I dont know much about classes, but have a reasonable knowledge of PHP/MySQL.
But why should I learn classes? I know they are important but what benefits can I see using them that I cant with?
Hi,
as I know there is an official document for Java (JLS), I'd like to know if it's also the case of PHP language. I found the "Language Reference" section on the PHP manual, but it doesn't look as detailed as the JLS.
The thing is I have a good practical knowledge of PHP but I'm miserably clueless about what REALLY happens under the hood.
If there isn't any official document, could you recommend me some good books to read ?
Thanks in advance !
Rolf
I have been doing code for a few years and still feeling that my knowledge still not broad enough to become a professional. I have studied some books related to Design Pattern but I know there are many others.
So could anyone list the one which you think it is good to learn to become a better programmer and more professional?
Programming Languages I work on : C# , Ruby, Javascript
Is it possible to learn C# as your first computer language without any knowledge of the other three languages it combines?
I learned objective-c without knowing c first, but assuming I know nothing of C# or any other language is it possible to learn as a first language?
I'm using CSS 3 features like "rounded corner" or "shadow box".
IMHO These are fantastic features for people like me with no graphics knowledge. But, i've noticed, IE 7-8 not support CSS 3.
So i'm asking you: is there a way to "enable" some features maybe with some javascript functions to include in my html file ?
Thank you!

I have been developing in .NET for quite some time now. But now I have customer who wants me to develop an application for them in .NET for Windows CE.
I have done some embedded system programming in C before, but never in .NET.
Please share any tips or tricks that would make my life easier when taking this assignment, or perhaps knowledge about any pitfalls to watch out for.
Hi,
considering I have experience with Java SE: which language should I learn(and is best for that purpose) in order to build web applications some day with it? I have been contemplating PHP and Java EE. The latter does indeed seems as an obvious choice given my Java SE knowledge. But how does it fares in comparison with PHP and how good is it for the aforementioned purpose?
If there is a better language for this purpose, feel free to recommend it.
Thank you.
I am interested in learning Objective C so I can develop for the iPhone and Mac. I am a web developer with lots of experience with HTML, CSS, Javascript, and PHP, but I have no knowledge at all of C or Objective C. What is the fastest and easiest way for me to learn Objective C? Can you recommend any good resources for getting started?
I am using PHP open source and I need the map of a country highlighting all the states in different colors. Once a particular state is hovered over, some info about the state needs to appear. Please suggest me how to do this. Is it possible to do this using some basic stuff ... I mean nothing like what goes beyond my knowledge... Not sure if the tags that i have posted this query in is right...
Hi,
I'm searching a possibility to paint a graph in Java using AWT. My knowledge of Java is still basic, so this is mainly for getting used to AWT, even if it's already "old".

Hello, Django newbie here, I need to do a count over a certain filter in a django model. If I do it like so: my_model.objects.filter(...).count() I'm guessing it does the SQL query that retrieves all the rows and only afterwards does the count. To my knowledge it's much more efficient to do the count without retrieving those rows like so "SELECT COUNT(*) FROM ...". Is there a way to do so in django?
Please forgive my programming knowledge. I know this is a simple thing, but I do not understand why result is always 0. Why decimal will be fine?
int a = 100;
int b = 200;
decimal c = (a / b) * 100;
Many thanks.
It seems that Silverlight/WPF are the long term future for user interface development with .NET. This is great because as I can see the advantage of reusing XAML skills on both the client and web development sides. But looking at WPF/XAML/Silverlight they seem very large technologies and so where is the best place to get start?
I would like to hear from anyone who has good knowledge of both and can recommend which is a better starting point and why.
If I'm going to learn programming first time, How i should start?

What was an annoying programming situation you had that a little bit of knowledge could've solved? That after you struggled with something tedious/annoying/frustrating, you learned one small thing and said "oh, I could've done that?!"?
My example - I once suffered through an entire tedious semester of HTML in Notepad... only to discover Notepad++ (and DreamWeaver, IDEs, etc.) a couple of days after submitting the final project.

While allocating a dataset, What does MGMTCLASS of a dataset describe? To my knowledge it gives the retention and expiration period that it is gonna reside on disk and the possible values I have observed are BKUP35, NOBKNLIM etc. What are these stand for and what else are the possible value for this parameter? Hope I put my question exactly, please lemme know if i missed something...
I have never worked on ejb, when I started programming Spring was already arrived and all my projects have been with Spring only, recently I had one interview and they wanted knowledge of EJB3.0 and so I want to know how does EJB3.0 stack up with Spring Framework and why many projects now a day are with Spring Framework and not with EJB3.0, do not quote me here as I can be wrong
I would really appreciate if difference and benefits of using one over another could be explained from practical perspective.
Hi guys, I want to be a web developer and mobile web developer...I know HTML
I've done some research and read that XML and XHTML are necessary. Are there any other languages that I need to know? Would knowledge of Flash help me in my quest?
Although I'm an experienced C#/Winforms developer, I'm looking for a WPF tutorial that doesn't assume any previous WPF knowledge.
Please post any links you have to WPF tutorials.
Hello there,
I've offered an out-of-job girl to help her study programming (with an MCSD as the ultimate goal) - and she has no progrmming knowledge. The idea is that she'll study from books and I"ll help.
Help- I need a gentle introduction to programming book, very easy, very practical, very hands-on and up to date. Optimally would be for the .Net 4.0 MS enviornment (C#,Visual Basic) but other alternaitves (Jave, Python etc.) are OK.
Hey guys, I was wondering if there're any good sites that deal with learning C++/COM from the ground up? Looking for something like a crash course (two weeks, and not being hypothetical here). Assume knowledge in standard C/C++, or at least not a complete dummy.
