• How to install vmware in Ubuntu 10.04

  I need to install minix3 in vmware. I m using ubuntu 10.04. i downlaoded vmware and now i am trying to install it using:-- sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` chmod +x VMware-Player*.bundle gksudo bash ./VMware-Player*.bundle VM Player Installer window popped up Clicked on the ‘Install’ button The progress bar started going; above the bar, it says that the installer is ‘Configuring’ This is was more than 15 minutes ago and still going. Nothing else is running on the system (consuming CPU, mem, …) Is the ‘Configuring’ step supposed to take this long? Seems to me it might be hung. Question: Did i do something wrong? Is there a log some place that can help me to debug this?

  Hi, I am looking for a free way of installing PowerChute for VMWare. The 2.2.3 and 2.2.4 Linux versions do not support VMWare ESX even though I think prior versions did. APC is now charging $100 for the install CD which I think is a joke considering the price of our Symmetra UPS. VMWare support should be free. Edit: I see someone voted this question to be closed, so to be clear i am looking for a free and legal way of getting PowerChute support for VMWare, by either using an older version or a custom script. Also for future reference if you are voting to close a questions please leave a comment explaining why.

• Trouble with installing VMWare-Player 3

  After downloading the VMware-Player 3 from the VMware-Site I wanted to install it; because I used an older VMware-Player the system wanted this to be deinstalled this version first. After starting the deinstallation I had trouble with my machine - shutdown - now I have no proper deinstallation of the older VMware-Player and everytime, I want to install the 3.0, I get an error-message. Is there any possibility, to clean up the rest of the older installation (3-4 processes are still active or are starting again, when I try to close them and therefore I can't delete different .dll-files by hand)? Thanks for your help!

I can ping boxes on the network by ip address, but just not resolve DNS.   I have a Ubuntu 12.04 server running under VMWare. As best as I can tell, the VMWare vmbk file has been corrupted. The server is operating normally, but this is preventing backups (using Veeam). To remedy this, I'd like to create a duplicate VM without the corruption issue. However, with the corrupted file VMWare can't help me, eg. create a simple clone. I can create a new VM. How do I clone the configuration / data from my problematic server into the new one? Updated: just to clarify: I realise I can't use the VMWare clone tools. I will manually create a new VM (with a base O/S if necessary). How to I replicate the O/S and data from one VM into another?

• VMware server 2.0 SYN/ACK repeating issues

  VMWare Server 2.0.0 Build 122956 I am having some issues with connecting into a guest VM (Ubuntu linux 4.4.3-4 lucid) running under VMware 2.0 on a windows server host. All connections to and from the VM's work fine, except for FTP. I thought the issue was the FTP daemon at first but it has been ruled out that it is not the daemon or the server itself. When you try to connect to the FTP server from outside of the host OS it fails with a "421 Service not available" but when you try and connect from the local VM or from the host OS the connection goes through fine. I have ran many packet sniffs using wireshark/tcpdump from the VM, the host OS, and the client connecting, the most informative is the host OS. I have attached a PNG of the relavant packets that were captured. I viewed some other network traffic that was sniffed (WWW specifically) and it seems to do the same syn/ack repeating but the user doesnt see any issues. I have disabled the firewall and the issues persisits, I have tried with specific allow rules to ensure the data is allowed and no changes. It appears like VMware attempts to do the ICMP redirect and it works, but then it vmware repeats the packets sent so you get 3 syn/ack's for every one syn from the client. Also VMWare appears to be attempting to establish an FTP connection between the HOST OS and the GUEST OS, because I see the second SYN sent from the HOST OS to the GUEST to initiate a new connection, and it get the appropriate SYN/ACK followed by an ACK, but the client never sees any of this from its end. EG. syn from client syn/ack from host OS to client syn/ack from guest OS to client syn/ack from host OS to client The same thing happens when the connection reset is attempted, RST's start being sent and repeated, the server responds with a valid header to continue the FTP handshake but the RST acknowledgement is allready issued and things are closed. I am not 100% if this is a bug in VMware or possibly a VMNetwork missconfiguration. Does anyone have any thoughts on where exactly the issue could be, things to try to verify or rule out? • Windows 8.1 in a VMWare Workstation 10 guest's mouse is missing, but only sometimes

  I have VMWare Workstation 10 running on a Windows 7 machine, hosting a k guest OS. Before upgrading to WS 10 I was using version 9, and the Win8 guest OS ran without difficulty or error conditions. Since upgrading and installing the most current VMWare Tools inside the guest after upgrading to version 10, there are circumstances where the mouse pointer is not visible; the mouse position appears stuck at a screen location which is not the center of the virtualized display; and mouse click and scrolling events still get processed. Once this begins happening I have to reboot the host machine to get it to stop. (VMWare Tools 9.6.1 build-1378637 is what the WS 10 software installed) The problem seems to correlate with whether the mouse is captured during Win 8.1's bootup process, before control is passed to the login screen. If I explicitly click the mouse into the guest OS and move it slowly around while the system is booting, then I see the mouse after clicking to lift the first screen and expose the password prompt, and there is never a problem within the guest. If I don't do this during bootup, there is no mouse pointer, with the symptoms listed above. I have tried removing and reinstalling VMWare tools, and the other steps published for "mouse problems" from VMWare's chaotic troubleshooting database. The problem persists. Is there a setting in the virtual machine's configuration which could prevent this behavior?

  I have VMware on my Mac and it crashed. I am unable to access the files used by the VMware. So I downloaded VirtualBox and when I try to add the .vmwarevm file to VirtualBox it says that its unable to read that type. I wasn't sure if there was a way i can get to these files as they are extremely important. I can not shutdown or open my virtual state in VMware whatsoever. Thoughts?

• VMware Server 2.0 in Linux loads a blank screen at the login page

  I'm using VMware Server 2.0.1-156745.i386 for Linux on Ubuntu 8.10. When I run "vmware", it brings up what is supposed to be the login page in a browser, but it just loads a blank page. This is the address: https://127.0.0.1:8333/ui/ Sometimes the login page comes back if you reload it a bunch of times, but this time it won't. Doing this also doesn't help: /etc/init.d/vmware restart Does anyone know why this happens, and how to fix it?

  I am using VMware Workstation version 7 on Ubuntu 10.10. I installed Windows XP service pack 3 for guest os. Within VMWare, I am using bridge connection that I assigned static IP address to be able to ping host IP address but I cannot ping default router gateway. I also tried to command "/etc/init.d/vmware start" on terminal. All tasks are able to start successfully except "VM communication interface socket family" I am not sure that how to setup network for my VMWare by using wireless. Thanks in advance.

  I'm just doing a VMWare Workstation 8 installation. However, on trying to boot (or create) a VM, it's reporting "Could not get vmx86 driver version: The handle is invalid." It recommends reinstalling, which I've done. Also, VMWare Player just hangs. Was going to post on the VMWare forums, but can't seem to create a new discussion (even though I've registered/logged in). It's our own fault for being too eager to upgrade, I guess.

  I just converted a physical Windows XP x64 machine with 4 CPUs to a VMWare virtual machine with 4CPUs (on a ESX server) using the VMWare Standalone Converter. Everything worked just great, except that the OS now seems to use only 2 CPUs (when 4 are installed, see the following image). This must be a Windows XP issue rather than a VMWare issue, but I can not really rule out any reason at this stage. What can I do?

• Using GPO to collect data about VMware view activity

  Our security group wants us to begin logging data for external access to our view enviroment. At first we thought that view security would be logging all source ip's that are external in nature so if for some reason there is an intrusion we would have record of it there. Of course our firewall logs all that information but correlating it to view is sketchy at best with our current implementation. We know on viewdesktops there is a set of keys in VolitateEnviroment that contains stuff such as source ip and username, etc. We have a script in place that, when run as a logon script attached to a user account in AD collects the information as we need it. If we have a GPO run the same script the information does not get collected. We feel like there is a piece of the puzzle we're missing but we don't know what. If anyone knows what we're forgetting or misconfiguring that would be great, or if you have a better way of us collecting external source ip's for view specifically we'd be interested in that as well. • VMWare Player disrupting Samba on Ubuntu 9.04 host?

  I've had Ubuntu 9.04 running on this computer for a while now. I just installed VMWare Player on my system and now when I try to browse the network in the Ubuntu host all the computers will show up one time only. If I try to browse again, no computers appear and even the workgroup is missing. I have to run: sudo /etc/init.d/vmware stop sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart to get the network visable again. As long as VMWare Player is stopped Samba seems fine. I guess it's got to do with the virtual adaptors that VMWare installs. Is there a way to get them both to work, or did I just miss-configure something?

I asked my datacenter to install the free version (VMware ESXi 4.1) but apparently it did not recognize 3TB disks. Now I'm wondering whether VMWare 5 can handle 3TB disks, and if so, what variant?   I have a Windows 7 x64 guest that acts very strange - the VM is very slow and taskmgr will consume 50% (with 2 cores) or up to 99% (single) of the CPU when everything else is idle. Host is Windows 7 x64 with VMware Workstation 7.0.1 VMware tools are installed the same VM, when running on another PC with VMware Server 2.0 will work OK (CPU at ~0% when idle) I've tried (with no effects) enabled/disabled 3d selected 1 or 2 cores adjusted memory (1gb/500mb) adjusted the bios mem.hotadd = "FALSE" disabled page trimming Windows 7 x86 guests on the same machine do not have this problem.

I have VMware 8.01 installed on Ubuntu 11.10. The guest I am trying is also Ubuntu 11.10. I manually installed vmware-tools and it went well, except the X-config part was skipped as it said the distribution driver is used. The guest runs well but it seems fall back to 2D mode. • How do I allow a standard user to update the kernel modules for VMware?

  I've set up VMWare Player for my wife. Every once in a while (notably after a kernel update), the VMWare Player needs to be compiled into the kernel. My spouse does not have su- activated (if anybody screws up the OS, it's going to be me). I'd like to give her permission to do this, but only for that program. Is this possible? Can it be done safely (for the OS)? How can it be done? Edit: I tried to add the following to visudo guijunkette ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/vmware-modconfig When running with her user, after typing her password, the following error occurred: So, in the end, no cigar.   Dear al, I found out that my VM is running with a snapshot which is not visible in the snapshot manager. I found out also that the machine is running on a delta file (probably an old snaphot) I see there are procedures to consolidate snapshots but what i want to understand now is : Having a VMDK-flat disk of 50gb =which is actually the vdisk created at the beginning Now i have a DELTA file of 38 gb...and this file it is growing on daily basis. My question is : why the delta file is growing ? is that normal ? Please let me know what is behind.

• Virtual machine lost after power cut

  We have just had a power issue and our ESX (ESXi 4.1.0) host lost power and then rebooted. All but one of the virtual servers have rebooted with no problem, however one of them refused to power up. I try to power it on and I get the following error: File <unspecified filename> was not found Reason: The system cannot find the file specified. Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/4e03076e-90834647-b846-001185c38f42/LAMP- Stack/turnkey-lamp-11.3-lucid-x86.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. VMware ESX cannot find the virtual disk "/vmfs/volumes/4e03076e-90834647-b846- 001185c38f42/LAMP-Stack/turnkey-lamp-11.3-lucid-x86.vmdk". Verify the path is valid and try again. I have logged into the ESX host to see if the file is there an have found only the following file that matches the filename: /vmfs/volumes/4e03076e-90834647-b846-001185c38f42/LAMP-Stack/turnkey-lamp-11.3-l ucid-x86-s001.vmdk I notice that the above file has '-s001' after the filename. Is this recoverable? Any help of advice is greatly appreciated! EDIT: Running ls -l on the directory that contains the file shows this: drwxr-xr-t 1 root root 1680 Feb 9 09:49 4e03076e-90834647-b846-001185c38f42 The databrowser file system looks like this: and in a different directory there is the file that matches the missing one:

• Is there a way to import or convert vmware player images to run on xen?

  It's fairly popular for companies offering a quick way to test their product to give you a vmware player image. I don't run VMWare though, I run Xen exclusively. Most of these images (and the one I'm interested right this moment particularly) are linux images. Is there a way to use this image with Xen? Obviously, I could setup player long enough to boot the image, then move the data out of the image to a Xen image, but I'm hoping for something easier and quicker than that...preferably that doesn't require setting up a box to run player than can run this image.

• Update kernel patch for VMware Player 4.0.3

  As I stated some days ago, after upgrading to Ubuntu Precise Pangolin, aka 12.04 LTS, I had a minor obstacle with VMware products. Today, VMware offered to upgrade to Player 4.0.3 due to security-related reasons. Initially, I thought that this update might have the patch for kernel 3.2.0 integrated but sadly that is not the case. 'Hacking' the kernel patch My first intuitive try to run the existing patch against the sources of VMware Player 4.0.3 failed, as the patch by Stefano Angeleri (weltall) is originally written explicitely against Workstation 8.0.2 and Player 4.0.2. But this is nothing to worry about seriously. Just fire up your favourite editor of choice and modify the version signature for VMware Player, like so: nano patch-modules_3.2.0.sh And update line 8 for the new version: plreqver=4.0.3 Save the shell script and run it as super-user (root): sudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh In case that you previously patched your VMware sources you have to remove some artifacts beforehand. Otherwise, the patch script will inform you like so: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting In that case, simply remove the 'hidden' file and run the shell script again: sudo rm /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patchedsudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh To finalise your installation either restart the vmware service or reboot your machine. On first start VMware will present you their EULA which you have to accept, and everything gets back to normal operation mode. Currently, I would assume that in case of VMware Workstation 8.0.3 you can follow the same steps as just described.

• Some guest networking and VMware Tools functionality broken with Sprint SmartView on the host

  Using VMware Workstation 6.5.3 on Vista 64-bit. I started having problems with VMware networking about 6 months ago after upgrades to Sprint SmartView. I did not have problems previously, but I don't know if that is because I was lucky. The main symptoms of the problem when SmartView is installed are: I can no longer drag files from the host to copy them to the guest. When they are dragged, the disallowed cursor (the circle with a slash) shows in the guest. If I try to enable shared folders in the guest while it is running, I will not be able to see the shared files and will be informed that networking is not working. I can still ping guests from the host and I can still access network services via NAT most of the time when connected via my USB broadband adapter. When I configure shared folders so they are "always enabled" (with a mapped drive), I can access files on the via the mapped folders. I can also copy the file on the host and then paste it in the guest, as was suggested in some other threads concerning drag-and-drop problems that I found. The VMware Tools icon is showing in all cases and I don't see any obvious errors in the host's event viewer. If I uninstall SmartView, the problems disappear. If SmartView (current version is 2.28.0082) is reinstalled I will experience the same problems. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling VMware and SmartView in various ways but it appears tha these problems are consistent when SmartView is installed (not just when it is running or connected, but when it is present on the system). I'm wondering if this is a combination of software (WS 6.5.3, Vista64, and SmartView) that works for other people, which would indicate a problem that is peculiar to my configuration.
