• How to learn Ruby on Rails as a complete Programming Beginner?

  I want to build a scalable dynamic Web Application. I have never programmed an Object Oriented language before. Or, let's just say I am completely new to programming, because the previous experiences aren't worth talking about. I know I have a really big task ahead of me ^^ but I wanted to get into coding for the last 10 years and now that I'm finally doing it, I would like to know how to get there in the most efficient way. Any good books/tutorials you could recommend? Would it really make sense to learn other, better documented languages before learning RoR? Or would it be better for a beginner to learn C# with ASP.NET first? Thank you for your help in advance ;-)

• How can I do printing in Java with layouts instead of low level coordinates?

  I need to to some printing from my Java Swing application. I have tried to use Java Tutorials, but everything is very low level, and time-consuming. I have to specify the coordinates for every line that I want to print. It it also very lowlevel to use text, because I have to use FontMetrics and calculate what space all text fills up. Is there any easier way to to printing in Java? I would like to design the documents with something like layout managers instead. Any good library or API?

• What is the most mature library to render equirectangular images in Flash?

  I have a series of equirectangular images. I'd like to display them in a custom Flash player so that the user could see the spherical nature of the images, and "look up", "look down", "look left/right" (or pan, zoom, etc). (Note that I have a long series of images, so the library must allow for dynamic loading of the images themselves, rather than having the images "baked" into the SWF player.) What is the best library to manage the display of the equirectangular images in Flash? By "best", I mean the most mature, most reliable, most robust, and fastest performing.   I want to make a TableView of phrases which the user can edit. The "Phrase editor" is being displayed modally. My top left is for the Done button right now. I'm considering making a button at the end of the table for "new phrase". How would I implement that? Is it a good idea to follow the "contacts" application and make a + button in the top right, or Should I make the "Add Items" button at the end of the list? What are HIG implications of either one? • Making a relevant search of text in database using regex

  Can anyone tell me how I could count the possible instances of a keyword in a block of text? I've split a search term up into separate tokens, so just need to run through and do a count for every instance and removing punctuation or other special characters when making the count. Secondly, if someone has inserted search terms surrounded by double quotes, i want to be able to skip explode, but just count instances of that exact phrase. It doesn't have to be case sensitive and I would like to remove punctuation from the phrase when doing the count. Thirdly, in both cases i want to be able to ignore wordpress and html tags. Lastly, if anyone know any good tutorials for relevant searches that answer the questions above, that would cool too.   I'm running GlassFish 2.1 and using NetBeans 6.7. I'd like to create a web interface to my data using JSF 1.2. Trouble is, I'm not sure which 'faces' technology to learn (that includes some good documentation). JBoss/RichFaces seem pretty good on documentation, but I'm using GlassFish. Any thoughts? • html5 video player with simplest controls (only play and paus)

  hi guys, somehow there are really little tutorials out there for html5 video and audio playback. I simply want to embed video and audio files with customized controls. However the controls should be farely simple. I only need a play-button. If clicked, play gets replaced by pause. that's all! however i even don't know how to embed/display a video without "preload controls". Somehow if i only set (without preload controls) Firefox even don't shows anything. Chrome does show a black window. I would love to be able to use jquery to control the video play and pause button. Maybe you have some little start-approach for me! thank you very much!

• When loading shopping cart in Magento with a new Payment module, I get an error I haven't been able

  I am trying to add a new payment module into Magento. However, even after commenting out the vast majority of the code, I still get the following error: Fatal error: Call to a member function isAvailable() on a non-object in /var/www/html/app/code/core/Mage/Payment/Helper/Data.php on line 71 I am using Magento 1.4.0.1, and have disabled the cache. I even emptied the cache several times just in case. The only code currently not commented out is based on the tutorials here and here. The error occurs when the cart is loaded either from the administration area or the front end. Is there anyone out there that has run into a similar issue? I would post code, but I am not sure what needs to be posted. Thanks for the assistance.

  I am creating a WPF app that needs to allow users to work in a temporary disconnected state and I plan to use a Local Database Cache. My question's are about my data access layer. Do you typically create the whole DAL to point at the Cache or both and create a switching mechanism? Is Entity's a good way to go for my DAL against the Cache? • Which file is the COM++ object and how do I import it to .NET?

  I'm trying to write a COM++ object wrapper around a Qt widget (control) I wrote so I can use it in future .NET projects. e.g.: public __gc class comWidget; In the compile directory are the .exe, an exe.intermediate.manifest, and the comWidget.obj, and also some other crap files (.pdb, etc). So what/how do I import into .NET? I feel like I'm missing an important step for registering the object or whatever, but all these tutorials are terrible outdated and ridiculously unhelpful (for instance, I'm using the old CLR syntax because I can't find any good docs on the new stuff, thx again M$ for being lazy faggots as usual)

• How to limit the number of connections to a SQL Server server from my tomcat deployed java applicati

  I have an application that is deployed on tomcat on server A and sends queries to a huge variety of SQL Server databases on an server B. I am concerned that my application could overload this SQL Server database server and would like some way to preventing it making requests to connect to any database on that server if some arbitrary number of connections were already in existence and unclosed. I am looking at using connection pooling but am under the impression that this will only pool connections to a specific database on the SQL Server server, I want to control the total of these combined connections that will occur to many different databases (incidentally I can only find out the names of individual db's dynamically as they change day to day). Will connection pooling take care of this for me, are am I looking at this from the wrong perspective? I have no access to the configuration of the SQL Server server. Links to tutorials or working examples of your suggested solution are most welcome!

• Localization not working

  I have an application that is supposed to be localized (two languages, english being the default). However, I seem to only get the English versions of all strings, regardless of what the system default language is. I am probably missing something trivial, but I've read several tutorials now without any solution. I added this line to main(), NSLog(@"Current locale is: %@", [[NSLocale currentLocale] localeIdentifier]); and the resulting printout is en_US, while the system was set to use the localized language. I checked the build output, and the app bundle contains the XX.lproj folders as I believe they should (and they are UTF-16, I confirmed this). What am I missing?

• Really basic Django E-commerce? Where do I start

  I'm trying to set up a really basic e-commerce site with Django, and am trying to figure out the best place to start. I am relatively comfortable with the framework itself, but have never done any sort of e-commerce development in any language, so I want to learn about some best practices so I don't make any huge or obvious mistakes. I've looked at Satchmo, and even went as far as installing and playing around with it, but it looks like way more than I want. I basically want to show users a list of things, and let them click a button to buy one. No cart, no shipping, just click a button, connect with Authorize.net (or something similar) to do the transaction, and then display a confirmation page. Any suggestions or online tutorials people have found helpful? Even perhaps a tutorial in another language. Or maybe a really lightweight Django plugin that doesn't try to do everything like Satchmo? I've been coming up with very little so far. Thanks!

  I would like to implement some timers into my application. My goal is to provide an easy way to execute some function every x seconds/minutes so I thought about implementing a 1 sec, 5 sec and 15 seconds timer. The first thing i would like to update every 1 second is the built in clock (don't know if there is any other solution in c#, used this method in c++) Another use would be e.g. a sync function etc. which shall be executed every xx seconds. My question is if there are any useful tutorials on this topic? It is the first time that I would like to implement such an timer system into one of my applications and I do not know if there are any things I have to keep in mind. Ok ..so i want an activity to get some input from the user as and then send that string to a service.Then i want my service to run in a way so that i can use other applications while this one keeps running in the background.Also i don't want the service to keep running every second.What i want is for the service to get updated location of my current position every 10 minutes so i was thinkin if there could be a way to make my service to go to sleep n wake up evry 10 mins n check for updates.I don't want to show the update on the UI so i dont think i need to use an AIDL approach and also dont need to bind to the service.I js simply want to start the service as soon as the user enters the string and keep the service runing every 10 mins.I think it is really simple but m very confused.Please help.

Receiving a notification item requires a response back to the 3rd party server (URL) with the a containing the value "accepted". I have never user SOAP and with the basic info found I'm a bit lost for the case of asp.net mvc. Are there any good links showing the principle of receiving and sending SOAP responses?   During Flex programming, I recently ran into several questions (about box models, ways to join lines and misaligning pixels [on doctype]) regarding computer graphics and layout, where I felt that I lacked some basic background on things like concepts like the box model approaches mapping real numbers to a pixel raster (like font anti-aliasing) conventions found across drawing engines, like do you count y coordinates from top or bottom, and why I feel that reading some basic Wikipedia articles, books or tutorials on these subjects might help in phrasing my questions more specifically and debugging my code more systematically. I have repeatedly found myself writing tiny test apps in Flex, just to find out how the APIs do very basic stuff. My assumption would be that if I knew the right vocabulary and some general concepts, I could solve these questions much faster.
