  • Clone remote CentOS server to local test server?

    We have a dedicated server running ContOS 5.5. The server runs our Magento store and a basic php website with mysql. I have a spare rack server in my office (HP ProLiant DL360 G4) that has more than enough storage space to store a duplicate of our dedicated server. I would like to clone the dedicated server entirely and have a local duplicate. It wouldn't need to be kept in sync because I can do that with GIT. The reason I want to do this is simple; learn more about the dedicated server and CentOS. Is this possible? I have SSH access to the dedicated server and obviously complete access to the local server.

I am setting up a BizTalk 2009 Server production environment and I wonder if this tutorial: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc558972(BTS.10).aspx is still fairly accurate for an installation on all the latest platform software (Hyper-V, Windows Server 2008, BizTalk Server 2009, SQL Server 2008)? Is there anything like this but more up to date? Any other advice about this process and links to articles, blogs & tutorials would be appreciated.

    I have a Windows 2008 Server Standard x64 machine that I need to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard on then ship it to a different site where it will be joined to a Active Directory domain. The server is now using the default "WORKGROUP" workgroup and i need to know if i can install SQL Server on it then ship it to the other site where it will be joined to the domain without issues. What are the possible problems that could happen? are there any workarounds?

  • Strange Maintenance Plan SubPlans behaviour: each SP runs all the tasks of all other SP at odd times

    SQL Server 2005: I have a problem with scheduling a Maintenance Plan (MP) with 3 subplans (SP). SP1 is scheduled to run hourly, SP2 daily at 7.00 and SP3 on sundays at 8.00 Reading MP history I see that what happened (I know it seems crazy) is: 11: SP1 runs and executes all the tasks of SP1 SP2 and SP3 12: SP2 runs and does the same 13: SP3 runs and does the same 14: SP1 runs and does the same From the job Activity monitor, SP1 has last run time at 14, SP2 and SP3 are never been executed. All of the SP are scheduled correctly in the Job Activity Monitor (SP2 for tomorrow at 7, SP3 for next sunday at 8) Do you have any idea what is happening? Thankx a lot Wentu

    Let's say I have a 'MyDB' SQL Server 2005 database (simple recovery) in which I do a Full backup on Sunday, and Differentials every other night BACKUP DATABASE [MyDB] TO DISK = N'c:\Database Backups\MyDB\MyDB_Full.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'MyDB.BAK', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 and BACKUP DATABASE [MyDB] TO DISK = N'c:\Database Backups\MyDB\MyDB_Diff.bak' WITH NOINIT, DIFFERENTIAL, NAME= 'MyDB.BAK', STATS= 10 What does the differential backup process use to decide what data gets backed up on the differential nights? Does it need the mydb_full.bak file to do its business? If I wanted to save disk space, could I zip up the mydb_full.bak file to a .zip file after it's created without adversely affecting the differential backups, and if I needed to restore, just unzip the full backup before starting?

I have application in C#.Net my connection string is ConnectionString = "Data Source=MyServe\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=MyDB;Integrated Security=True;User ID=sa;Password=adminaa"; when I run the application on the computer called MyServe, the database server, it works well, while when I install the application on different computer, when it tries to connect the database it gives an error called "login failed for user 'MyServe\Guest" what is wrong with configuration in the database server or other mistakes. please help me. thankyou in advance.   • Transaction log is full and does not free up space

    Hi, I have a database in SQL Server 2005 whose transaction log becomes full. It is using snapshot replication. I noticed the transaction log is not freeing up space. So I created an additional transaction log. Three days has passed and this first transaction log is still full. I performed a full database backup and transaction backup. Then I tried to shrink the transaction log but the shrink failed. Can anyone advise why shrinking transaction log is failing? ANy other recommendation on how to resolve the problem?

    I have two instances of SQL Server: Server1 (SQL Server 2008) Server2 (SQL Server 2005) I am executing a stored procedure from Server1 which references tables on Server2. It is working fine in my test environment: Server1 runs Vista SP2, SQL Server 2008; Server2 runs Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005. However, it is not working in the production environment: Server1 runs Vista SP1, SQL Server 2008; Server2 runs Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005. The error message I receive is: OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "Server2" returned message "No transaction is active.". Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 21 The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "Server2" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

  • How to get SQL Server Date in its native format?

    I need to get a Date from an SQL Server Database (SQL Server 2000), the date is stored as such: 2009-09-30 00:00:00.000 I want to pass this date into a Classic ASP function to use this date in the Database somewhere else, however when I get the date, it converts in my ASP code to a locale-dependant version, such as: 30/09/2009 I just want the date as-is as formatting the date so it is correct again seems unnecessary, although if this the only way then fine - is there any way to treat it as string data so it stays like that, so it can be inserted back into the database as the same date, without needing conversion?

  • Why do I need to explicitly specify all columns in a SQL "GROUP BY" clause - why not "GROUP BY *"?

    This has always bothered me - why does the GROUP BY clause in a SQL statement require that I include all non-aggregate columns? These columns should be included by default - a kind of "GROUP BY *" - since I can't even run the query unless they're all included. Every column has to either be an aggregate or be specified in the "GROUP BY", but it seems like anything not aggregated should be automatically grouped. Maybe it's part of the ANSI-SQL standard, but even so, I don't understand why. Can somebody help me understand the need for this convention?

    I recently got my hands on a couple of 4 socket servers with Intel E7-4870's (10 cores per cpu) and with hyper threading enabled that gave me 80 logical CPU's. The server has Windows 2008 R2 SP1 along with SQL 2008 (Currently we can not deploy SQL 2008 R2 for the application being hosted). When SQL Server started I noticed only 2 NUMA nodes were configured and 40 logical cores where there should have been 4 NUMA nodes and 80 logical cores (see below).     Since the release of SQL Server 2012 I have become a big fan of using dacpacs for deploying SQL Server databases (for reasons that I will explain some other day) and I chose to use a dacpac to distribute my recently announced utility sp_ssiscatalog (read: Introducing sp_ssiscatalog (v1.0.0.0)). Unfortunately if you read that blog post you may have taken note of the following: Ordinarily a dacpac can be deployed to a SQL Server from SSMS using the Deploy Dacpac wizard however in this case there is a limitation. Due to sp_ssiscatalog referring to objects in the SSIS Catalog (which it has to do of course) the dacpac contains a SqlCmd variable to store the name of the database that underpins the SSIS Catalog; unfortunately the Deploy Dacpac wizard in SSMS has a rather gaping limitation in that it cannot deploy dacpacs containing SqlCmd variables. I think it is worth calling out this limitation separately in this blog post because its a limitation that all dacpac users need to be aware of. If you try and deploy the dacpac containing sp_ssiscatalog using the wizard in SSMS then this is what you will see: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ Could not deploy package. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Dac) ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Missing values for the following SqlCmd variables:SSISDB. (Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql) ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ The message is quite correct. The SSDT DB project that I used to build this dacpac *does* have a SqlCmd variable in it called SSISDB: Quite simply, the Dac Deployment wizard in SSMS is not capable of deploying such dacpacs. Your only option for deploying such dacpacs is to use the command-line tool sqlpackage.exe. Generally I use sqlpackage.exe anyway (which is why it has taken me months to encounter the aforementioned problem) and have found it preferable to using a GUI-based wizard.   • Windows Server firewall asking for advice

    Hello everyone, I have Windows Server 2003/2008 machine, and I deployed some application on this machine. I want to put this machine in a sandbox environment, which means I want this machine to be able to access only proxy/gateway, its private used SQL Server database server, and I want to avoid network access from this machine to other machines in lab server room. Any easy solutions? BTW: my current environment is, I have a server which runs some Beta software in a Lab server room. It connects internet through proxy/gateway. Since the software is Beta, I want to reduce the risk of being hacked from internet and controlled by hacking sofwtare to attack my other servers in the same Lab server. thanks in advance, George

  • Move a SQL Azure server between subscriptions

    In September 2011 I published a blog post SSIS Reporting Pack v0.2 now available in which I made available the credentials of a sample database that one could use to test SSIS Reporting Pack. That database was sitting on a paid-for Azure subscription and hence was costing me about £5 a month - not a huge amount but when I later got a free Azure subscription through my MSDN Subscription in January 2012 it made sense to migrate the database onto that subscription. Since then I have been endeavouring to make that move but a few failed attempts combined with lack of time meant that I had not yet gotten round to it.That is until this morning when I heard about a new feature available in the Azure Management Portal that enables one to move a SQL Azure server from one subscription to another. Up to now I had been attempting to use a combination of SSIS packages and/or scripts to move the data but, as I alluded, I ran into a few roadblocks hence the ability to move a SQL Azure server was a godsend to me. I fired up the Azure Management Portal and a few clicks later my server had been successfully migrated, moreover the name of the server doesn't change and neither do any credentials so I have no need to go and update my original blog post either.
