• Smooth waypoint traversing

  There are a dozen ways I could word this question, but to keep my thoughts in line, I'm phrasing it in line with my problem at hand. So I'm creating a floating platform that I would like to be able to simply travel from one designated point to another, and then return back to the first, and just pass between the two in a straight line. However, just to make it a little more interesting, I want to add a few rules to the platform. I'm coding it to travel multiples of whole tile values of world data. So if the platform is not stationary, then it will travel at least one whole tile width or tile height. Within one tile length, I would like it to accelerate from a stop to a given max speed. Upon reaching one tile length's distance, I would like it to slow to a stop at given tile coordinate and then repeat the process in reverse. The first two parts aren't too difficult, essentially I'm having trouble with the third part. I would like the platform to stop exactly at a tile coordinate, but being as I'm working with acceleration, it would seem easy to simply begin applying acceleration in the opposite direction to a value storing the platform's current speed once it reaches one tile's length of distance (assuming that the tile is traveling more than one tile-length, but to keep things simple, let's just assume it is)- but then the question is what would the correct value be for acceleration to increment from to produce this effect? How would I find that value?

• How to make it so units don't stack up in one location?

  So I'm making a game in AS3, it's a strategy DotA-like game (for flash game equivalent, there's UDE) so far so good, I have the A* pathfinding algorithm all sorted out and the minion units move to the desired location as I want them to be. The problem a rise when a unit stops in a node that has already occupied by another friendly unit. Both (or more than two) of them stacks up in one location, it looks like they're one unit. I want to add collision detection so when they collide they don't stack up together. But now they stop when they collide on they way to a node. This isn't good because they won't move at all midway (they won't respond to enemy attacks like that). I've added a deltatime so they only stopped for 2 seconds before they move again to their designated designation. This moves them again but they flicker. Not how I want it. So, like the title said. How to make more than one units don't stack up in a node? And if possible, how to make them not flicker while moving (it's good if they can tell other friendly units on the way and avoid them accordingly)?

• How to use mount points in MilkShape models?

  I have bought the Warriors & Commoners model pack from Frogames and the pack contains (among other formats) two animated models and several non-animated objects (axe, shield, pilosities, etc.) in MilkShape3D format. I looked at the official "MilkShape 3D Viewer v2.0" (msViewer2.zip at http://www.chumba.ch/chumbalum-soft/ms3d/download.html) source code and implemented loading the model, calculating the joint matrices and everything looks fine. In the model there are several joints that are designated as the "mount points" for the static objects like axe and shield. I now want to "put" the axe into the hand of the animated model, and I couldn't quite figure out how. I put the animated vertices in a VBO that gets updated every frame (I know I should do this with a shader, but I didn't have time to do this yet). I put the static vertices in another VBO that I want to keep static and not updated every frame. I now tried to render the animated vertices first, then use the joint matrix for the "mount joint" to calculate the location of the static object. I tried many things, and what about seems to be right is to transpose the joint matrix, then use glMatrixMult() to transform the modelview matrix. For some objects like the axe this is working, but not for others, e.g. the pilosities. Now my question: How is this generally implemented when using bone/joint models, and especially with MilkShape3D models? Am I on the right track?

• How to schedule time-of-day upgrades

  Hello, I'm responsible for about 30 Ubuntu computers at a private K-8 school. We have only a 3Mbps internet connection serving the entire campus, and I would like to ensure that updates are done in the middle of the night - so that daytime tasks are not slowed down. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, and have set all computers to download and install security updates via the update manager. I have also installed cron-apt, and modified the config file to stagger the start times of the upgrades from about 10pm to 4am local time. HOWEVER - this morning I arrived at the school at 7:30am and all the computers were busy downloading a large security based update. Needless to say, all internet activity was slowed to a crawl (for the next 2 hours), and the computer users were very very upset. This was the event I'm trying so hard to prevent. It seems that my scheme to ensure middle of the night downloads failed, and I'm not sure why. I've also tried some schemes using unattended-upgrades & crontab, but there always seemed to be something scheduling upgrades to occur in addition to the ones I try to force at middle of the night. Is there a sure fire way to absolutely positively guarantee that updates will occur only at one specific time? It would be nice if the update manager just had a drop down menu to specify a designated time. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this  message for you.    Please provide the following diagnostic text to your system administrator. The following organization rejected your message: servername01.fqdn.com.   Problem: The SharePoint server relay rejects the message because it doesn't recognize the name.  You have set it up in Exchange, but you need to set up an alias in the SMTP service on the SharePoint server;   Solution: Configure an Alias Domain An alias domain is an alias of the default domain. You can set up alias domains that use the same settings as the default domain. Messages that are received by the SMTP Service for an alias domain are placed in the Drop folder that is designated for the default domain. To configure an alias domain, follow these steps: Start IIS Manager or open the IIS snap-in. Expand Server_name, where Server_name is the name of the server, and then expand the SMTP virtual server that you want (for example, Default SMTP Virtual Server). • Touchpad and Keyboard both stop working after long uptime

  I have an Asus N53SM laptop that I leave running for several weeks at a time. I never put it in hibernate or suspend, I only close the lid when I'm not using it. After a few days or weeks of running, the touchpad and keyboard will Both lock up (at the same time) for no apparent reason. I could be just surfing the internet when it happens. The touchpad and keyboard seem to only lock up when I'm actively using the laptop (not when idle), which may mean it's related to something I press, but I'm not sure? The touchpad never locks or unlocks when Pressing FN and the designated touchpad lock key (it does not seem to work on Linux). While the touchpad and keyboard are locked, I am able to plug in my USB mouse and successfully use it to control the screen cursor. I can also remotely get into the system with vnc and ssh, everything seems to run fine there as well. No processes appear out of control. It's just the laptops physical touchpad and keyboard that are locking up. How might I go about diagnosing this problem? What system logs to look at? (anything specific to look for in them?) Perhaps I should try reloading some modules? Any thing else I should inspect?

  My first question is about Crawl errors in Google Webmaster Tools. Crawl errors is devided into few sections. One of them is HTTP. I assume that all broken links in HTTP was somehow found by crawler, this is not the links from sitemap. If this was found by scanning all sitemap pages for links, why it doesn't mention what was the source page, like in sitemap section with column Linked From. And what the meaning of Linked From, I thought if the name of section is sitemap, therefore all URLs should be taken from sitemap, so why there is Linked From? The second question, what is the best way to trreat searching on the site. How come the searching result page are getting indexed? Because of the fact that all searching result page are getting indexed, I have to many page in Linked From. What's the right practice? Question three: In order to improve response time in WMT, can I redirect all crawler's requests to designated free web server? Is this good practice? Question four: How should I treat Google Analytics Code (with parameters PageView, PageLoadTime), in the case user request non existing page, should I render Google code or not? Right now I use Google Analytics Code on the common template page, such that every page, also non existing page with error message contains Google Analytics Code, it seems like it has influence on WMT.

• HTML Manifest for Content Folios

  I recently worked on a project to create a custom content folio renderer in WebCenter Content. It needed to output the native files in the folio along with a manifest file in HTML format which would list the contents of the folio along with any designated metadata and a relative link to the file within the download.  This way a person could hand someone the folio download and it would be a self-contained package with all of the content and a single file to display the information on the contents.  The default Zip rendition of the folio will output the web-viewable version of the file with an HDA formatted file for each one. And unless you are fluent in HDA or have a tool to read them, they are difficult to consume. I thought this might be useful for others, so I'm posting a copy of the component here. Beyond the standard instructions for installing a component, there is an environment configuration file (folionativezipwithmanifestrenderer_environment.cfg) which has a couple of options. FolioMetadataManifestList - This is a comma separated list of metadata fields (system or custom) that should be included in the manifest file. FolioMetadataManifestUseOriginalFilename - (True or False) If set to True, the filenames in the zip file will be based on the original filename as it was checked into WebCenter Content.  If False, it will use the 'Name' of the item as defined within the Folio.  This is usually the Title of the item. The component also includes the source code, so feel free to use this as a reference for creating other interesting folios.

• Windows Server or Linux for final project

  A few weeks ago I came up with an idea to develop a mobile app which will direct students in my university to the nearest printer availiable. The whole thing is part of my final project. The Android based app will need to perform the following tasks: The user's location in the campus is sent to the server. Assume this part works just fine. The server sends an SNMP request to the printers in the user's vicinity. I'll probably use PHP or Python for that part. The data requested by SNMP is processed and sent back to the client My question concerns the server. The university's IT manager offered me a designated server for development, which sounds great. Now I need to choose which OS I want installed on the server - Windows server or Linux (don't know which versions). I don't have any server programming/operating experince, but generally speaking I feel more comfortable in Windows enviroment (just because that has always been my OS). I don't have much time for learning a new OS, but when does it make sense generally to host or develop server side applications on a Windows environment versus a Linux environment?

• HP to Cisco spanning tree root flapping

  Per a recent question I recently configured both my HP (2x 2900) and Cisco (1x 3750) hardware to use MSTP for interoperability. I thought this was functional until I applied the change to the third device (HP switch 1 below) at which time the spanning tree root started flapping causing performance issues (5% packet loss) between my two HP switches. I'm not sure why. HP Switch 1 A4 connected to Cisco 1/0/1. HP Switch 2 B2 connected to Cisco 2/0/1. HP Switch 1 A2 connected to HP Switch 2 A1. I'd prefer the Cisco stack to act as the root. EDIT: There is one specific line - 'spanning-tree 1 path-cost 500000' in the HP switch 2 that I didn't add and was preexisting. I'm not sure if it could have the kind of impact that I'm describing. I'm more a security and monitoring guy then networking. EDIT 2: I'm starting to believe the problem lies in the fact that the value for my MST 0 instance on the Cisco is still at the default 32768. I worked up a diagram: This is based on every show command I could find for STP. I'll make this change after hours and see if it helps. • How to set ActiveModel::Base.include_root_in_json to false?

  I'm using Rails 3 w/ Mongoid, (so no ActiveRecord). Mongoid uses ActiveModel's "to_json" method, and by default that method includes the root object in the JSON (which I don't want). I've tried putting this in an initializer: ActiveModel::Base.include_root_in_json = false But get the error uninitialized constant ActiveModel::Base Any ideas how I can change this? I changed the default directly in the source-code and it worked fine, but obviously I'd like to do it properly. The variable is defined at the top of this file: Github - activemodel/lib/active_model/serializers/json.rb From the docs: "The option ActiveModel::Base.include_root_in_json controls the top-level behavior of to_json. It is true by default."

• Disk Search / Sort Algorithm

  Given a Range of numbers say 1 to 10,000, Input is in random order. Constraint: At any point only 1000 numbers can be loaded to memory. Assumption: Assuming unique numbers. I propose the following efficient , "When-Required-sort Algorithm". We write the numbers into files which are designated to hold particular range of numbers. For example, File1 will have 0 - 999 , File2 will have 1000 - 1999 and so on in random order. If a particular number which is say "2535" is being searched for then we know that the number is in the file3 (Binary search over range to find the file). Then file3 is loaded to memory and sorted using say Quick sort (which is optimized to add insertion sort when the array size is small ) and then we search the number in this sorted array using Binary search. And when search is done we write back the sorted file. So in long run all the numbers will be sorted. Please comment on this proposal.

  I'm using the new d:DesignInstance feature of the 4.0 series WPF tools. Works great! Only issue I'm having is: how can I set properties on the instance? Given something like this: <Grid d:DataContext="{d:DesignInstance plugin:SamplePendingChangesViewModel, IsDesignTimeCreatable=True}"/> How can I set properties on the viewmodel, aside from setting them in its default ctor or routing it through some other object initializer? I gave this a try but VS gives errors on compile "d:DataContext was not found": <Grid> <d:DataContext> <d:DesignInstance IsDesignTimeCreatable="True"> <plugin:SamplePendingChangesViewModel ActiveTagIndex="2"/> </d:DesignInstance> </d:DataContext> For the moment I'm going back to using a resource and 'd:DataContext={StaticResource SampleData}', where I can set the properties in the resource. Is there a way to do it via a d:DesignInstance?

  What is the best way to accomplish the following in C? #include <stdio.h> struct A { int x; }; struct A createA(int x) { struct A a; a.x = x; return a; } struct A a = createA(42); int main(int argc, char** argv) { printf("%d\n", a.x); return 0; } When I try to compile the above code, the compiler reports the following error: "initializer element is not constant" The bad line is this one: struct A a = createA(42); Can someone explain what is wrong? I'm not very experienced in C. Thanks!

  I am confused about the iPhone responder chain. Specifically, in the iPhone event handling guide http://developer.apple.com/iPhone/library/documentation/iPhone/Conceptual/iPhoneOSProgrammingGuide/EventHandling/EventHandling.html, we have the following: The first responder is the responder object in an application (usually a UIView object) that is designated to be the first recipient of events other than touch events. But UIView is a subclass of UIResponder. And the UIResponder class reference says this: - (BOOL)canBecomeFirstResponder Return Value YES if the receiver can become the first responder, NO otherwise. Discussion Returns NO by default. If a responder object returns YES from this method, it becomes the first responder and can receive touch events and action messages. Subclasses must override this method to be able to become first responder. I am confused by the apparent contradiction. Can anyone clear it up for me? For what it's worth, I did set up a simple view-based application, and call canBecomeFirstResponder and isFirstResponder on its view. Both returned NO.

  Pulling my hair out trying to debug this one. Earlier this morning, this code was working fine, and I can't see what I've changed to break it.   Hi, I'm trying to pick up Svn.NET (http://www.pumacode.org/projects/svndotnet/) library for use in my Mono project. I tried compiling its mockapp - svnmockapp project (http://www.pumacode.org/projects/svndotnet/browser/trunk/SvnMockApp) , I am able to get the references right and get it compiled right. I understand that it references 2 other modules libapr (libapr-1.so.0) and svn_client (libsvn_client-1.so.0) , by which I've created PumaCode.SvnDotNet.dll.config in /bin/Debug . That is all I've done to tried to try to get the mockapp at least outputting something to show that it is indeed interfacing SVN. Nevertheless, it is not working.   Hi, I need some ideas for a weekend project about Hadoop and OpenStreetMap. I have access to AWS EC2 instance with OpenStreetMap snapshot in my EBS volume. The OpenStreetMap data is in a PostgreSQL database. What kind of MapReduce function can be run on the OpenStreetMap data, assuming I can export them into xml format, and then place into HDFS ? In other words, I am having a brain cramp at the moment, and cannot think what kind of MapReduce operation that can extract valuable insight from the OpenStreetMap xml? (i.e. extract all the places designated as park or golf course. But this needs to be done once only, not continuously) Many Thanks

  I have a file called config.yml in my /config folder of my rails application. I also have an initializer: config/initializers/load_config.rb with the following code: APP_CONFIG = YAML.load_file("#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/config.yml") I am using the Whenever gem to set up a cron job, and would like to use my APP_CONFIG to call a function like so: #inside schedule.rb every 2.hours do runner "MyModel.someMethod('#{APP_CONFIG['some_value']}')" end but the Whenever gem doesn't seem to recognize the config file when I call whenever --update-crontab mysite How can I incorporate values from my configuration in my schedule.rb file (instead of hard-coding the value)?   hi, i have a very similar question as for this post. i would like to know how to rename occurances within a filename with designated substitutions. for example if the original file is called: 'the quick brown quick brown fox.avi' i would like to rename it to 'the slow red slow red fox.avi'. i tried this: new="(quick=>'slow',brown=>'red')" regex="quick|brown" rename -v "s/($regex)/$new{$1}/g" * but no love :( i also tried with regex="qr/quick|brown/" but this just gives errors. any idea what im doing wrong?

  Hello all, I have a page, which uses jQuery Autocomplete on the second two textboxes (investigator and institution). It is getting the data fine, and displaying it, but for some reason it is not filtering the list of data as i continue to type. Anyone know why? Is there something i need to do to turn this on? According to the jQuery site, the only options to the autocomplete initializer are delay, minLength and source. Thanks in advance! I'm using jQ v1.4.1 and jQui v.1.8rc1.
