Database (MySQL) structuring: pros and cons of multiple tables

I am collecting data and storing it MySQL, for: 75 variables 55 countries Each year I have, at this stage since I am building this tool created a single table, of variables / countries (storing 1 year worth of data). Next year (and for several years after that) a new set of data will be input for each country. There are therefore 3 variables in controlling data returned to a user reviewing all collected data. The general form of any query would be: Show me these specifics variables, for these specific countries, for these specific years. (Show me average age and weight, for USA and Canada, for 2012 and 2009, for example) My question is, it seems that I have two options for arranging this data: -Multiple tables where I create a table of country / variable for each year data is collected - Single table and simply add a column (field) for the year that data relates to. As far as I can tell I could make these database calls with either sructure, but is one more powerful / efficient / quicker, and why? Thanks for your consideration. Best way of creating lite and extended version of Git project

I have made a little framework for php. In this project I have the basic functionalities that I use for most of my projects. I have also inserted some sample data so I do not forget how it all works again. I have put the framework under version control using git. Everything works fine now and I want to further build on this. This is my first git project so I do not know which method I should use. Ok the first thing I want to do is creating 2 more versions of the project. As I explained before the version I have now has some sample data inside it. So the first version I want to create is a stripped down version, removing the sample data. I can use this version to create any new project. The second version I want to create is an extended version. This has the lite version, combined with the sample data, plus some more extensions on it. So in the end I have 3 version of the same project, small medium and large. Now what is the best way of doing this. Should I create 3 repositories for this, or can I use just one repository for all the versions.

I want to build a Google-friendly web app, where should I start?

I have only very basic experience with HTML/CSS and have quite a bit of experience with testing software and web apps from a consumer perspective. I'd love to launch a web application that plays nicely with Google services, similar to some of the apps you'd find on the Google Apps Marketplace, such as ManyMoon, time to note, Socialwok, etc. I'm a huge Google fan and would like to build something that's well integrated with other Google services. If you were a total beginner and wanted to build a complex app like one of examples above (project management, CRM, etc), where would you start? If you worked your ass off 18 hours a day, 24/7, how fast could you do it? I've dabbled into various languages and development frameworks, and read about which apps are using what languages but it's hard to figure out what would be most beneficial to jump into. Ruby on Rails, PHP, Google Web Toolkit, AppEngine. The list goes on and on. I want to be able to build and launch my own scalable web app. Thanks.

Comparing two select elements values

I've been been trying to look for a piece of javascript code that compares the values selected by a user in a html form from two <select> tags. So if the user selects a minimum value that is greater than the maximum number an alert box in javascript should be displayed. For example, if the user selects 5 bedrooms from the the MINIMUM bedrooms dropdown list and then 3 bedrooms from the MAXIMUM bedrooms dropdown list, this should not allow the form to be processed when the submit button is clicked. Is programming overrated?

[Subjective and intended to be a community wiki] I am sorry for such an offensive question: But here are my arguments Most of the progress in "computing" has came from non-programming sources. i.e. People invented faster microprocessors and better routers and novel memory devices. I dont think on average people are writting more efficient programs than those written 10 years ago. And the newer and popular languages are infact slower than C. though speed is one of the lesser criterias. Most of the progress came from novel paradigms. Web, Internet, Cloud computing and Social networking are novel paradigms and did not involve progress in programming as such. Heck even facebook was written in PHP and not some extreme language. Though it did face scalability issues (same with twitter) but i believe money and better programmers (who came in much later) took care of that. Thus ideating capability trumped programming capability/ Even things like Map-Reduce, Column oriented database and Probablistic algorithms (E.g. bloom filters) came from hardcore Algorithms research, rather than some programming convention. Thus my final point is why programming skill is so overstressed? To point a recent example about how only 10% of programmers can "write code" (binary search) without debugging. Isnt it a bit hypocritical, considering your real successs lies in coming up with better algorithm or a novel feature rather than getting right first time???

I got a form containing multiple checkboxes. This form shall be sent to the server to receive appropriate results from a server side script. This is already working. What I would achieve now: 1) Implementing a timeout: This is already working, but as soon as a timeout occurs, a new request is not working anymore. 2) Implementing a delay in requesting results: A delay shall be implemented so that not every checkbox is resulting in a POST request. Is there any way to access codeigniter language and config properties from included javascript files

Good morning! I'm having great success so far with CodeIgniter. I'm new to PHP and web development in general, but I feel that CodeIgniter is giving me a leg up while I catch up on the basics. My question for today is this - I have been happily loading config and lang values from my views for a while now, and everything is working fine. But what about JavaScript files being linked into my views? Is there any way to make the $this-lang-line and $this-config-item function references available to me in my JavaScript files? I am implementing jQuery client-side validation, and would like to pull in my error messages from the server, both to support internationalisation and to make sure that validation gracefully degrades if JavaScript is not available, in that the error messages pushed back into the view from the server-side validation are identical to those displayed dynamically by the jQuery validation. I would not like to have to keep coming back to make sure that these strings are kept in sync. As for internationalisation, I'm fresh out of ideas on how to support that if it turns out that lang and config item strings are completely unavailable from my JS files. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! :)

I have been going through all of the different PayPal integration options and trying to decide which will be the best one for this particular application. I realized that I really want to give users a few options for payment. For example, it might be more convenient to enter their credit card information rather than being sent over to PayPal, or they may have already setup their Google Checkout and so want to use that. So that brings me fairly quickly to the realization that maybe I don't want to program one or two or three API integrations myself and I should look at some shopping cart software. However, we really don't need a whole shopping cart -- we will have a specific form and some other custom coding and the only part of the shopping cart we would really use would be the checkout page to handle accepting payment/integrating with PayPal/Google Checkout/Authorize.net. I like how simple eJunkie makes things and the fact that it accepts PayPal and Google Checkout and Authorize.net. The problem is that the Add To Cart buttons aren't going to cut it. I need to be able to programmatically enter items into the cart. Maybe I can just use an open source PHP shopping cart and skip the store front somehow.

Margin-Top push outer div down

jQuery: Problems cookies internet explorer

I have made a login page. When the user logs in a request to an API is send. This API is PHP and checks the username and password. When both are correct an unique key is send back (this is placed in the database for further use: userid and other stuff needed in the website). After that key is sent back it is placed in a cookie: $.cookie("session", JSON.stringify(result)); After the cookie is set I send the user to a new page: location.href = 'dashboard.htm'; In this page jQuery checks if the cookie "session" is present. If not, the user is send back to the login page. sessionId = ($.cookie("session") ? JSON.parse($.cookie("session")).SessionId : 0); return sessionId; This works fine in Chrome, but IE (8/9) has some problems with this. I figured out that when you get to dashboard.htm the session is present. As soon as I hit F5 the session is gone. And sometimes the cookie isn't set at all! I can't seem to figure out why this is happening in IE. Has someone any idea? Other options/ideas to save that unique key are also welcome. Thanks in advance.

Django + GAE (Google App Engine) : most convenient path for a beginner?

Some background info first: Goal: a medium-level complexity web app that I will need to maintain and possibly extend for a few years. Experience: good knowledge of python, some experience of MVC frameworks (in PHP). Desiderata: using django and google app engine. I read extensively about the compatibility issues between GAE and Django, and I am aware of the GAE patch, the norel project, and other similar pieces of code. I have also understood that the SDK provides some of the features of django "out of the box". Yet, given that I have no previous experience with neither Django nor GAE, I am unable to evaluate to which extent using a patched version of Django will strip away important features, or how far the framework provided in the SDK is compatible with Django. So I am rather confused on what would be the best way to proceed in my situation: Should I simply use a patched version of Django as the differences with the original Django are so minor that I would hardly notice them? Should I write my app completely in "regular django" and try to port it to GAE only afterwards, when I will have got a grasp on Django internals and philosophy? Should I write my app using the framework provided with the SDK and port it to django only afterwards? Should I... ? Thank you in advance for your time and advice.

Removing specific tags in a KML file

I have a KML file which is a list of places around the world with coordinates and some other attributes. So in this case that would mean I would like to remove everything except <name>Albania - Durrës</name> The problem is, this KML file includes more than 1000 of these places. Doing this manually obviously isn't an option, so then how can I remove all tags except for the name tags for all of the items in the list? Can I use some kind of program for that?

C++: how to build my own utility library?

I am starting to be proficient enough with C++ so that I can write my own C++ based scripts (to replace bash and PHP scripts I used to write before). I find that I am starting to have a very small collection of utility functions and sub-routines that I'd like to use in several, otherwise unrelated C++ scripts. I know I am not supposed to reinvent the wheel and that I could use external libraries for some of the utilities I'm creating for myself. However, it's fun to create my own utility functions, they are perfectly tailored to the job I have in mind, and it's for me a large part of the learning process. I'll see about using more polished external libraries when I am proficient enough to work on more serious, long term projects. So, the question is: how do I manage my personal utility library in a way that the functions can be easily included in my various scripts? I am using linux/Kubuntu, vim, g++, etc. and mostly coding CLI scripts. Don't assume too much in terms of experience! ;) Links to tutorials or places where relevant topics are properly documented are welcome.

Hey guys, I would like to have group based restrictions that would allow users to access only specified parts of the web. I am new to the whole ACL stuff and I didn't quite get it from the manual :/ therefore I would like to ask some questions. But before any questions, my routes look like this: Router::connect('/', array('controller' => 'users', 'action' => 'login')); Router::connect('/admin/:controller/:action/*', array('prefix' => 'admin', 'admin' => true)); Router::connect('/registered/:controller/:action/*', array('prefix' => 'registered', 'registered' => true)); 1.) How do I restrict users from any other group than Administrator to access ONLY the /registered/ part of the web 2.) How do I prevent anyone from using the default addresses like www.example.com/users/add on a global scale (I want only www.example.com/admin/users/add or www.example.com/registered/users/add type of addresses)? This kind of addresses is not event set in the routes.php but they still work. Any answers apprecated

Object model design choice

I am currently working on a ASP.NET MVC reporting application using C#. This is a redesign from a PHP application that was just initially thrown together and is now starting to gain some more traction. SowWe are in the process of reworking the backend to have a more OO approach. One of the descisions I am currently wrestling with is how to structure the domain objects. Since 95% of the site is readonly I am not sure if the typical approaches are practical. Should I create domain objects for the primary pieces of the application (ticket, assignment, assignee) and then create static methods off of these areas to pull the reporting data? Or should I just skip that part and create the chart data classes and have some get method off of these classes? It's not a real big application and currenlty I am the only one developing on it. But I feel torn as to which approach. I feel that the first one is the better choice but maybe overkill given that the majority of uses is for aggregate reporting. Anybody have some good insight on why I should go one way or another?

live image edit , and crop

I was just thinking, which is always dangerous. We use Valums Image uploader. Aside from that, I am looking for an inline image editor, but with a difference. User uploads an image ( lets say 800 x 600 ) Our system wants to see the image ( 170 x 32 ) now I know we can use php to resize images. But I was thinking, does anyone know of a system, where we can display the image, and user can scale, and crop image ( with say a predefined overlay ) By that they scale down to nearest acceptable size, and then click crop tool, which shows a div overlay with say 70% transparency that they can drag over the image, and then click crop. So image is cropped to exact size we need, then can save . I am sure I have seen some jquery stuff done like this, just cannot for life of me find it. Essentialy, we would like to offer a simple client side image processor, thats lightweight, and then the ability to save what they did . Sorry no code to show, as its more of a request. Regards

C++ and its type system: How to deal with data with multiple types?

"Introduction" I'm relatively new to C++. I went through all the basic stuff and managed to build 2-3 simple interpreters for my programming languages. The first thing that gave and still gives me a headache: Implementing the type system of my language in C++ Think of that: Ruby, Python, PHP and Co. have a lot of built-in types which obviously are implemented in C. So what I first tried was to make it possible to give a value in my language three possible types: Int, String and Nil. I came up with this: enum ValueType { Int, String, Nil }; class Value { public: ValueType type; int intVal; string stringVal; }; Yeah, wow, I know. It was extremely slow to pass this class around as the string allocator had to be called all the time. Next time I've tried something similar to this: enum ValueType { Int, String, Nil }; extern string stringTable[255]; class Value { public: ValueType type; int index; }; I would store all strings in stringTable and write their position to index. If the type of Value was Int, I just stored the integer in index, it wouldn't make sense at all using an int index to access another int, or? Anyways, the above gave me a headache too. After some time, accessing the string from the table here, referencing it there and copying it over there grew over my head - I lost control. I had to put the interpreter draft down. Now: Okay, so C and C++ are statically typed. How do the main implementations of the languages mentioned above handle the different types in their programs (fixnums, bignums, nums, strings, arrays, resources,...)? What should I do to get maximum speed with many different available types? How do the solutions compare to my simplified versions above?

Tiny MCE (jquery plugin version) not showing toolbar in IE (works fine in other browsers)

I had an implementation working well but for some reason IE decided it was tired of playing nice. I have an advanced implementation of TinyMCE (the jquery plugin version - see http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/examples/example_23.php for details). It still works great in all browsers but IE. In IE it shows the drop-down options for Format, Font family, and Font size, but only as text.. not as a drop down normally looks. All other buttons on the toolbar are missing. (I've tried IE8 and IE8 Compatibility Mode) I get a javascript error: Syntax error Line 36 Char 1. Unfortunately the javascript is being loaded dynamically so this doesn't help me. How do I subtract two dates in Django/Python?

Hi! I'm working on a little fitness tracker in order to teach myself Django. I want to graph my weight over time, so I've decided to use the Python Google Charts Wrapper. Google charts require that you convert your date into a x coordinate. To do this I want to take the number of days in my dataset by subtracting the first weigh-in from the last weigh-in and then using that to figure out the x coords (for example, I could 100 by the result and increment the x coord by the resulting number for each y coord.) Anyway, I need to figure out how to subtract Django datetime objects from one another and so far, I am striking out on both google and here at the stack. I know PHP, but have never gotten a handle on OO programming, so please excuse my ignorance. TCP/IP Implementation General Questions

I've implemented the concepts shown here; http://wiki.unity3d.com/index.php/Simple_TCP/IP_Client_-_Server outside of unity and it works. (though i had to create the TCPIPServerApp from scratch as i could not find the base project anywhere). I have some general questions on how to use tcp/ip properly however. I've done some research on tcp/ip itself but I'm still a little confused. It seems like using the method above doesn't guarantee that I'll see the message (res). It just checks on every update to see if there is a different message in res. What if multiple messages are sent and the program lags or something, will i miss the earlier packet(s)? Should i instead do an array so it stores the last X messages? How do i know the data was received? Do I need to add a message id and build in my own ack into the data? Should i check to see if the port is in use before setting up a connection? Sorry for all the questions. This is all new to me but I enjoy this very much! ... Below already answered By Anton, Thanks It sounds like tcp uses its own packet numbering to ensure the packets end up in the right order on the other side. What if a packet is missed, are the subsequent packets thrown away? Or is this numbering and packet ordering, only for handling data that is broken out into multiple packets? TCP will automatically break the data into multiple packets if necessary right?

Mgmt wants to re-title my position: Any help...? [closed]

Management here wants to re-title my position, since I'm doing quite a bit of different work than was originally planned. They want my input. After a quick glance over my skill set and job duties, what would we need to describe this position as? I'll just list things I'm at least proficient in, I will not list things I have a passing knowledge of. About me : ~10 years software development. Languages : C, C++, Perl, PHP, C#, TCL, Unix shell scripting, SQL (TSQL, PLSQL) Systems : MS-Dos, Windows 3.1 to 7 for client, NT 4 to 2008 for server, OS/2, IBM MVS & z/OS, Linux ( multiple distros), AIX Current position: I do all sorts of in-house software. The range is single user apps to large systems spanning multiple OS's. One of the larger projects I've designed and coded is about 100k lines of C#, and a database where I have been the sole designer and maintainer. I have near total freedom to design as I see fit, restraints are usually budgetary.
