• Image manipulation filter needed: unobtrusively hide an area by blurring or smudging?

  I would like to hide an empty area of a panorama stitched with hugin (using the GIMP). Hide in the sense of blending it in unobtrusively. I.e. fill the area with the average color of the surroundings and blur it. Or manually smudge the surroundings into the empty area. Is there a filter/plug-in that automatically smudges/blurs the edges into the area? Not looking for seam carving. Thanks.

• How can I force Firefox to select the tab to the right on tab close?

  I'm using TMP 0.3.8.2 and a host of other extensions on FF 3.6.3 on OSX 10.6. I've tried disabling all other extensions that might interfere with tab settings but it's hard to keep track of everything because I have literally 60 (about 30 are disabled though) that are on and off in various configurations. I'm wondering if there's a way to FORCE Firefox to select the tab to the right on closing a tab, in such a way that it overrides any other setting anywhere else. I realize the prospects for this are dim. Thanks.

  I've been using a Mac at work for a couple of months now, but after getting used to it there still are some annoyances that I'm trying to eliminate. If I have multiple windows open, clicking on a non-active window will activate it - but the application does not register the click. Coming from a Windows background, this makes the UI feel very sluggish, as I feel I'm spending far more clicks than I should. Is there a way to configure this behavior? I know there are utilities available for Windows to tweak things like this, are there any similar tools available for Mac OS?

• What Sort of Server Setup Am I Likely to Need? - School A/V streaming

  My prior experience with servers has generally been limited to home file-sharing servers, low-traffic web-servers, and the like. This leaves me with the technical knowledge of how to set up a system, but little experience in terms of scaling said system. My current project, however, has me as the technical lead in setting up a school for online audio and video streaming. The difficulty I'm running into is that I don't quite have the experience to guess what they'll need, and they don't have the experience to tell me - so I've tried to ask as many pertinent questions about what they want to do with their server, and here's what I found out: About 1000 simultaneous users, and hoping to expand (possibly significantly) Both video and audio streaming, at obviously the highest quality possible Support for both live and playlist-based streaming. Probably only one channel, but as it's an educational opportunity, I imagine letting them have a few more wouldn't hurt. No word on whether they're locked into Windows or whether Linux is acceptable. Approximate budget - $7000. It may actually be about $2k less than this, because of a mishap with another technology firm (they ordered a $7000 DV tape deck for some reason, and now the company wants them to pay a 30% restocking fee). The tentative decisions I've already made: I'm planning on using Icecast 2 for my streaming server, fed by VLC Shoutcast encoding. Since the school already has a DMZ set up, I plan on placing the Icecast server in there, and feeding it through their intranet from a simple workstation computer in their studios. This system isn't in any way mission critical - it's an education tool (they're a media magnet school), so I figure redundancy is not worthwhile to them from a cost:benefit perspective. What I don't know is this: How powerful of a server will I need? What is likely to be my major throttle - bandwidth? How can I mitigate that? Will I need anything special for the encoding workstation other than professional video and audio capture cards and a copy of VLC? Are there any other considerations that I'm simply missing? • Upgrading memory in a laptop

  I'm a bit confused about all the memory types and various bus frequencies of modern consumer PCs. Requesting expert help on the subject. So far I'm confident that: I have an Asus X51L laptop with an unknown set of configuration options. The CPU in there supports PAE, so I still have a chance to extend the memory beyond 3GiB; and the upper limit of the system is 8GiB. (?) The laptop has two SODIMM slots, one of which is occupied by a 2GiB bank, and the other one is empty. dmidecode and lshw tools consistently state 533 Mhz frequency of the bank. The last one confuses me the most. I failed to find out characteristics of the northbridge in this laptop, and still can't figure out what DDR2 to seek for. Is it DDR2-1066? Or, rather, PC2-8500/PC2-8600? Wouldn't a DDR2-800 bank harm the system's performance? Which kind of modules should I look up in stores? Update: I have bought a 2 GiB DDR2-800 SODIMM, and it seams that the system can't handle 4 GiB of memory. When installed by itself in either slot, both new and old bank (which btw happens to be marked GDDR2-677) work just perfectly; i.e. any configuration resulting in 2 GiB works. When both banks are installed though (totalling in 4 GiB), the memcheck86 tool produces horrible artifacts and crashes, and system reboots; an Ubuntu system can be started and even logged into a Unity session, but the system reboots too in this case from even a minor RAM load. So it's pretty obvious to me now that this laptop doesn't support 4 GiB of RAM or more.

  Win7 How can I select multiple files in explorer and get a string of text listing the file names like i would get if i selected the files from within "open file" window of an application. for example if i have a Dir that contains 100 jpegs and i select 01.jpg, 05.jpg, 10.jpg in windows explore via ctrl+clicks or shift+click how can i get a text string that reads " "01.jpg" "05.jpg" "10.jpg" with or without the selected files full path " with out dragging the selected files to another window? I've tried copy and pasting into Note Pad and Word Pad and it either past the picts into the the application or a empty clipboard.

• Good Choice of Memory for Asus K52F-BBR5

  I recently purchased an Asus K52F-BBR5 notebook. It's a basic laptop with an Intel P6100 CPU and Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset. It came with 3GB of DDR3 SODIMM memory and I'd like to expand it to 8GB. I'm a little confused by DDR3 nomenclature and not up to date on my knowledge of chipsets. I'd like to make a good choice when selecting memory for it. Crucial's database suggests using either a PC3-8500 with CAS 7 or a PC3-10600 with a CAS of 9. Is the 8500 better because of it's CAS 7 or will my chipset run the memory async at a higher speed and get better performance? Which would be a better choice for my chipset and CPU? Price difference is negligble.

So I was thinking about building the following as the VMWare physical server: Intel iCore 7 950 (LGA1366, 4 cores,8 threads) Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3 LGA 1366 X58 ATX Intel Motherboard 24 GB of Viper II Series, Sector 7 Edition, Extreme Performance DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) CL9 Triple Channel Memory VelociRaptor 300GB 10,000 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive I am planning on running the newest version of VMWare ESXi (64-bit). On these I am planning on running a few various servers: Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ IIS (several custom built ASP.NET Apps) Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ MS SQL 2008 Database Server Linux Web Server w/ Several WordPress Blogs (XAMPP?) Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ IIS (DEV ENVIRONMENT) Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ MS SQL 2008 Database Server (DEV ENVIRONMENT) In your opinion, will this hardware be sufficient to run the above load with room for possible 2-3 more virtual machines (probably lightweight web servers)?

  I want to buy a $40000 1 tera flop cluster to keep it in a room. What are the standard configurations? Cluster is supposed to do molecular dynamics simulations on biological systems. I'm proposed a 4 pc with 8 cores each by the selling company I'm deadling with. It looks like I also need infiniband. Does some one has an experience -- what phisical memory should I buy etc?   Because of this problem with ActiveX objects changing size, I am not grouping my ActiveX objects in my Excel worksheet. Grouping them causes my solution hack to not work which is quite annoying. However, I often times want to be able to essentially use the mouse and select a region and then select all ActiveX objects contained in the region. This would also be useful for easily selecting objects to group them initially. Basically: Use mouse to select area Automatically select all ActiveX components in region I'm fine with a VBA solution if needed. How can I do this?

• Manually iterating over a selection of XML elements (C#, XDocument)

  What is the “best practice” way of manually iterating (i.e., one at a time with a “next” button) over a set of XElements in my XDocument? Say I select the set of elements I want thusly: var elems = from XElement el in m_xDoc.Descendants() where (el.Name.LocalName.ToString() == "q_a") select el; I can use an IEnumerator to iterate over them, i.e., IEnumerator m_iter; But when I get to the end and I want to wrap around to the beginning if I call Reset() on it, it throws a NotSupportedException. That’s because, as the Microsoft C# 2.0 Specification under chapter 22 "Iterators" says "Note that enumerator objects do not support the IEnumerator.Reset method. Invoking this method causes a System.NotSupportedException to be thrown ." So what IS the right way of doing this? And what if I also want to have bidirectional iteration, i.e., a “back” button, too? Someone on a Microsoft discussion forum said I shouldn’t be using IEnumerable directly anyway. He said there was a way to do what I want with LINQ but I didn’t understand what. Someone else suggested dumping the XElements into a List with ToList(), which I think would work, but I wasn’t sure it was “best practice”. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

  I have a SmartGWT webapp that uses a TreeGrid with a dataSource. I would like this treeGrid to preselect values saved in a cookie. I have gotten the value to be saved in the cookie correctly, however I have tried several different methods of getting the treeGrid to select these values and I can not get it to work. I am attempting to do this in the onmoduleLoad method in my entry point. I have tried: Cookies.setCookie( "selectedUnit", TreeGrid.getSelectedPaths() ) to set the cookie and then when the page is reloaded: TreeGrid.setSelectedPaths( Cookies.getCookie("selectedUnit" ) When I could not get that to work, I tried storing just the id of the item selected: Cookies.setCookies( "selectedUnit", TreeGrid.getSelected().getAttribute("id") ) and then onLoad attempting to find that record and select it: TreeGrid.selectRecord( TreeGrid.getTree().find("id", Cookies.getCookie("selectedUnit") ) ) This did not work either, so finally I tried storing TreeGrid.getSelectedState() and upon retrieving that value form the cookie onLoad, passing it to TreeGrid.setSelectedState() similar to my first attempt, but passing state instead of path. I could not get any of these things to work. Can I not tell the TreeGrid to select an item in the 'OnmoduleLoad' method? Is this action only valid after the TreeGrid has been drawn? If that is the case where and how can I do this? Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Something like: XmlNode locationNode = personNode.SelectSingleNode("//location[name = {reference to personNode}/name]"); Since I am selecting based on the personNode it would be handy if I could reference it in the select. Is this possible?.. is the connection there? Sure I could put in a few extra lines of code and put the name into a variable and use this in the XPath string but that is not what I am asking.

• SHBrowseForFolder doesn't work for network selection in win7

  Hi, I use SHBrowseForFolder in my code. It works well in XP. But I find it dose not run well in Windows 7 with the same code. When I click a network, it does nothing. But it can expand in XP. By the way, I have the permission to access the network of another computer and I try accessing the resource with explorer, it's OK! Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? Thanks in advance!

  Can anybody please explain me how to use glPushName and glPopName. I like to use them instead of glLoadName, but I laways get GL_STACK_OVERFLOW and GL_STACK_UNDERFLOW errors. (First, under then overflow). Example code would help me too. Thanks for any advice. Note #1: My Rendering/selection_rednering code consists of multiple glBegin(...)/glEnd() blocks, if this is any problem plus various Rotations and Transformations.
