  • Is Silverlight hard to learn?

    - by Sahat
Hi I understand I will be getting pretty subjective opinions but give it to me anyway. How hard is Silverlight for someone who has beginner-level knowledge of Java? On the scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate Silverlight learning difficulty?

  • In Objective C, what's the best way to extract multiple substrings of text around multiple patterns?

    - by Matt
For one NSString, I have N pattern strings. I'd like to extract substrings "around" the pattern matches. So, if i have "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" and my patterns are "brown" and "lazy" i would like to get "quick brown fox" and "the lazy dog." However, the substrings don't necessarily need to be delimited by whitespace. I have a hunch that there's a very easy solution to this, but I admit a disturbing lack of knowledge of Objective C string functions.

  • Implementing Projectile Motion

    - by DMan
I've scored the internet for sources and have found a lot of useful information, but they are math sites trying to tell me how to solve what angle an object has to be at to reach y location. However, I'm trying to run a simulation, and haven't found any solid equations that can be implemented to code to simulate a parabolic curve. Can those with some knowledge of physics help me on this?

  • Is there such a tool for testing

    - by kjack
Say one has a structural codebase where lots of the code is in GUI control events and has no tests. So such code, to my knowledge is not suitable for unit testing Is there a tool that can test each routine automatically replacing references to code elements external to the routine (be they functions, variables or GUI controls) with appropriate mocks(?) and record the results in a database for later comparison after code changes? So the testing program would have the duty of writing, running and reporting tests with minimal intervention?

  • Reuse nib's across multiple UIViewControllers

    - by colm
I've created some custom UITableViewCells in a nib file and would like to use that across multiple UIViewControllers. Can anyone tell me the best practice way to do that? My limited knowledge around loading nibs seems to suggest that you have to specify a single owner class in Interface Builder. Thanks.

  • Simplest database implementation

    - by MaX
I am looking for a really simple database implementation; basically one with no complex parsing SQL engine. What I am looking for is something demonstrating B+ trees and ACID storage (Suitable for educational purposes). What I have found up-till now form my current searches was hamster-db. I am looking for something even simpler with a smaller code-base. If there is any such opensource project in your knowledge please let me know.

  • How does heap compaction work quickly?

    - by Mason Wheeler
They say that compacting garbage collectors are faster than traditional memory management because they only have to collect live objects, and by rearranging them in memory so everything's in one contiguous block, you end up with no heap fragmentation. But how can that be done quickly? It seems to me that that's equivalent to the bin-packing problem, which is NP-hard and can't be completed in a reasonable amount of time on a large dataset within the current limits of our knowledge about computation. What am I missing?

  • what are good blogs to read relating java, spring, hibernate, maven?

    - by c0mrade
To continue to question further I'm more interested in blogs, websites who once in a while release a tutorial, tip or best-practice on the topics I mentioned. For ex : http://net.tutsplus.com/ is very good website to follow if you wanna learn about or upgrade your knowledge about CSS, HTML, Javascript, PHP .. Is there a website like this for Java and related technologies?

  • iPad GLSL. From within a fragment shader how do I get the surface - not vertex - normal

    - by dugla
Is it possible to access the surface normal - the normal associated with the plane of a fragment - from within a fragment shader? Or perhaps this can be done in the vertex shader? Is all knowledge of the associated geometry lost when we go down the shader pipeline or is there some clever way of recovering that information in either the vertex of fragment shader? Thanks in advance. Cheers, Doug twitter: @dugla

  • DotNetNuke Module Packaging

    - by user326502
Does anyone know of any simple, concise tutorials for packaging DotNetNuke modules for DotNetNuke 4 and DotNetNuke 5? Preferably something concerning DotNetNuke 5.4, since that's what I'm running. The examples that I've seen all assume background knowledge, or they are about short-cuts to the existing process. I'm a beginner, so I need the simple basics. Thanks very much for any help.

  • JSF, datatable and onRowClick

    - by asrijaal
Hi there, I want a commandlink to be executed when the row is clicked in my datatable. I've created a <h:commandLink> in one of my columns, where a parameter is passed through <f:setActionPropertyListener/> Is there a clean solution to fire this link by a rowClick? Sure I could workaround my missing knowledge with some jQuery but there should be a cleaner way?

  • Books on hiring technical people?

    - by Mark Gibaud
I've just finished reading "Smart, and Gets Things Done" and while entertaining and byte-sized ;-) I found it a little US-centric and slightly less applicable to workplaces that are "only" above-average instead of rockstar--at-work places. I'm looking for more books on how to hire technical people. The only other one that has been recommended is Hiring the Best Knowledge Workers... Can anyone recommend any more?

  • Why isn't there a good scheme/lisp on llvm?

    - by anon
There is Gambit scheme, MIT scheme, PLT scheme, chicken scheme, bigloo, larceny, ...; then there are all the lisps. Yet, there's not (to my knowledge) a single popular scheme/lisp on LLVM, even though LLVM provides lots of nice things like: easier to generate code than x85 easy to make C ffi calls ... So why is it that there isn't a good scheme/lisp on LLVM?

  • Setup a https client in Java

    - by Albinoswordfish
I'm very new to HTTPS/SSL so excuse my lack of knowledge. Right now I'm trying to setup a simple Java client in which it connects to a web server through HTTPS. I've seen some example code online but can't seem to really make sense of it. Also I was wondering if there is a difference between setting it up on a Windows machine compared to another type of OS. If anybody knows a good tutorial on this or can head me towards the right direction it would be appreciated.

  • Childwindows in MVVM

    - by VexXtreme
Hi I'm having a problem understanding something about MVVM. My application relies on dialogs for certain things. The question is, where should these childwindows originate from? According to MVVM, viewmodels should contain only businesslogic and have zero actual knowledge about UI. However, what other place should I call my childwindows from, considering they're UI elements? Doesn't this create tight coupling between elements?
