• KISS: Simple C# application which communicates with a RESTful web service.

  Following the KISS principle, I suddenly realised the following: In .NET, you can use the Entity Model Framework to wrap around a database. This model can be exposed as a web service through WCF. This web service would have a very standardized definition. A client application could be created which could consume any such RESTful web service. I don't want to re-invent the wheel and it wouldn't surprise me if someone has already done this, so my question is simple: Has anyone already created a simple (desktop, not web) client application that can consume a RESTful service that's based on the Entity Framework and which will allow the user to read and write data directly to this service? Otherwise, I'll just have to "invent" this myself. :-)Problem is, the database layer and RESTful service is already finished. The RESTful service will only stay in the project during it's development phase, since we can use the database-layer assembly directly from the web applications that are build around it. When the web application is deployed, the RESTful services are just kept out of the deployment. But the database has a lot of data to manage over nearly 50 tables. When developing against a local database, we can have straight access to the database so I wouldn't need this tool for this. When it's deployed, the web application would be the only way to access the data so I could not use this tool. But we're also having a test phase where the database is stored on another system outside the local domain and this database is not available for developers. Only administrators have direct access to this database, making tests a bit more complex. However, through the RESTful service, I can still access the data directly. Thus, when some test goes wrong, I can repair the data through this connection or just create a copy of the data for tests on my local system. There's plenty of other functionality and it's even possible to just open the URL to a table service straight in Excel or XMLSpy to see the contents. But when I want to write something back, I have to write special code to do just that. A generic tool that would allow me to access the data and modify it would be easier. Since it's a generic setup around the ADO.NET Data services, this should be reasonable easy too. Thus, I can do it but hoped someone else has already done something similar. But it appears that there's no such tool made yet...

• How does one calculate CPU utilization programmatically ?

  Hi, I have a benchmarking program that calculates the time (in milliseconds and ticks), for a persistance to Entity Framework 4.0. Is there a way to calculate CPU load ? I am guessing that I would need to query Windows to find out my CPU frequency, how many cores, etc. Does this sound right ? If so, what part of the .NET framework relates to querying the system ? I am guessing System.Diagnostics ? Thanks, Scott

• Using Include() with inherited entities problem

  In EF eager loading related entities is easy. But I'm having difficulties including inherited entities when loading data using table-per-type model. This is my model: Entities: ArticleBase (base article entity) ArticleSpecial (inherited from ArticleBase) UserBase (base user entity) UserSpecial (inherited from UserBase) Image Relations are as shown on the image (omitting many columns): In reality my users are always of type UserSpecial, since UserBase is used in another application, thus we can share credentials. That's the only reason I have two separate tables. UserBase table can't be changed in any way shape or form, because the other app would break. Question How am I suppose to load ArticleSpecial with both CreatedBy and EditedBy set, so that both are of type UserSpecial (that defines Image relation)? I've tried (unsuccessfully though) these options: 1. Using lambda expressions: context.ArticleBases .OfType<ArticleSpecial>() .Include("UserCreated.Image") .Include("UserEdited.Image"); In this case the problem is that both CreatedBy and EditedBy are related to UserBase, that doesn't define Image navigation. So I should somehow cast these two to UserSpecial type like: context.ArticleBases .OfType<ArticleSpecial>() .Include("UserCreated<UserSpecial>.Image") .Include("UserEdited<UserSpecial>.Image"); But of course using generics in Include("UserCreated<UserSpecial>.Image") don't work. 2. I have tried using LINQ query var results = from articleSpecial in ctx.ArticleBase.OfType<ArticleSpecial>() join created in ctx.UserBase.OfType<UserSpecial>().Include("Image") on articleSpecial.UserCreated.Id equals created.Id join edited in ctx.UserBase.OfType<UserSpecial>().Include("Image") on articleSpecial.UserEdited.Id equals edited.Id select articleSpecial; In this case I'm only getting ArticleSpecial object instances without related properties being set. I know I should select those somehow, but I don't know how? Select part in my LINQ could be changed to something like select new { articleSpecial, articleSpecial.UserCreated, articleSpecial.UserEdited }; but images are still not loaded into my context. My joins in this case are barely used to filter out articleSpecial results, but they don't load entities into context (I suppose). Can anybody provide any help regarding this problem? I think it's not so uncommon.

  According to this section of the Hibernate documentation I should be able to query any java class in HQL http://docs.jboss.org/hibernate/core/3.3/reference/en/html/queryhql.html#queryhql-polymorphism Unfortunately when I run this query... "from Transaction trans where trans.envelopeId=:envelopeId" I get the message "Transaction is not mapped [from Transaction trans where trans.envelopeId=:envelopeId]". Transaction is an interface, I have to entity classes that implement it, I want on HQL query to return a Collection of type Transaction.

  I know it is rather heated question. But anyway I'd like to hear opinions of those in Stackoverflow. Given that XML support is quite good in SQL Server 2005/2008, and there's no concern about database independency, why one need Linq-to-SQL, Entity Framework, NHibernate and the likes, which are quite complex and awkward in advanced use-cases, if by using POCOs, XmlSerializer, and stored procedures which process XML, one can achieve a lot less complex middle-tier?   Iam implementing entity spaces in C# application and was able to execute queries such as the below one successfully. coll.query.where(coll.prodlineid.equal("id") if( coll.query.load()) However I need to replace all these queries in the code with Stored procedures. For this I used: coll.Load(esQuerytype.storedprocedure, "testproc", param) At this point, Iam getting error as 'EntitySpaces.Core.esEntityCollection.Load(EntitySpaces.DynamicQuery.esQueryType, string, params object[])' is inaccessible due to its protection level esEntityCollection is a metadata file, so I could not change the access modifier there from protected to public. Help:-)

  My Table: [LocationId] [Address] [ZipCode] When I show a list of Location's, I also want to show the distance from a given zip code. In Asp.Net Web Forms I had a stored procedure that would return the distance and I would call this SP on ItemDataBound on my GridView. Or, I also would have my SP that is returning the Location list add another column ([Distance]) which I could display in my GridView. How would you do this using Entity Framework and Asp.Net Mvc 2?

  Hey, I made several tables and relationships using SQL server manager. I then imported them to visual studio and it all appeared in the correct form, except one of the relationships did not appear. I have checked everything I could think of and it is the exact same as the other relationships. If you know anything I can check, I would appreciate it.   I'm using Entity Framework for a new project (VS 2008, .net 3.5 sp1) and "reasonably happy" with it, especially compared to dataset-based solutions. One of recurring annoyances is "Could not find file CodeGenerationSchema.xsd" exception during application startup. Exception seems to re-appear rather frequently after changes to the model. Googling gives temporary and strange workarounds for this error: Delete .suo file, or Set Options Debugging General Enable Just My Code = On May be someone have more permanent, straightforward fix or can explain the reason of this issue.

  Maybe I should back-up and widen the scope before diving into the title question... I'm currently writing a web app in ASP.NET MVC 1.0 (although I do have MVC 2.0 installed on my PC, so I'm not exactly restricted to 1.0) -- I've started with the standard MVC project which has your basic "Welcome to ASP.NET MVC" and shows both the [Home] tab and [About] tab in the upper-right corner. Pretty standard, right? I've added 4 new Controller classes, let's call them "Astronomer", "Biologist", "Chemist", and "Physicist". Attached to each new controller class is the [Authorize] attribute. For example, for the BiologistController.cs [Authorize(Roles = "Biologist,Admin")] public class BiologistController : Controller { public ActionResult Index() { return View(); } } These [Authorize] tags naturally limit which user can access different controllers depending on Roles, but I want to dynamically build a Menu at the top of my website in the Site.Master Page based on the Roles the user is a part of. So for example, if JoeUser was a member of Roles "Astronomer" and "Physicist", the navigation menu would say: [Home] [Astronomer] [Physicist] [About] And naturally, it would not list links to "Biologist" or "Chemist" controller Index page. Or if "JohnAdmin" was a member of Role "Admin", links to all 4 controllers would show up in the navigation bar. Ok, you prolly get the idea... Starting with the answer from this StackOverflow topic about Dynamic Menu building in ASP.NET, I'm trying to understand how I would fully implement this. (I'm a newbie and need a little more guidance, so please bare with me.) The answer proposes Extending the Controller class (call it "ExtController") and then have each new WhateverController inherit from ExtController. My conclusion is that I would need to use Reflection in this ExtController Constructor to determine which Classes and Methods have [Authorize] attributes attached to them to determine the Roles. Then using a Static Dictionary, store the Roles and Controllers/Methods in key-value pairs. I imagine it something like this: public class ExtController : Controller { protected static Dictionary<Type,List<string>> ControllerRolesDictionary; protected override void OnActionExecuted(ActionExecutedContext filterContext) { // build list of menu items based on user's permissions, and add it to ViewData IEnumerable<MenuItem> menu = BuildMenu(); ViewData["Menu"] = menu; } private IEnumerable<MenuItem> BuildMenu() { // Code to build a menu SomeRoleProvider rp = new SomeRoleProvider(); foreach (var role in rp.GetRolesForUser(HttpContext.User.Identity.Name)) { } } public ExtController() { // Use this.GetType() to determine if this Controller is already in the Dictionary if (!ControllerRolesDictionary.ContainsKey(this.GetType())) { // If not, use Reflection to add List of Roles to Dictionary // associating with Controller } } } Is this doable? • Why can one null return be tested but another throws an exception?

  I want to test if an xml attribute is present. Given this: XmlAttributeCollection PG_attrColl = SomeNodeorAnother.Attributes; This first test works: if (null != PG_attrColl["SomeAttribute"]) "GetNamedItem" is supposed to return null, but the following test throws an exception complaining about the null it returns. if (null != PG_attrColl.GetNamedItem("SomeAttribute").Value;) Why the difference? Just curious.

• Upgrading From EF 4x to 6 breaks everything

  Attempted to upgrade my project from EF4 to EF6, I get build errors It appears that if i swap out the namespaces manually to include the entity.core it works, but if i change the .edmx file at all, the code reverts back to the old references and i have to manually edit the code generation files to include the update namespace references. I have attempted to "add code generation item" that does not resolve the issue at all. When i open the .edmx file in the IDE it shows me everything correctly.
