• Conversion constructor vs. conversion operator: precedence

  Reading some questions here on SO about conversion operators and constructors got me thinking about the interaction between them, namely when there is an 'ambiguous' call. Consider the following code: class A; class B { public: B(){} B(const A&) //conversion constructor { cout << "called B's conversion constructor" << endl; } }; class A { public: operator B() //conversion operator { cout << "called A's conversion operator" << endl; return B(); } }; int main() { B b = A(); //what should be called here? apparently, A::operator B() return 0; } The above code displays "called A's conversion operator", meaning that the conversion operator is called as opposed to the constructor. If you remove/comment out the operator B() code from A, the compiler will happily switch over to using the constructor instead (with no other changes to the code). My questions are: Since the compiler doesn't consider B b = A(); to be an ambiguous call, there must be some type of precedence at work here. Where exactly is this precedence established? (a reference/quote from the C++ standard would be appreciated) From an object-oriented philosophical standpoint, is this the way the code should behave? Who knows more about how an A object should become a B object, A or B? According to C++, the answer is A -- is there anything in object-oriented practice that suggests this should be the case? To me personally, it would make sense either way, so I'm interested to know how the choice was made. Thanks in advance

• Swig typecast to derived class?

  I notice that Swig provides a whole host of functions to allow for typecasting objects to their parent classes. However, in C++ one can produce a function like the following: A * getAnObject() { if(someBoolean) return (A *) new B; else return (A *) new C; } Where "A" is the parent of classes "B" and "C". One can then typecast the pointer returned into being a "B" type or "C" type at one's convenience like: B * some_var = (B *) getAnObject(); Is there some way I can typecast an object I've received from a generic-pointer-producing function at run-time in the scripting language using the wrappers? (In my case, Lua?) I have a function that could produce one of about a hundred possible classes, and I'd like to avoid writing an enormous switch structure that I'd have to maintain in C++. At the point where I receive the generic pointer, I also have a string representation of the data type I'd like to cast it to. Any thoughts? Thanks! -- EDIT -- I notice that SWIG offers to generate copy constructors for all of my classes.   I am developing a C# VS 2008 / SQL Server 2008 website. I have a Gridview. I included the Default.aspx and aspx.cs files below. But when I build this I get the below error: The Type '_Default' already contains a definition for 'btnOWrite' What do I need to do to fix this? I am not getting any errors now; just that this grid does not show up. Thanks! • Which book should I choose?

  Hi guys, I'm looking for a good read on object oriented design. The two books I'm currently looking Head First Design Patterns and Head First Object object-oriented analysis & design. They seem very similar when looking at the contents and browsing through available sample text. Which one would be the best choice? About myself: I have a bachelor in computer science and I am currently studying Msc. Software Quality Engineering (read Software Engineering with focus on Quality). I am already confident in object-oriented design and have a lot of programming courses in my backpack. I have done games in c++, courses in advanced java programming (I am SCJP certified), but my preferred language is C#. I have also worked with Java for the last 7 months while studying. I am currently also studying for certificates in C# (apart from my usual studies). So I believe I have the prerequisites of actually understanding the contents of both books. Reason: I just want to be better and keep evolving as a programmer. I think it is fun. I believe Bert Bates and Kathy Sierra are involved in both these books and I have previously read their SCJP preparation book in java. I really do enjoy their style of writing. • howto distinguish composition and self-typing use-cases

  Scala has two instruments for expressing object composition: original self-type concept and well known trivial composition. I'm curios what situations I should use which in. There are obvious differences in their applicability. Self-type requires you to use traits. Object composition allows you to change extensions on run-time with var declaration. Leaving technical details behind I can figure two indicators to help with classification of use cases. If some object used as combinator for a complex structure such as tree or just have several similar typed parts (1 car to 4 wheels relation) than it should use composition. There is extreme opposite use case. Lets assume one trait become too big to clearly observe it and it got split. It is quite natural that you should use self-types for this case. That rules are not absolute. You may do extra work to convert code between this techniques. e.g. you may replace 4 wheels composition with self-typing over Product4. You may use Cake[T <: MyType] {part : MyType} instead of Cake { this : MyType => } for cake pattern dependencies. But both cases seem counterintuitive and give you extra work. There are plenty of boundary use cases although. One-to-one relations is very hard to decide with. Is there any simple rule to decide what kind of technique is preferable? self-type makes you classes abstract, composition makes your code verbose. self-type gives your problems with blending namespaces and also gives you extra typing for free (you got not just a cocktail of two elements but gasoline-motor oil cocktail known as a petrol bomb). How can I choose between them? What hints are there? Update: Let us discuss the following example: Adapter pattern. What benefits it has with both selt-typing and composition approaches?

• Are document-oriented databases any more suitable than relational ones for persisting objects?

  In terms of database usage, the last decade was the age of the ORM with hundreds competing to persist our object graphs in plain old-fashioned RMDBS. Now we seem to be witnessing the coming of age of document-oriented databases. These databases are highly optimized for schema-free documents but are also very attractive for their ability to scale out and query a cluster in parallel. Document-oriented databases also hold a couple of advantages over RDBMS's for persisting data models in object-oriented designs. As the tables are schema-free, one can store objects belonging to different classes in an inheritance hierarchy side-by-side. Also, as the domain model changes, so long as the code can cope with getting back objects from an old version of the domain classes, one can avoid having to migrate the whole database at every change. On the other hand, the performance benefits of document-oriented databases mainly appear to come about when storing deeper documents. In object-oriented terms, classes which are composed of other classes, for example, a blog post and its comments. In most of the examples of this I can come up with though, such as the blog one, the gain in read access would appear to be offset by the penalty in having to write the whole blog post "document" every time a new comment is added. It looks to me as though document-oriented databases can bring significant benefits to object-oriented systems if one takes extreme care to organize the objects in deep graphs optimized for the way the data will be read and written but this means knowing the use cases up front. In the real world, we often don't know until we actually have a live implementation we can profile. So is the case of relational vs. document-oriented databases one of swings and roundabouts? I'm interested in people's opinions and advice, in particular if anyone has built any significant applications on a document-oriented database.

  How do I get started designing and implementing a script interface for my .NET application? There is VSTA (the .NET equivalent of VBA for COM), but as far as I understand I would have to pay a license fee for every installation of my application. It is an open source application so this will not work. There is also e.g. the embedding of interpreters (IronPython?), but I don't understand how this would allow exposing an "object model" (see below) to external (or internal) scripts. What is the scripting interface story in .NET? Is it somehow trivial in .NET to do this? Background: I have once designed and implemented a fairly involved script interface for a Macintosh application for acquisition and analysis of data from a mass spectrometer (Mac OS, System 7) and later a COM interface for a Windows application. Both were designed with an "object model" and classes (that can have properties). These are overloaded words, but in a scripting interface context object model is essentially a containment hiarchy of objects of specific classes. Classes have properties and lists of contained objects. E.g. like in the COM interfaces exposed in Microsoft Office applications, where the application object can be used to add to its list of documents (with the side effect of creating the GUI representation of a document). External scripts can create new objects in a container and navigate through the content of the hiarchy at any given time. In the Macintosh case scripts could be written in e.g. AppleScript or Frontier. On the Macintosh the implementation of a scripting interface was very complicated. Support for it in Metroworks' C++ class library (the name escapes me right now) made it much simpler.

  I am developing a Java Desktop Application and using JPA for persistence. I have a problem mentioned below: I have two entities: Country City Country has the following attribute: CountryName (PK) City has the following attribute: CityName Now as there can be two cities with same name in two different countries, the primaryKey for City table in the datbase is a composite primary key composed of CityName and CountryName. Now my question is How to implement the primary key of the City as an Entity in Java @Entity public class Country implements Serializable { private String countryName; @Id public String getCountryName() { return this.countryName; } } @Entity public class City implements Serializable { private CityPK cityPK; private Country country; @EmbeddedId public CityPK getCityPK() { return this.cityPK; } } @Embeddable public class CityPK implements Serializable { public String cityName; public String countryName; } Now as we know that the relationship from Country to City is OneToMany and to show this relationship in the above code, I have added a country variable in City class. But then we have duplicate data(countryName) stored in two places in the City class: one in the country object and other in the cityPK object. But on the other hand, both are necessary: countryName in cityPK object is necessary because we implement composite primary keys in this way. countryName in country object is necessary because it is the standard way of showing relashionship between objects. How to get around this problem?

• Managing inverse relationships without CoreData

  This is a question for Objective-J/Cappuccino, but I added the cocoa tag since the frameworks are so similar. One of the downsides of Cappuccino is that CoreData hasn't been ported over yet, so you have to make all your model objects manually. In CoreData, your inverse relationships get managed automatically for you... if you add an object to a to-many relationship in another object, you can traverse the graph in both directions. Without CoreData, is there any clean way to setup those inverse relationships automatically? For a more concrete example, let's take the typical Department and Employees example. To use rails terminology, a Department object has-many Employees, and an Employee belongs-to a Department. So our Department model has an NSMutableSet (or CPMutableSet ) "employees" that contains a set of Employees, and our Employee model has a variable "department" that points back to the Department model that owns it. Is there an easy way to make it so that, when I add a new Employee model into the set, the inverse relationship (employee.department) automatically gets set? Or the reverse: If I set the department model of an employee, then it automatically gets added to that department's employee set? Right know I'm making an object, "ValidatedModel" that all my models subclass, which adds a few methods that setup the inverse relationships, using KVO. But I'm afraid that I'm doing a lot of pointless work, and that there's already an easier way to do this. Can someone put my concerns to rest?

• How can I set the default value for a custom "Number" field in SharePoint?

  I created a custom field for a content type I am creating using the XML below. <field ID="{GUID}" Required="False" DisplayName="Likes" Name="Likes" Type="Number" SourceID="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/v3"><default>0</default></field> The field is meant to be used as a counter of sorts, and will be incremented programmatically. But, I can't get the value to default to "0" when a new item is created. However, for some reason, when I create a new column manually using the Site Collection settings page and configure it to default to "0" it works as it should. So far, I've tried the following tactics: I removed the "default" element from the field definition, and set the "DefaultValue" attribute on the content type definition. I exported a definition for the manually-created, working column (using an Imtech STSADM tool). Then, I added it to my field definitions XML and modified the IDs so that I could add it to my content type. When I did this, it still didn't work, even though it was exported from a working column! Any idea why this isn't working for me?

  This might be a little complicated. See code below. When image is clicked I want to change "MY-ID-NUMBER" in "value" and "src" of object. But I want the other information to remain. When link is clicked I want to restore "value" and "src" so I can use the same function for next image that is clicked. Is it possible? Please help! • Bad idea to have the same object, have a different side effect after method call.

  Hi all, I'm having a bit of a gesign issue(again). Say I have this Buttonpad object: now this object is a wrapper object over one in a com object. At the moment it has a method on it called CreateInto(IComObject). Now to make a new button pad in the Com Object. You do: ButtonPad pad = new ButtonPad(); pad.Title = "Hello"; // Set some more properties. pad.CreateInto(Cominstance); The createinfo method will excute the right commands to buid the button pad in the com object. After it has been created it any calls against it are foward to the underlying object for change so: pad.Title = "New title"; will call the com object to set the title and also set the internal title variable. Basically any calls before the CreateInfo method only affect the .NET object anything after has the side effect of calling the com object also. I'm not very good at sequence diagrams but here is my attempt to explain whats going on: This doesn't feel good to me, it feels like I'm lying to the user about what the button pad does. I was going to have a object called WrappedButtonPad, which is returned from CreateInto and the user could make calls against that to make changes to the Com Object, but I feel having two objects that almost do the same thing but only differ by names might be even worse. Are these valid designs, or am I right to be worried? How else would you handle a object the can create and query a com object?

• Aliasing `T*` with `char*` is allowed. Is it also allowed the other way around?

  Note: This question has been renamed and reduced to make it more focused and readable. Most of the comments refer to the old text. According to the standard objects of different type may not share the same memory location. So this would not be legal: int i = 0; short * s = reinterpret_cast<short*>(&i); // BAD! The standard however allows an exception to this rule: any object may be accessed through a pointer to char or unsigned char: int i = 0; char * c = reinterpret_cast<char*>(&i); // OK However, it is not clear to me if this is also allowed the other way around. For example: char * c = read_socket(...); unsigned * u = reinterpret_cast<unsigned*>(c); // huh? Summary of the answers The answer is NO for two reasons: You an only access an existing object as char*. There is no object in my sample code, only a byte buffer. The pointer address may not have the right alignment for the target object. In that case dereferencing it would result in undefined behavior. On the Intel and AMD platforms it will result performance overhead. On ARM it will trigger a CPU trap and your program will be terminated! This is a simplified explanation.   I'm having trouble using, in one trait, a Parser returned from a method in another trait. The compiler complains of a type mismatch and it appears to me that the problem is due to the path-dependent class.   Hi, I have situation in with I stucked and don't know way out. The problem is in my bigger model, but I have made small example which shows the same problem. I have 4 tables. I called them SuperParent, NamedParent, TypedParent and ParentType. NamedParent and TypedParent derives from superParent. TypedParent has one to many association with ParentType. I describe mapping for entities using queryView. The problem is then I want to get TypedParents and Include ParentType I get the following exception: An error occurred while preparing the command definition.   I have a WPF VB.NET project in Visual Studio 2008. For some reason, Visual Studio thinks that it needs to add an Imports MS.Internal.Xaml.Builtins to every auto-generated XAML partial class (= the nameOfXamlFile.g.vb files), resulting in the following warning: warning BC40056: Namespace or type specified in the Imports 'MS.Internal.Xaml.Builtins' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found. Make sure the namespace or the type is defined and contains at least one public member. Make sure the imported element name doesn't use any aliases. I can remove the Imports line, but, since this is an auto-generated file, it reappears every time that the project is rebuilt. This warning message is annoying and clutters my error list. Is ther something that can be done about it? Or is it a known bug?

  Using C# .NET 2.0, I have a composite data class that does have the [Serializable] attribute on it. I am creating an XMLSerializer class and passing that into the constructor: XmlSerializer serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(DataClass)); I am getting an exception saying: There was an error reflecting type. Inside the data class there is another composite object. Does this also need to have the [Serializable] attribute or by having it on the top object does it recursively apply it to all objects inside? Any thoughts?

  I have the below code that does not seem to work at all :( I keep getting: Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object expected The error seems to occur when the timeout is done. So if I raise the timeout with 10 seconds the error holds for another 10 seconds. I want to be able to update the number of friends online async. The number is shown with the following html: <a href="" id="showChat" >Friends online <strong id="friendsOnline">(?)</strong></a> The friends part is set at the first run, but when the timeout calls back it does not fire again. Also, I cannot see on which line the error occurs because if I want to break on the error it just shows "no source code" etc. The code below is the code I'm using.   Late last week I upgraded CC.NET locally and on the build server. The build server is still fine, but locally I am now getting the following error: Exception Details: Exortech.NetReflector.NetReflectorTypeLoadException: Unable to load types from assembly System.ServiceModel, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089: Failed to load 1 of the 3612 types defined in the assembly. Exceptions: - Unable to load type: System.Security.Authentication.ExtendedProtection.ChannelBinding Exception: System.TypeLoadException: Could not load type 'System.Security.Authentication.ExtendedProtection.ChannelBinding' from assembly 'System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'. I'm afraid this started after a batch of Windows updates this morning. I had another two updates that won't run, 979909 and 982168 (I had an update that wouldn't run last month).
