• Architecture for html5 multiplayer game?

  Hello I want to write a HTML5 multiplayer game in which there are rooms with two players answering a series of questions with 3 possible answers, 10sec/question, which are being downloaded from a server. It will have some ratings and so on. I want to make it as scalable as possible. I wonder what technologies to use to accomplish that. HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript obviously. But what about the server-side? I have been researching and found that Socket.IO + Node.js + mongoDB would do the job but after doing some more research it maybe not. Can you suggest me some kind of architecture for doing this game? Free technologies, if possible. Or what to read and from where to start in order to understand how to do it. Thanx in advance! P.S. I have an experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, C#, ASP.NET MVC and relational db's.

• Optimization of a Hybrid Pagination Scheme

  I'm working on a Web Application using node.js in which I'm building a partial copy of the database on the client-side to decrease the load on my server. Right now, I have a function like this (expressed as python-style pseudocode, but implemented in JavaScript): get(table_name,primary_key): if primary_key in cache[table_name]: return cache[table_name][primary_key] else: x = get_data_from_server(table_name,primary_key) # socket.io return cache[table_name][primary_key] = x While this scheme works perfectly well for caching individual rows, I'd like to extend it to support the creation of paginated tables ordered according to the primary_key, and loading additional data using the above function for only the current and possibly the adjacent pages. Now, I don't want to keep the list of primary keys on the server to be retrieved every time I need to change the page (which, for reasons beyond the scope here, will be very frequent), and keeping it on the client side, subject to real-time create/delete events from the server, doesn't seem that good an idea, even after compression (using ranges, instead of individual values). What is the best way to calculate which items are to be displayed on a random page, minimizing the space requirements & the need for communication with the server?

• Java Port Socket Programming Error

  Hi- I have been working on a java client-server program using port sockets. The goal of this program is for the client to take a screenshot of the machine it is running on, break the RGB info of this image down into integers and arrays, then send this info over to the server, where it is reconstructed into a new image file. However, when I run the program I am experiencing the following two bugs: The first number recieved by the server, no matter what its value is according to the client, is always 49. The client only sends(or the server only receives?) the first value, then the program hangs forever. Any ideas as to why this is happening, and what I can do to fix it? • Architectural advice - websockets javascript/php integration

  Myself and a friend have started making a game, he's likely to be using impact.js for the user interaction etc, but we need multiplayer functionality so some form of websockets for TCP connections etc. So we were thinking impact.js into socket.io and node.js. However, user accounts, ecommerce, session handling and social media integration will all be handled with Codeigniter (PHP), my question is, is it wise to have node.js running in parallel with Codeigniter, or if this is even possible? If not, if you were to create a multiplayer online game utilising ecomms to buy credits and user accounts, how would you go about this from a structural position and what engines/frameworks would you recommend? • Best database setup for one click games

  I am building a one click game website/mobile app, and I am debating between using MySQL and MongoDB for the backend. The way I have been exploring it is with a NodeJS/Express/Angular/Passport/MongoDB stack - I have also implemented Socket.io. I have gotten to the point where I am sending data from the flash game to the server (NodeJS). The only data that needs to be sent is basic user information, the players score at the end of each game, and some x,y positions for each players game (for anti-cheating). It seems like MySQL would work fine, but as I am already using MongoDB - are there any major drawbacks to continuing to work with MongoDB on this project?

In this post, I’ll share best practices on the configuration of data nodes to achieve optimum performance on the latest generations of multi-core, multi-thread CPU designs. Configuring the Data Nodes The configuration of data node threads can be managed in two ways via the config.ini file: - Simply set MaxNoOfExecutionThreads to the appropriate number of threads to be run in the data node, based on the number of threads presented by the processors used in the host or VM. - Use the new ThreadConfig variable that enables users to configure both the number of each thread type to use and also which CPUs to bind them too. The flexible configuration afforded by the multi-threaded data node enhancements means that it is possible to optimise data nodes to use anything from a single CPU/thread up to a 48 CPU/thread server. Co-locating the MySQL Server with a single data node can fully utilize servers with 64 – 80 CPU/threads. It is also possible to co-locate multiple data nodes per server, but this is now only required for very large servers with 4+ CPU sockets dense multi-core processors. 24 Threads and Beyond! An example of how to make best use of a 24 CPU/thread server box is to configure the following: - 8 ldm threads - 4 tc threads - 3 recv threads - 3 send threads - 1 rep thread for asynchronous replication. Each of those threads should be bound to a CPU. It is possible to bind the main thread (schema management domain) and the IO threads to the same CPU in most installations. In the configuration above, we have bound threads to 20 different CPUs. We should also protect these 20 CPUs from interrupts by using the IRQBALANCE_BANNED_CPUS configuration variable in /etc/sysconfig/irqbalance and setting it to 0x0FFFFF. The reason for doing this is that MySQL Cluster generates a lot of interrupt and OS kernel processing, and so it is recommended to separate activity across CPUs to ensure conflicts with the MySQL Cluster threads are eliminated. When booting a Linux kernel it is also possible to provide an option isolcpus=0-19 in grub.conf. The result is that the Linux scheduler won't use these CPUs for any task. Only by using CPU affinity syscalls can a process be made to run on those CPUs. By using this approach, together with binding MySQL Cluster threads to specific CPUs and banning CPUs IRQ processing on these tasks, a very stable performance environment is created for a MySQL Cluster data node. On a 32 CPU/Thread server: - Increase the number of ldm threads to 12 - Increase tc threads to 6 - Provide 2 more CPUs for the OS and interrupts. - The number of send and receive threads should, in most cases, still be sufficient. On a 40 CPU/Thread server, increase ldm threads to 16, tc threads to 8 and increment send and receive threads to 4. On a 48 CPU/Thread server it is possible to optimize further by using: - 12 tc threads - 2 more CPUs for the OS and interrupts - Avoid using IO threads and main thread on same CPU - Add 1 more receive thread. Summary As both this and the previous post seek to demonstrate, the multi-threaded data node extensions not only serve to increase performance of MySQL Cluster, they also enable users to achieve significantly improved levels of utilization from current and future generations of massively multi-core, multi-thread processor designs. • Game getting progressively laggier?

  I have a small game in HTML5 that uses socket.io to communicate with a node.js server. Now my problem is that, eversince I did my last update on it it seems to have something "chunk up" in the background making it laggier and laggier the longer it runs. In the update were a few temporary local variables being defined with var(you know, variables that are only used during one function and then not needed anymore) alongside with alot of other changes, and I am not even sure if this update or something else is causing this. Might the "var" have caused it? Or what other reasons might this strange complication have?

• Problem using python QPID and gevent together [closed]

  I have a python script that pulls messages from an Apache QPID queue, and then uses gevent to perform (IO-bound) tasks on those messages in parallel. The queue that this script pulls from was recently changed: I suspect the version of the C++ QPID broker changed, although I cannot verify this at the present time. Now, my process deadlocks and hangs upon QPID queue creation. I strongly suspect that this is a result of an incompatibility with gevent, although I have not done the work yet to produce a minimal example to demonstrate the problem. (Next on my list). Does anybody else have experience of getting gevent and QPID to work together? or Has anybody else seen the same issues?

• Creating a Lazy Sequence of Directory Descendants in C#

  My dear friend Craig Andera posted an implementation of a function that descends into a directory in a "lazy" manner, i.e. you get the first descendant back right away and not after all descendants have been calculated. • What sort of things can cause a whole system to appear to hang for 100s-1000s of milliseconds?

  I am working on a Windows game and while rendering, some computers will experience intermittent pauses ("hitches" for lack of a better term). When profiled they appear in seemingly random places in the code. Eventually I noticed that it wasn't just my process that was affected, but (seemingly) every process on the system. All of the threads in my application hitch at once. The CPU utilization drops during these hitches and it appears as if most processes make no progress. This leads me to believe this may be an Operating System or Driver issue, but it only occurs while playing the game (and only on some systems). What sort of operations might the operating system be doing that would require the kernel to pause all user threads and block. Some kind of I/O? At first I thought of paging but my impression is that would only affect a single process, no? Some systems in use: Windows, DirectX (3d), nVidia cards (unknown if replicates on ATI), using overlapped io for streaming

  I need to develop a programm that is going to read some information from a special USB device and access information via Web Socket (socket.io preferred). My client wants to deploy this app on Mac OS X, Windows, Android and iOS. I was looking for development softwares valid for both: Desktop and Mobile, but it is still not clear for me and that´s what I found. Unity - Looks very good but to create a native plugin for reading from the device it lloks like I need the PRO edition. Adobe Air - Looks good but I´m not sure if I can write Native Plugins for all wanted platforms. LiveCode - Still inmature (lots of bugs) and I don´t know if it is possible to write native plugins for my device. Is there any other good platform for my case? What´s your option?

• Compaq Presario R3000 randomly fails to boot on 11.10, 12.04, 12.10

  I’m trying to figure what to do with random failures to boot. My old HP Presario R3000 with AMD Athlon XP-M sometimes boots, sometimes hangs with a blank screen during boot, and sometimes hangs on shutdown. After a few boot attempts it will finally boot to the GNU GRUB screen where I usually can select Recovery Mode, then select return to a normal boot, and the thing will startup and function normally. The pattern is not repeatable and seemed to start after upgrading from 11.04. Clean installs of 12.04 and 12.10 on newly-formatted hard drives make no difference. If this might be a clue, hangs on shutdown often stop at a line with: “pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: cs: IO port probe 0x3000-0x7fff: excluding 0x3000-0x30ff 0x3400-0x34ff 0x3800-0x38ff 0x3c00-0x3cff”. I did try the “acpi=off” modification from 11.10 randomly fails to boot on Compaq Presario R3000 with no change in these random boot failures. Any suggestions sure appreciated.

• How to remove the hint in the terminal?

  As a normal user , when I run some command like ps\netstat, the terminal hint me: (Not all processes could be identified, non-owned process info will not be shown, you would have to be root to see it all.) I know could redirect STDERR to /dev/null can remove this hint. But I want to know is there any way to remove it , such as edit some configuration files ?
