• Postfix SMTP server down on Ubuntu

  I have a Plesk server running Postfix on Ubuntu 10.04 and the SMTP service on port 25 is down. When I stop and then start postfix the server comes up only for a minute and goes down again. I have checked the load on the server and it is low as shown: *top - 04:29:33 up 19 days, 3:25, 4 users, load average: 1.47, 1.78, 2.34 Tasks: 936 total, 1 running, 935 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.7%us, 0.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 86.6%id, 11.7%wa, 0.6%hi, 0.1%si, 0.0%st Mem: 6110496k total, 6072988k used, 37508k free, 251244k buffers Swap: 12000544k total, 95264k used, 11905280k free, 4370432k cached* IMAP clients are not experiencing a problem and there are no issues with receiving emails for both POP or IMAP. Only SMTP (port 25) is a problem. • Zabbix - Some of the monitored items don't refreh

  I'm experiencing a strange issue with Zabbix monitoring a MySQL server. Most of the data from the server such as MySQL queries per second and MySQL uptime , Buffers memory etc. update nicely while some data like CPU iowait time (avg1) , Host local time ,MySQL number of threads and other items which were monitored in the past has last check time of about a week ago. I can't find any logic in this, for example Mysql number of threads and Mysql queries per second are obtained in a similar way so it does not make sense one of them is monitored and one is not. Please help- how can I fix this? Update - I used zabbix_get from the zabbix server to check one of the items on the zabbix client and it works so the problem must be on the zabbix server side

• What and why is my swap space used under linux

  on my linux system I get these stats from top: Tasks: 155 total, 1 running, 153 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 1.5%us, 0.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 97.4%id, 0.7%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 8177180k total, 2025504k used, 6151676k free, 44176k buffers Swap: 7999996k total, 495300k used, 7504696k free, 637612k cached There it shows me that my system is using 495Mb of swap. Why is this so? 6Gigs of ram are free. And if I would disable swap entirely the system would also work. Any explanation what the number really shows or who is swapping?

• cisco 6500 crash enabling netflow

  Hello everyone, i have a cisco 6503 running IOS 12.2(33)sxi5 and i'm trying to enable netflow. Following the instructions here http://www.manageengine.com/products/netflow/help/cisco-netflow/cisco-ios-netflow.html enabling for interface vlan 3, shortly after ip flow-export version 5 console outputs: CPU_MONITOR-6-NOT_HEARD: CPU monitor messages have not been heard for 30 seconds crashlog here: http://pastebin.com/Niv2H8xD it then writes a crash log and reloads the router. • HDD vanished after wakeup from standby

  In my computer I got two hard drives: One 80GB Intel X25 Postville SSD for the system and a 1,5TB Sata HDD for data. When I put the system into standby, and wake it up again, roundabout 50% of the time the 1,5TB HDD is not found. It just vanished from the system (wreaking havok to all programs running which had open files on it). Even going into the system management and refreshing the drives does not find the lost HDD. There are no messages about this in the event log. After a warm reboot the hdd is found again, just like it should. The system is a Shuttle SP35P2 Pro with 8GB Ram and DualCore CPU, OS is Windows 7 Ultimate. I even set up the OS anew, didn't help. Any ideas what might cause this? How to debug, or maybe even fix it?

• Computer crashes and won't start, LED indicator blinks slowly

  I have a MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard coupled with a AMD Athlon 3700+ and an Antec TPII-550 power supply. The computer crashes at random times in operation, sometimes taking a while to crash, and sometimes crashing right after Windows XP shows the desktop after boot. The CPU temperature is always in the safe range, usually 30-33 degrees Celsius, and swapping the RAM has not done anything, so the crashes aren't cause by the RAM. What could be causing this? If the motherboard were fried, would the computer even boot at all? What causes inconsistent crashing of the computer? After the computer crashes, the LED power indicator blinks about once a second, and the computer does not respond to the power button. This behavior continues until the computer's power supply is completely removed.

• Increase application performance on Amazon AWS

  I've got a client with an MVC v1 (.NET) application running on a micro instance. On this instance, I've got .NET, IIS 7.5, and MS SQL Server 2008 running to handle the application. The client has reported that it is taking nearly 10 seconds to process each request. Even loading the initial login page takes about that long, then logging in takes that long, etc etc. The currently running instance specs are as follows: 615 MB RAM Intel Xenon CPU E5430 @ 2.66GHz 2.78 GHz 64-Bit Is the memory availability the issue? or is it the processing power? I forsee two options: Change to a larget instance Set up a 2-tier architecture with two micro instances Which of these will give the application better performance? Thanks in advance.

  The Basic 64-bit Amazon Linux AMI has the following instance type options available: Micro Large Extra-Large High-Memory Extra Large ... etc I booted up this AMI as a micro type, made customizations, shut it down, detached the volume, took a snapshot, and registered my own custom AMI: ec2-register –snapshot [snapshot_id] –description "my description" –name "my name" –kernel aki-427d952b That worked. HOWEVER, when I try to create an instance from my custom AMI, only the following instance types are available: Micro Small High-CPU Medium ... which coincidentally are the same instance types available if you try to boot up the 32-bit Amazon image. Why are the available instance types of my custom image varying from the available instance types of the image I based it off of?

• What is the best position for power unit?

  I would like to buy new computer case. Last time I bought a computer was in 2008 and many things have changed up to day. Many new computer cases have power unit placed down, on bottom. I'm thinking about buying some of those cases, but i'm not sure about something - if power unit is placed on the bottom it can't take away hot air from the case and pump it out right? All my PC parts are silent - CPU (E8200, placed below 12cm Nochtua fan of power unit) has heat-pipe cooler with Nochtua fan spinning at only 800rpms, GPU has cooler powered by 7V instead 12 and that's why i don't want to HAVE TO place another fan to pump out hot air instead of PU placed on top. That might make some noise. So i ask someone more experienced: if i buy some computer case with PU placed down, do i HAVE TO place some fan to pump out hot air?

  Hello, I started a long running background-process (dd with /etc/urandom) in my ssh console. Later I had to disconnect. When I logged in, again (this time directly, without ssh), the process still seemed to to run. I am not sure what happened - I did not use disown. When I logged in later, the process was not listed in top at first, but after a while it reclaimed a high CPU percentage, as I expected. So I assume dd is still running. Now, I'd like to see the progress. I use kill -USR1 <pid> but nothing is printed. Is there any way to get the output again?

• Disk Redundancy across different server

  I have 3 servers, all with the same specs: Intel CPU 8 GB RAM Linux or BSD Single 2TB desktop SATA with more than 10K Hours of operation, with only less than 300 GB Used My provider cannot install a second hard drive, but can guarantee me that the drive will be replaced immediately in case of failure, with another equally crappy drive. The likelihood of drive failure is high, and since I can't use RAID, I was thinking about keeping a back up of each machine on all the other machines, so that there are always 2 copies on 2 different drives, plus the original. I would synchronize the drives every hour, with rsync, to guarantee some sort of redundancy, since bandwidth inside the DC is free, so it would be much cheaper than offsite backup. (A daily offiste backup is kept anyhow). What do you think? Any suggestion?

• How do i have 4GB of video memory with a 1GB video card?

  I ran the direct X diagnostic tool to take a look at my graphics capabilities and its telling me that the approximate video memory is clocked in at 4096MB. That doesn't make any sense, how is that possible? The only things that i can think of were that DirectX was inaccurate so i looked at the graphics statistics of my computer on CPU-Z which was included with the motherboard and that's telling me i have "negative" 1988MB. Not only is that not 4096MB, but its giving me a negative number and i know for a fact that you can't have a negative amount of memory???!!! The only things i can think of that would be amplifying my video memory output is the PCIe 3.0 bus, or that the motherboard is somehow including the on board video chip set with the video card which only then is only 2GB of video memory, which still has to be being amplified by something. Any suggestions?

  Maybe a little more of the same questions that others have asked but wanted to clarify my doubt, for some years run my hosting company (reseller of esds) and I've done well so far, but I am determined to bring quality and server technology to offer another level. So far I have understood that there is a difference between cloud and cluster servers because the cluster function as load balancers that distribute in different servers roles and use the servers less overloaded in the cloud is the union of multiple servers and then the same is vitualized unlike the cluster that is allowed to use the resources of the CPU and RAM servers in the virtualized environment. My approach is to use 3 dedicated servers to create a cloud server, My doubts: Does this type of cloud servers are only reserved for big companies? (Either because the union of the servers is done by hardware or software with high price) What characteristics should these servers meet? Possibly through software which should be used? Available? • Intel VT-x disappeared after upgrading to Windows 8

  I've upgraded to Windows 8 some weeks ago (MSDNAA!) and today, while I was trying to run a VM, I've noticed that VT-x is disabled. Now, Hyper-V works without problems, as I've tried emulating Win7 and WP8; but VirtualBox says that VT-x is disabled and it can't run my VM. Just to double check, I've run Securable by GRC and the Intel utility and both says that I've got VT-x off. Here comes the problem: VT-x is ON in my BIOS, and it worked flawlessly before upgrading to Windows 8! Any kind of suggestion? EDIT: My CPU supports VT-x: http://ark.intel.com/products/52219

• More than 3 seconds "Initial Connection" time (webpagetest.org)

  I'm having a weird issue with a vBulletin forum, on a 2? Xeon E5645 w/ 16GB RAM, cPanel and LiteSpeed webserver; It takes too long to start loading... When I tested it with webpagetest.org I saw that for every request there's a 3 second "Initial connection" delay, which I don't know why is happening. Here's a screenshot: CPU Load is between 0.03 and 0.05, I've got several GB of free RAM, practical no I/O activity, and this delay can occur even with only one visitor on the forum. Where do you suggest I start searching? What could be the reason for this kind of delay? I don't think it's the webserver, or the forum because there's another website on the server (total 2 sites) which is WordPress based, and has exactly the same issue with the 3 second initial connection delay. I believe it's OS related, but need a clue on where to start looking. Thanks in advance :)

RAM is 64GB. The memory consumption increases gradually and we run out of memory. Then only rebooting releases all the memory, but then process of memory consumption starts again and reaches 63-64GB in less than a day. Parameters detail: key_buffer_size=16M innodb_buffer_pool_size=3GB inndb_buffer_pool_instances=3 max_connections=1000 innodb_flush_method=O_DIRECT innodb_change_buffering=inserts read_buffer_size=2M read_rnd_buffer_size=256K It's a serious production server issue that I am facing. • Ubuntu server very slow out of the blue sky (Rails, passenger, nginx)

  I run Ubuntu server 8.04 on Linode with multiple Rails apps under Passenger + nginx. Today I've noticed it takes quite a lot of time to load a page (5-10 secs). And it's not only websites, ssh seems to be affected too. Having no clue why this may be happening, I started to check different things. I checked how the log files are rotated, I checked if there's enough free disk space and memory. • Xeon X5550 vs Six-core Opteron for database server

  I'm specing out a database server, and the price works out to be reasonably close between an Intel X5550 Quad-core and an AMD 2425HE (2.1Ghz) Six-core Opteron. I've been looking for some comparisons between the two, but the only thing useful I've found is an AnandTech Review of the 2435 which compares it to Intel Xeons, but concludes they both have their place. My load is MS SQL Server 2008, with an OLTP database that has about an equal amount of reading/writing (and it's a reasonably heavy load). So my question is, what is going to work better in this situation, assuming the drives are the same: Xeon X5550, with 16GB 1333Mhz RAM (Dell R510) or an Opteron 2425HE (2.1Ghz) or 2439SE (2.8Ghz) with 16GB of 800Mhz RAM? (Dell 2970) Note: the 2439 adds $500, but the overall pricing works out that it's not that much more than the R510. Using the 2425HE, the Dell 2970 server is slightly less than the similarly-equipped R510). If it adds a decent amount of performance, it's worthwhile to go faster. (single CPU, in both cases).

  I am reviewing quote for a server upgrade. (RHEL). The server will have both Apache and MySQL on it, but the reason for upgrade is to increase DB performance. CPU has been upgraded massively, but I know that disk speed is also a factor. So RAID 10 is faster performance than RAID 5, but how much difference does the drive speed make? (The 15k discs in the RAID 5 config is at the top of my budget btw, hence not considdering 4x15k discs in RAID 10, which I assume would be the optimum.)

• Configure TV Capture card to not use external audio jack for TV audio output

  I had this working with MythTV on Ubuntu 9.1. Then a power surge killed the motherboard. After replacing the motherboard, ram and cpu, the card does not produce any audio except through the output jack on the back of the card. I do not want to use a cable to go from the back of the card to the audio in on the built in sound card of the new mother board. FYI, the old motherboard did not have an on-board sound card. There was a separate audio card installed. There's some configuration that has to be done to have it work the same way again. I just have no idea where to start.   I have tried using Multirow Bookmarks Toolbar Plus and Roomy Bookmarks Toolbar Firefox add-ons, but the problem is that they are constantly stressing my CPU (even when idling). It probably has something to do with version 11 of the browser. Anyway, is there some clean way to increase the height of the bookmarks toolbar and allow it to display bookmarks on multiple rows? I've read a lot of articles that refer to userChrome.css and I have tried a dozen solutions, but none worked because they were outdated. Please help me with this.

• moving to a new dedicated server and need advice on the new setup

  I currently have a dedicated server that we have outgrown and we are moving to another server. Our current setup was a 8gb W2008R2 server running a W2008R2 IIS virtual machine using VMWare. We are moving to a 2 cpu 24 gb server with W2012 R2 on Hyper-V. On our virtual machine we are running iis 7.5 and sql server. Sql Server seems to want to eat up all the memory so I had to cap it at 2gb, which doesn't seem sufficient. My question is, when I move the virtual machine to the new server, should I create 2 virtual machines, one for sql server and one for IIS? Or should I leave them both on the same virtual machine? Or even, put the Sql Server on the dedicated server and run the IIS in the vm? I'd like some input on how this should be done, I've not got the experience needed to make the right call. Thanks!

So, even though I'm not a big fan of the ubuntu netbook interface, I would be willing to use it if it's lighter (on RAM and CPU) than the desktop version. I know there are some very light linux distros available out there, but I'd like to stick with ubuntu both for it's community and for the support I have available here at my workplace. So, is Ubuntu Netbook Remix lighter on system resources than Ubuntu Desktop?

• System shuts down immediately after few sconds

  I have a computer with following specification and was working fine after re-installing the system and refitting sink fan unit. Recently it shuts down automatically after a few seconds. I checked PSU by shorting pin no.s 13 & 14 as well as 14 & 15. It worked well means the PSU fan moves. But I never checked the voltages at different wires. I refitted the heat sink fan by applying thermal paste. but it behaved the same. Again I refitted the Heat Sink Fan, then it worked for 2 minutes and again shut down. Now it shuts down immediately after switching on. Mother board : M26GTM-3VP CPU : AMD athlon PSU : 450 watt Can anyone help?
