• Apress Books - 4 - Introducing Visual C# 2010 - Initial comments

- by TATWORTH
Apress books Visual C# 2010 (ISBN 978-1-4302-3171-4) - http://www.apress.com/book/view/1430231718 is both an excellent introduction to C# programming and a manual for those with experiance. So far I have only been through a few chapters but I have been favourably impressed. In the chapter on Exceptions, I have posted an errata regarding the custom exception in listing 14-17; it is missing an overload required by FXCOP private CustomException(SerializationInfo info, StreamingContext context) : base(info, context) { } Aside of this minor point, I have no hesitation to recommending this book to anyone who wishes to learn C#.

• Connect to Google Talk without giving access to my full Google Account

- by bneijt
I would like to use Empathy as a Google Talk client. When I choose to go online, I'm asked to give is-admin@canonical.com (Ubuntu) access to manage my online Photo's, Google Drive, Emails and Videos. I don't understand why Ubuntu has to have all these permissions on my Google account, does this mean Ubuntu will start syncing my Google account to Ubuntu One? Can I connect to Google Talk without granting access to my Videos, Emails and Photos to Ubuntu? What do you guys want with all my online things?

• Introducing - TailspinSpyworks - WebForms Sample Application

iBuySpy was a very popular sample application, but a lot has changed in Web Forms development since then. ScottGu suggested that I rewrite the old iBuySpy application so I did. Its ASP.NET 4 with CSS based layout, data access via Entity Framework, etc. The www.asp.net landing page is here http://www.asp.net/web-forms/samples/tailspin-spyworks/ Ill be adding features over time and doing videos to explain some of the cool stuff. You can download the code from CodePlex at http://tailspinspyworks.codeplex.com/...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

• What are some great resources about programming contemporary GUIs and GUI architecture patterns?

- by snitko
So I've read Martin Fowler's old blog post http://martinfowler.com/eaaDev/uiArchs.html which describes various approaches to building GUI from an architecture point of view, discussing patterns and how they were used. But this blog post was written in 2006. Since then, there must have been some new ideas in the field? I was curious whether anyone knows about a similar guide to GUI architectures, but describing contemporary systems? The reason I'm interested in something abstract and theoretical to read is because it really is difficult and time consuming to ACTUALLY learn how ALL of the contemporary frameworks work, given their diversity and the diversity of the languages they are written in. I am primarily a web developer, so I'm familiar with Rails and some Javascript frameworks. But I would also like to know how GUI is built on Android or in Cocoa or in Windows, but without having to learn all of those things.

• Ubuntu 12.04 transmission-daemon and zfsonlinux: bad file descriptor and corrupt pieces

- by Ivailo Karamanolev
I'm running a Ubuntu 12.04 with zfsonlinux and transmission-daemon. The issues: sporadic Bad File Descriptor and Piece #xxx is corrupt errors. After I recheck the torrent, everything seems fine. That happens only when downloading: once it's in seeding mode. This only happens after the torrent client has been running for some time. I installed zfsonlinux from the offical stable ppa (https://launchpad.net/~zfs-native/+archive/stable). I previously tried running transmission-daemon from the Ubuntu repository, but since I've switched to building the latest transmission from source with the latest libevent (all stable) - same thing. I've seen bug reports (https://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/4147) for that issue, but none of them seem to have a solution. How can I fix these errors, or at least understand where they come from and what I can do to rectify the issue?

• Installing ubuntu on MacBook Pro 9,1

- by pratnala
I bought a MacBook Pro 9,1 (Mid 2012, 15inch, NOT retina). Can anyone tell me how to install Ubuntu 12.04 on it? I already have Windows installed via BootCamp. Also, where to install drivers for Ubuntu and all? This link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro has nothing for 9,1 so please help me. If I have to remove BootCamp and reinstall Windows manually because BootCamp doesn't allow resizing of partitions, that's fine. Please tell me how to install Precise on MBP 9,1 Thanks!

• Best SEO practices for mobile URLs: 301, rel=canonical, or something else?

- by Chris
I am developing a site with a mobile version and am trying to figure the appropriate way to manage the URLs for search engines. So far I've considered: Having a mobile site with rel="canonical" links to the regular site. Putting both the mobile site and full site on one URL, and doing user agent sniffing. Another opinion: Spencer: "If you have a mobile site at a separate location or URL, you should 301 redirect each and every mobile page to its corresponding page on your main website. Employ user agent detection so that the mobile optimized version is served up if someone's coming in from a hand-held. - http://developer.practicalecommerce.com/articles/1722-Mobile-site-Development-Best-Practices-for-SEO-Usability Both 2 and 3 make it hard for a user who wants to switch to the full site or mobile site manually, but I'm not sure 1 is the best alternative. What's the best way to write URLs for a mobile site?

• New SQL Down Under podcast episode: Bill Ramos

- by DavidWimbush
I thought Greg Lowe had stopped doing his excellent podcast a while back but every now and then I go and check (just in case). This time I found a new episode: http://www.sqldownunder.com/PreviousShows/tabid/98/Default.aspx. Great! As far as I can see, Greg just slipped this one out without any mention on his blog. I hope there are plenty more to come as there's no shortage of developments to discuss. It's funny to think that when I got into SQL Server, in 2000, one of the things I liked was that it only changed in occasional small increments. Really! This was a relief compared to keeping up with Visual Basic and Visual Studio (and .NET and C# and...). What happened? Did I miss a meeting? Still, I'm not complaining - there's no danger of getting bored!

• System reverts to 87Hz refresh rate at every startup after I have installed nvidia drivers

- by Mohammad Kamil Nadeem
Every time the system starts the screen's refresh rate reverts to 87Hz which results in a pixelated and flickery screen which I have to manually correct every time by either selecting 60Hz as my refresh rate. I have tried "save to X configuration files" and even tried by making the changes as Root but to no avail as it again reverts to 87Hz on every system startup The Open Source Drivers are Okay for regular Unity but many games don't work on it hence I had to install the nvidia drivers. I have been facing this since the Beta Phase although this is on a fresh installation of 12.04 final release. I am also providing my Xorg.conf file just in case it might help http://paste.ubuntu.com/952196/ Also for some reason Displays shows my CRT monitor as Laptop but on open source drivers it was mentioning it as a 14" CRT only This bug is also present on Edubuntu 12.04 This is not present on Xubuntu 12.04 I had selected to install updates and 3rd party software on the install and was greeted with a correct refresh rate screen on the Boot Up. I like Xubuntu.

As one would expect of an industry leader, Oracle's participation in industry standards bodies is extensive. We participate in dozens of organizations that produce open standards which apply to our products, and our commitment to the success of these organizations is manifest in several way - we support them financially through our memberships; our senior engineers are active participants, often serving in leadership positions on boards, technical working groups and committees; and when it makes good business sense we contribute our intellectual property. We believe supporting the development of open standards is fundamental to Oracle meeting customer demands for product choice, seamless interoperability, and lowering the cost of ownership. Nowhere is this truer than in the area of cloud standards, and for the most recent release of our flagship management product, Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c (EM Cloud Control 12c). There is a fundamental rule that standards follow architecture. This was true of distributed computing, it was true of service-oriented architecture (SOA), and it's true of cloud. If you are familiar with Enterprise Manager it is likely to be no surprise that EM Cloud Control 12c is a source of technology that can be considered for adoption within cloud management standards. The reason, quite simply, is that the Oracle integrated stack architecture aligns with the cloud architecture models being adopted by the industry, and EM Cloud Control 12c has been developed to manage this architecture. EM Cloud Control 12c has facilities for managing the various underlying capabilities of the integrated stack in IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS clouds, and enables essential characteristics such as on-demand self-service provisioning, centralized policy-based resource management, integrated chargeback, and capacity planning, and complete visibility of the physical and virtual environment from applications to disk. Our most recent contribution in support of cloud management standards to come out of the EM Cloud Control 12c work was the Oracle Cloud Elemental Resource Model API. Oracle contributed the Elemental Resource Model API to the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) in 2011 where it was assigned to DMTF's Cloud Management Working Group (CMWG). The CMWG is considering the Oracle specification and those of several other vendors in their effort to produce a best practices specification for managing IaaS clouds. DMTF's Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface specification, called CIMI for short, is currently out for public review and expected to be released by DMTF later this year. We are proud to be playing an important role in the development of what is expected to become a major cloud standard. You can find more information on DMTF CIMI at http://dmtf.org/standards/cloud. You can find the work-in-progress release of CIMI at http://dmtf.org/content/cimi-work-progress-specifications-now-available-public-comment . The Oracle Cloud API specification is available on the Oracle Technology Network. You can find more information about the Oracle Cloud Elemental Resource Model API on the Oracle Technical Network (OTN), including a webcast featuring the API engineering manager Jack Yu (see TechCast Live: Inside the Oracle Cloud Resource Model API). If you have not seen this video we recommend you take the time to view it. Simply hover your cursor over the webcast title and control+click to follow the embedded link. If you have a question about the Oracle Cloud API or want to learn more about Oracle's participation in cloud management standards efforts drop us a line. We'd love to hear from you. • Congratulations to Gavin Payne–Microsoft Certified Architect

- by Christian
Huge congratulations to Gavin who became the 6th person in the WORLD outside Microsoft to qualify as a Microsoft Certified Architect in SQL Server today. Gavin’s worked so hard for this since the start of the year and all that work culminated in a grilling 4 hour review board during the PASS summit in Seattle less than 2 weeks ago -- he received his official results last night. To put things into perspective, there are only 25 people on the planet that are qualified to this level in SQL Server; only 6 of those don’t work for Microsoft; and 2 of those work for Coeo. Coeo is the only partner in the UK to have an MCA in SQL Server, and now we have 2! Well done Gavin, we’re all very proud of what you’ve achieved! Christian Bolton - MCA, MCM, MVP Technical Director http://coeo.com - SQL Server Consulting & Managed Services You can read more about the Certified Architect program on Microsoft’s website here: http://bit.ly/4ar5QP

It is based on notepad++ highlighter found here https://70995658-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/lohanplus/files/smali_npp.xml?attachauth=ANoY7criVTO9bDmIGrXwhZLQ_oagJzKKJTlbNDGRzMDVpFkO5i0N6hk_rWptvoQC1tBlNqcqFDD5NutD_2vHZx1J7hcRLyg1jruSjebHIeKdS9x0JCNrsRivgs6DWNhDSXSohkP1ZApXw0iQ0MgqcXjdp7CkJJ6pY_k5Orny9TfK8UWn_HKFsmPcpp967NMPtUnd--ad-BImtkEi-fox2tjs7zc5LabkDQ%3D%3D&attredirects=0&d=1 <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>fileTypes</key> <array> <string>smali</string> </array> <dict> <key>Word1</key> <string>add-double add-double/2addr add-float add-float/2addr add-int add-int/2addr add-int/lit16 add-int/lit8 add-long add-long/2addr aget aget-boolean aget-byte aget-char aget-object aget-short aget-wide and-int and-int/2addr and-int/lit16 and-int/lit8 and-long and-long/2addr aput aput-boolean aput-byte aput-char aput-object aput-short aput-wide array-length check-cast cmp-long cmpg-double cmpg-float cmpl-double cmpl-float const const-class const-string const-string-jumbo const-wide const-wide/16 const-wide/32 const-wide/high16 const/16 const/4 const/high16 div-double div-double/2addr div-float div-float/2addr div-int div-int/2addr div-int/lit16 div-int/lit8 div-long div-long/2addr double-to-float double-to-int double-to-long execute-inline fill-array-data filled-new-array filled-new-array/range float-to-double float-to-int float-to-long goto goto/16 goto/32 if-eq if-eqz if-ge if-gez if-gt if-gtz if-le if-lez if-lt if-ltz if-ne if-nez iget iget-boolean iget-byte iget-char iget-object iget-object-quick iget-quick iget-short iget-wide iget-wide-quick instance-of int-to-byte int-to-char int-to-double int-to-float int-to-long int-to-short invoke-direct invoke-direct-empty invoke-direct/range invoke-interface invoke-interface/range invoke-static invoke-static/range invoke-super invoke-super-quick invoke-super-quick/range invoke-super/range invoke-virtual invoke-virtual-quick invoke-virtual-quick/range invoke-virtual/range iput iput-boolean iput-byte iput-char iput-object iput-object-quick iput-quick iput-short iput-wide iput-wide-quick long-to-double long-to-float long-to-int monitor-enter monitor-exit move move-exception move-object move-object/16 move-object/from16 move-result move-result-object move-result-wide move-wide move-wide/16 move-wide/from16 move/16 move/from16 mul-double mul-double/2addr mul-float mul-float/2addr mul-int mul-int/2addr mul-int/lit8 mul-int/lit16 mul-long mul-long/2addr neg-double neg-float neg-int neg-long new-array new-instance nop not-int not-long or-int or-int/2addr or-int/lit16 or-int/lit8 or-long or-long/2addr rem-double rem-double/2addr rem-float rem-float/2addr rem-int rem-int/2addr rem-int/lit16 rem-int/lit8 rem-long rem-long/2addr return return-object return-void return-wide rsub-int rsub-int/lit8 sget sget-boolean sget-byte sget-char sget-object sget-short sget-wide shl-int shl-int/2addr shl-int/lit8 shl-long shl-long/2addr shr-int shr-int/2addr shr-int/lit8 shr-long shr-long/2addr sparse-switch sput sput-boolean sput-byte sput-char sput-object sput-short sput-wide sub-double sub-double/2addr sub-float sub-float/2addr sub-int sub-int/2addr sub-int/lit16 sub-int/lit8 sub-long sub-long/2addr throw throw-verification-error ushr-int ushr-int/2addr ushr-int/lit8 ushr-long ushr-long/2addr xor-int xor-int/2addr xor-int/lit16 xor-int/lit8 xor-long xor-long/2addr</string> </dict> <dict> <key>Word2</key> <string>v0 v1 v2 v3 v4 v5 v6 v7 v8 v9 v10 v11 v12 v13 v14 v15 v16 v17 v18 v19 v20 v21 v22 v23 v24 v25 v26 v27 v28 v29 v30 v31 v32 v33 v34 v35 v36 v37 v38 v39 v40 v41 v42 v43 v44 v45 v46 v47 v48 v49 v50 p0 p1 p2 p3 p4 p5 p6 p7 p8 p9 p10 p11 p12 p13 p14 p15 p16 p17 p18 p19 p20 p21 p22 p23 p24 p25 p26 p27 p28 p29 p30</string> </dict> <dict> <key>Word3</key> <string>array-data .catch .catchall .class .end .end\ local .enum .epilogue .field .implements .line .local .locals .parameter .prologue .registers .restart .restart\ local .source .subannotation .super</string> </dict> <dict> <key>Word4</key> <string>abstract bridge constructor declared-synchronized enum final interface native private protected public static strictfp synchronized synthetic system transient varargs volatile</string> </dict> <dict> <key>Word4</key> <string>("0)"0</string> </dict> <dict> <key>Word5</key> <string>.method .annotation .sparse-switch .packed-switch</string> </dict> <dict> <key>word6</key> <string>.end\ method .end\ annotation .end\ sparse-switch .end\ packed-switch</string> </dict> <dict> <key>word7</key> <string>" ( ) , ; { } ></string> </dict> <key>uuid</key> <string>27798CC6-6B1D-11D9-B8FA-000D93589AF6</string> </dict> </plist>

• How can I make gnome-terminal not transparent?

- by richq
When I use gnome-terminal the background is annoyingly slightly-transparent. Here you can read the ubuntu.stackexchange.com site through the background. Bigger image These are the background options I have, which are set to "not transparent". I have the desktop visual effects set to "Normal". Changing them to None removes the problem, but obviously I lose out on visual effects like window previews, drop shadows, nicer transitions, etc. Any ideas how to make this background truly solid while keeping normal visual effects?
