• Compiz and Desktop Effects on Netbook with External Monitor

  I have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off. I've seen a few mentions of this problem on the Ubuntu forums, but never a solid solution. Any ideas? A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB). In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.

  Is it possible to boot the Acer Aspire One PC from an SD card? I have bricked an Aspire One, but it does not even start the BIOS. Aspire One have this issue and a BIOS update usually work and it helped me once in the past, but this time it's all over, and the BIOS update fails. It still reads the SD card with the magic Ctrl + Esc shortcut used to launch the BIOS update. Can I trick the computer into booting somehow using this shortcut?

• netbook intel GMA 3150 external monitor 1920x1080 flicker problem

  Dear all, i recently purchased a acer netbook (apsire one d260). It runs flawlessly. Yesterday I bought a samsung 23" TFT with a native resolution of 1920x1080. According to the information found in the internet and my local computer dealer, the intel chipset can handle the native resolution of the monitor. However, this is only partly the case. I use the VGA cabel to connect, the monitor instantly switches to the native resolution and now the problem: Occasionaly, especially the first 2 hours after booting up, I have a flickering all over the screen, sometimes the entire screen is shaking and spinning around like crazy. I figured out, that lowering the resolution avoids the flicker but this helps only for some time. I can rule out that it's the monitor's problem since I found no issues with another notebook. Right now, I have no problems with the netbook, for about 30 minutes I didn't experience any issues... But I don't know for how long, it occurs without warning :-) I'm worried that if I would bring the netbook back to the dealer and explain my problem, after testing it on an external screen in the local shop, everything works just fine... And I won't get helped with the problem because I can't prove it. (I'm currently in Thailand and over here, customer service is nothing like back home in Germany) What can I do? Is this a driver related issue? (I installed the latest GPU driver) Is it because of the VGA cable? (But why does it work sometimes without any problems and with no issues on the other notebook) I monitored the GPU/CPU temperature, nothing changes really over time..Can it simply be a faulty GPU and is a replacement justifiable? I'm really stressed now because for the time I'm writing, the flickering didn't occur...but for sure, soon or later it will happen again.. I Forgot to mention, the problem also happens if the netbook runs on battery, unplugged. So the only hardware that is plugged is the TFT screen. ...........and here it comes again, flickering has just begun. NEED HELP! • Can't connect to wireless-n in dual mode.

  I recently purchased a Acer Aspire Revo AR3610-U9022. This little nettop uses a Atheros AR5B91 Wireless Network Adapter. I also have a Netgear RangeMax NEXT Wireless Route (model WNDR3300). I have been using this router in dual mode (11G and 11N) on my normal desktop without a problem (Mode: Up to 270Mbps at 5GHz & 54Mbps at 2.4 GHz), but doing this, my Revo won't detect the 11N network as being around... my desktop still does, but the Revo, nope... just the 11G. However, when I switch my router over to just "Up to 270Mbps at 2.4GHz", it kills the 11G entirely, but the Revo recognizes the 11N network. I'm a programmer by trade, and this hardware-y stuff confuses me more than it should. Is there any way that I could set this stuff up so my Revo can connect to the 11N part of my router, but keep the 11G around? :) Thanks!

• Is it safe to buy a replacement laptop battery that has slightly different voltage than the original?

  I'm looking for a new battery for my Acer Aspire 4741g laptop. I am trying to get a higher capacity battery. Many sites (like this one and this one) list batteries that are interchangeable with the battery that came with the laptop (AS10D41). These batteries have higher capacity, but also marginally lower voltage (11.1V vs. 11.8V). Is this a problem? Does it mean that the battery is actually incompatible? The replacement battery I am looking at is AS10G3E, and is listed in many places as being compatible with the AS10D41, but nobody makes any mention of the differing voltages. I am trying to find out what kind of problems a lower voltage battery can cause. I know P=IV; with reduced voltage, will the machine draw more current, possibly damaging components? I'm just speculating, but I'm worried about the chance that using a battery at a lower voltage will damage my laptop.

• ActionScript 3.0: placing code on stage/MC timelines a la AS2 instead of in classes

  I'm aware that ActionScript 3.0 is designed from the ground up to be a largely object-oriented language and using it means less or even no timeline code in Flash documents. I'm quite experienced with OOP and am comfortable writing classes. However, since I mostly use Flash for animations, I hardly ever need to write ActionScript code other than for preloaders, subtitles, quality controls, website links and so on. In fact, I still set my Flash movies to use AS2 to this day because I'm used to gotoAndPlay()/gotoAndStop(), AS2 preloaders, subtitles, quality controls and even getURL(). Of course, I really want to move on now that practically everyone's on Flash Player 9 or 10 and now that I've dabbled with other OO languages like Java, C# and Objective-C too. I'm a complete newcomer to AS3 and am not very learned with AS2 either. Considering my current use of ActionScript, are there any cases where it's still OK to use very simple AS3 code in the timeline instead of moving code to a class, especially since moving to a class might mean unnecessarily increasing the number of LOC from 4 to 40? (Heck, is the latter case ('instead of ...') even a valid concern at all?)

I was looking at an answer to a different question, and Ben Richards had made mention that laptops that support digitizer (possibly wrong terminology) technology is superior. • Input not supported message when monitor is powered off then back on

  I've been getting a message on my monitor where "Input not supported" is floating around. This only happens when I manually turn the monitor off and then later turn it back on. Leaving the monitor on and allowing it to go to the screen saver doesn't seem to cause the issue (but I prefer to turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away from the computer for any length of time). Any ideas what might cause this, only when the monitor is turned off manually? • Laptop not powering down when lid is closed, but when lid is opened

  Currently when I close the lid of my Acer laptop running Windows Vista, the laptop does not power down; however, when I open the lid it does. When looking at the power settings it is set to power down when closing the lid. The trigger to this seems to be the lid being opened not being closed. I seem to recall this behaviour changing when I installed Windows Media centre. Any ideas on how I can get the power down to work on the lid closing? Thanks.

  Besides tacking off the cmos battery, what else can I do In order to reset my BIOS to default? ATM bios access is password protected and I don't know the password anymore. On regular PC stations, there was a jumper, but where is that on a laptop mobo? Do you know any other way of resetting the bios on a laptop?

  Title says it all, just installed the Nvidia card, I know this is a driver related issue I just don't know how to fix it I cannot find a driver version that will work not even the one that windows selects for the card, or the one on the disk supplied with the card. Any help will be appreciated. BSOD output: What happens when I try to install Any driver that does install causes a BSOD the driver disk says it supports windows 7 and the drivers on the disk cause a BSOD too i'm at a loss of what to do. EDIT: Yes I uninstalled the intergrated drivers. PCIE x16 Card from Gainward Tried multiple driver versions Versions that wont install because they cannot pick up card 190.38, 191.07, 196.21, 197.45 Versions that install and cause BSOD 258.96, 260.99, The drivers on the disc (not sure of the version) and drivers from the gainward website (driver version 263.14)

• 11.10 had sound, 12.04 doesnt. Acer Aspire One D257

  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this same problem, because if so it might be worth while for me to file a bug, but it might also be chaos monkey so I wanted to check first. I have an Acer Aspire One D257 and the sound worked in 11.10 by default, but after doing a fresh install of 12.04 there is no sound. There used to be a speaker icon on the menu bar but now there isn't, and volume up and volume down hotkeys now do nothing, which leads me to believe it isn't detecting the sound card properly anymore. Googling for sound problems on an Acer Aspire One D257 on 12.04 isn't showing any helpful results, so I'm wondering if it's just me. Does anyone have an AAO D257 on 12.04 with the sound working, and if so did you have to do anything special to make it work?

I was looking at the timeline for my page loading and I saw that there is a 150ms delay due to some garbage collection taking place while loading the page. http://cl.ly/cce10619c698a5b276e2 It's the yellow line. • Netflix streaming stops loading at 98% on Revo 3700

  I'm trying to stream Netflix on an Acer Revo 3700 running Windows 7 Home Premium, but it hangs on the loading screen at 98% (after it has formatted the player to the right aspect ratio and added the controls, but before the video starts) with no error messages or failures. I have two other machines on the same network, one running Windows 7 Home Premium and another running XP, which both stream faultlessly. Things I have tried: Both a wired and wireless connection to the router Upgrading the video and audio drivers IE, Chrome and Firefox Boxee software Connecting with a VGA cable instead of HDMI (in case it is a HDCP thing) Uninstalling and reinstalling Silverlight. Getting someway into loading a HD movie and turning "Allow HD" off Does anyone know what Netflix is doing at the 98% load mark? Are there any log files? Anything else worth trying? Full disclosure: I'm using Netflix from the UK through a US based VPN. I've tried multiple VPNs and the problem is exactly the same, also the other machines on the same network through the same VPN work fine so I don't think this is the issue, but it might be a factor. The region check happens at around 7% and I get past that.

• How do i tell if my drivers are up to date on Acer?

  Hoping some kind souls can help me out ? I got a blue screen the other day after trying to load sandboxie. So its obviously conflicting with something. I checked if my drivers were up to date on my acer aspire one AOD270 on this intel based site; http://www.drivermanager.com/en/down...tel&Logo=intel Its showing i have 2 drivers that need updating ; Intel NM10 Express chipset and the Realtek PCIE Cardreader. I have no idea whether to do the update via the Intel Driver update site or the Acer drivers download page? I then ran Bluescreenview and on the dump file its showing ; ''caused by driver'' igdkmd32.sys ''file description'' Intel (R) WDDM Kernel mode driver ''product name''Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows 7(R) I bought the laptop here in SE Asia about a year ago. The ''HOT!! NEW download tool'' on the acer drivers site (below) doesnt seem to work and the info about removing and installing drivers is limited. Not sure what to trust on non acer/manufacturer sites. http://support.acer.com/us/en/produc...1&modelId=4040 I've located the igdkmd32.sys file inside the INTEL GRAPHICS MEDIA ACCELERATOR 3600 SERIES 8.14.8.1064. When i click on ''update driver'' in control panel it searches and says its up to date. In windows maintenance it says this intel had a problem, but no solution. For all i know my drivers could be up to date and its something else. Can anybody advise a dummy step by step the process i should follow ? I've never done this before. eg do i delete the old driver first and then download the new one.how much of a problem i could cause by downloading this type of thing wrongly? As yet i havent downloaded any drivers. I've asked on other forums but no luck as yet. Thanks for any help!

  I downloaded the XAMPP .run file from Apacheandfriends but the installation isn't working for me. • Revo 3610 not doing hdmi handshake

  I am having a problem with my Revo 3610 witch is connected to my tv via hdmi. For some reason will it not do the hdmi handshake with the tv, so my tv does not think that there are anything in the hdmi port. I have tested the tv and it works find, with my laptop and dvd. It dose work some times, but this time have it failed for 2 days in a row, and i have tried rebooting, turning the tv off and on, and so on nothing helps. I can trick the TV to listen to the HDMI with connecting with my laptop and then change the hdmi back to my revo, this on the other hand results in the image going thoug nicely but there are a big fat "Check signal cable." on the screen. I have also tryed changing the resolution in the revo but this dose not help ether. Have any one had this problem before, and if so how did you fix it? Example: http://i.imgur.com/gguZ4.jpg
