  Hello. How can I query RowNumber with Entity Framework? For example: var result = data.Users .OrderByDescending("Birthday") .ThenBy("LastName") .ThenBy("FirstName") .Select(u => { RowNumber = ???, u.FirstName, u.LastName }); I want to implement paging for my grid, but I cannot solve problem with finding page with needed user. I'm using EF4.0. Select method with index(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vcsharp/aa336758.aspx#SelectIndexed) not works with EF. May be there is another way to implement this?

• Is EF4 "Code Only" ready for production use?

  I've been looking at the new Entity Framework 4 Code Only features, and I really like them. But I'm having a hard time finding good resource on the feature. Everything seems to be spread around blongs here and there, so this make me wonder if it's ready to be used for a serious project? What do you think? Is it ready for production use or should I use the more traditional approach (EDMX designer, POCO objects)? Also, I would like to know if there are any features that Code Only does not support yet, compared to the EDMX designer? What do you think about the Code Only feature? Is it "mature" yet? Thank you.

• Manipulating individual rows of a datagrid

  Hey, recently I started working on a webpage that has a datagrid. I understand how to add datasources and that sort of thing, or at least I am starting to get it. But my question is about manipulating individual rows or cells. Is that only possible during the databind event handler, that is the only place I have been able to do it so far. I am sure there is a more abstract way of doing the things I want to do, but there are times where I just want to say Datagrid.add(row). I mean, if the datagrid is made up of a certain object type, can I make a new object of that type and just chuck it on the end? I am still new to this stuff, so perhaps what I want to do would defeat the purpose of this added abstraction, but figured I would ask around. Thanks for any advice, tips, or tricks people feel like sharing. Edit: for clarification I am using c#, entity framework, asp.net, and an SQL database.

How comes the output of this code is: [0] [0, 1] [0, 1, 2] [0, 1, 2, 3] [0, 1, 2, 3, 4] ? If i switch obj = intlist() with obj = intlist(l=[]) I get the desired output [0] [1] [2] [3] [4] Why this happens? Thanks

I read that I could create them like this: myElement = (Element *)[NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName:@"Element" inManagedObjectContext:managedObjectContext]; And right after that remove them: [managedObjectContext deleteObject:myElement]; then I can use my elements: myElement.property1 = @"Hello"; This works pretty well even though I think this is probably not the most optimal way to do it... Then I try to use it in my UITableView... the problem is that the object get released after the initialization. My table becomes empty when I move it! Thanks edit: I've also tried to copy the element ([myElement copy]) but I get an error...

  Im working a bit with MVC. I need to know something about roles when using the same controller for several users getting and showing pictures. I need to show pictures, but sometimes these pictures should only be shown for those who created them. So now when using the Authorize attribute and if picture and username match thrue my databse I could ofcause use this to make a match. I could ofcause make a match method in the controller. [Authorize] controllGetPicture(Picture ID){ getSomepicture.. return picture } DB relations Relations [User] <- [Pictures] ID FK_UserID Im thinking about just getting the User ID and compare with the Picture FK_UserId at the picture but I think it could be smarter. • Why do a small amount of add/deletes take several seconds in EF4?

  Using the Entity Framework 4. I have created a Code First database in the past and a piece of code needs to delete and add 16 objects, this takes 6 seconds each. That's 300+ ms for each query! The deletes/adds occur in a foreach scope and there is a SaveChanges() outside the foreach. In the above image you see that each takes 6 seconds, which is 34% of the time, for 16 calls. That doesn't sound normal to me... Why is this and how can I improve the performance? If there is no solution: Are there any workarounds I can use? It would be a pain to rewrite my project...

If I generated my Model from the Database using VS2010 EF4 Entity Data Model (edmx and it's cs class), And I want to add attributes on some of the entities. what would be the best practice ? how should I cope with updating the model (adding more fields / tables to the database and merging them into the edmx) - will it keep my attributes or generate a new cs file erasing everything ? (Manual changes to this file may cause unexpected behavior in your application.) (Manual changes to this file will be overwritten if the code is regenerated.)

  I have a many-to-many relationship: Application - Applications_Servers - Server This is set up in my Entity Data Model and all is well. My problem is that I'd like to eager-load the whole graph of Applications so that I have an IEnumerable<Applications>, each Application member populated with the Servers collection associated by the many-to-many relationship. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but according to my research there must be a navigation property between Application and Server. This is not the case for me because my Applications_Servers join table has more in it than just the two keys. Therefore, there is no navigation property directly between Application and Server, and this doesn't work: var apps = (from a in context.Application.Include("Server") select a).ToList(); I get an error saying there is no navigation property on Application called "Server", and that's correct, there is none. How do I write the query to eager-load my Applications with their Servers in this case?

• SQL Server 2008 EF 4 - limiting database records returned using permissions?

  In our database all tables are linked back to a single table. This table has a bit column to limit whether the record is displayed. Currently the records are filtered on the code side of the website. Is there any way to set up permission so that userA would never see any record in the database where that common bit column was set to true? We are using SQL Server 2008. Alternatively we are also using entity framework 4.0 in .net 4 (in c#) if you have any ideas how it might be accomplished there? Thanks for your feedback.

• How to speed up saving data to database over the internet?

  I am using C#, Entity Framework and SQL Server 2008 Express. I am connected to the database over the internet. What is the best method to speed up saving/updating data to database? It takes 87 seconds to save 180 records to the database. It takes only 3.5 seconds to save the same number of records to local (on the same machine) SQL Server. For every record that I save/update I check if record with this primary key exists in the database, if it doesn't exists I simply save it, if it exists I update it using ObjectContext.ApplyCurrentValues(entitySetName, currentEntity) method.

• Info on Seam's EntityQuery?

  I've been working with Seam and JPA/Hibernate for quite some time, but have just started looking at making use of the EntityHome and EntityQuery classes more. EntityHome seems relatively straightforward in terms of what it is and how I can leverage it. But, EntityQuery is a bit less clear. I understand the ability to grab, for example, a list containing all of a given entity. However, I've also seen some examples using a RESTRICTIONS array. How exactly is this used? Are the OR conditions or AND conditions? Can anyone give me some more detailed information as to how EntityQuery is intended to be used? I've checked the few books I have on Seam and JPA, but none of them really reference the EntityQuery classes. It seems like I very useful mechanism, and I'd like to get some more use out of them if I can. Thanks!

  Using MVVM and EF...I have a datagrid binding to a View Model (using ObservableCollection). The view model has a save command which simply calls the SaveChanges command of the Data Context. However, when a user adds a new row to the datagrid, the new entity is detached. Is there any easy way to automatically attach it when it gets created. • Show data relationship in gridview with dropdownlist or similar?

  I have data coming from two tables with a foreign key relationship - one User table containing users of the web application, and one Page table containing details about pages visited by each user. I would like to be able to view these data in a gridview or the like on a page. It's easy enough to just show the User table data like so (I'm using the Entity Framework and LINQ): UserDBEntities context = new UserDBEntities(); GridView1.DataSource = from user in context.UserSet select new { user.Ip, user.Count, user.Description, user.Referer }; GridView1.DataBind(); But how can I show the Page details? I'm not bent on any particular way of showing it, but the only idea I've been able to come up with is to have a dropdown list for each user in a column. But I can't figure out how to get the page data into such a dropdown list. The tables are associated with the primary/foreign key UserID. Any ideas would be welcome (dropdownlist solution or other)!

  I am just getting started with LINQ. I am creating an Entity Framework app that uses the canonical Post and Tag model. A Post contains an ID, Text, and Tags, and a Tag contains an ID, a Name, and Posts. A previous thread on StackOverflow showed me how to query for a Post that matches all Tag objects (A and B and C) in a search list. But how would I query for a Post that matches any Tag (A or B or C) in the list? Thanks for your help.

  I have the three following lines and the first two line gets all the images on the document and hides all, but then when I add the third line shows all the images.   I have the absolutely most simple setup imaginable. A single table defined in an Entity model in ASP.net v4, the model is bound directly to a GridView with AutoGenerateEditButton enabled. However, each time I hit edit, then save, the page throws the error “Update is disabled for this control" for which I cannot find a solution. What is causing this error?   Hello I've been using enity framework that came with 3.5sp. And now I've redone things for enityframework 4 and asp.net mvc 2. I've come across something (which worked in my previous version and asp.net mvc 1.0). I have this: public IQueryable<Booking> GetBookings() { return from b in _entities.Bookings.Include("BookingObject") select b; } And in my controller I have: return View("Index", new BookingsViewModel { Bookings = _br.GetBookings().ByDay(DateTime.Today) }); And it doesnt seem to include the "BookingObject"-entity, so I can type like <%= Model.Bookings.BookingObject.BookingObjectName %> in my view. What might be missing here? Do I need to turn something on in the diagram for it to include entities or? /M
