation in Javascript

    Hello, I'm new to JavaScript so forgive me for being a n00b. When there's intensive calculation required, it more than likely involves loops that are recursive or otherwise. Sometimes this may mean having am recursive loop that runs four functions and maybe each of those functions walks the entire DOM tree, read positions and do some math for collision detection or whatever. While the first function is walking the DOM tree, the next one will have to wait its for the first one to finish, and so forth. Instead of doing this, why not launch those loops-within-loops separately, outside the programs, and act on their calculations in another loop that runs slower because it isn't doing those calculations itself? Retarded or clever? Thanks in advance!

    In my python class we are learning about recursion. I understand that it's when a function calls itself, however for this particular assignment I can't figure out how exactly to get my function to call it self to get the desired results. I need to simply count the vowels in the string given to the function. def recVowelCount(s): 'return the number of vowels in s using a recursive computation' vowelcount = 0 vowels = "aEiou".lower() if s[0] in vowels: vowelcount += 1 else: ??? I'm really not sure where to go with this, it's quite frustrating.   • Does the box API require case-sensitive booleans?

    I'm having some issues with the box.com developer API, and it seems that this is due to the API requiring lower-case booleans in request parameters. When I make a call to say, delete a folder, the URI my framework is generating looks like this: (DELETE) https://api.box.com/2.0/folders/1234?recursive=True This doesn't work, and the API throws an error. However, if I manually set the URI to this: (DELETE) https://api.box.com/2.0/folders/1234?recursive=true Everything seems to work just fine. I'd like to confirm that this is indeed the behavior, and if it is, I'd like to request box fix their API!

  • Storing apostrophes, exclamation marks, etc. in mysql database

    I changed from latin1 to utf8. Although all sorts of text was displaying fine I noticed non-english characters were stored in the database as weird symbols. I spent a day trying to fix that and finally now non-english characters display as non-english characters in the database and display the same on the browser. However I noticed that I see apostrophes stored as &#39; and exclamation marks stored as &#33;. Is this normal, or should they be appearing as ' and ! in the database instead? If so, what would I need to do in order to fix that?

  • Should every class have its own namespace?

    Something that has been troubling me for a while: The current wisdom is that types should be kept in a namespace that only contains functions which are part of the type's non-member interface (see C++ Coding Standards Sutter and Alexandrescu or here) to prevent ADL pulling in unrelated definitions. Does this imply that all classes must have a namespace of their own? If we assume that a class may be augmented in the future by the addition of non-member functions, then it can never be safe to put two types in the same namespace as either one of them may introduce non-member functions that could interfere with the other. The reason I ask is that namespaces are becoming cumbersome for me. I'm writing a header-only library and I find myself using classes names such as project::component::class_name::class_name. Their implementations call helper functions but as these can't be in the same namespace they also have to be fully qualified!

  • Generically creating objects in C#

    What I am trying to do is load in objects from an XML save file. The problem is those objects are configurable by the user at runtime, meaning i had to use reflection to get the names and attributes of those objects stored in an XML file. I am in the middle of a recursive loop through the XML and up to the part where I need to create an object then thought ..... ah - no idea how to do that :( I have an array stuffed with empty objects (m_MenuDataTypes), one of each possible type. My recursive loading function looks like this private void LoadMenuData(XmlNode menuDataNode) { foreach (object menuDataObject in m_MenuDataTypes) { Type menuDataObjectType = menuDataObject.GetType(); if (menuDataObjectType.Name == menuDataNode.Name) { //create object } } } I need to put some code where my comment is but I can't have a big switch statement or anything. The objects in my array can change depending on how the user has configured the app.

    I'm currently working on some code for my Programming Languages course. I can't post the code but I'm permitted to talk about some high level concepts that I'm struggling with and receive input on them. Basically the code is a recursive DFS on a undirected graph that I'm supposed to convert to a concurrent program. My professor already specified that I should create my threads in the recursive DFS method and then join them in another method. Basically, I'm having trouble thinking of how I should keep track of the threads I'm creating so I can join all of them in the other method. I'm thinking an array of Threads but I'm unsure how to add each new thread to the array or even if that's the right direction.

    Hi everyone, I am experiencing a problem that has popped up recently and is causing quite a bit of trouble for our system.     When a library is released under the GPL v2, can a company use it internally for free? If they develop software based on it, do they have to release it under the GPL, even if they don't distribute it? Can they make money by using (not distributing) internally developed software that links to the GPL'ed library, without any compensation for the author? I am looking for a software license that only allows non-commercial uses (copy, modify, link to); the resulting derived programs must also be free for non-commercial uses. Is there any software license that does this for non-commercial uses, and prevents any commercial use (including using the software in order to make money)? It looks like the Creative Commons licenses are flexible enough to do something close to that, but I've read against using them for software. What do you think?

  • Why does this Bash regex match return an Exit Status of "2"?

    I'm writing a Bash script that needs to scan for the existence of non-ASCII characters in filenames. I'm using the POSIX bracket regex syntax to match the non-ASCII characters, but for some reason, when I test for the match in an if/then statement, the test always returns an Exit Status of 2, and never matches my test string.   • the size of apt-get update lists is too big

    I ran a clean install to Ubuntu 12.04 and so far everything has been working well. I especially commend the Ubuntu team for this release. I only noticed that the size of repository update is now about ~13MB. Normally, it is about this size for the first time you run apt-get update after a clean install and then ~ 23kb - 1300kb for subsequent updates. The output from apt-get update is the same I get for previous versions of Ubuntu (its pretty normal). Its a bit too long but look at an example output I got from running apt-get update.   • How to configure a zone cluster on Solaris Cluster 4.0

    This is a short overview on how to configure a zone cluster on Solaris Cluster 4.0. This is a little bit different as in Solaris Cluster 3.2/3.3 because Solaris Cluster 4.0 is only running on Solaris 11. The name of the zone cluster must be unique throughout the global Solaris Cluster and must be configured on a global Solaris Cluster. Please read all the requirements for zone cluster in Solaris Cluster Software Installation Guide for SC4.0. For Solaris Cluster 3.2/3.3 please refer to my previous blog Configuration steps to create a zone cluster in Solaris Cluster 3.2/3.3. A. Configure the zone cluster into the already running global clusterCheck if zone cluster can be created # cluster show-netprops to change number of zone clusters use # cluster set-netprops -p num_zoneclusters=12 Note: 12 zone clusters is the default, values can be customized! Create config file (zc1config) for zone cluster setup e.g: Configure zone cluster # clzc configure -f zc1config zc1 Note: If not using the config file the configuration can also be done manually # clzc configure zc1 Check zone configuration # clzc export zc1 Verify zone cluster # clzc verify zc1 Note: The following message is a notice and comes up on several clzc commands Waiting for zone verify commands to complete on all the nodes of the zone cluster "zc1"... Install the zone cluster # clzc install zc1 Note: Monitor the consoles of the global zone to see how the install proceed! (The output is different on the nodes) It's very important that all global cluster nodes have installed the same set of ha-cluster packages! Boot the zone cluster # clzc boot zc1 Login into non-global-zones of zone cluster zc1 on all nodes and finish Solaris installation. # zlogin -C zc1 Check status of zone cluster # clzc status zc1 Login into non-global-zones of zone cluster zc1 and configure the shell environment for root (for PATH: /usr/cluster/bin, for MANPATH: /usr/cluster/man) # zlogin -C zc1 If using additional name service configure /etc/nsswitch.conf of zone cluster non-global zones. hosts: cluster files netmasks: cluster files Configure /etc/inet/hosts of the zone cluster zones Enter all the logical hosts of non-global zones B. Add resource groups and resources to zone cluster Create a resource group in zone cluster # clrg create -n <zone-hostname-node1>,<zone-hostname-node2> app-rg Note1: Use command # cluster status for zone cluster resource group overview. The command 'clrg delete -F +' can be used in zone cluster to delete the resource groups recursively. # clzc halt zc1 # clzc uninstall zc1 Note: If clzc command is not successful to uninstall the zone, then run 'zoneadm -z zc1 uninstall -F' on the nodes where zc1 is configured # clzc delete zc1
