  • Email Alias [email protected] Replaced with New Oracle Certification Support Tool

    - by Paul Sorensen
All Oracle Certification customer service issues previously sent to [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected], should now be submitted as service requests via the new request tool. Support via these email aliases ends today. Managing candidate communications via this tool will enable better issue tracking capabilities and ensure that all issues are handled quickly and efficiently. The integrated tool will also help us to more easily research historical and related issues to enable improved certification communications and business processes. For now, questions related to Java, Oracle Solaris (Cluster), MySQL, NetBeans or OpenOffice.org exam or certification, will still be sent to [email protected] and resolved via email. Questions related to the status of an Oracle Certification Success Kit, will still be sent to [email protected] and resolved via email. ?We are excited about this new offering and ?c?o?n?t?i?n?u?e? ??t?o??????? ?w?o?r?k? ?t?o?w?a?r?d ?improve?d customer ?s?e?r?v?i?c?e?? for our OCP community. • The Primary Cause of Failed IT Projects

    - by Paul Nielsen
During my career I’ve been a part of dozens of projects. Some I was on from the start, most I came in to help bail out. Some went smooth and were a pleasure to build and maintain and some projects failed (failed being broadly defined as projects that were not completed, or were completed but were a horrid mess – very complex, impossible to maintain, refactor, and a royal pain to keep running.) While there are a number of factors that can contribute to a failed project, in my career it seems the primary...(read more)

  • setting globals in html or body [migrated]

    - by paul smith
I have some questions regarding the following css that I found: html, body { height:100%; min-width:100%; position:absolute; } html { background: none repeat scroll 0 0 #fff; color:#fff; font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:15px; } is it necessary to have height and min-width to 100% on the html and body? What's the benefit? what is the reason for using position absolute? why did they set the background/color/font on the html and not the body? Is there a difference? Or is it just preference?

  • Future of Programmers [closed]

    - by Brian Paul
Possible Duplicate: Will programmers be around in a few years? I have a passion of web development, but have been wondering of late, what is the future of web programming, and just programming in general. I will give an example to illustrate this, companies now most of them buy/ are willing to spend more money to implement enterprise level products, coming from big companies, than hiring a programmer, because when you look at the long term, instead of paying this programmer, and being tied to his ideas and skills, better buy a product, which you are guaranteed high level functions and support. Therefore what will be the future to programmers?

  • Running 32-bit SSIS in a 64-bit Environment

    - by John Paul Cook
After my recent post on where to find the 32-bit ODBC Administrator on a 64-bit SQL Server, a new question was asked about how to get SSIS to run with the 32-bit ODBC instead of the 64-bit ODBC. You need to make a simple configuration change to the properties of your BIDS solution. Here I have a solution called 32bitODBC and it needs to run in 32-bit mode, not 64-bit mode. Since I have a 64-bit SQL Server, BIDS defaults to using the 64-bit runtime. To override this setting, go to the property pages...(read more)

  • Rotating object along bezier curve: not rotating enough?

    - by Paul
I tried to follow the instructions from the threads on the forum (Cocos2d rotating sprite while moving with CCBezierBy) with Unity, in order to rotate my object as it moves along a bezier curve. But it does not rotate enough, the angle is too low, it goes up to 6 instead of 90 for example, as you can see on this image (the y eulerAngle is at 6, I would expect it to be around 90 with this curve) : Would you know why it does this? And how to make the rotation toward the next point? Here is the code (in c# with Unity) : (I am comparing x and z to get the angle, and adding the angle to eulerAngles.y so that it rotates around the y axis) void Update () { if ( Input.GetKey("d") ) start = true; if ( start ){ myTime = Time.time; start = false; } float theTime = (Time.time - myTime) *0.5f; if ( theTime < 1 ) { car.position = Spline.Interp( myArray, theTime );//creates the bezier curve counterBezier += Time.deltaTime; //compare 2 positions after 0.1f if ( counterBezier > 0.1f ){ counterBezier = 0; cbDone = false; newpos = car.position; float angle = Mathf.Atan2(newpos.z - oldpos.z, newpos.x - oldpos.x); angle += car.eulerAngles.y; car.eulerAngles = new Vector3(0,angle,0); } else if ( counterBezier > 0 && !cbDone ){ oldpos = car.position; cbDone = true; } Thanks

  • Cheating Incident

    - by Paul Sorensen
Hi Everyone -I just wanted to give you a heads-up on some recent actions that we had to take regarding someone who tried to cheat on a test.Just last week, we had a candidate who was bold enough to try to take screen-shots during the exam using his cell phone. Of course this is completely against Oracle Certification Program policy. This candidate's exam was immediately stopped, and the candidate was ejected from the testing center.Of course it doesn't end there. This candidate was also suspended permanently from the Oracle Certification Program, and all of his previous certifications were revoked. He is no longer eligible to participate in the program. Unfortunately - if this candidate works for an Oracle partner company, then his company will also likely become aware of his indiscretion - particularly when they request validation of his certification.Although this particular candidate was blatantly involved in content theft, any type of cheating incident is very unfortunate. It erodes the value of the certification credentials, and hurts everyone involved. The actions described above represent our efforts to curb cheating and maintain the value of Oracle certification credentials.I encourage anyone seeking Oracle certification to carefully read and adhere to the Oracle Certification Program Fraudulent Activity Policy. Thanks,QUICK LINKSOracle Certification Program Candidate Agreement (PDF 155K)Oracle Certification Program Fraudulent Activity Policy

  • *DX11, HLSL* - Colour as 4 floats or one UINT

    - by Paul
With the DX11 pipeline, would it be much quicker for the vertex buffer to pass one single UINT with one byte per channel to the input assembler, as opposed to three floats? Then the vertex shader would convert the four bytes to four floats, which I guess is the required colour format for the pipeline. In this instance, colour accuracy isn't an issue. The vertex buffer would need to be updated many times per frame, so using a single UINT and saving 12 bytes for every vertex could well be worth it: quicker uploads to vram and also less memory used. But the cost is the extra shader work for every vertex to convert each 8 bits of the input UNIT into a float. Anyone have an idea if it might be worth doing? Or, is it possible for the pipeline to be set to just internally use a four-byte colour format? The swap chain buffer has been initialised as DXGI_FORMAT_R8G8B8A8_UNORM, so ultimately that's how the colour will be written. Thanks!

  • Unity: Spin wheels to move vehicle

    - by Paul Manta
I am just getting started with Unity and I'd like to ask a question. If I have a "Vehicle" object that has two children: "FrontWheel" and "BackWheel" (both 'wheels' are cylinders), how should I set everything up such that I can move the entire vehicle by turning its wheels? When I apply a torque to "FrontWheel", the vehicle starts to move, but instead of the whole thing the moving together, the chassis is rolling on the cylinders and eventually falls off. How can I prevent it from doing that?

  • Great Blog Comments

    - by Paul Sorensen
Just a quick note to let you know that in the interest of keeping the most useful content available here on the Oracle Certification Blog, we do moderate the comments. We welcome (and encourage dialog, questions, comments, etc) here on the topics at hand. We'll never 'censor' out a comment just because we don't like it - in fact, this is how we often learn ways in which we can do better. But of course we will filter out the typical list like anyone else: crude/offensive remarks, foul language, reference to illegal activity, etc. We will also often redirect any customer-service type inquiries to [email protected] where they can best be handled. Also, if you have a question of a general nature, please research it on the Oracle Certification website first. We often won't respond to questions asking such as "tell me how to get 11g ocp", as we've already made sure that you have that kind of information available. Now if we've inadvertently 'hidden' something on our site (gulp), then fair enough - please let us know that you're having a hard time finding it and we'll be sure to try and "unbury it" ;-)Additionally, you may have more of an 'opinion' type question, such as "should I do 'x' certification or 'y' certification." For these, we highly recommend checking on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Certification Forum, where you can engage in peer-to-peer discussions, share techniques, advice and best practices with others in the field. In the meantime, please continue to share your thoughts, ideas, opinions, tech tips etc - we look forward to seeing them and passing them wherever we can!QUICK LINKS:Oracle Certification WebsiteEmail - Customer ServiceOracle Technology Network (OTN) Certification Forum

  • BizTalk HL7 Receive Pipeline Exception

    - by Paul Petrov
If you experience sequence of errors below with BizTalk HL7 MLLP receive ports you may need to request a hotfix from Microsoft. Knowledge base article number is 2454887 but it’s still not available on the KB site. The hotfix is recently released and you may need to open support ticket to get to it. It requires three other hotfixes installed: ·         970492 (DASM 3.7.502.2) ·         973909 (additional ACK codes) ·         981442 (Microsoft.solutions.btahl7.mllp.dll 3.7.509.2) If the exceptions below repeatedly appear in the event log you most likely would be helped by the hotfix: Fatal error encountered in 2XDasm. Exception information is Cannot access a disposed object. Object name: 'CEventingReadStream'. There was a failure executing the receive pipeline: "BTAHL72XPipelines.BTAHL72XReceivePipeline, BTAHL72XPipelines, Version=1.3.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" Source: "BTAHL7 2.X Disassembler" Receive Port: "ReceivePortName" URI: "IPAddress:portNumber" Reason: Cannot access a disposed object. Object name: 'CEventingReadStream'. The Messaging Engine received an error from transport adapter "MLLP" when notifying the adapter with the BatchComplete event. Reason "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." We’ve been through a lot of troubleshooting with Microsoft Product Support and they did a great job finding an issue and releasing a fix.

  • Is it bad practice for services to share a database in SOA?

    - by Paul T Davies
I have recently been reading Hohpe and Woolf's Enterprise Integration Patterns, some of Thomas Erl's books on SOA and watching various videos and podcasts by Udi Dahan et al. on CQRS and Event Driven systems. Systems in my place of work suffer from high coupling. Although each system theoretically has its own database, there is a lot of joining between them. In practice this means there is one huge database that all systems use. For example, there is one table of customer data. Much of what I've read seems to suggest denormalising data so that each system uses only its database, and any updates to one system are propagated to all the others using messaging. I thought this was one of the ways of enforcing the boundaries in SOA - each service should have its own database, but then I read this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4019902/soa-joining-data-across-multiple-services and it suggests this is the wrong thing to do. Segregating the databases does seem like a good way of decoupling systems, but now I'm a bit confused. Is this a good route to take? Is it ever recommended that you should segregate a database on, say an SOA service, an DDD Bounded context, an application, etc?

  • External drive hanging, load average through the roof

    - by Paul Tomblin
I have an external USB drive, and I run an hourly rsync to it as a backup. This has been working fine for years. This weekend, I got two new 2Tb internal drives, and decided it was time to re-install Ubuntu from scratch to clear out all the old cruft. About once a day since the re-install, the backup script hangs hard, usually in the "rm -rf" I do before the rsync. By the time I notice the problem, my load average is in the stratosphere and climbing fast (one time, it was over 150), but anything that doesn't touch the drive seems to be running fine. One thing that I find suspicious is that something, I don't know what, is doing a "smartctl" and a "hdparm" command on the USB drive. I'm pretty sure smartctl isn't supposed to run on external drives. I can't figure out what's doing it, either. Here's part of ps auwwfx when it's hung: root 7310 0.0 0.0 4248 352 ? • Temporary Tables in Stored Procedures

    - by Paul White
Ask anyone what the primary advantage of temporary tables over table variables is, and the chances are they will say that temporary tables support statistics and table variables do not. This is true, of course; even the indexes that enforce PRIMARY KEY and UNIQUE constraints on table variables do not have populated statistics associated with them, and it is not possible to manually create statistics or non-constraint indexes on table variables. Intuitively, then, any query that has alternative execution...(read more)

  • Advantages and disadvantages of libgdx [on hold]

    - by Paul
I've been an android developer for a while and am thinking about getting into gaming. While looking for a game dev framework, I thought libgdx provides very friendly documentation and functionality. So I would like to use it if there is no big obstacle. But when I tried to see how many developers employ this library, I could find not that many. Is there anything wrong with this library? In other words, I would like to know its advantages or disadvantages from any experienced developer. UPDATE: After reviewing its documentations and trying to build simple games with libgdx, I decided to go with it as its documentations are good enough and its community is very active. What I liked the most is that it provides a bunch of demo games that I can learn a lot from.

  • Undocumented Query Plans: Equality Comparisons

    - by Paul White
The diagram below shows two data sets, with differences highlighted: To find changed rows using TSQL, we might write a query like this: The logic is clear: join rows from the two sets together on the primary key column, and return rows where a change has occurred in one or more data columns.  Unfortunately, this query only finds one of the expected four rows: The problem, of course, is that our query does not correctly handle NULLs.  The ‘not equal to’ operators <> and != do not evaluate...(read more)

  • Accessing Repositories from Domain

    - by Paul T Davies
Say we have a task logging system, when a task is logged, the user specifies a category and the task defaults to a status of 'Outstanding'. Assume in this instance that Category and Status have to be implemented as entities. Normally I would do this: Application Layer: public class TaskService { //... public void Add(Guid categoryId, string description) { var category = _categoryRepository.GetById(categoryId); var status = _statusRepository.GetById(Constants.Status.OutstandingId); var task = Task.Create(category, status, description); _taskRepository.Save(task); } } Entity: public class Task { //... public static void Create(Category category, Status status, string description) { return new Task { Category = category, Status = status, Description = descrtiption }; } } I do it like this because I am consistently told that entities should not access the repositories, but it would make much more sense to me if I did this: Entity: public class Task { //... public static void Create(Category category, string description) { return new Task { Category = category, Status = _statusRepository.GetById(Constants.Status.OutstandingId), Description = descrtiption }; } } The status repository is dependecy injected anyway, so there is no real dependency, and this feels more to me thike it is the domain that is making thedecision that a task defaults to outstanding. The previous version feels like it is the application layeer making that decision. Any why are repository contracts often in the domain if this should not be a posibility? Here is a more extreme example, here the domain decides urgency: Entity: public class Task { //... public static void Create(Category category, string description) { var task = new Task { Category = category, Status = _statusRepository.GetById(Constants.Status.OutstandingId), Description = descrtiption }; if(someCondition) { if(someValue > anotherValue) { task.Urgency = _urgencyRepository.GetById (Constants.Urgency.UrgentId); } else { task.Urgency = _urgencyRepository.GetById (Constants.Urgency.SemiUrgentId); } } else { task.Urgency = _urgencyRepository.GetById (Constants.Urgency.NotId); } return task; } } There is no way you would want to pass in all possible versions of Urgency, and no way you would want to calculate this business logic in the application layer, so surely this would be the most appropriate way? So is this a valid reason to access repositories from the domain?

The 32-bit ODBC Administrator is found here: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe You might want to make a shortcut for it to make it easy to find. I've been using a Netgear router sharing the signal through my Huawei E160 dongle, but following the speeds update and the device limit, it does not satisfy the demand. Through research, I've found that Huawei E398 is the latest and functional dongle so far. I'm going to update, but the confusion comes: Is it compatible for my Netgear router? Will it work? Any information will be appreciated. I found the unlocked E398 here.
