  • Change encoding to UTF-8 recursively on Windows?

    - by Pekka
Does anybody know a tool, preferably for the Explorer context menu, to recursively change the encoding of files in a project from / to UTF-8 and other encodings? Freeware or not too expensive would be great. Edit: Thanks for the answers, +1 for all of them as they are all fine but I am a lazy bastard sometimes, and would really like to be able to just right click a folder and say "convert all .php files to UTF-8". :) Further suggestions are appreciated.

  • background worker in asp.net

    - by vbNewbie
I migrate my winforms crawler app to a asp.net web app and would like to know how to implement the background worker thread that I use for very long searches? Another posting mentioned asynchronous pages but I am not sure if this would work or how to apply it. The search function that would run can sometimes run for a few days and I would like the user to have the option to perform other functions still. Can this happen?

  • Is it bad practice to 'mix class and interfaces in the same package'?

    - by DerMike
Hello, I just found something that I never heard of before and I do not agree with (by now). In an (upvoted and not further commented) answer I read "why to mix class and interfaces in the same package" So I wonder, if there are reasons to separate Interfaces and implementations in Java. I know that we are not obliged to have all implementations in the package of the interface, but is it (sometimes) wise to have none there? Regards Mike [;-)

  • How to do your best when everybody is too busy?

    - by Francisco Garcia
Sometimes I have seen some code or part of the project which I could improve but is not related with my current team project. Those times I have a conflict because despite wanting to help, many teams lack enough people and doing extra work seems like betrayal. Obviously any managers will appreciate much more if you focus your effort on their tasks What do you do in in these cases?

  • How to avoid escaping by accident in PERL using system()?

    - by Brian
I want to run some commands using the system() command, I do this way: execute_command_error("trash-put '/home/$filename'"); Where execute_command_error will report if there was an error with whatever system command it ran. I know I could just unlink the file using Perl commands, but I want to delete stuff using trash-put as it's a type of recycling program. My problem is that $filename will sometimes have apostrophes, quotes, and other weird characters in it that mess up the system command or Perl itself.

  • MySQL MATCH AGAINST functionality....

    - by Webnet
Currently I have the following query... SELECT id, LOWER(title) as title, LOWER(sub_title) as sub_title FROM ebay_archive_listing WHERE MATCH(title, sub_title) AGAINST ("key" IN BOOLEAN MODE) However it is not finding rows where the title contains the word "key". "key" is generated dynamically based on a set of keywords, so sometimes it contains + and - symbols.

  • In Javascript, a function starts a new scope, but we have to be careful that the function must be in

    - by Jian Lin
In Javascript, I am sometimes too immerged in the idea that a function creates a new scope, that sometimes I even think the following anonymous function will create a new scope when it is being defined and assigned to onclick: <a href="#" id="link1">ha link 1</a> <a href="#" id="link2">ha link 2</a> <a href="#" id="link3">ha link 3</a> <a href="#" id="link4">ha link 4</a> <a href="#" id="link5">ha link 5</a> <script type="text/javascript"> for (i = 1; i <= 5; i++) { document.getElementById('link' + i).onclick = function() { var x = i; alert(x); return false; } } </script> but in fact, the anonymous function will create a new scope, that's right, but ONLY when it is being invoked, is that so? So the x inside the anonymous function is not created, no new scope is created. When the function was later invoked, there is a new scope alright, but the i is in the outside scope, and the x gets its value, and it is all 6 anyways. The following code will actually invoke a function and create a new scope and that's why the x is a new local variable x in the brand new scope each time, and the invocation of the function when the link is clicked on will use the different x in the different scopes. <a href="#" id="link1">ha link 1</a> <a href="#" id="link2">ha link 2</a> <a href="#" id="link3">ha link 3</a> <a href="#" id="link4">ha link 4</a> <a href="#" id="link5">ha link 5</a> <script type="text/javascript"> for (var i = 1; i <= 5; i++) { (function() { var x = i; document.getElementById('link' + i).onclick = function() { alert(x); return false; } })(); // invoking it now! } </script> If we take away the var in front of x, then it is a global x and so no local variable x is created in the new scope, and therefore, clicking on the links get all the same number, which is the value of the global x.

  • git repository sync between computers, when moving around?

    - by Johan
Hi Let's say that I have a desktop pc and a laptop, and sometimes I work on the desktop and sometimes I work on the laptop. What is the easiest way to move a git repository back and forth? I want the git repositories to be identical, so that I can continue where I left of at the other computer. I would like to make sure that I have the same branches and tags on both of the computers. Thanks Johan Note: I know how to do this with SubVersion, but I'm curious on how this would work with git. If it is easier, I can use a third pc as classical server that the two pc:s can sync against. Note: Both computers are running Linux. Update: So let's try XANI:s idea with a bare git repo on a server, and the push command syntax from KingCrunch. In this example there is two clients and one server. So let's create the server part first. ssh user@server mkdir -p ~/git_test/workspace cd ~/git_test/workspace git --bare init So then from one of the other computers I try to get a copy of the repo with clone: git clone user@server:~/git_test/workspace/ Initialized empty Git repository in /home/user/git_test/repo1/workspace/.git/ warning: You appear to have cloned an empty repository. Then go into that repo and add a file: cd workspace/ echo "test1" > testfile1.txt git add testfile1.txt git commit testfile1.txt -m "Added file testfile1.txt" git push origin master Now the server is updated with testfile1.txt. Anyway, let's see if we can get this file from the other computer. mkdir -p ~/git_test/repo2 cd ~/git_test/repo2 git clone user@server:~/git_test/workspace/ cd workspace/ git pull And now we can see the testfile. At this point we can edit it with some more content and update the server again. echo "test2" >> testfile1.txt git add testfile1.txt git commit -m "Test2" git push origin master Then we go back to the first client and do a git pull to see the updated file. And now I can move back and forth between the two computers, and add a third if I like to.

  • Where to put Assertions?

    - by sud03r
Hi, Having assertions for unexpected conditions is considered to be good defensive coding practice. I happen to place assertions whenever i think something unexpected may happen, but that now seems to be an overkill to me. Additionally, sometimes mild unexpected conditions that don't necessarily lead to crash may even cause failure on customer end. Is there a hard and fast rule to put assertions? Thanks.

  • How to write native SQL queries in Hibernate without hardcoding table names and fields?

    - by serg555
    Sometimes you have to write some of your queries in native SQL rather than hibernate HQL. Is there a nice way to avoid hardcoding table names and fields and get this data from existing mapping? For example instead of: String sql = "select user_name from tbl_user where user_id = :id"; something like: String sql = "select " + Hibernate.getFieldName("user.name") + " from " + Hibernate.getTableName(User.class) + " where " + Hibernate.getFieldName("user.id") + " = :id";

  • Recommend ONE favorite SSIS component that does SFTP/FTPS

    - by Kevin Fairchild
Sometimes normal FTP doesn't quite cut it... When you need to do secure FTP via SSIS packages, what ONE product would you recommend? Before answering, please see if someone has already suggested the same thing and, if so, vote it up. NOTE: Ideally, it needs to handle both SSH and SSL FTP connections, but I'd consider two separate components if it makes the most sense....

  • How to calculate where bullet hits

    - by lkjoel
I have been trying to write an FPS in C/X11/OpenGL, but the issue that I have encountered is with calculating where the bullet hits. I have used a horrible technique, and it only sometimes works: pos size, p; size.x = 0.1; size.z = 0.1; // Since the game is technically top-down (but in a 3D perspective) // Positions are in X/Z, no Y float f; // Counter float d = FIRE_MAX + 1 /* Shortest Distance */, d1 /* Distance being calculated */; x = 0; // Index of object to hit for (f = 0.0; f < FIRE_MAX; f += .01) { // Go forwards p.x = player->pos.x + f * sin(toRadians(player->rot.x)); p.z = player->pos.z - f * cos(toRadians(player->rot.x)); // Get all objects that collide with the current position of the bullet short* objs = _colDetectGetObjects(p, size, objects); for (i = 0; i < MAX_OBJECTS; i++) { if (objs[i] == -1) { continue; } // Check the distance between the object and the player d1 = sqrt( pow((objects[i].pos.x - player->pos.x), 2) + pow((objects[i].pos.z - player->pos.z), 2)); // If it's closer, set it as the object to hit if (d1 < d) { x = i; d = d1; } } // If there was an object, hit it if (x > 0) { hit(&objects[x], FIRE_DAMAGE, explosions, currtime); break; } } It just works by making a for-loop and calculating any objects that might collide with where the bullet currently is. This, of course, is very slow, and sometimes doesn't even work. What would be the preferred way to calculate where the bullet hits? I have thought of making a line and seeing if any objects collide with that line, but I have no idea how to do that kind of collision detection. EDIT: I guess my question is this: How do I calculate the nearest object colliding in a line (that might not be a straight 45/90 degree angle)? Or are there any simpler methods of calculating where the bullet hits? The bullet is sort of like a laser, in the sense that gravity does not affect it (writing an old-school game, so I don't want it to be too realistic)

  • Is typeid of type name always evaluated at compile time in c++ ?

    - by cyril42e
I wanted to check that typeid is evaluated at compile time when used with a type name (ie typeid(int), typeid(std::string)...). To do so, I repeated in a loop the comparison of two typeid calls, and compiled it with optimizations enabled, in order to see if the compiler simplified the loop (by looking at the execution time which is 1us when it simplifies instead of 160ms when it does not). And I get strange results, because sometimes the compiler simplifies the code, and sometimes it does not. I use g++ (I tried different 4.x versions), and here is the program: #include <iostream> #include <typeinfo> #include <time.h> class DisplayData {}; class RobotDisplay: public DisplayData {}; class SensorDisplay: public DisplayData {}; class RobotQt {}; class SensorQt {}; timespec tp1, tp2; const int n = 1000000000; int main() { int avg = 0; clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME, &tp1); for(int i = 0; i < n; ++i) { // if (typeid(RobotQt) == typeid(RobotDisplay)) // (1) compile time // if (typeid(SensorQt) == typeid(SensorDisplay)) // (2) compile time if (typeid(RobotQt) == typeid(RobotDisplay) || typeid(SensorQt) == typeid(SensorDisplay)) // (3) not compile time ???!!! avg++; else avg--; } clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME, &tp2); std::cout << "time (" << avg << "): " << (tp2.tv_sec-tp1.tv_sec)*1000000000+(tp2.tv_nsec-tp1.tv_nsec) << " ns" << std::endl; } The conditions in which this problem appear are not clear, but: - if there is no inheritance involved, no problem (always compile time) - if I do only one comparison, no problem - the problem only appears only with a disjunction of comparisons if all the terms are false So is there something I didn't get with how typeid works (is it always supposed to be evaluated at compilation time when used with type names?) or may this be a gcc bug in evaluation or optimization? About the context, I tracked down the problem to this very simplified example, but my goal is to use typeid with template types (as partial function template specialization is not possible). Thanks for your help!

  • How can I extract the current user's account picture?

    - by Jon Tackabury
I am trying to extract the current user's account picture in Windows 7, but I can't seem to figure out where it is located. I have found that the picture is sometimes written to the User's temp folder, but only after performing certain actions. It isn't always guaranteed to be there. Has anyone had any luck extracting this image? Thanks!

  • What is the standard or best way to deal with database branching with Mercurial or Git branches?

    - by Chad Johnson
This has been a big question mark on my mind. I'm moving to Mercurial or Git very soon for my web software, and sometimes my branches require significant database changes which other branches should not see. This, I can't always share the same database for my branches. Is there some standard way of dealing with database changes for branching and cloning? What do you all do? I'm using MySQL.

  • Anyone know a working CSS selector hack that works in recent Safari but not chrome ?

    - by user318144
The title sums it up. I'll get this out of the way and say I am aware that css hacks are dirty ugly horrible things. Sometimes dirty problems call for dirty solutions though :) So does anyone know of a css selector hack that works for recent safari versions but is not a general webkit hack ? My site behaves properly in chrome but has a bug in safari. So if anyone knows how i can select an element to only have a certain style in safari let me know!

  • Php/MySQL to ASP.NET/MSSQL, Suggest if its worth the trouble.

    - by user302656
Hello Guys, We have been using PHP/MySQL for our web application which has been growing a lot, the database is around 4-5GB and one of the table is 2GB sometimes, hence slowing down whenever any queries to that table is called. Should we just try to optimize, or are we using MySQL above its limit? Will switching our web app to .NET/MSSQL resolve the issues? Thanks
