• Making file in user's homedir accessible from web/webserver

  Hi everybody, I have a txt-file one of my user's homedir which is regularly updated there by a script. I now want to be able to access (read) this file from the web. /home/user/folder/file.txt So what I tried now is to log in as root, go into my webservers httpdocs folder /var/www/path/to/domain/httpdocs and there I tried to create a symbolic link with ln -s /home/user/foler/file.txt /var/www/path/to/domain/httpdocs/file.txt But this didn't work... I already tried changing the chmod of the symlink (which changes the ones from the original file of course) and also a chown to the user from webserver, but no matter what I tried I cannot open the file from the web or from a php-script (which is what I want to do) Can anybody help me and tell me what I need to do? What rights do I need to give? Or is there another way of achieving this?

• Edit 100MB+ file

  I have captured some traffic with Wireshark and saved the result as a file. The file has 3 sections now: request headers response headers response body The response body is to become an flv file, but now everything is saved as a single file. So I need a way to delete the first two sections from the file, but the problem is that the file is very big (over a thousand mega bytes). I have tried to open it with gedit, but no matter how long I wait, gedit hangs and remains unresponsive until I kill it. What tool can I use to edit this big file easily?

  What is the best way to do complex reporting on subversion logs like the following for each file? file, directory, last revision date, previous revision date(where revision date is at least 30 older than last), days diff(between revision dates) Since Subversion allows on revision to change multiple files I assume svn log needs to be run against each file individually. Ideas (that don't seem very good): Shell scripting to produce a csv file to be imported to a DB. The following is a start but doesn't show the filename: find . -name "." -print | xargs -l svn log -l 2 Shell scripting to produce XML and then use XSLT to create CSV to import to a DB. It might use a similar command to above but would still have some of the same limitation. Write a program to just parse the log on the whole directory tree, make one insert to DB per revision/file combination, and then query the DB.

  What is the simplest way to log the response-time for a restlet-based webservice? I want to make sure that our webservice has a reasonable response time. So I want to be able to keep an eye on response times, and do something about the requests that take too long. The closest thing I could find is this recipe: http://www.naviquan.com/blog/restlet-cookbook-log, it explains how to change the log format. But there doesn't seem to be a parameter for response times, so probably a completely different approach is needed.

• Trouble converting an MP3 file to a WAV file using Naudio

I know what's going wrong, but I don't really know how to go about fixing it. The problem is: I'm getting an ArgumentException. MSDN says that this is because the sum of offset and numBytes is greater than the length of sampleBuffer. What I've been wondering is: do I need to increase the size of the array dynamically, or do I need to find out the needed size at the beginning and set it right away? And also, instead of 512, the method in Mp3FileReader returns 365 the first time. Which is the size of a whole block. But I'm writing the full 512. I'm basically just using the read to check if I'm not at the end of the file yet. Do I need to catch the return value and do something with that, or am I good here?

• IE7 issue - cannot download streamed file when Automatic prompting for file downloads is disabled

  Hi, My application is J2EE (JSP/Servlet) based. I encounter an issue when i try to open a new window (pop-up) from JSP and call a Servlet action (e.g. Streamer.do) which streams a PDF file inside that pop-up. Problem: While IE 7 - Tools - Internet Options - Security - Custom Level - Downloads - Automatic prompting for file downloads is Disabled and while pop-up window get opened, I am unable to download the file (Save/Open prompt is not comming up). In contrast, when I enable this option, I am able to download. But this option sometimes would be disabled in some environments. While testing this in Mozilla Firefox 3.0/3/5/IE6 it is working fine without any settings change. When i check it to enable i then get the Save/Open prompt to work correctly. This should be problem with IE7. Can anybody help us with Javascript or any working settings which doesnt care whether the "Automatic prompting for downloads" option in IE7 is enabled.   I am new Pentaho Reporting Tool. I have the following question: When I created a report using Pentaho Report Designer, it output a report file having .prpt extension. So as we haven't specified any datasource information here, I think that the .prpt file contains that information in it. If that's true than Isn't Jasper is better Reporting tool than Pentaho because when we display Jasper reports, we have to provide datasource details also so in that way our report is flexible and is not bound to any particular database.

• Separate log files for each web application and shared libraries with log4j

  I have few web applications run on the Tomcat server. Each application contains its own log4j library copy inside its own war. This allows for separate, flexible logging configuration per application. I also have few shared libraries (kept in Tomcat's shared libraries directory). I would like to have shared library loggers output among with the application (which uses them) loggers output (for example: if application A logs to file a.log, and uses library b.jar, I would like b.jar to log also to the a.log file). The problem is, that the shared libraries are loaded by the shared classloader, which causes that they can't access loggers defined by the applications. Is there any solution for this issue?

  Hello, I have a application server for network operations written with JAVA based on Apache Mina. Recently I encounter a strange behavior in my log files. I noticed that the log file is full of @^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^.... characters. I mean those unexpected characters are vast amount of as such the log file gets hundreds of GB in a couple of hours! I have no clue about this problem and it is almost impossible to google it. What could be the reason? Are those set of characters any familiar to anybody? I can give more details about the application if needed. Thanks in advance.

  This belongs on Meta but I can't ask it there since, well, I can't log in :-) I'm unable to log into my account using my OpenID, josh.gitlin.name on either StackOverflow or Meta. The error message I receive after entering my OpenID on the login page and pressing "Login" is: Unable to log in with your OpenID provider: Error occurred while sending a direct message or getting the response My alternate OpenID hmblprogrammer.pip.verisignlabs.com doesn't work either. Anything I can try? (And is there any way this question can be associated with my account even though I'm not logged in?)

• Need a way to determine if a file is done being written to.

  The situation I'm in is this - there's a process that's writing to a file, sometimes the file is rather large say 400 - 500MB. I need to know when it's done writing. How can I determine this? If I look in the directory I'll see it there but it might not be done being written. Plus this needs to be done remotely - as in on the same internal LAN but not on the same computer and typically the process that wants to know when the file writing is done is running on a Linux box with a the process that's writing the file and the file itself on a windows box. No samba isn't an option. xmlrpc communication to a service on that windows box is an option as well as using snmp to check if that's viable. Ideally Works on either Linux or Windows - meaning the solution is OS independent. Works for any type of file. Good enough: Works just on windows but can be done through some library or whatever that can be accessed with Python. Works only for PDF files. Current best idea is to periodically open the file in question from some process on the windows box and look at the last bytes checking for the PDF end tag and accounting for the eol differences because the file may have been created on Linux or Windows.

• Django/jQuery - read file and pass to browser as file download prompt

  I've previously asked a question regarding passing files to the browser so a user receives a download prompt. However these files were really just strings creatd at the end of a function and it was simple to pass them to an iframe's src attribute for the desired effect. Now I have a more ambitious requirement, I need to pass pre existing files of any format to the browser. I have attempted this using the following code: def return_file(request): try: bob=open(urllib.unquote(request.POST["file"]),"rb") response=HttpResponse(content=bob,mimetype="application/x-unknown") response["Content-Disposition"] = "attachment; filename=nothing.xls" return HttpResponse(response) except: return HttpResponse(sys.exc_info()) With my original setup the following jQuery was sufficient to give the desired download prompt: jQuery('#download').attr("src","/return_file/"); However this won't work anymore as I need to pass POST values to the function. my attempt to rectify that is below, but instead of a download prompt I get the file displayed as text. jQuery.get("/return_file/",{"file":"c:/filename.xls"},function(data) { jQuery(thisButton).children("iframe").attr("src",data); }); Any ideas as to where I'm going wrong?   I've written a WCF IDispatchMessageInspector, so I can log incomming and outgoing messages. But I'm not sure how to get a nicely-formatted XML string to log. RECOVERY is not a recognized SET option. incorrect syntax near _5_log'. i am using visual studio 2010 (also have SQL Server Express installed locally, SQL Server 2008 proper installed at provider (shared)) thnx a lot

I am using apache logger for my logging which creates a log file which works fine with no issues.my question is when i open the log file i get the different messages like messages with INFO,DEBGU,ERROR etc. But i wanted to see the error message in red color in text in my logger file.. is it possible? So in that way if some one opens my log file if some thing is there in red they can clearly can guess that it is an error message.. Is it possible.. • Deploy an hta file in an exe or msi file

  I've written an HTA file frontend for our web app that allows the web app to run without web browser status bars etc, and allows it to access the local system for certain tasks. I need a way to deploy this to customers. I need an installer to supply an hta file, an ico file, and add a link to them in the start menu and on the users desktop. I looked at building an installer with NSIS, but I couldn't figure out how to assign the icon to the shortcuts - The icon had to be a standard HTA one. Can this be done with NSIS, or should I be using another installer? P.s. I've got no particular preference for NSIS, it's just something I once used a very long time ago. When I download stuff, I think I prefer them to be msi files that launch with windows installer (it feels more like downloading a .rpm or .deb on linux which I am used to) but I know nothing about how those are created. I'm a web/linux guy who knows very little about windows programming.

• Configuring Hadoop logging to avoid too many log files

  I'm having a problem with Hadoop producing too many log files in $HADOOP_LOG_DIR/userlogs (the Ext3 filesystem allows only 32000 subdirectories) which looks like the same problem in this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2091287/error-in-hadoop-mapreduce My question is: does anyone know how to configure Hadoop to roll the log dir or otherwise prevent this? I'm trying to avoid just setting the "mapred.userlog.retain.hours" and/or "mapred.userlog.limit.kb" properties because I want to actually keep the log files. I was also hoping to configure this in log4j.properties, but looking at the Hadoop 0.20.2 source, it writes directly to logfiles instead of actually using log4j. Perhaps I don't understand how it's using log4j fully. Any suggestions or clarifications would be greatly appreciated.

• Reading a binary file in perl: Bad File Descriptor

  I'm trying to read a binary file 40 bytes at a time, then check to see if all those bytes are 0x00, and if so ignore them. If not, it will write them back out to another file (basically just cutting out large blocks of null bytes). This may not be the most efficient way to do this, but I'm not worried about that. • What about the Sql transaction log

  Hi, i always thought that the sql transaction log keeps track of all the transactions done in the database so it could help recovering the database file in case of a unexpected power down or something like that So then, in normal usage, when the data is committed and written to disk, it is cleared because all the data is nice and safe in the mdf file. Seeing the ldf file grow and reading some i understand that that is not the case, and it will keep growing, until: you shrink the log. Only at that point all the commited transactions are cleared and the log file is shrinked. I found some sp's who should do this, but also found the theory that you first have to backup the database? That last step doesn't make sense to me, so can anyone tell me of that is correct and if so, why that is?
