  • Do you think its user unfriendly to show error message in tooltips ?

    - by msfanboy
Hello, when my user enters data validated as wrong a red circle with a white exclamation mark is shown in the right part of the textbox with the wrong data. The error message is only shown when the user hovers the textbox with wrong data. Do you think that is a bad User experience ? I could show the red error message text to the right side of the textboxes if there would still be space...

  • C# casting question: from IEnumerable to custom type

    - by Sarah Vessels
I have a custom class called Rows that implements IEnumerable<Row>. I often use LINQ queries on Rows instances: Rows rows = new Rows { row1, row2, row3 }; IEnumerable<Row> particularRows = rows.Where<Row>(row => condition); What I would like is to be able to do the following: Rows rows = new Rows { row1, row2, row3 }; Rows particularRows = (Rows)rows.Where<Row>(row => condition); However, I get a "System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'WhereEnumerableIterator1[NS.Row]' to type 'NS.Rows'". I do have a Rows constructor taking IEnumerable<Row>, so I could do: Rows rows = new Rows { row1, row2, row3 }; Rows particularRows = new Rows(rows.Where<Row>(row => condition)); This seems bulky, however, and I would love to be able to cast an IEnumerable<Row> to be a Rows since Rows implements IEnumerable<Row>. Any ideas?

  • Bash command that prints a message on stderr

    - by Salman A
I want to know if there is a built-in BASH command that prints some text on stderr, just like the echo command that prints text on stdout. I don't want to use temporary io-redirection. I use a built-in command to generate an error on stderr such as ls --asdf (ls: unrecognized option '--asdf') but I want something neater,

  • Shell Script Variable Quoting Problem

    - by apinstein
I have an sh script that contains the line $PHP_COMMAND -r 'echo get_include_path();' I can not edit this script, but I need the eventual command line to be (equivalent to) php -d include_path='/path/with spaces/dir' -r 'echo get_include_path();' How can I achieve this? Below is a script that demonstrates the problem. #!/bin/sh # shell script quoting problem demonstration # I need to be able to set a shell variable with a command with # some options, like so PHP_COMMAND="php -d 'include_path=/path/with spaces/dir'" # then use PHP_COMMAND to run something in another script, like this: $PHP_COMMAND -r 'echo get_include_path();' # the above fails when executed. However, if you copy/paste the output # from this line and run it in the CLI, it works! echo "$PHP_COMMAND -r 'echo get_include_path();'" php -d include_path='/path/with spaces/dir' -r 'echo get_include_path();' # what's going on? # this is also interesting echo "\n--------------------" # this works great, but only works if include_path doesn't need quoting PHP_COMMAND="php -d include_path=/path/to/dir" echo "$PHP_COMMAND -r 'echo get_include_path();'" $PHP_COMMAND -r 'echo get_include_path();' echo "\n--------------------" # this one doesn't when run in the sh script, but again if you copy/paste # the output it does work as expected. PHP_COMMAND="php -d 'include_path=/path/to/dir'" echo "$PHP_COMMAND -r 'echo get_include_path();'" $PHP_COMMAND -r 'echo get_include_path();' Script also available online: http://gist.github.com/276500

  • WPF Custom Navigation Buttons and calling one page from another

    - by Jeff
I have a window which contains a Frame which references a 'home' page that has buttons on it. When a button is clicked I want another page to show depending on which button was pressed. I attempted to use NavigationService.Navigate('mynextpage.xaml') and that works however, I want to use a customized navigation panel. I call this.ShowsNavigationUI = false; on my 'home' page but the bar still shows. Is there a way to accomplish what I am trying to do? My page with the frame is a window so I do not know how to disable the Navigation bar there where I guess it is coming from. Further testing shows that the ShowsNavigationUI property is false yet the nav bar shows itself in the parent window once there is a second page to go to (showing the 'home' page in the history. TIA

  • Why is good UI design so hard for some Developers?

    - by Chris Ballance
Some of us just have a hard time with the softer aspects of UI design (myself especially). Are "back-end coders" doomed to only design business logic and data layers? Is there something we can do to retrain our brain to be more effective at designing pleasing and useful presentation layers? Colleagues have recommended a few books me including The Design of Sites, Don't make me think and Why Software sucks , but I am wondering what others have done to remove their deficiencies in this area?

Thanks!

  • how to run few vim commands in a raw

    - by temujin.ya.ru
Hello. This is really noob question. There is set of vim commands : command1 : command2 etc., which I would neet to type in in a raw quite often. How to I make it automatic? It is simple regexp replace command set, however I cannot script those in sed, since it involves non-latin locales and for some reason vim handles non-latin regexps correctly, while sed not.

  • How can I get awk input from a file and add my own text to the data?

    - by xs2dhillon
Assume that I have a text file separated by colons. I understand how to display the entire text file or any specific column using awk. However, what I want to do is to get the awk output and then display it by adding my own text using a shell script? For example, assume that my text file is: England:London:GMT USA:Washington:EST France:Paris:GMT What I want to do is to display this input into the below format: COUNTRY: England CAPITOL: London TIMEZONE: GMT COUNTRY: USA CAPITOL: Washington TIMEZONE: EST COUNTRY: France CAPITOL: Paris TIMEZONE: GMT

  • Where are good examples of Web applications built for skilled and intense use?

    - by ProfK
I have spent most of my development career writing backend code, or front-end apps for used as daily business tools, by at least semi-skilled staff, e.g. order-tracking, sales capture, etc. That those I helped build peformed their tasks well is comfort enough, but I am still seeking excellence in the building of these kind of apps, versus the more trendy emphasis on slow and sensual interpersonal relationships with the UI. Can anyone recommend reading on this type of application (LOB?) on the web today? Any available examples to study?

  • Enter a letter when prompted by another command

    - by kij
Hi all, I'm trying to automate the installation and deployement of an application. To do it, i have a shell script with the following instructions: /usr/local/bin/amf install -u $1 -p $2 $localTarget where $1, $2 and $localTarget are options for the command named 'amf'. The problem is that the 'amf' command make severall instructions and ask the user to enter a letter during those instructions (to confirm the installation). At the moment, i can't bypass or modify the behaviour of the 'amf' command, so my question is: How can i catch this behaviour and/or automatically enter a letter in my script. This behaviour currently make my script not working, because the 'amf instal...' instruction is followed by another command to start my application. But as the install failed, the application can't start. Thanks in advance for your help. Best regards. Kij.

  • How to set PATH to another variable value with spaces in Windows batch file

    - by Evgeny
I've got a Windows batch script issue that I'm bashing my head against (no pun intended). The problematic script looks like this: if defined _OLD_VIRTUAL_PATH ( set PATH=%_OLD_VIRTUAL_PATH% ) When I run it and _OLD_VIRTUAL_PATH is set I get: \Microsoft was unexpected at this time. _OLD_VIRTUAL_PATH is a variable that was originally set from PATH and it contains spaces - I'm pretty sure that's the problem. But what's the solution? It runs successfully if I enclose it in quotes, but I don't think the entire value of the PATH variable is supposed to be in quotes.
