  When I write programs I using pass by value or pass by reference always seem to be logical methods. When learning about different programming languages I came across pass by name. Pass by name is a parameter passing method that waits to evaluate the parameter value until it is used. See Stack Overflow pass by name question for more information on the method. What I would like to know is: what are some good examples and/or reasons to use pass by name and should it be re-introduced into some more modern languages.

  I have written a small open source Java library for facilitating conversions between different types of objects (in the style of Google's gson, but quite more general). It seems to me that a nice natural name for my library is JConverter, after browsing in the web to see if another library with the same name already exists, I found a library with the same name for Joomla. My concrete question is: How important is to avoid naming collisions when creating an open source library if an existing library with the chosen name already exists in a complete different domain ? (in my concrete case, these are libraries even implemented for different languages).

• How important is the uniqueness of your domain name?

  I've finally come up with a domain name that I like and is available. The name is nonsensical and doesn't translate into anything meaningful in any language, as far as I know. It's something like "FOOBARite". (Don't steal that!) I'm wondering about a few search issues. Results-wise, searching for it in Google currently returns about 15k results, none of which are relevant (dead Twitter pages, various unpopular online handles, and botched french translations). However, Google starts off with a spelling suggestion, which removes a letter. ("Did you mean: FOOBARit?") That returns about 250k results for several different and unrelated websites/organizations by that name. One is some technology provider, another is a sign-language organization, another is the name of a font... None of them seem particularly popular, there's not that much activity on any of those pages. Anyway, the two are pronounced differently, they're just a letter off. Should I go with my idea or is this one-letter variation going to cause me problems? If my site becomes ranked well enough, will Google's spelling suggestion go away? I don't want users to search for my site name and be told they've spelled it wrong.

• How can I include my derived class type name in the serialized JSON?

  Sometimes working with the js Serializer is easy, sometimes its not.   When I attempt to serialize an object that is derived from a base, the serializer decided whether or not to include the type name. When its present, the type name is represented by a ___type attribute in the serialized json like this: {"d":{"__type":"Commerce.Integration.Surfaces.OrderCreationRequest","RepId":0}} The missing type name is a problem if I intend to ship the object back into a web method that needs to deserialize the object.   Without the Type name, serialization will fail and result in a ugly web exception. The solution, which feels more like a work-around, is to explicitly tell the serializer to ALWAYS generate the type name for each derived type.  You make this declaration by adding a [GenerateScriptType())] attribute for each derived type to the top of the web page declaration.   For example, assuming I had 3 derivations of OrderCreationRequest; PersonalOrderCreationRequest, CompanyOrderCreationRequest, InternalOrderCreationRequestion, the code-behind for my web page would be decorated as follows: [GenerateScriptType(typeof(PersonalOrderCreationRequest))] [GenerateScriptType(typeof(CompanyOrderCreationRequest))] [GenerateScriptType(typeof(InternalOrderCreationRequest))] public partial class OrderMethods : Page { ... } With the type names generated in the serialized JSON, the serializer can successfully deserialize instances of any of these types passed into a web method. • How to make a stack stable? Need help for an explicit resting contact scheme (2-dimensional)

  Previously, I struggle with the sequential impulse-based method I developed. Thanks to jedediah referring me to this paper, I managed to rebuild the codes and implement the simultaneous impulse based method with Projected-Gauss-Seidel (PGS) iterative solver as described by Erin Catto (mentioned in the reference of the paper as [Catt05]). So here's how it currently is: The simulation handles 2-dimensional rotating convex polygons. Detection is using separating-axis test, with a SKIN, meaning closest points between two polygons is detected and determined if their distance is less than SKIN. To resolve collision, simultaneous impulse-based method is used. It is solved using iterative solver (PGS-solver) as in Erin Catto's paper. Error-correction is implemented using Baumgarte's stabilization (you can refer to either paper for this) using J V = beta/dt*overlap, J is the Jacobian for the constraints, V the matrix containing the velocities of the bodies, beta an error-correction parameter that is better be < 1, dt the time-step taken by the engine, and overlap, the overlap between the bodies (true overlap, so SKIN is ignored). However, it is still less stable than I expected :s I tried to stack hexagons (or squares, doesn't really matter), and even with only 4 to 5 of them, they would swing! Also note that I am not looking for a sleeping scheme. But I would settle if you have any explicit scheme to handle resting contacts. That said, I would be more than happy if you have a way of treating it generally (as continuous collision, instead of explicitly as a special state). Ideas I have tried: Using simultaneous position based error correction as described in the paper in section 5.3.2, turned out to be worse than the current scheme. If you want to know the parameters I used: Hexagons, side 50 (pixels) gravity 2400 (pixels/sec^2) time-step 1/60 (sec) beta 0.1 restitution 0 to 0.2 coeff. of friction 0.2 PGS iteration 10 initial separation 10 (pixels) mass 1 (unit is irrelevant for now, i modified velocity directly<-impulse method) inertia 1/1000 Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any help from you guys!! :) EDIT In response to Cholesky's comment about warm starting the solver and Baumgarte: Oh right, I forgot to mention! I do save the contact history and the impulse determined in this time step to be used as initial guess in the next time step. As for the Baumgarte, here's what actually happens in the code. Collision is detected when the bodies' closest distance is less than SKIN, meaning they are actually still separated. If at this moment, I used the PGS solver without Baumgarte, restitution of 0 alone would be able to stop the bodies, separated by a distance of ~SKIN, in mid-air! So this isn't right, I want to have the bodies touching each other. So I turn on the Baumgarte, where its role is actually to pull the bodies together! Weird I know, a scheme intended to push the body apart becomes useful for the reverse. Also, I found that if I increase the number of iteration to 100, stacks become much more stable, though the program becomes so slow. UPDATE Since the stack swings left and right, could it be something is wrong with my friction model? Current friction constraint: relative_tangential_velocity = 0

  Spent the last afternoons working with Ruben Hinojo, who I met recently at the Tinkerforge/NetBeans integration course in Germany. He's Spanish, lives in Scotland, and joined the course by flying from Edinburgh to Amsterdam and then driving from there to the course in Germany. Since then he spent some days in Amsterdam and we've been working a bit in a cafe in Amsterdam. He's working freelance on a freight management system on the NetBeans Platform and here's a pic of him and his application: I showed him a few things to improve the initial appearance of the application, such as removing the unneeded tab in the editor position and displaying data at startup so that the main window isn't empty initially. • WiX major upgrade refuses to replace existing file!

  Hello! I have inherited this project with a WiX installer, and am required to make this version usefully upgrade the previous one! My problem comes in replacing the database files with new versions. No, the problem is not that they are locked, I can replace them manually, and in fact now ONE of them is replaced, while the other is not. Please, please tell me what I'm doing wrong here. I've tried several other solutions (including registry keys as KeyPath instead of CompanionFile) but nothing is quite working.   I'm unable to retrieve data from an XML document, any help is greatly appreciated. I'm using PHP 5.2.10 and the WSDL url is an internal link within my company.   In a DataTable object, is there added overhead to looking up a column value by name thisRow("ColumnA") rather than by the column index thisRow(0)? In which scenarios might this be an issue. I work on a team that has lots of experience writing VB6 code and I noticed that didn't do column lookups by name for DataTable objects or data grids. Even in .NET code, we use a set of integer constants to reference column names in these types of objects. I asked our team lead why this was so, and he mentioned that in VB6, there was a lot of overhead in looking up data by column name rather than by index. Is this still true for .NET?   My problem is that I am trying to reset some form cookies so when someone has completed their form, they are reset so it is possible for someone else to complete the form. Simple and obvious. But However many different lines of code I put in, the cookies just do not seem to be disappearing. • jQuery select by two name roots and perform one of two function depending on which root was selected

  I'm trying to get this code to work in jQuery and I'm trying to make sure that for each iteration of each root element, its alternate root element for that same iteration doesn't contain anything. Otherwise it sets the .val("") property to an empty string. Looking for a simple solution if possible using search, find, or swap. Each matching number is on the same row level and the same iteration count. I have two input types of input text elements with two different root names like so: 1st Root is "rootA" <input type="text" name="rootA1" /> <input type="text" name="rootA2 /> <input type="text" name="rootA3" /> 2nd Root is "rootB" <input type="text" name="rootB1" /> <input type="text" name="rootB2 /> <input type="text" name="rootB3" /> On blur if any of rootA is called call function fnRootA();. On blur if any of rootB is called call function fnRootB();. Again, I'm trying to make sure that for each iteration like 1 that the alternate root doesn't contain anything, else it sets the .val("") property to an empty string of the root being blurred. • Installing .NET 3.5 SP1 on server broke WCF

  I installed .NET 3.5 SP1 on server which previously had .NET 3.0 SP2. Before install site was working perfectly. After install and subsequeny server restart, site displays but anything that makes use of the WCF service has stopped working. The exception log reports exceptions like the following when any calls are made to the client proxy: The communication object, System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel, cannot be used for communication because it is in the Faulted state. The server's application event log gave the following errors after the install: Configuration section system.serviceModel.activation already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. Configuration section system.runtime.serialization already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. Configuration section system.serviceModel already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. which seems to be inline with the fact that anything WCF related has stopped working. I am not experienced in server configurations or WCF so looking for any assistance with this. Thanks!! Use a JAXWS/JAXB binding customization to rename the parameter. I have tried several variants of the binding customization, and searched Google for hours, but unfortunately I cannot find a solution to my problem.   Hi - Receiving recommendations for commercial TCP/IP stack implementation based on FreeBSD or NetBSD. Requirements are similar to a typical desktop PC running a browser, email and streaming voice/video. Which is to say a rich network functionality for a end-host type of device with mature implementation and reasonable performance. BSD derived network stacks are deployed in wide variety of situations for years and hence have mature implementation. It's supposed to run on a proprietary RTOS. Most vendors I found don't advertise if their stack is based on BSD. Any recommendations? -- Vineet

• Is it possible to scan Entities in jar files using JPA and hibernate

  I have the following situation : Project A - Contains a few entities and is independent Project B - Contains a few entities and is independent Project C - Contains few entities and is dependent on Project A & Project B. I am using Maven to manage dependencies and builds. When I try to test Project A and project B it goes through fine. Each of them has a persistence.xml and a separate persistent context. When I run Project C , It does map any of the entities. I have tried to use the auto-detect, specified the jar file attribute ... but nothing seems to work. It gives me a Mapping Exception saying unknown entity and wont persist or read the Entities from Projects A or B. I have posted the 3 persistence.xml files here. Also, I tried using the class attribute and using the same persistent context but it just wont find the files. Any help is really appreciated.   I'm debugging an apparent concurrency issue in a largish app that I hack on at work. The bug in question only manifests on certain lower-performance machines after running for many (12+) hours, and I have never reproduced it in the debugger. Because of this, my debugging tools are basically limited to analyzing log files. C# makes it easy to get the stack trace of the thread throwing the exception, but I'd like to additionally get the stack traces of every other thread currently executing in my AppDomain at the time the exception was thrown. Is this possible?

  I am trying to redraw the part of the DrawingArea that is visible in the Viewport in the expose-event handler. However, it seems that I am doing something wrong with the coordinates that are passed to the event handler because there is garbage at the edge of the Viewport when scrolling. Can anyone tell what I am doing wrong?
