  I found a tutorial on the net that uses the stringWithContentsOfURL command that is now deprecated as of iPhone OS 3.0. However I can't find out what I'm meant to use instead, and how to implement it. Below is the code surrounding the stringWithContentsOfURL line in case you need it for reference. • Android Maps Back Button

  I'm developing an application that shows a path on a map, determined by a KML file. Specifically, in the MapActivity that is starting the map: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); MapView mapView = (MapView) findViewById(R.id.mapview); mapView.setBuiltInZoomControls(true); Uri uri = Uri.parse("geo:0,0?q=http://urltokml"); Intent mapIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, uri); mapIntent.setData(uri); startActivity(Intent.createChooser(mapIntent, kmlFile)); finish(); } The map loads fine and after a few seconds the path described by the KML shows up. The problem is, when I press the "Back" button, it does not return to the previous screen but instead just hides the KML overlay. If the "Back" button is pressed again, it will return to the previous screen. Any ideas of how to solve this?

I am writing a program in Java using geogoogle (Google Geocoder Java API) http://geo-google.sourceforge.net/ I need from two specific points to get the walking directions between these points and also these info to be exported in a KML file. Do you know how can I do it from Java? Is there an API that I can use? Perhaps making a call from the java program to google and handle the result - but how can it be done? Thanks in advance. PS. • Reversed Latitude/Longitude US Tiger/Line Shape File to MySQL w/ OGR2OGRP

  Hi - I've downloaded the latest set (2010) of TIGER edge shape files (ESRI shapefile format) from the US Census website and am loading them into MySQL using the GDAL ogr2ogr utility. A new table (geotest) does get created with a SHAPE column that has the geometry defined as a LINESTRING. However, I am seeing reversed latitude and longitude values that get reversed when running the following command: ogr2ogr -f "MySQL" MySQL:"geo,user=lejeuned,host=localhost,password=cnickl234" -nln geotest -nlt LINESTRING -append -a_srs "EPSG:4326" -lco engine=MYISAM tl_2010_01021_edges.shp Mapping the latitude/longitude (after reversing them of course) they appear to be spot on so I suspect there is just something I am doing wrong or flag I am missing which is causing the latitude and longitudes to be transposed. When I select the SHAPE column using astext() I get the following result: LINESTRING(-86.69863 32.973164,-86.69853 32.97302,-86.69856 32.97287,-86.698613 32.972825,-86.6988 32.972825,-86.6989 32.972892,-86.6989 32.973002,-86.69874 32.97316,-86.69864 32.97318,-86.69863 32.973164) Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

  Hi, Is it possible to allow users of my website to mark places on a map I display using Google Maps API? I need to then save that location coordinates to a db. I've been looking through the google maps API, I found that I can use the web service to do searches like this: http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?q=Maine,+United+States&output=json&oe=utf8\&sensor=false&key=my_key But I am not sure it's working on a house number level (which I need it to) and I'm not sure how to display a 'did you mean?' to the user when he misspells the address..   I just bought a Google Nexus One smartphone, and I want to write a small Android application for fun. Suppose I can get my current GPS coordinates, so then how can I programmatically find nearby landmarks or points-of-interest within some radius? Is there an API to get GPS geo-tagged landmarks, like in Google Earth's database? For example, if I'm in downtown Chicago, my program would point me to all the "tourist" things to visit in that city. Ideally, it would all run on my smartphone, but if necessary, I can have the smartphone query a webserver, which would then run more queries.

If I wanted to retrieve all houses within a geo-lat/long box, like the SQL below: SELECT * from houses WHERE latitude IS BETWEEN xxx AND yyy AND longitude IS BETWEEN www AND zzz Question: How would I do this type of retrival with NoSQL ... using just a key-value store system? Even if I could do this with NoSQL, would it even be efficient or would simply going back to using a tradition database retrieve this type of information faster?

• Why would a error get thrown inside my try-catch?

  I'm pushing a copy of our application over to a new dev server (IIS7) and the application is blowing up on a line inside of a try-catch block. It doesn't happen locally, it actually obey's the rules of a try-catch block, go figure. Any idea why this would be happening? Shouldn't it just be failing silently? Is there something environmental I need to enable/disable? Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. • Markers in Google Maps Application

  I am supposed to display a certain location using Google Maps application. I have lat/long values and tried Intent.ACTION_VIEW with "geo:lat,long?z=15" uri. The Google Maps application loads centered on the supplied lat-long value but obviously does not display any marker(overlays) pin-pointing the location. Is it possible to request the Google Maps App to display markers? Also, the zoom level paramater doesnt seem to work. Maps load at the default zoom level of 10. I can easily achieve this using MapActivity but Google Map App is what is desired. Thanks

• Geocoding autocomplete bias not working

  I'm using the following code to get the autocomplete functionality for an address input box using Google Maps API v3: function initializeAutocomplete() { var defaultBounds = new google.maps.LatLngBounds( new google.maps.LatLng(1.484016,103.575212), new google.maps.LatLng(1.233592,104.033618)); var input = document.getElementById('destStreet'); var myOptions = {bounds: defaultBounds, types: ['geocode']}; autocomplete = new google.maps.places.Autocomplete(input, myOptions); } The problem is that biasing doesn't seem to work as the first results are usually not relevant to the defined bounds (a country). I've seen a few apps working fine, so I'm wondering where the problem is. I came across the JQuery autocomplete plugin (http://code.google.com/p/geo-autocomplete/) which would seem like a good alternative since it has a region filter, but I'm unable to "install it" or use it because of my very limited knowledge (I learn by example). Could you please help me getting more relevant results with the above code or guide me through the implementation of the JQuery alternative? Of course I'm very open to other suggestions as well.

• Wunderground and UTC Offset

  I am consuming the international weather forecasts via Wunderground's XML API: http://wiki.wunderground.com/index.php/API_-_XML Looking at an output for Kabul, Afghanistan for instance: http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/ForecastXML/index.xml?query=OAKB I notice that there is no UTC offset. The closest that I can see is this: <tz_short>AFT</tz_short> Which identifies the current TimeZone is AFT. The problem I see is that there is no universally accepted time zone abbreviations, so I cannot take these abbreviations and look up and offset from C#'s TimeZoneInfo objects. Is there a listing of Wunderground's Time Zones abbreviations/names/offsets so I can map their Time Zones to the TimeZoneInfo objects, or is there a better way to get this information? I will need to use the TimeZoneInfo so I can calculate daylight savings time for different locations internationally.

However it seems Google is needing these formatted differently to the values I have stored. i.e. For the town of McTavish I have values of 45.5 and -73.583 This works here: http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/WXCurrentObXML/index.xml?query=45.5,-73.583 But when I use Google it does not: See: www.google.com/ig/api?weather=,,,45.5,-73.583 Any help appreciated.   I am geocoding a large amount of user entered addresses and interested in the accuracy levels returned. My GOAL is to get the BEST POSSIBLE ACCURACY score for a given address. I call the geocder api following way http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?q={address}&output=csv&sensor=false&key=xx now the accuracy levels returned for same address with/without premise name q = Key Arena, 305 Harrison Street, Seattle, WA 98109 (Accuracy is 5) q = 305 Harrison Street Seattle, WA 98109 (Accuracy is 8) q = Key Arena, Seattle, WA 98109 (Accuracy is 9.) Its obvious from the above that the google servers does not return the best accuracy when street name is appended with premise/venue. the question is :) is there a way to pass the complete address ( with premise name / i.e case 1 ) and get the Max Accuracy. ( or how can tell the google server that the address is passed with premise/building name and street name) ( if you are thinking why not just use case 3, the answer is these are user entered addresses, they could enter "my moms's house" for premise, with accurate street address. in which case i want the accuracy to be 8 not 5)

• iPhone - Image overlay MapKit framework?

  I can see with iOS4 you can now tile an image on google maps (Been looking at the TileMap example from apple). This is great as this is what I want to do, but from what I can see I need to know the GEO reference of the image so I can raster the images with the appropriate zoom levels, etc. What I have is an artist image, which is a map of a specific area and I want to overlay this image on google maps. Am I missing something here, but can this be done with a none standard map and having different zoom levels? The main reason why I need to use google maps is because of the GPS functionality, so the user will know where they currently are on the map.

  I'm using sunspot/rails version 2. It's working great, but I can't figure out how to handle missing fields. If I don't have latitude and longitude this code will map it to 0,0 (near Africa): searchable do text :resume, :stored => true text :city, :boost => 5 latlon(:geo) { Sunspot::Util::Coordinates.new(latitude, longitude) } end I tried using two search blocks, each with a different conditional, but sunspot just uses the first searchable block. What I want to happen is for things missing locations to still be searchable, just not by location.

Now I want to retrieve all the objects which lie in a specific perimeter (10 miles or 20 miles) around a given point. I guess what I would have to do is to form some query like: SELECT * FROM objects o where o.lat < (myPositionLat+x) AND o.lon < (myPositionLon+y) Is this right? How do I determine/set the values for x and y?

• Server-side access to Client Browser's Latitude/Longitude using Django.

  Hello, So i am writing a little app that compares a user's position against a database on web-based server written using Django and performs some functions with it. Accessing the browser's geolocation data (in supported browsers ) is fairly trivial using JavaScript. But what is the best way to allow the Django server to access the longitude and latitude variables? Is it best to wrap them up as a JSON object and send to the server via POST? Or is there some easier (Geo)Django-based way to access the Navigator.geolocation browser object. Please forgive a newbie a question like this, but my Google-Fuing only seems to find ways to insert variables into JavaScript via template tag, whereas I need it to work the other way! Any advice or code snippets greatly appreciated. Feel free to talk to me like I am an idiot.

• How do you do real time document tracking?

  I was considering diff Document Tracking options and came across DocTracking.com. DocTracking.com allows you to upload documents (PDF Word etc) and adds some kind of invisible tracking to it and returns the document to you which can then be used just like you would use the document otherwise. This tracking tells you when your documents were opened, who opened them (IP), geo-location of opening if they are re-opened or forwarded, what pages were read and how long it was read for, what was printed. Any leads on how this could be done would be appreciated.
