• Window bounds set on window using AppleScript in OS X are being ignored

  I am trying to create a small AppleScript to create and move some Terminal windows around my screen. The problem I am running into is that in some cases, it seems that OS X is ignoring the bounds I am setting. Using the AppleScript Editor: tell application "Terminal" to set the bounds of the first window to {0, 50, 600, 700} tell application "Terminal" to get the bounds of the first window Shows the following in the Event Log: tell application "Terminal" activate set bounds of window 1 to {0, 50, 600, 700} get bounds of window 1 --> {0, 22, 600, 672} end tell Result: {0, 22, 600, 672} Visually inspecting the window that is created when the script runs shows that Result bounds are the ones being used by the window. Any ideas?

• Windows 8 Task Manager without elevating?

  In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the task manager ran non-elevated, and you didn't face a UAC prompt unless you chose "View Processes of All Users". In Windows 8 Preview, out of the box the Task Manager starts elevated every time. How can I configure it to start non-elevated so I don't get hit with a UAC prompt every time I check CPU usage or view the list of running processes to see if an application closed completely? (I am not looking for answers which involve weakening UAC, and I ask the community's help in downvoting any such suggestions.)

• Firefox switches focus to previous window when the current newly opened window's page loads

  The title pretty much sums it up. After opening the browser, when I open a new window (private browsing) and load the first page of interest, the focus goes back to the last Firefox window. It works with more than just 1 main and 1 private windows, like for example 3 main and 2 private windows. It repeats after closing all browser windows, waiting for it to unload and opening the browser again. I'm using Windows 7 and the latest version of Firefox, and it's been happening to me for about half a year on two different computers and a notebook (same OS and browser version). It's pretty annoying. How do I fix this?

  I'm new to this application toucan manager. How do I use it to download mediafire files automatically. By just providing the links. What link do I have to put in it? • Tiling window manager where dual heads share common workspace

  I want to use a tiling window manager with my dual monitor setup, but almost all wms seem to treat each monitor as an independent workspace. This means that I can change the workspace of monitor 0 without affecting the workspace of monitor 1. This is not what I want -- I want a workspace to span both monitors, where each monitor is essentially a separate column for tiling (my monitors are oriented vertically, so they are well-suited as tiling columns). When I switch workspaces, say with Mod-[0-9], I want both monitors to change contents. So far the only wm I have found to support this is wmii, but I'd love to try some other options. Have I missed this capability from other tiling wms?

• memcached and IIS manager with windows 2008

  I have memcached (c:\memcached) running on port 11211 and I have a problem configuring IIS manager I created a site in IIS manager binded to port 11211 and if I have memcached running and try and start the site it says "the process cant access the file because it is being used by another process" If I stop memcached and start the site in IIS (and enable directory browsing) I can access the directory structure http://localhost:11211 ok, if I then try and start memcached it errors with error 1053 "could not start the memcached server on local computer" I know I'm doing something fundamentally wrong here! just cannot figure out how I can use IIS and memcached together. • use i3 tiling window manager in RHEL 5

  For some time I have been using the i3 tiling window manager in Ubuntu. However at my new company we use RHEL5. I would dearly love to port over all my configs but Im having some trouble... An initial (naive) approach seems that a simple yum install i3 yields no results for i3. I then used some additional rpm repos by following instructions to add the EPEL RPM Repositories but it seems i3 is only bundled for RHEL = 6. Damn. I'm fairly sure that this must be possible but I'm pretty new to the Redhat scene and am not sure how to approach this problem. Any pointers would be gratefully received!

• Task Manager does not show memory usage

  I just noticed this yesterday. I selected different memory columns, none of them worked, and I've tried showing processes from all users. I'm using Win 7. It doesn't slow down my computer or does anything else. I just want to know why and how to fix it. Could anyone help me on this? • Rename Devices in Device Manager

  This is mostly just for the USB ports, as I recognize everything else in computers.... Anyways, is there a way to rename, or otherwise, identify which USB port (or other hardware for that matter) is which device in Device Manager? I know I can plug in a flash drive, then see what port it is connected with, and find out that way. What I would like though, is to find out that a certain plug is always a certain device in Device Manager. If I can then have a system in mind that always has the same order, I can look and see if a USB port is not being detected or not working properly, and as I uninstall/reinstall USB devices, I know I won't lose my keyboard or mouse, for example. • Unidentified Window OnStartup

  Every time I start up windows vista lately, I see a random floating window. It is a tiny little window with no title, and only the resize, maximize and restore buttons. I'd post an image, but I don't have reputation here yet. I can close it, and it does indeed go away, but I would love to figure out what it is and stop it from popping up at all. I used Autohotkey's window spy on it and all I learned is that it is a swing window, which doesn't help me out a whole lot. Is there a good way to identify which process it belongs to and figure out how to kill it?

• VS 11 Beta merge tool is awesome, except for resovling conflicts

  If you've downloaded the new VS 11 Beta and done any merging, then you've probably seen the new diff and merge tools built into VS 11.  They are awesome, and by far a vast improvement over the ones included in VS 2010.  There is one problem with the merge tool though, and in my opinion it is huge.Basically the problem with the new VS 11 Beta merge tool is that when you are resolving conflicts after performing a merge, you cannot tell what changes were made in each file where the code is conflicting.  Was the conflicting code added, deleted, or modified in the source and target branches?  I don't know (without explicitly opening up the history of both the source and target files), and the merge tool doesn't tell me.  In my opinion this is a huge fail on the part of the designers/developers of the merge tool, as it actually forces me to either spend an extra minute for every conflict to view the source and target file history, or to go back to use the merge tool in VS 2010 to properly assess which changes I should take.I submitted this as a bug to Microsoft, but they say that this is intentional by design. WHAT?! So they purposely crippled their tool in order to make it pretty and keep the look consistent with the new diff tool?  That's like purposely putting a little hole in the bottom of your cup for design reasons to make it look cool.  Sure, the cup looks cool, but I'm not going to use it if it leaks all over the place and doesn't do the job that it is intended for. Bah! but I digress.Because this bug is apparently a feature, they asked me to open up a "feature request" to have the problem fixed. Please go vote up both my bug submission and the feature request so that this tool will actually be useful by the time the final VS 11 product is released.

• Should I use the cool, new and awesome stuff [closed]

  I'm in the field of Web Development. I follow a lot of awesome people on Twitter(Paul Irish, Alex Sexton, David Walsh, Rebecca Murphey, etc.) By following these people I'm constantly updated of the new and cool stuff in web development(backbone.js, angular.js, require.js, ember.js, jasmine, etc.) Now I'm creating a web application for a client and because of the different tools, libraries, plugins that I'm aware of I don't even know anymore when do I need to use those or do I even need those, or how do I even implement it in a sane way where I won't have to repeat myself(DRY). What's your advice on what I really need to do in order to become better. Do I really need to use these cool new tools or should I just stick with what I know for now and try to make my code better. Should I unfollow these people in order to not pollute my mind with stuff that I can't really use now because I don't have the necessary experience in order to use it. What sort of things should I really be focusing on for someone like me who has only about 2 years of experience in the field of web development.

• Awesome and LXDE desktop managers messed up KDE

  I saw a desktop manager named "Awesome" earlier on Google+, and thought I'd give it a try. In short, I didn't like it, but it got me wondering what other desktops were like, which I hadn't tried. The first one to come to mind was LXDE. I installed that, and tried it. I wasn't a big fan, so I just went to log back into KDE. Only, when I log in, everything is screwy. My theme is weird (although, according to system settings, it is still the same). All the categories and application short cuts in the KMenu are gone, except my favorites, which are now renamed with the "short name", it seems. I know these things are global resources, so it is very likely that one of these Window Managers screwed it up, but I need it fixed. Actually, it seems that after restarting the theme problem fixed itself, but the KMenu items disappearing is still a problem. Does anyone know where these items are stored? (I know they are are just .desktop files somewhere, IIRC, but I don't remember where they are usually stored so I can see if they are still there). I'm hoping it's just a matter of a broken link or something somewhere, not deleted shortcuts... :/ In summary: Any ideas on what caused this? Do you know how to fix the KMenu, or at least where the .desktop shortcuts are stored for the KMenu so I can see if they still exist (crosses fingers).

• What makes Ubuntu awesome [closed]

  My question may sound stupid or inappropriate for this site in which case I apologize before hand. This thing has bothered me for quiet some time so please correct me if there is anything inappropriate: I have been using Ubuntu for past 1 year and I know how awesome it is and in what terms is it better than windows.But around 2 weeks ago some of my friends asked me to show them something on Ubuntu or tell something about Ubuntu that makes people prefer it over windows. I tried to convince them by telling things like its open-source, that most of the super-computers run on Linux, that its unaffected by virus and other stuff but they seemed unconvinced. Maybe what they we looking for was some mind-boggling feature which only Ubuntu (Linux) has. Since that day I have been thinking but yet don't have anything that will show them the true powers of Linux. Please suggest your response to such a situation as it troubles me that I am not able to explain them one thing that I myself believe in. Thank you. PS : I am not looking for a theoretical answer but would like to hear of one such application which it and only it provides.

• Equivalent of Windows 7 Winkey+Left / Winkey+Right for Window Tiling in OSX

  Windows 7 has a neat feature where the Windows Key in conjunction with the arrow keys tiles the active window. Windows key + left arrow moves it to the left half, windows key + right arrow moves your window to the right half of your monitor. Is there an equivalent to this functionality in OS X? Can anyone suggest some alternative metaphors by which to manage my windows? I find that OSX windows tend to be a bit more scatterbrained than their windows counterparts.

• WPF: Running code when Window rendering is completed

  WPF is full of surprises. It makes complicated tasks easier, but at the same time overcomplicates easy  task as well. A good example of such overcomplicated things is how to run code when you’re sure that window rendering is completed. Window Loaded event does not always work, because controls might be still rendered. I had this issue working with Infragistics XamDockManager. It continued rendering widgets even when the Window Loaded event had been raised. Unfortunately there is not any “official” solution for this problem. But there is a trick. You can execute your code asynchronously using Dispatcher class.   Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(new Action(() => Trace.WriteLine("DONE!", "Rendering")), DispatcherPriority.ContextIdle, null);   This code should be added to your Window Loaded event handler. It is executed when all controls inside your window are rendered. I created a small application to prove this idea. The application has one window with a few buttons. Each button logs when it has changed its actual size. It also logs when Window Loaded event is raised, and, finally, when rendering is completed. • Looking for a "light" compositing manager for GNOME

  I have an HP Pavilion DM3 (graphics is nVidia GeForce G105M), running Debian Squeeze with GNOME 2.30. My preference for DE is Gnome + Metacity + Nautilus. I'd like to use Docky, but it requires compositing. So I'm looking for a relatively "light" compositing manager. I realise that "light" is ambiguous, but I basically want something that won't chew through my notebook's batteries because of CPU or GPU usage. I know that Metacity is capable of compositing, but as far as I'm aware it's still testing. Some people report that it's smooth and lightweight, others claim that it eats up processor time. I've also seen references to a problem with nVidia, but no actual details. I'm not averse to Compiz, but I haven't used it before and I don't know what to expect in terms of "weight." And maybe there's something else I haven't heard of. So can anyone recommend anything? Or dispel my idea that Metacity is not the right tool for the job? (Originally posted on GNOME forums.)

• Comix is an Awesome Comics Archive Viewer for Linux

  Do you have a terrific collection of comics in electronic form but need a great app to view them with? If you have a Linux system then we have the perfect app for you…Comix, the open source comic reading powerhouse. For our example we installed Comix on our Ubuntu 10.10 system. Just go to the Ubuntu Software Center and conduct a quick search. When you go to install Comix in the Ubuntu Software Center, make sure to scroll all the way to the bottom and select Unarchiver for .rar files. The listing appears as a “non-free version” for some reason, but displays as free once selected. Odd, but nothing to worry about in the end… Once Comix is installed you can find it in the Graphics Section of the Ubuntu Menu. Comix also comes with a nice set of options to let you customize the app to best suit those important comic reading needs. • Make Network Manager use bridge for PPPoE instead of only working on ethernet?

  My ISP uses PPPoE on their DSL connections. I use Network Manager to connect to this using a bridged modem connected to eth0. Often, I want to test networking things, so a set myself up a KVM machine with a tap interface. I can then connect these interfaces to to virtual 'switches' by adding them to bridges. (I work for my ISP). Sometimes, I want to test cases where the PPPoE is connected more than once. For this, I would like to be able to add eth0 to my 'switch' (a bridge) so the VMs can have a 'bridged modem' connection to the internet. But I would like to still be able to run the PPPoE for my computer at the same time. Which means that I need to get network-manager to run PPPoE over the bridge (or eth0). The problem is that it considers eth0 (and the bridge) 'not managed' by network manager, so it refuses to use it. So, how can I have network manager dial PPPoE over a bridge?

• How to prevent Network Manager from auto creating network connection profiles with "available to everyone" by default

  We have several laptops at work which use Ubuntu 11.10 64bit. I have our Wifi Access Point requiring WPA2-EAP Authentication (backed by a LDAP server). I have the staff using these laptops when doing presentations by using the Guest Account. So by default when you have a wifi card, network manager will display available Wireless Access Points. So the logical course of action for a Novice(tm) user is to single left click the easy to use option in the Network Manager drop down list... At this point the Staff Member (who is logged in with the guest account) expects to just be able to connect and enter any authentication details if required. But because they are using the Guest account, they won't ever have admin permissions (nor do I want them to), and so PolKit kicks in with a request for admin authorisation. I solved this part by modifying the PolKit permissions required to allow all users to create System Network Connections... However, because these Staff members are logging onto the Wifi Access Point with Ldap Credentials and because the Network Manager is now saving those credentials as a System Connection, their password is available for the next guest user session (because system connection profiles are stored in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections.d/* ). It creates system connections by default because "Available to all users" is ticked by default when you quickly connect to a new wifi access point. I want Network Manager to not tick this by default. This way I can revert the changes I made to Polkit and users network connection profiles will be purged when they log out.
