  • How to troubleshoot web server lock-up (Debian Squeeze)

    Every once in a while, my web server slows so significantly, it seems locked up. Can't SSH in, no sites being served. It's a VPS that started out as Debian 5 which I upgraded to testing (squeeze). It's a typical LAMP set-up with the sole purpose of running a couple of wordpress sites. One time when it locked up, I got to one of the sites, but it was wordpress complaining it couldn't establish a database connection. So it seemed as if something was really chewing up the CPU and mysqld either timed out, or possibly failed and couldn't restart. But since I couldn't SSH in I feel more inclined to attribute it to CPU. But the only processes running now, aside from OS and kernel stuff: apache mysqld python (for fail2ban) sshd exim4 It has 512M of RAM and 1.5 GB of swap. Every time I check on it, it has plenty of free memory and is using virtually no swap (usually 2-3M). And since I am running fail2ban I don't think I'm getting ddosed. I did find this in my logwatch email this morning (it locked up late last night, when there would have been very little traffic): 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a0ebc>] ? oom_kill_process+0x7e/0x23d 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a1505>] ? __out_of_memory+0x12a/0x141 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a1586>] ? out_of_memory+0x6a/0x94 I didn't find anything else suspicious.   • Does SCP lock the file it is transfering?

    Have a situation where we have an application log sitting out on an AIX server. The log is being continually written to from the application, and we have users on Windows who want to view the file. What they've been doing is using WinSCP to transfer the file to their desktop and they open it using a text editor. What I think might be happening is scp is locking the file for the duration of the transfer, and the application ceases to be able to write to the file. The reason I believe this is the log file will stop growing at random points during the day. Is that what perhaps is going on?

  • How to lock Windows7 from installing anything.

    A family member continually needs me to reinstall his PC after it gets viruses and spyware. He claims that he never downloads anything but evidence suggests otherwise. Unless there is some way that watching 'videos' can get spyware on there. AFAIK the computer is kept up to date. Possible solutions? Make a login where its impossible for him to install anything. Windows 7 standard account doesn't appear to be enough. Is a standard account enough here? I tried this once before and he still seemed to get IE toolbars installed up the wazoo Somehow make an automated image where if he 'messes up' or even on log off the computer restores the whole drive image. Similar to what I've seen in Kinko's Something I've not thought of.... And I know you are all going to say 'stop fixing it you are an enabler'... yes I know but I'm not going to have another fight with my wife over helping her family... right now I'm doing this to keep her happy not the idiot with the 'video' addiction ;-) So the name of the game is minimizing my overhead.

  • Lock down Wiki access to password only but remain open to a subnet via .htaccess

    Basically we have a Wiki that has some sensitive information stored in it - not the best I know but my predecessor set it up. I want to be able to request password access from any one who is not on the local network subnet. Those on the local subnet should be able to proceed without entering a password. The following .htaccess does not seem to work any more as it is letting non-local access without requiring the password: AuthName "Our Wiki" AuthType Basic AuthUserFile /path/to/passwd/file AuthGroupFile /dev/null Require valid-user Allow from 192.168 Satisfy Any order deny,allow And I cannot work out why. The WikkaWiki it is supposed to be protecting was recently upgraded, which clobbered the .htaccess file so I restored the above from memory/googling. Maybe I am missing an important directive?   • How can I make it difficult to install a new operating system on a certain computer?

    I want to host a website on a desktop computer running Ubuntu with a Windows virtual machine. I will give away the computer in exchange for a number of months of remote web hosting. I want to add some kind of lock (hardware or otherwise) so that the end users will have difficulty just reinstalling Windows and using the machine as they want, in contradiction to the contract. Ideally, I'd want the machine to die if reinstallation of the OS is attempted. It doesn't have to be completely insurmountable, but it has to be difficult enough to prevent casual reinstallation. Perhaps on bootup the system can check whether certain files exist on the computer and refuse to boot if they do not. I don't know if this is possible, but maybe BIOS is password protected, and searches for files before boot up. The files it looks for could be date sensitive, i.e. require remote replacement on a schedule.

  • remap Caps Lock on OSX 10.6.8

    I have for a long time used KeyRemap4MacBook in Snow Leopard. I have always stayed on top of OS update. Today, suddenly my CapsLock no longer was remapped to Control, but it was just a regular CapsLock. So I went into the settings for KeyRemap4MacBook and noticed that CapsLock could no longer be set. Instead it gave a link to PCKeyboardHack. So I downloaded that and tried to use it. But when I try to select the Control key to remap to, it just becomes some kind erratic delete key or something. Definitely not a Control key.

  • Door with keypad that can be controlled by website

    Hi, I'm looking for some kind of the door/system that would allow us to install a door lock with a keypad. When somebody goes to that door they would enter a number that would open the door. The twist is that we need to be able to change the key combination that opens the door from a website. It needs to allow me to programmatically change the key combination required to open the door without somebody physically going there to do it. Any ideas what kind of hardware/software we would need to do this? Thanks a lot!

  • Windows 7 / Media Center lock problem

    Hi, we have a Win7 with Media Center that is connected to a large screen. It displays a corporate slideshow near the coffeemachine. When the computer is started it automatically logs in and starts the slideshow. The problem is that on irregular time intervals (once a day, some days not) the slideshow stops and it switches to the login screen and shows which user is logged on. We don't know why this is happening. We first thought someone on the network was trying to open RDC connection to the machine, because it is the same sympthon like when you take over a machine by RDC with a different user, but nobody is doing that. Screensaver is disabled, energy settings "always on" Anybody ideas why this is happening?

  • Lock ups, crashing, transferring files using TrueCrypt with iSCSI

    I have looked into this error and it seems that it hasn't been discussed yet - or at least I can't find any information relating. I'm having issues transferring files, usually larger files over a couple of hundred MB. Here is the setup: QNAP 410 as iSCSI Target with multiple LUNs. (CRC is turned on (Data Digest and Header Digest) Server 2003 with iSCSI Initiator version 2.08 - build 3825 (I'm copying files from anothe machine to shares on Server 2003 = into TrueCrypt volume ergo onto the NAS) I have mounted the LUN and formatted it with TrueCrypt using NTFS (Full format, not a quick one). What happens is some files, mainly RAR/Compressed files, appear as if they copy but fail. I've tested this in a number of ways and can repeat the process every time. So I thought to check transfer over iSCSI without TrueCrypt in between, a plain NTFS format - no problem at all. So it would seem TrueCrypt is at least part of the problem here. I haven't tried copying directly from the server yet, I will try that. I also haven't tried it without CRC but fail to see how that would affect this. I will update with my findings later. In the meantime does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? Thanks for your time. Update: I copied a set of files, the ones I was having issues with, to the server then from there I copied those into two places within the TrueCrypt volume (Mounted on the NAS). A seperate directory create in the root of the volume The same initial directory I was using in the first instance Both worked fine. So it now seems clear that this is a link between TrueCrypt, iSCSI and Windows Shares. I say this because I originally setup the whole system using TrueCrypt volume files, not iSCSI. I changed it as it didn't suit my requirements - day wasted as well. While I had this setup though I copied my entire file set to the volume files and all files copied without error - over the network, from a pc, to the server where TrueCrypt had the volume files mounted from the NAS. I didn't bother turning off CRC on the iSCSI system as I highly doubt that is the cause in light of this finding. So any ideas?

    when "Services" opens, it's in Extended View. i prefer Standard view. i also prefer this column layout: Status | Startup Type | Log On As | Name | Description because when I expand all columns via Ctrl+(numeric keypad "+") what i need to see most i can view without being forced to scroll to the right. Problem: my preferred layout does not persist. QUESTION: how can i force Windows (2008 R2, 7, XP, et cetera) to remmember my settings? thnx / g.

  • Multi Monitor setup goes crazy after locking/unlocking Vista machine

    Give me a 10-blade quad-processor quad-core Opteron centre and ask me to configure failover/load balancing and I'd be happy to, but the following problem has got me completely stumped. My Vista Business Professional machine, running Ultramon, has three monitors attached. When I lock the machine (to go to the delicious cafe around the corner), the monitor layout stays correct. When I unlock it, I watch as all my screens flicker (as they are being re-configured), and Vista chooses some crazy layout for the monitors. The most recent one is below, but it's never consistant. Any ideas what might cause this? It's Vista Business, with UltraMon 3.0 (exiting Ultramon makes no difference).

A hugely annoying hurtle I'm encountering is this: When I resize my XP windows at all (usually by mistake), it automatically logs me off (or Locks), requiring me to log in.   • E-mail message of failed lock not identifying affected Lotus Notes documents

    I have a user who was sent several messages to his Outlook account with the following subject: Changes made to the database xxxx have NOT been incorporated into the database. There was a conflict detected. Your changes may be found in body of this message. A document link to the original document is attached to the end of the message. Unfortunately, besides the link, the body of the email is blank and the link URL is of this form: Notes:///482567CC001B4104. The link seems to be making reference to the database replica ID and clicking on the link opens up the database and not directly to the affected document. I'm finding that the message is not very useful in terms of identifying the affected document. Can anyone advise me on the ways to identify the affected documents or configure the system so that it would identify/link the affected documents?

  • LInux (Ubuntu Karmic) equivalent to Pawsense

    I now work from a home office - much to the delight of my cats. One in particular likes to come for a hug several times a day. That in itself is fine but he tends to sit on my laptop keyboard whilst I'm working on my desktop and vice-versa. Also he'll walk across any keyboard I'm actually using at the time. I've found Pawsense and would like to know if anyone can suggest a Linux equivalent (or some incantations to achieve the same). Training him out of sitting on the keyboard is likely to prove fruitless (a suggested here). He's far more pig-headed than I am. This conversation discusses some utilities like xlock et al but I'd prefer if possible to have something more along the lines of Pawsense that doesn't lock the keyboard but "simply" intercepts cat-like typing.   • Server 2008 locks me out when not using the machine for 10 minutes after installing SP2

    I have recently installed Service Pack 2 on my Windows Server 2008 machine (which I use actively for development, and i'm always logged on to). Now, after this installation, when I don't use the machine for some time (let's say, 10 minutes), it locks itself so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del and log back in. I have already checked the Screen Saver settings, and it's "None", as it always has been. I also looked into power settings and everything looks right (20 mins to turn off monitor, and i haven't found any settings regarding locking me in there). Do you have any idea what I can do so that it won't lock me out after not using the machine for a while? Thanks! Daniel

    I've just installed nexus dock (a similar application like rocketdock), after playing with the preferences i've come across a very curious option (under position & behavior) that says: Prevent maximized windows from overlapping the dock. With it enabled, any application I maximize(and i do mean any) won't overlap the dock, it's really great. So i'm thinking perhaps there's a software that does this kind of feature which is really ideal for keeping my workspace really organized. I really hate repositioning and resizing my windows everytime. Of course there's always the manual way of doing these but it's just too much of a bother when someone from the family uses the computer. Do you know any software that does this? even a software that can just save/remember window positions would also be nice too.

  • RDP locks up login, doesn't unlock on Windows

    From time to time, my system, when I try to login TRHOUGH or AFTER a remote connection, locks up the login session. I can't login anymore, the screen turns black (the monitor is still active, the image is black). Especially in the recent case, the system did not come back from the lock-up, and I had to reset the computer. Any idea what might be the issue here? More information: Both Computers are Windows 7, The RDP Server has a wired connection, the Client has either Wireless or Wired. The network card involved on the server is a "Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)" card built-in on an ASRock Mainboard. I'm using either local LAN or internet connection through NAT/Router.

  • PC Speaker sounds when machine locks up.

    What would cause my PC speaker to sound a low frequency continuous tone as my system locks up? Generally what will happen is I'll notice the application I'm using will stop responding but explorer will be partially responsive, then after a few more actions explorer stops responding, and the last click will cause the pc speaker to emit a low constant tone as the machine locks up completely. The only resolve at that point is to restart. Its not a thermal issue, I'm reading the cpu, and hdd temps with software and hardware monitors. AV and malware scans come up clean. I've swapped out my ram, reseated all my components. Used sfc with no results. chkdisk locks up at 3% and defragmenting does the same, but I can read the drive without trouble (I know this as I've done av/malware scans and I also backed everything up since this started happening) I'm mostly just interested to learn, if anyone knows, why the pc speaker would sound during the lock up. windows xp sp2

Application gets hang and does not read data from socket every few hours. In thread dump, we have found below stack trace. Kindly help. We are using 16 core machine and load on the system is around 30-40 at the time of issue. We use command ss dst <ip> to find out recv-q. Recently we have been facing issues with recv-q size getting hung, were in receive buffer gets stuck at some point of time. But recvQ size is not decreasing and as a result we are losing a lot of hits from the other side, our application is not accepting any data.
