  • CDPATH in windows command prompt?

    - by barlop
The accepted answer of this question Fast Ways of Cd'ing on *nix? mentions bash having CDPATH is there an equivalent in windows? so from any directory e.g. c:\windows I could do c:\windowscd compbar* and it'd take me to m:\a\b\c\d\e\compbar what if there are many compbar directories? well, the CDPATH solution is one solution, I suppose you order them it'd search through the CDPATH environment variable and choose the first. I'd like that for windows.

  • Need hard disk recommendation for linux home server.

    - by neotracker
Hello, I'm planing to build a little linux homeserver. It will mainly be used for storage and maybe as an media pc. I plan to build a software raid5 with 4 1.5TB or 2TB hard drives. I already decided to use the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive, but then I read about some problems with the WD green series about many drives failing and that they are not recommended for raid anyway. Of course, I couldn't find much facts on the issues so I thought I just ask here ;-) What hard drives would you recommended for a software raid5 setup? As I only need it for storage, the whole thing doesn't have to be too fast. So I prefer a cheap price and silence to great performance.

  • Understanding connection tracking in iptables

    - by Matt
I'm after some clarification of the state/connection tracking in iptables. What is the difference between these rules? iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -m conntrack --ctstate ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT Is connection tracking turned on when a packet is first matched containing -m state --state BLA , or is connection tracking always on? Can/Should connection state be used for fast matching like below? e.g. suppose this is some sort of router/firewall (no nat). # Default DROP policy iptables -P INPUT DROP iptables -P OUTPUT DROP iptables -P FORWARD DROP # Drop invalid iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state INVALID -j DROP # Accept established, related connections iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT # Allow ssh through, track connection iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp --syn --dport 22 -m state --state NEW -j ACCEPT

  • Key modifiers affect remote VNC sessions in OS X

    - by Michael
I have two concurrent users of my MacBook: one local (with local peripherals) and one remote (connecting via VNC to a user kept logged in with fast user switching). As described here http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/52547-howto-simultaneous-user-environments-via-vnc.html That's working fine, except that when I hit modifier keys (e.g. shift, option, ...), I also affect the remote user. For example, if I hold down shift, the remote user's key strokes are capitalised, and if I hold down option, they get strange glyphs instead of the normal letters. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or how to fix it?

  • Google Bookmarks thinks I'm in Portugal

    - by Aeo
I was looking for a convenient way to keep links to web sites between multiple computers on Monday. After a bit of searching, I found out Google offers a service that covers my desires just fine, Google Bookmarks. Fast forward to today, Wednesday afternoon, I loaded up Google Bookmarks to find this: Sorry, I don't speak Portuguese. I cacheless-refreshed my gmail tab to make sure something wasn't up with my whole account, and it's fine. Hitting the translate button works... ...sort of. It works enough to at least know what's going on. I can work with this, but... It really seems backwards. How do I tell Google I don't understand Portuguese in my Bookmarks?

  • xinet vs iptables for port forwarding performance

    - by jamie.mccrindle
I have a requirement to run a Java based web server on port 80. The options are: Web proxy (apache, nginx etc.) xinet iptables setuid The baseline would be running the app using setuid but I'd prefer not to for security reasons. Apache is too slow and nginx doesn't support keep-alives so new connections are made for every proxied request. xinet is easy to set up but creates a new process for every request which I've seen cause problems in a high performance environment. The last option is port forwarding with iptables but I have no experience of how fast it is. Of course, the ideal solution would be to do this on a dedicated hardware firewall / load balancer but that's not an option at present.

  • How to control fan speed using SpeedFan?

    - by John Young
The CPU fan in my laptop is running too fast. I wish to control the speed manually to my preference, at times. Here is a CPU-Z screenshot of my laptop configuration: http://i.stack.imgur.com/1oST1.png And here is how SpeedFan window looks at my end: http://i.imgur.com/BIi0RdJ.jpg I have no idea how to use SpeedFan to control my laptop's CPU fan speed. How to configure it so that I can increase and decrease speed of the fan at my will? Edit: Sorry, the first image wasn't as intended, so I've corrected it now. Also, if someone can edit the post and embed the images in the post, that would be great. I need at least 10 reputation to successfully accomplish that.

  • Looking for internet traffic manager software for Windows 7

    - by Semyon Perepelitsa
I have 128 KB/s (1 Mbit/s) internet connection. Not quite fast for downloading big files, but it is okay for internet browsing. When I start big file dowload, I cannot surf the web normally: pages appears slowly, especially pictures there. Therefore I pause downloading, but I'm regularly spending much time on reading articles or leaving the computer alone, when I can allow the file being dowloaded. Is there any software that can automize the process of pausing and resuming download or simply automatically regulate internet speed for each application using Internet? I download files using different software and protocols (Download Master for http, ftp; uTorrent for torrents; many other programs for updating themselves), so I don't want to be tied to particular program for downloading.

  • Getting More Performance out of a MacBook Pro

    - by 5arx
So I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13". Integrated GPU so not a games machine but fast enough for doing .Net development in VMs. I love the little thing and wanted to give it a Christmas present so thought I'd mod it up a bit and give it a boost. I'm thinking of swapping out the stock 5400rpm HD with a faster hybrid drive (has 4GB RAM and spins at 7200rpm) but was wondering if any of you had tried or knew of anything else I could change/upgrade/mod to squeeze more out of my laptop. Before you answer though, please be aware that I'm not sure I can run to putting in the 8GB of RAM Apple have suggested :-( Thanks in advance.

  • DNS Resolver Speed Techniques

    - by Rob Olmos
I recently received a reply to my concerns about some DNS servers being slower than others despite all servers being anycast: In practice, most resolvers won't be impacted by the slower paths to some of the name servers in the set. Most resolvers employ various techniques to provide fast lookups, such as preferring name servers that were previously seen to be faster, sending simultaneous queries to multiple name servers, or pre-fetching queries before the TTL has expired. I was not aware that resolvers used these techniques and I was unsuccessful at searching for more info about this. Are there any names for these techniques? Which resolvers employ which of these techniques?

  • How to keep source frame rate with mencoder/ffmpeg?

    - by Sandra
I would like to crop and rotate a video, and then encode it to mp4 or mkv. mencoder video.mp4 -vf rotate=1,crop=720:1280:0:0 -oac pcm -ovc x264 -x264encopts preset=veryslow:tune=film:crf=15:frameref=15:fast_pskip=0:threads=auto -lavfopts format=matroska -o test.mkv But when I do the above encoding, the frame rate is way too fast. The encoding options were something I found, so I don't know if that is the problem. Question All I want is to crop and rotate the video, and keep the audio/video quality as good as possible. Have anyone tried this?

  • Snow Leopard - Dock icons randomly disappear

    - by lostInTransit
Snow Leopard works great! My mac's really fast after this. But sometimes the dock icons just disappear! I see the blue dot beneath when I click the empty space. So I know the item's there. But there are no icons! This happened for Safari and Downloads. Some people responded on the Apple forums that I should try and remove the dock's plist file. But this just restores the dock to its original settings! I don't want to lose my settings. Anyone else facing this issue with SL? Or is it a problem only I am facing? Thanks

I looked this up in Google and found talk about splitting, tunneling, routing tables, etc., but I'm not sure what/how to do it. Basically, I would like a persistent VPN connection with the office resources, and at the same time, utilize my home high speed internet connection to access the internet. Can someone help me the steps as how-to?

  • Is (Ubuntu) Linux file copying algorithm better than Windows 7?

    - by Sarath
Windows Copying is a real mess ever since Windows Vista. Even Microsoft claims they've improved the performance, from a user perspective, it's not quite visible. Even with single file the copying window appears too much time for 'Calculating' and then finishing the copy(Even after 100% completion some times the dialog remains active). At the same time, I was backing up some files in Ubuntu Linux. I felt it's really fast. Might be a feeling caused by faster UI updates. I read an informative post from Jeff Atwood few years back on Windows File Copying. but what my specific questions are Is (Ubuntu) Linux file performance is better than Windows-7? Are both algorithms, Windows and Linux is making use of multiple threads and pipelining mechanism to improve the speed? If yes, which one is better?

  • Standalone server setup for compute capacity

    - by mikera
I'm developing an application for my company that will require a lot of compute capacity (running some very big mathematical calculations), and looking for some form of server setup to do this. For various reasons, we want to run this on-site in our office rather than hosting it externally. It's been a while since I last had to set up my own servers so I thought I would tap into the collective wisdom of serverfault! My broad requirements are: Budget $30-50k, with an aim to get as much compute capacity as possible for that budget 64-bit servers suitable to run Ubuntu Linux + Java Some relatively standalone rack that can be installed in secure office space Fast/low latency network connections between the servers, but don't really care about connectivity to the outside world Storage capacity shared between the servers - they don't necessarily need their own storage providing they can be booted from a common image Downtime can be tolerated (since the calculations are run in batch mode) The software itself is fault-tolerant, so there is no need for extra resiliency in the server setup (cheap replaceable commodity parts will be fine in general) Given these requirements what kind of setup would you recommend and why?

  • JQuery form sticks with the ajax indicator on and won't submit

    - by Steven Buick
    Hi, I'm using JQuery 1.3 to validate and submit a form to a PHP page which JSON encodes a server response to display on the original form page. I've tried submitting the form without the JQuery part and everything seems to work fine but when I add JQuery it doesn't submit and constantly displays the ajax indicator. Here's my code: $(document).ready(function(){ var options = { target: '#messagebox', url: 'updateregistration.php', type:'POST', beforeSubmit: validatePassword, success: processJson, dataType: 'json' }; $("form:not(.filter) :input:visible:enabled:first").focus(); $("#webmailForm").validate({ errorLabelContainer: "#messagebox", rules: { forename: "required", surname: "required", currentpassword: "required", directemail: { required: true, email: true }, directtelephone: "required" }, messages: { forename: { required: "Please enter your forename" }, directemail: { required: "Please enter your direct e-mail address", email: "Your e-mail address does not appear to be valid(Example: [email protected])" }, surname: { required: "Please enter your surname" }, directtelephone: { required: "Please enter your direct telephone number" }, currentpassword: { required: "Please enter your current password" } } }); $('#webmailForm').submit(function() { $('#ajaxindicator').show(); $(this).ajaxSubmit(options); return false; }); }); function processJson(data) { $("#webmailForm").fadeOut("fast"); $("#messagebox").fadeIn("fast"); $("#messagebox").css({'background-image' : 'url(../images/messageboxbackgroundgreen.png)','border-color':'#009900','border-width':'1px','border-style':'solid'}); var forename=data.forename; var surname=data.surname; var directemail=data.directemail; var directphone=data.directphone; var dateofbirth=data.dateofbirth; var companyname=data.companyname; var fulladdress=data.fulladdress; var telephone=data.telephone; var fax=data.fax; var email=data.email; var website=data.website; var fsanumber=data.fsanumber; var membertype=data.membertype; var network=data.network; $("#messagebox").html('<h3>Registration Update successful!</h3>' + '<p><strong>Member Type:</strong> ' + membertype + '<br>' + '<strong>Forename:</strong> ' + forename + '<br><strong>Surname:</strong> ' + surname + '<br><strong>Direct E-mail:</strong> ' + directemail + '<br><strong>Direct Phone:</strong> ' + directphone + '<br><strong>Date of Birth:</strong> ' + dateofbirth + '<br><strong>Company:</strong> ' + companyname + '<br><strong>Address:</strong> ' + fulladdress + '<br><strong>Telephone:</strong> ' + telephone + '<br><strong>Fax:</strong> ' + fax + '<br><strong>E-mail:</strong> ' + email + '<br><strong>Website:</strong> ' + website + '<br><strong>FSA Number:</strong> ' + fsanumber + '<br><strong>Network:</strong> ' + network + '</p>'); $('#ajaxindicator').hide(); } function validatePassword(){ var clientpassword=$("#clientpassword").val(); var currentpassword=$("#currentpassword").val(); var currentpasswordmd5=hex_md5(currentpassword); if (currentpasswordmd5!=clientpassword){ $("#messagebox").html("You input the wrong current password, please try again."); $('#ajaxindicator').hide(); return false; } } I have a disabled textbox and some hidden ones.   • After installing updates, Windows 7 reboots when it gets to "Preparing to Configure"

    - by Travis
After letting Windows 7 Pro install updates at shutdown I now cannot get it to boot back up. I have tried selecting safemode, and "last known working configuration" and I get the same results. It gets to the screen and says "Preparing to configure Windows" and then reboots. If it is giving me a BSOD it is happening so fast I can not see it. This is a generic PC that has been running fine for the last year. It had 22 updates to do at shutdown. Windows 7 Pro Service Pack 1 64 bit in an Active Directory Domain.

  • Is paravirtualization evil?

    - by Daniel
I have an VMWare ESX Server v3.5 with a few virtualized Debian Lenny VMs (kernel 2.6.22 with vmi) running Apache Tomcat 5.5. I enabled paravirtualization, and Disk IO increased from about 240MB/s to 380MB/s, making me a happy admin. The problem now is that my apache tomcat becomes deadlocked during startup, running with 200% CPU (I have 2 CPUS assigned to the VM), and don't know how to get both: A stable system and a fast system. I somewhere heared that paravirtualization is legacy anyway and won't be available on newer ESX servers. Is there a replacement for this seemingly performance-improving option, or is it discontinued becauses it is just unstable? What is the state of paravirtualization? Should I ignore it completely? Thanks for all answers in advance.

  • Need an idiot-proof picture resizing program for Windows.

    - by marcusw
My friend needs to resize some pictures as part of a web publishing job, but he is rather clueless when it comes to computers. I am in charge of teaching him how to do this, but only have Linux (albeit with Wine installed) at my disposal for testing. Could you guys recommend a fast, easy, batch-capable, and hopefully open-source program that will resize pictures to the resolution he wants? It doesn't have to be anything fancy, but it needs to be quick and easy to use. Thanks!

  • Distribute Nagios to reduce false alarms

    - by GDR
I'm currently running a single Nagios instance. From time to time, I'm getting false alarms about timeouts - for example, it says that HTTP is down on some server, but when I open it in my browser several seconds later, it loads fast, and in general there is no trace of an error. What can I do to reduce such false alarms? I'm guessing that it's because of transient network issues on my monitoring server. I guess that setting up another monitoring server on a different network would greatly help, but how do I plug it into Nagios? Is it at all possible with Nagios or do I have to switch to another monitoring system? I like my configs and, if possible, I'd like to stay with Nagios or something compatible (Icinga?)

  • What's faster for web-server virtualization ? (virtualbox or KVM)

    - by marc
I have question, does anyone try to set up a webserver (debian) using virtualbox (x64) ? Right now i have few servers in KVM (x64) but i think it work slowly... Can i get something more (faster, performance) using virtualbox (x64)? On my home installation it looks very fast. Should i move to vbox against kvm ? I'm looking for answer from someone who have in virtualbox (x64) real server (can be headless) (debian/ubuntu) not windows xp or other home using things ;) I also got xp, 2k3, ubuntu in virtualbox (x86) and for me looking faster than kvm(x64). But it's hard to say anything without real tests done by multiple users not just one.
