  • Performance of file operations on thousands of files on NTFS vs HFS, ext3, others

Feel free to close it if the question's too broad for superuser.] This is something I've been curious about for years, but I've never found any good discussions on the topic. Of course, my Google-fu might just be failing me... I often deal with projects involving thousands of relatively small files. This means that I'm frequently performing operations on all of those files or a large subset of them—copying the project folder elsewhere, deleting a bunch of temporary files, etc. Of all the machines I've worked on over the years, I've noticed that NTFS handles these tasks consistently slower than HFS on a Mac or ext3/ext4 on a Linux box. However, as far as I can tell, the raw throughput isn't actually slower on NTFS (at least not significantly), but the delay between each individual file is just a tiny bit longer. That little delay really adds up for thousands of files. (Side note: From what I've read, this is one of the reasons git is such a pain on Windows, since it relies so heavily on the file system for its object database.) Granted, my evidence is merely anecdotal—I don't currently have any real performance numbers, but it's something that I'd love to test further (perhaps with a Mac dual-booting into Windows). Still, my geekiness insists that someone out there already has. Can anyone explain this, or perhaps point me in the right direction to research it further myself?

  • Dichroic Glass in Blender

    I am trying to use blender to simulate the Lycurgus Cup. The cup is an example of dichroic (two-color) glass, and appears green when a light source is on the outside of the cup, and appears red when a light source is inside the cup. I have made the glass a red color, and then used the colorbands under the Object-Material/Shading-Ramps tab to add green specular and diffuse color. However, this makes the glass appear the same mix of red and green whether I put the light source on the inside or outside the cup. An example can be seen here: According to the second post here, someone was able to to fake the effect of a dichroic glass in blender rather easily through the use of a magic procedural texture but they provide no clues on how to do this (in blender). Does anyone know how to achieve this effect in blender?

  • Cannot change port 25 to port 587

    I am using outlook 2003. My email provider is Cox. Trying to change my out going port to 587 so I send mail while traveling. Others I know on Cox have done this with succes, but they are using newer version of outlook. When I go to change my existing email accounts, outlook will not allow me to change the settings. I can delete 25, but it will not allow me to type in 587. What am I doing wrong?

  • Unzip individual files from multiple zip files and extract those individual files to home directory

    I would like to unzip individual files. These files have a .txt extension. These files also live within multiple zipped files. Here is the command I'm trying to use. unzip -jn /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile2011\*.zip /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles2011*.txt -d /path/to/home/directory/for/extract/ From my understanding, the -j option excludes directories and will extract only the txt files The -n option will not overwrite a file if it has already been extracted. I've also learned that the forward slash in /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile2011\*.zip is necessary to escape the wildcard (*) character. Here is sample of error messages I'm coming accross: Archive: /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile20110808.zip caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110807.txt caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110808.txt Archive: /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile20110809.zip caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110810.txt caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110809.txt I feel that I'm missing something very simple.     I'll be regularly running Visual Studio 2010 Professional, SQLServer Express, Office and at least 1 virtual environment running a Linux Distro. I want the machine to be snappy and responsive even when doing a reasonable amount of Development work. I want to spend what it takes for this, but I don't want to go overboard spending more than I need to. I won't be playing many games or graphics processing so i won't need a monster of a machine. Any recommendations?

  • Too many connections to 212.192.255.240

    Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. UPDATE: This is the HiJackThis log file and I can't find any thing weird. Also, the program is also trying to create connections to 91.205.127.63, which is also from Russia.   • Multiple contacts with shared information

    Background: I currently have several hundred contacts, synchronized between a Microsoft Exchange server and several mobile devices. I also save exported copies of the contacts in .vcf format. Is there a good way (application, file format, whatever) to maintain contacts with shared information? A very common scenario is that I have contacts for two or more people who live in the same house, for example: John Doe 123 Main Street, Anytown USA Home: 555-555-1111 Work: 555-555-2222 Mobile: 555-555-3333 E-mail: [email protected] Jane Doe 123 Main Street, Anytown USA Home: 555-555-1111 Work: 555-555-4444 Mobile: 555-555-5555 E-mail: [email protected] As you can see, both contacts have the same home address and phone number, but distinct names and work and mobile phone numbers. (Other information might also be either shared or distinct.) The applications and file formats I'm familiar with don't seem to have a good way to deal with this. If I use a single "John & Jane Doe" contact for both, it's difficult to distinguish the distinct information (if I want to call Jane's mobile phone rather than John's). If I use a separate contact for each, I have to remember to update both of them (or all of them for N 2) when they move or change their home phone number. An ideal solution would let me create a record containing information for their household, and have each of their contact records contain a reference to the household record, so that when I view John's contact record I see both shared and distinct information. Is there anything out there that has good support this kind of thing? (I would think there would be, since it's a very common scenario.) (I suppose I could roll my own system that generates merged .vcf files from some extended format, but that wouldn't play well with synchronizing across multiple devices.)

  • Virtual Machines Renaming/Backing up/Sharing

    I've started using VMware virtual machines for all of my software development projects and have a few questions for others doing the same thing. First, how can you rename the virtual machine and the name of the virtual hard drive? I have a base development machine that I clone for different projects. I'd like to name the machine and it's hard drive according the the project (right now when I copy them via cut and paste, the file names remain the same and I can only organize them by putting them in a specific directory). Second, what is the best way to back up a virtual machine? Is it possible (by breaking the virtual hard drive up into chunks instead of one big file) to get incremental backups working? It seems time machine always tries to make a copy of the whole thing which is time consuming because each virtual machine is around 30GB. Finally, how slow would it be to have a virtual machine shared on an NFS mount on a wireless N network and used from multiple computers (but with only one person using it at a time.) Would it be more reasonable on a gigabit lan connection? Thanks for your input! And please feel free to share any advice or wisdom about using virtual machines for software development and the best ways to speed them up!

I need to run SSH from remote-machine to local-machine and run gedit (in local-machine, under the default $DISPLAY) but openning a file in remote-machine throught SFTP. Something like this: myuser@remote-machine:~$ ssh local-machine "DISPLAY=:0.0 gedit sftp://remote-machine/some/file" The command above doesn't work. gedit shows this message: Could not open the file sftp://remote-machine/some/file. gedit cannot handle sftp: locations. Note that: /some/file exists on remote-machine. I can SSH normally from remote-machine to local-machine using my SSH key without any problems! I can run the command DISPLAY=:0.0 gedit sftp://remote-machine/some/file in a terminal on local-machine and gedit opens the file on remote-machine without any problems - but the terminal in which I executed the command is running in DISPLAY :0 (really, it's gnome-terminal). I also tried -t option of SSH client (to force pseudo-tty allocation) but it didn't work. If I try to run DISPLAY=:0.0 gedit sftp://remote-machine/some/file in local-machine but under a tty (for example in tty1, by pressing <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<F1>) it doesn't not work - I get the same error when running from remote-machine. I found that if I pass the environment variable DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS with a correct value, it works! So, if I do something like that: myuser@local-machine:~$ env | grep DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS > env.txt myuser@local-machine:~$ scp env.txt remote-machine: and then: myuser@remote-machine:~$ ssh local-machine "DISPLAY=:0.0 $(cat env.txt) gedit sftp://remote-machine/some/file" it works! The problem is that I'm not on local-machine so I can't get the correct value for this env variable. Is there any other way to make this work?

  • External Hard Drive Won't Mount - MAC OSX

    I have a Western Digital hard drive that's about 4 or 5 years old. It's 500 GB, USB. I use it to backup my Mac every so often. I had it partitioned: 1 side for full backups, and the other side for general storage of music, installers, etc. I decided to get rid of the partition today and dump all the data. So I opened disk utility, and hit 'erase'. It started thinking and then disk utility crashed. After the crash, the hard drive won't mount, however disk utility still sees the drive, but not the individual volume within. I tried booting up Disk Warrior and no luck there either. It has the drive as an "unknown drive". When I hit rebuild, it goes through all it steps and then stops cause of this error: The drive "unknown" is severely damaged and DiskWarrior is unable to determine its case sensitivity What can I do at this point? There isn't any physical damage to the drive. Never been dropped or anything.

  • Setting up a wireless network with Verizon MiFi

    I am trying to set up a home network. I live in a location without cable internet so I have a Verizon MiFi card. I have a few laptops at the moment and they each connect through the card but I want to set up an Ubuntu 10.10 server and see if I can use it for DHCP. I have a Trendnet TEG-S50G switch and the computer I plan to use for the server has a Linksys WMP-11 Wireless PCI card. Is there any other equipment I need in order to get this to work? Is this even doable? Is there a better way to make this happen?

  • Windows 7 search doesn’t find text strings

    I’m not able to find any text strings starting not from the beginning of word in filename or in file content using Windows 7 search. My Windows 7 search configuration: Let’s say I’m searching for a documents containing word “content”. I’m able to find those documents when searching for “content”, “conte”, “con” (as long as the string includes the beginning of the word). "content" "con" But if I search for “ontent”, “tent” or any other combination that doesn’t include the beginning of the word, Windows search won't find it. I've tried other indexing/searching software such as Copernic Desktop search, Google desktop search. Those programs also weren’t able to find part of the word starting from the middle of the word. For instance, it finds “conte”, but doesn’t find “onte”. Finds “conte” Doesn’t find “onte” I got the same problem using Copernic desktop search. On the other hand, when I use non-indexing content search software such as Agent Ransack or FileSeek, I get the same results when searching for “conte” or “onte”: “conte” “onte” Why do all pre-indexing content search applications (Windows search, Google desktop, Copernic desktop search) fail to search for a string inside the words? Why do non-indexing applications find text strings wherever they are: in the beginning, middle or end of the word? I’ve tried wildcards and other constructions with no luck. *onte onte “onte” content:onte content:onte content:~onte All these searched doesn’t find the word “content”. How can I make Windows search find strings from any part of words? Could you try these searches and see if they work for you? Or is this normal behavior? Thank you. Update: Using wildcards before or after "onte" doesn't find any results. content:~=onte doesn't find any results.

  • Modem doesn't seem to pass internet connection to router

    I was supplied a Cisco DPC3825 modem by my ISP and use a Cisco E4200 as my main router. Today the Internet just stopped working, just out of the blue, I can't think of anything that would have triggered it. It's been working pretty good for the past month except for a few random blips here and there. After some trouble shooting I realized that a direct wired connection to the modem would get me Internet access but if I was wired to the router as I was before I would have no connection. Assuming it was router I connected a TP-Link WR841N but it had the exact same problem. Also, connecting to the router via Wi-Fi from multiple devices will connect me to the router but I still can't get access to the Internet. From these test, it seems that the modem just won't send Internet through to the router but is clearly connecting and able to directly connect to my PC. What I've Tried A full reset and factory reset on the E4200 A full reset on the modem (but I believe my ISP has remote access to the modem because the passwords and so on are always set back). My ISP has remotely reconfigured the modem What I Should Try What else can I try? What should I do to try to narrow down the issue? Can you figure out what the problem might be based on this information?

  • Is there a way to make Apple Mail work well with Exchange server calendar?

    My office uses Macs, but most of our clients use Windows and Outlook. Whenever people send invitations from Apple Mail to a Windows/Outlook machine, the invitations are garbled and look nothing like the nicely formatted invitations that Outlook people are used to. We also have no tools to view shared calendars, so we can choose mutually open time slots, and other useful calendar features that Outlook has and Apple Mail seems not to. So is there a plugin or third party program that will give Apple Mail the nice calendar features of Outlook? (By the way, I've looked into actually buying Outlook for Mac, and the pricing is kind of prohibitive, because you MUST buy the whole Office Suite, which we already have, there's no upgrade path, and there's no volume discounting.)

  • UDP multicast streaming of media content over WIFI

    I am using vlc to stream media content over wireless network in scenario like this (from content streamer to stream receiver client): The bandwidth of wireless network is 54 Mb/s and UDP stream's required bandwidth is only 4 Mb/s; however there is trouble in receiving media stream and quality of playing specifically in multicast mode; means I can play the stream but it has jitter and does not play smoothly. In uni-cast I can stream up to 5 media streams correctly, but in multicast mode there is problem with streaming just one media! However when I stream from client some multicast streams; the wifi access-point can receive data correctly and I can see the video in "udp streamer" side correctly even when number of multicast streams increases to 9; But as you see I want to stream from streaming server and receive media in client size. Is this a typical problem of streaming real-time contents over wireless networks? Is it necessary to change configurations of my WIFI switch or it is just a software trouble? thank you
