• Windows: Running an AutoIt script to launch a GUI app - on a server, when no one is logged in

  I want to run an AutoIt script every day at 1:00 AM on a Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition. Since this is a server, obviously there is rarely someone sitting there logged in at the console, so the procedure needs to account for this. The AutoIt script in question launches and sends keypresses to a GUI app, so the process needs to include creating some sort of session for the user running the schedule task. Is there a way to do this? I can't just use scheduled tasks run the AutoIt script when no one is logged in - if I do, it fails to launch at all. I thought that I might be able to create an RDP session and run the scheduled task as that user, inside that session, but I haven't found a way to create an RDP session without launching mstsc.exe -- which is itself a GUI app, and I have the same problem again.

  On a Windows server which is in a domain, I have a script I run from scheduled tasks. I want this script to be run under a mydomain\peter user account. It is simple to do it with scheduled tasks, if you know Peter's password. And once done, the script stops when Peter decides to (or has to) change his password. On Linux, a cron job can be run with whatever user account without having to know the corresponding password. And root can run anything on behalf on another user (with su and sudo). Any way to do this with Windows? My need is for a old Windows 2003 server, but I can manage to run it from another computer.

• Backup software (that runs on Windows) to burn files and folders to DVD every week?

  Has anyone successfully burned a selection of folders (I'm sure you must have!) to disk every certain amount of time (scheduled)? I'm looking for a solution where I could leave a blank disk in one of my computers every weekend and have a backup ready the next morning. • Updating a script currently being ran by Task Scheduler on Windows

  I have a scheduled task that runs a script on a ahem schedule ahem that updates a local git repo. This script is a file in this local git repo. Currently, what I'm seeing is that the script is ran, git complains that permissions are denied to write to file which actually results in the script being deleted! The next time the scheduled task runs the script file is now missing! How can I ensure that when I pull changes to this script from the repo that the file is actually updated?

• Looking for a Linux stream ripper that can be scheduled

  I have an MP3 stream I want to schedule a recording of. I can do it using wget to a file, its just a straight mp3 stream. However I'd like to use a command line stream ripper that will do a better job. Any one know of one? Update 1 WGET is grabbing whatever part of the stream it comes in on. This may not really be the start of a frame in the MP3 file. Also, wget is not really schedule ready. I experimented with starting it with a cron job, then killing it later, this produced a file that didn't really start and stop where I wanted.

  I am new to the world of Rake and currently writing a Rake Script which consists of various tasks depending on the arguments passed to it on runtime. From some Tutorials over the web, I figured out how to pass parameters to the Script as well how to make a task which is dependent on other subtasks.   Hi All, I've a scenario wherein I need to send/assign tasks from my browser UI to the concerned. This should happen with Outlook being offline (or for that matter outlook not even configured on the terminal) so that the user can be accessing a workflow from any terminal (using his/her AD credentials) and if required should have the ability to send a task to the concerned without having to return to his own terminal to be able to do so. I envision that the user's credentials should be used to look up the AD for his/her email ID and send a task using the same from anywhere in the intranet. Using Outlook object library I have been able to assign/send tasks, but with the Outlook being fired up and not otherwise. Redemption does the sync of contacts while Outlook is offline but not tasks. Kindly help if anybody has had a chance to do something similar. Thanks in advance.

  I am using a while activity for creating multiple tasks for a workflow. The code is executed fine and the task is created when the loop runs only once. But when the loop runs twice or more, only one task is getting created. Also the WF status shows as Error Occured. All I want to do here is create multiple tasks (no of tasks depends on an entered column value) for the same user. Is it posible to use 'while' in this scenario? Or is there any other way to go ahead? NB: I am using state machine workflow.

  Hi, I have server with django on it, this server runs some manage.py commands and update database. Now I need to move some of this tasks to different servers. I don't want to allow remote db access and need some tool\lib to be able to start task on remote servers by main server's command and update tasks code/add new tasks. I have ssh access to every server, all servers run under debian and all code in python. I was thiking about creating my own xmpp based solution(server sends messages to slave servers with commands to execute, like "update task", "run task"), or maybe some low-level ssh based solution where main server logs to slave servers and executes bash commands. But I would be happy to hear any advices.

However, you can not split a test so I do not want the next test to begin if there is not enough time within the specified working hours of the day to complete it. Also, I would like to begin each day with a set-up period before the actual testing can begin.   I really like OS X's iCal. Entering events is easy with the mouse and it also gives you a very real visual sense of how long tasks take to complete. We often work remotely in our organisation, so we use a few shared calendars between key individuals to provide us with an overview of hours worked, availability & schedule conflicts without too much disruption to our various, hectic workflows. It really is a neat solution, especially on shared tasks. How many times have you tasked a remote colleague and then lost the thread on whether that task was completed or not? With shared calendars you get a much clearer idea of what your people are working on without having to pick up the phone or compose a chat. However, there are a few areas where this approach fails... iCloud syncing often needs to be re-jiggered The "view only" option on shared calendars does not seem to work, which makes all shared calendars editable by others There is no decent reporting with this workflow There is no task categorisation or tagging Things get very busy in iCal when working with more than 2 shared calendars I've looked at a few task management apps like Basecamp and Harvest, but nothing appears to let me edit my calendar natively and then sync with a 3rd party. Interested in solutions to improve the above workflow and enable us to elegantly increase the amount of users.

• How can I unify my email, calendar and tasks (2 exchange accounts + 1 gmail)

  This is my situation: I work as a consultant, and thus work out of multiple computers: my work-laptop a desktop at my primary client my desktop at home an android smartphone an android tablet Likewise, I have multiple accounts: A Microsoft Exchange (2010 AFAIK) account A Microsoft Exchange (2007 AFAIK) account A gmail account The most important thing I need is the ability to have events in one calendar affect the free / busy status of all other accounts (so that if I am busy on Monday 9am with an event from my employer's account, it will show that time as busy in my client's account, and in the gmail account. Second thing I need is a unified view of all of my accounts' info: Appointments, email, tasks, and contacts (in that order of importance). I've already tried outlook synchronization tools such as gSyncit, to sync both exchange accounts with gmail, but this creates a mess when updating appointments (deleted appointments sometimes return, timestamps revert). Is there perhaps some way to at least synchronize the free/busy state in a way that all of my calendar apps / accounts will look there to see if I can be invited?   I'm looking forward to Task/ToDo Manager. It should work under Android, Linux(or Web). If it's very cool, one of them is OK too, Android is preferable in this situation. Necessary features: Russian or English language Possibility to mark task as finished Interesting features: (I want as more, as possible, while it's OK, if some of them isn't avaliable) Nice and easy-to-use interface Possibility to choose finish time for task. After that it's showed as overdue. Possibility to choose start time for task. Before it task is inactive and maybe shown or hide Possibility to add nested tasks. Task marks completed when all sub-tasks are completed. Possibility to make dependencies. If A depends on B, and B isn't finished yet, A is inactive as in third feature. Possibility to create task in a moment without fill-all-this-forms Syncronization between version(Android to linux or Android to web) Notification (on Android only) Features, that I'm not interested in: Creating more than one todo list sharing ToDo's I've seen couple of managers. Best I've seen now is Task Coach for Linux, but I don't very like its interface, and there is no version for Android.

• Checking that tasks are executed

  I'm not sure how to explain this. Once one starts having dozens or hundres of servers, each running some sort of periodic jobs (mostly from cron), there is a problem of making sure (or as sure as possible) that these tasks are actually ran. I mean, I get an email if a job fails fails, and no mail if it succeeds, but also no mail if it doesn't run for whatever reason. Sure, I could change them and have them send a "successfully ran" email, only to be flooded by mails that most of the time I don't want to see. Basically, I want to be notified only if: a task ran and failed a task didn't run at the expected time. Is there a way to do this?

• Nightly backups (and maybe other tasks) causing server alerts

  I have two independent alert notification systems for my servers. The server is a virtual machine on Linode and one of the alerts comes from Linode. The other monitoring system we use is New Relic. They are both watching out for IO utilization. Every night I get alerts from both of them as the server is using too much IO. I run quite a few tasks in the middle of the night but the one I confirmed that can cause IO-warnings is running the backups. The backup is done by s3cmd sync. I tried ionice but it still generates the warnings. Getting warnings every night reduces the efficacy of warnings when they happen for real. For Linode I could raise the level at which a warning is issued, but it might mean making the whole thing useless as the level is too high. What would be the proper solution for this?

  I'm using Versions for SVN. I attempt to commit and get this message: Commit failed (details follow): '/Users/mike/Sites/mysite.com/astss-cvsdude/Trunk/cart/flashfile.swf' is scheduled for addition, but is missing I suppose this is because I had added files to the repo, and then deleted them via the filesystem. I'd like to have it simply make note of my change, and apply the change to the repo. How can I get around this?

• VB6 app not executing as scheduled task unless user is logged on

  Hi Would greatly apprechiate some help on this one! It may be a tricky one. :) Problem I have an VB6 application which is set up as scheduled task. It starts every time, but when executing CreateObject it fails if user is not logged on to computer. I am looking for information on what could cause this. Primary suspicion is that some Windows API fails. Key points Behaviour confirmed on Windows 2000, 2003, 2008 and Vista. The application executes as user X at scheduled time, executed by Windows Task Scheduler. It executes every time. Application does start! -- If user X is logged on via RDP it runs perfectly. (Note that user doesn't need to be connected, only logged on) -- If user X is not logged on to computer the application fails. Failure point Application fails when using CreateObject() to instansiate a DCOM object which is also part of the application. The DCOM objects declare .dll-references at startup (globally/on top of .bas-file) and run a small startup function. Failure must be during startup, possibly in one of the .dll-declarations. Thoughts After some Googling my initial suspicion was directed at MAPI. From what I could see MAPI required user to be logged on. The application has MAPI references. But even with all MAPI references removed it still does not work. What is the difference if an user is logged on? Registry mapping? Environment? explorer.exe is running. Isn't the user logged on when application executes as the user? What info would help? A definitive answer would be truly great. Any information regarding any VB6 feature/Windows API that could act differently depending on wether user is logged on or not would definitively help. Similar experiences may lead me in the right direction. Tips on debuggin this. Thanks! :)

  Background Job gets mentioned a lot but all the tutorials I've seen seem to indicate that its for queuing jobs which are created by some external event such as a user clicking "Send mail". But what about when you have code that needs to scheduled to run every 30 seconds to listen for new messages from twitter? Normally rake is recommended for set in stone schedules but it inst so efficient for frequent jobs as it has to to load the entire rails app each time. Can anyone recommend anything for this situation?

I would like to use a batch script so that the system admins can easily modify it or reuse it on other directories when needed. The directory has files with multiple file extensions but the ones that need to be deleted end in .bkf and must be over 2 weeks old. • Problem with creation of scheduled task from IIS6 on SR2003

  Hi, I am writing a webapplication using .NET. The webapp creates scheduled tasks using the System.Diagnostics.Process class, calling SCHTASKS.EXE with parameters. I have changed the identity on the app pool, to a specific domain user. The domain-user is local administrator on all the four webservers. From webserver01 I am creating tasks on webserver01 to webserver04. It works perfect for 3-5 days, but then it breaks. It gives me the following errormessage in a messagebox: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application." If I have the system in the broken state, and I change the identity of the app pool to Domain administrator, it works. As I change it back to my domain-user, it breaks again. If I reboot the server, it works again for the same amount of days, but will break again. It seems like a permission-related problem. I just don't understand why it works sometimes, and sometimes doesn't. I hope someone outthere has seen this problem! Looking forward to hear from you! Kind regards, Morten, Denmark

  I am working on a couple of projects now where I really wish there was some sort of component that I could specify a time and date, and then execute some sort of method. DateTime date = new DateTime(x,x,x,x,x,x); ScheduledMethod sMethod = new ScheduledMethod(date, [method delegate of some sort]); \\at the specified date, sMethod invokes [method delegate of some sort] I know that I can do this with Windows Workflow Foundation as a long running process, which is good for certain things, but are there any alternatives? Workflow is not exactly straight forward with the details, and it would be nice to be able to deploy something more simple for light weight tasks. An example would be a method that checks a network folder once a day and deletes any files that are more than 30 days old. I realize that this may be pie in the sky dreaming, but this would be extremely useful for automating certain mundane maintinence tasks (scheduled sql operations, file system cleansing, routine email sending, etc.). It does not necessarily have to be .Net, but that is where I am coming from. Any ideas?
