  • 10.10 freezing when sftp downloading

    My ubuntu 10.10 is freezing during downloading from my other computer on sftp. I thought it might be some nautilus issues so I tried it via command line and I got the same thing - after few minutes the whole computer freezes. Mostly the numlock led is blinking (I've heard somewhere that this means a kernel panic), but not in 100% cases. I dunno if that helps but here is a log from /var/log/message in the time that this happened. At least I hope so - it wasn't that big, when it happened before. But this looks quite "errorish", right?   • Interview with Tomas Ulin at the MySQL Innovation Day

    MySQL Innovation Day held on June 5, 2012 was a great event for the MySQL engineers, users and customers to gather, share and network. I was able to get a few minutes with Tomas Ulin, Vice President of MySQL Engineering at Oracle, to ask him some questions. Here are the highlights of my interview with Tomas. Monica: This was the first MySQL Innovation Day, correct?  Why now, what was the strategy behind hosting this kind of event? Tomas: In the last year, we have rolled out an incredible number of MySQL events worldwide – some targeted at developers that are new to MySQL and others for the MySQL savvy. At the MySQL Innovation Day, our first event of this kind,, we had a number of our key engineers presenting lightning talks delivering previews of key new features as well as discussing roadmap. Our goal is to keep an open dialogue with the MySQL community. In fact, we are hosting a two-day conference, another first, for the MySQL community called MySQL Connect on Sept. 29-30 in San Francisco. If you attended the MySQL Innovation Day and liked what we did, you are going to love MySQL Connect. We’ll have a lot more of our engineers and many users and community members presenting hour long sessions and hands on labs. Our engineers will be presenting new MySQL features as well offer previews of upcoming enhancements. Monica: What's the big take-away from today's MySQL Innovation Day? Tomas: I hope the most important takeaway for attendees was to see that Oracle has been driving, and continues to drive MySQL innovation with a steady stream of new great GA and Development Milestone releases. Monica: What were attendees most interested in? What feedback did they have? Tomas: Feedback from attendees was incredibly positive and encouraging. In particular, they liked the interaction with the MySQL engineers and were also excited about the new early access features in MySQL 5.6 and MySQL Cluster 7.3. In addition, sessions delivered by MySQL users like Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter were very well received. For example, Pinterest talked about using MySQL to scale from 0 to billions of page views/month, Twitter talked about “Scaling twitter with MySQL” and Facebook discussed the many options to implement MySQL master failover solutions. The presentations are already available for download while some of the session videos will be made available on the MySQL Innovation Day web page shortly. Monica: How would you distinguish the use of MySQL vs. Oracle Database? What key factors should customers consider? Tomas: MySQL and Oracle Database complement each other. They are very different products, best suited to different use cases. Customers can choose world-class solutions from Oracle to fulfill a variety of needs. MySQL is a great choice for enterprise web-based, custom and embedded apps. Oracle Database is the leading choice for enterprise packaged applications such as ERP, CRM as well as high-end data warehousing and business intelligence applications. Monica: What are the highlights of the current MySQL 5.6 Development Milestone Release and early access features for MySQL Cluster 7.3? Tomas: MySQL 5.6 development milestone release builds on MySQL 5.5 by improving: Optimizer for better Performance, Scalability Performance Schema for better instrumentation InnoDB for better transactional throughput Replication for higher availability, data integrity NoSQL options for more flexibility We announced some new early access features in MySQL 5.6, including binary log group commit.     The MySQL Connect conference is taking place September 29-30 in San Francisco. We asked a few questions about the event to Oracle’s VP of MySQL Engineering Tomas Ulin. Hi Tomas, to start with, what is MySQL Connect? A: MySQL Connect is a conference delivered by Oracle, with and for the MySQL Community. We’ll have over 60 technical breakout sessions, Birds-of-a-feather sessions and Hands-On labs running throughout the two days, plus the keynotes. So it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn a huge amount in only two days, and to network with Oracle engineers, users, customers and partners. When will the program be available online?   • CertMgr fails trying to import an SPC file

    We have an SPC files which came with the Cisco IP Communicator installer. It needs to be imported into the localMachine ROOT store. However, which the certmgr.exe is run against this SPC file, it errors out. Doesn't matter if it's run from within the installer or manually. The commands I've tried using are: certmgr.exe -add -all CDPcredentials.spc -s -r localMachine root The result displayed is: Error: Failed to save to the destination store CertMgr Failed There is no other information, no log file, nothing in the eventviewer. I's almost as if the ROOT store is in a read-only state. I would also like to point out that I'm able to import single certificates. Just not an SPC files, which contains multiple certificates. I have also tried different versions of the CertMgr utility. Running on Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit. Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • SPC 300nc webcam doesn't work on 64-bit Ubuntu 11.10

    It seems that this solution to webcam problems in Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't work in the 64 bit version. If i run the following command: "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype" all i get is: "ld.so: object '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored." and if i try: "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype" I get the same problem :( Does anyone have a solution?

  • Relation between .p7b and .spc digital certificate files

    My company have just renewed their digital certificate from Thawte. The previous certificate I was using had an 'spc' extension. The new certificate I've been handed ends in a 'p7b'. Although I can use this p7b file directly for signing, I was just wondering whether there's some way to convert this to an spc file which I can then sign with as I was doing previously. Is it a recommended practice to use p7b directly for signing? Secondly, what exactly is the relation, if any, between the two types of files?

  • Double root folder vs single root folder

    On my Linux box, in bash, I have access to a "double root" folder denoted by two forward slashes: tomas:~ $ cd / tomas:/ $ ls bin/ cdrom@ ... tomas:/ $ cd // tomas:// $ ls bin/ cdrom@ ... The content of the folder and its subfolder is identical to the "normal" single slash root. The double slash does not go away when I access its subfolders. The annomaly does not repeat itself with three or more slashes; these are simple synonyms for the root: tomas:// $ cd home/tomas tomas://home/tomas $ cd /// tomas:/ $ cd //// tomas:/ $ What kindof place is it? Is it a bug? Can anyone explain the annomaly?

  • reading a line, tokenizing and assigning to struct in C

    line is fgets'd, and running in a while loop with counter n, d is a struct with 2 char arrays, p and q. Basically, in a few words, I want to read a line, separate it into 2 strings, one up until the first space, and the rest of the line. I clean up afterwards (\n from the file becomes \'0'). The code works, but is there a more idiomatic way to do this?   • Ubuntu won't start

    I've had Ubuntu installed, using WUBI, for some time now - a few months or so. It's worked fine until now, allowing me to login, use it's features etc... Two days ago, I turned on my computer and started Ubuntu. It loaded the GUI fine but just showed the loading screen and even after waiting 10 mins on this screen it still wouldn't show me the login page. I am enthusiastic about web design and development and all of my work, along with my portfolio is stored in Ubuntu. Cheers, Tomas EDIT: I am using 12.04 LTS.

  • JRockit R28 "Ropsten" released

    R28 is a major release (as indicated by the careless omissions of "minor" and "revision" numbers. The formal name would be R28.0.0). Our customers expect grand new features and innovation from major releases, and "Ropsten" will not disappoint. One of the biggest challenges for IT systems is after the fact diagnostics. That is - Once something has gone wrong, the act of trying to figure out why it went wrong. Monitoring a system and keeping track of system health once it is running is considered a hard problem (one that we to some extent help our customers solve already with JRockit Mission Control), but doing it after something occurred is close to impossible. The most common solution is to set up heavy logging (and sacrificing system performance to do the logging) and hope that the problem occurs again. No one really thinks that this is a good solution, but it's the best there is. Until now. Inspired by the "Black box" in airplanes, JRockit R28 introduces the Flight Recorder. Flight Recorder can be seen as an extremely detailed log, but one that is always on and that comes without a cost to system performance. With JRockit Flight Recorder the customer will be able to get diagnostics information about what happened _before_ a problem occurred, instead of trying to guess by looking at the fallout. Keywords that are important to the customer are: • Extremely detailed, always on, diagnostics information • No performance overhead • Powerful tooling to visualize the data recorded. • Enables diagnostics of bugs and SLA breaches after the fact.   • What is an elegant way to install non-repository software in 12.04?

    Perhaps I missed something when Canonical removed the "Create launcher" option from the right click menu, because I've really been missing that little guy. For me, it was the preferred way to install software that comes not in a .deb, but in a tar.gz, for example. (Note: in that tar.gz I have a folder with the compiled files, I'm NOT compiling from source) I just downloaded the new Eclipse IDE and extracted the tar.gz to my /usr folder. Now, I'd like to add it to my desktop and dash so it can be started easily. Intuitively I would right click the desktop and create a launcher. After this I'd copy the .desktop to /usr/share/applications. However, creating a launcher is not possible. My question: How would you install an already compiled tar.gz that you have downloaded from the internet? Below are a few things I've seen, but these are all more time-consuming than the right click option. If you have any better ideas, please let me know. Thanks! Manual copy & create a .desktop file: manually Simply extract the archive to /usr. Create a new text file, adding something along the lines of the code block below: [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Terminal=false Exec="/usr/local/eclipse42/eclipse" Name="Eclipse 4.2" Icon=/home/tomas/icons/eclipse.svg Rename this file to eclipse42.desktop and make it executable. I have checked all event viewer logs on remote PC, no information related this. Where do I start searching for problem? Does Windows has some kind of permission monitor tool?   • SIP server ("gateway") for joining accounts

Is it possible to install some sort of SIP server/gateway/proxy (on a linux server), that would register those 4 accounts and I would be able to connect to it as if it was 1 account? I have added $ to share name to hide it from other users, but actually this is not solution because such shares can be easily discovered by other OS or some tools on Win.   • How do i have 4GB of video memory with a 1GB video card?

    I ran the direct X diagnostic tool to take a look at my graphics capabilities and its telling me that the approximate video memory is clocked in at 4096MB. That doesn't make any sense, how is that possible? The only things that i can think of were that DirectX was inaccurate so i looked at the graphics statistics of my computer on CPU-Z which was included with the motherboard and that's telling me i have "negative" 1988MB. Not only is that not 4096MB, but its giving me a negative number and i know for a fact that you can't have a negative amount of memory???!!! The only things i can think of that would be amplifying my video memory output is the PCIe 3.0 bus, or that the motherboard is somehow including the on board video chip set with the video card which only then is only 2GB of video memory, which still has to be being amplified by something. Any suggestions?

  • Not Dead, Just Busy

    So I didn’t die in a freak smelting accident yet, but I have been dealing with a lot of different things.  I had to take a bit of a break to deal with the cat death issue.  I am not fully recovered, because well it just happened a few months ago.  It kind of sucked.  Plus the apartment feels a lot bigger. Then you have the whole New York Comic Con thing where I had to plan some cosplay costumes.  I have been trying to find time to hang out with friends and have a social life.  That plus I built an entire presentation for iOS development for New York Code Camp.  I am also planning a couple MS Community dinners (namely one a week from Tuesday) plus a give camp.  I am also planning a vacation around SPS UK plus I will be at SPC.  Life is just incredibly hectic and when you factor in dating to the mix it’s gotten insane to the point where some day I just have to go dark.  Hence the lack of blogging.  I am just trying to keep up with everything and everyone without losing myself.   • Emacs editor copy and deletion

    I am a huge fan of emacs.. But even after 1 year of practising on emacs I am unable to solve these three annoying issues about emacs please help me! 1.Whenever I want to copy the content from emacs into other things such as a website textarea I have to use GUI copy button because ctrl+w doesn't work. Is there any way to do this from emacs-command line. 2.Whenever I delete something using ctrl+shft+SPC or ctrl+k etc I don't want it to be stored in kill ring how do I do it(I know ctrl+D does this but it deletes only one char at a time)? 3.Whenever I select text by mouse and press backspace then text goes into kill ring(Which I want to change as mentioned) but same doesn't happen when I select text with ctrl+SPC(set mark) and then ctrl+f/ctrl+b etc. Please help me!   • Can I recover a zpool after it's been exported, given that devices have not been reallocated?

    I had a zpool we'll call 'testpool'. testpool had 3 devices included in it, and a single zfs called 'test'. I needed to move 'test' to a new, smaller pool. I wanted to name the new pool the same name 'testpool'. Basically did the following. zfs send testpool@backup > /tmp/test-dump zpool export -f testpool zpool create -f testpool newdevice zfs receive -F testpool < /tmp/test-dump Unfortunately I found out that the testpool@backup snapshot was the wrong snapshot. Too old. I have yet to reallocate the three devices that were in the OLD testpool. (None of these 3 devices are 'newdevice', they are a separate 3.) Is there any way I can recover data in those devices? I'm thinking since I named the new, smaller pool the same as the old zpool, I'm pretty much SOL. But if not, that would be nice to know. Edit: More info I did a 'zpool import' and got this. bash-3.00# zpool import pool: testpool id: 14781458723915654709 state: ONLINE action: The pool can be imported using its name or numeric identifier. config: testpool ONLINE c5t8d0 ONLINE c5t9d0 ONLINE c5t10d0 ONLINE So I'm guessing I just need the syntax to import this zpool using its numeric identifier, while giving it a new name.   • Solaris 10: How to remove devices from a zpool with /usr currently mounted?

    I use Solaris 10 on SPARC. I have /usr legacy mounted on a zpool 'usr-pool'. I now need to move some of the devices in usr-pool to another zpool which is running out of room. What is the safest way for me to do this? I already know that (since my zpool is not mirrored) I need to destroy and recreate the zpool. I know how to backup and restore a zfs snapshot. However... I'm stumped on how to unmount usr-pool without losing access to the commands I need on /usr to complete the backup/restore. Cursory research indicated that I should boot to OpenBoot (init 0) and then 'boot cdrom -s'. I did this but none of the zpools are accessible on that runlevel. I also read I could just copy /usr to another location, symlink /usr to that location, then do my backup/restore. Is that safe to do? I would appreciate some guidance. S.
