• Ati Radeon HD 5850 + two screens with different resolutions

  How can I use these screens like I would use in Windows? When I turn off "copy" it gives me an error. I have tried community drivers and AMD drivers but both fail at this task. I use Ubuntu 12.04 with latest updates. It did not work in Ubuntu 11.10 either. I use DVI to connect my PC to my monitor and HDMi to my TV. It is a Sony Bravia, bought in 2008. I can't remember the model. Also, this same problem occurs when I connect to two Full HD monitors, both DVI. I cannot turn of the cloning of screens. How do I turn it off? Windows can do that.

• Problem in installing Ubuntu 12 using USB

  I have a Sony laptop (VPCEH25EN) and i am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I downloaded the iso named "ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso". For installing i created a bootable USB using UltraISO. When i booted the USB it hangs and shows " Booting from USB ", I even left it for hours and it didn't moved a bit. When I booted the ISO in Virtual Box, it ran well. I even used other tools to make a bootable USB, then it says " BOOTMNGR missing ". Please help, I am new to Ubuntu and my optical drive is fried. Thanks in advance..

• Dual booting Ubuntu 12.04: UEFI and Legacy

  I'm trying to dual boot Ubuntu 12.04 (or 12.10) with Windows 8 on a new Sony Vaio, but have run into some problems :) Specifically, my problems seem to come from choosing UEFI or Legacy as the Bootmode in the BIOS. Here is what I have found so far: Windows 8 needs to boot using UEFI, and doesn't work in Legacy mode Ubuntu (both 12.04 and 12.10) needs to boot using Legacy, and won't boot (at least from the live disk) in UEFI mode I have been able to boot Ubuntu using a live USB disc, provided that I change the Bootmode to Legacy. I haven't committed to installing it yet, because I don't really understand the consequences. My main concerns are that instead of simply selecting Windows or Ubuntu in Grub, I would also have to change my Bootmode every single time, which seems like a lot more trouble than it should be. So, the question: how can I install Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 in UEFI boot mode?

• Mts mblaze doesn't connect to internet

  I've sony vaio vpceb24en laptop, I'm using dual boot system with windows 7 and ubuntu. Firstly I installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS then upgraded to 12.04 & 12.04.1 afterwards. I have mts mblaze dongle. I have set up the mts connection profile under the mobile broadband. My problem is : Sometimes my connection is easily made & I use it, sometime it never connects. So I have to restart my system then it connects to internet sometimes. But now it's not connecting even I restarted my system many times, just it shows trying to connect icon once, then never tries to connect. while in windows it's working fine. Please someone help me out how to resolve this problem as I'm very new to linux. Thanks, Chetan

• Suspend fails (reboot on resume) and no hibernate option

  Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 removed hibernate option for me and introduced the problem where by after entering standby (being indicated by blinking amber LED on my laptop) I cannot resume my session. Instead I get a crash and system reboots (crash comes instantly on trying to resume). Tried clean install to eliminate possibility of an upgrade issue but its still persistent. All latest updates installed. Tried looking for an answer to this but still no joy. Laptop is Sony VGN-FW41E.

• Huwaei Modem working fine!

  yesterday I installed Ubuntu 12 in my sony vaio lappy. I have Huwaei E173 3G modem, simply inserted that modem into usb slot, after a few seconds modem started blinking finding as activated. I opened network profile and created a new network under 'Mobile broadband' tab everything was automated and I felt awesome, infact I used net for a while. Next morning, I placed modem into usb, nothing happened, no sign of modem presence even but modem is blinking, I tried creating a new connection once again but attained no luck. • Volume control keyboard shortcuts not working in 14.04?

  I run Ubuntu 14.04 on a Sony Vaio CS series laptop. Normally, the volume is controlled by pressing Funcion+F2, F3, and F4 for mute, volume down, and volume up respectively. I accidentally reassigned the volume up keyboard shortcut to a different key. I tried resetting the keyboard shortcut by going into the keyboard shortcuts editor in Ubuntu and pressing Function+F4, but that didn't work. My mute function and my volume down functions both work flawlessly, but volume up doesn't work at all. Please don't answer telling me to change the keyboard shortcut in the Keyboard Shortcuts manager, as I have already tried that. Thanks for your help!

  In this talk Jon Skeet talks about the advantages of reading programming language specifications. I have an Ebook Reader (a Sony, one of the better ones for PDF's, though EPub is still much better). Does anyone know any sources for specifications, optimised for ebook readersm that can be downloaded? I expect someone would have gone through the effort of optimising the websites for ebook reader reading, ideally: EPUB Format (though pdf will do) Annotated (eg XML) Most specifications I find don't have obvious download links. I'm having trouble googling because everytime I seach for say: "F# Spec EPUB" or "Python Spec PDF" most of the results are for the EPUB or PDF specifications.

  UPDATED: HP still sells 17" WUXGA laptops - details in the new paragraph at the end. Lenovo, Dell, Sony and Sager do not sell a 1920x1200 (WUXGA) laptop. I understand that manufacturers provide what there is market demand for. I also understand that HDTV and the 1080p standard is heavily influencing both monitor and laptop screen resolutions. • USB sound device not recognized

  I have a USB sound device that used to work back when I ran other versions of Ubuntu. Now I can only partially see the device. I have tried many things I saw in Google searches, but none solve my problem. cat /proc/asound/cards sees the device as card 0 aplay -l shows C-Media USB Audio as card 0 alsamixer sees the device asoundconf list does not show the device sound preferences shows no hardware asoundconf-gtk set the device to pulseaudio, but fails with python errors ending in ValueError: too many values to unpack in the function set_default_card. I think this is the cause of my problem. The device is a Sony virtual phones wireless headphone amplifier.

Hard-drive led doesn't glow. caps lock and scroll lock keys keep blinking. I've to manually restart my laptop. On restart, Ubuntu loads normally. What can I do to recover from present situation?

  Welcome, My problem appeared today - I was using Xubuntu for a long time, but find out that LXDE should be faster than Xfce, so I installed it. After installing I followed tutorial for removing Xfce, cause disk in my computer is very small and I wanted to release some free space. I used command from this tutorial: How to remove xubuntu-desktop? but instead of remove I entered purge command… and rebooted at the end. And I uninstalled whole my things. The problem is in installing system again - it's old Sony Vaio laptop (PCG-GR250) and I have broken CD-DVD drive. It's possible to boot from USB? I can access recovery mode, will this help me? Please answer fast, because it's my brother computer, and his going to kill me if I won't fix this fast :(

• Kernel freezes with nvidia optimus and bumblebee on 12.04

  I have a Sony VAIO with Intel i7-3520M and NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 640M LE]. I installed bumblebee and nvidia drivers. They work almost fine, but the system freezes like in a kernel panic once every day. I can play Dota 2 with primusrun on it with 20-30fps 1080p. But when I do something simple as expanding the KDE calendar widget from the bottom right corner, the system hangs a lot and windows borders get another border. The system freezes in not very intensive graphic tasks, for instance, ALT+TAB with KWin effects or pressing ALT+F2 for poping up the launcher. How can I solve this? Info: I use KDE.   I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop (Core 2 Duo Sony Vaio) and am having a problem with the external keyboard and mouse. When I first logged in the left mouse button does not work, this can be solved by unplugging the external keyboard/mouse's USB connector and then plugging it back in again. But Then randomly other problems happen. (Shift gets stuck, keys don't work etc) The keyboard and mouse are a generic brand wireless (A4 Tech) that I got for cheap. Both work OK under windows so this is a major pain.

  I've just installed Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows Vista. There were no previous versions of Ubuntu installed. My computer is a Sony Vaio all in one, with integrated sound card and speakers. I can't get any sound coming from the speakers, but if I plug headphones into the jack on the side of the computer and select "headphones" under "sound" in "system settings" I can get sound through them. I have been searching all day trying to find a fix but haven't had any luck. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Mat :-)

  I recently updated to 12.04 on my sony vaio VGN-N110G. I've had ubuntu on this laptop since 10.04 and haven't had any real problems. so i restarted my computer today and none of the unity desktop background showed up only the desktop with the files on it so i brought up the terminal and entered in unity -replace and restarted it and it came back up fine except that i noticed that my panel only had mail, volume, date/time, and power icons no wireless or bluetooth, i tried a couple of approaches to try and get it working again i tried nm-applet --sm-disable and it brought up a warning message, i'm not very skilled in code even though i've had ubuntu for four years but in the past versions it wasn't too big a problem

  I have had Ubuntu on my laptop for quite a while, it's just a standard install, no partitioning off, no wierdness of any other sort, just ubuntu. Today my computer started to lag really bad so I tried to restart it, but after bios loaded I just got an error that said "ERROR: No configuration file found No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!" After that it had "boot:" and a cursor, like it expects me to type something. Once again, this is just a normal install on my hard drive, not a VM or booting from USB. It's Ubuntu 12.04 on a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ240P Any help is appreciated!

  This has been a big question lurking at the back of my head. From what I see, GnuSTEP nowadays is primarily a "hobby" project of a small but tightly-knit group of people. However I haven't seen a large commercial (off-the-shelf) application that uses it, apart from the small applications that comes with the GnuSTEP distribution. Heck, since even Ubuntu doesn't really use it then is GnuSTEP really more than being a "hobby" framework? I know that Sony's SNAP at one brief moment uses GnuSTEP, but they killed the platform before it can do anything meaningful.

  I made a clean install on my Sony Vaio laptop, of Ubuntu 11.10 and when the installation was ready, it prompted to remove the usb I was installing the distro from, and press enter to reboot. After this reboot the first thing I got was the following error: error: couldn't read file error: you need to load the kernel first Press any key to continue.. After that it throws me back to the Grub select screen: Ubuntu, with linux 3.0.0-14-generic-pae recovery mode previous linux versions (none since I made a clean install) memory test If i choose the first option it shows only a black screen and never loads anything. If i reboot the same thing happens. Could I repair this using boot-repair? Is there any other way?   I remember the Playstation having 2MB ram and 1MB graphic memory. The Playstation 3 now has only 256MB ram and 256MB graphic memory, and I'm sure that the day the console was released, even laptop's "standard" capacity was at least 1GB. So why do they put so little memory in their machines, while developers would benefit a lot by having more ? Or is the memory that much faster than desktops and thus more expensive ? Or is it not that much worth it for developers ? What are the Sony/XBox/Nintendo engineers thinking that seems to be the same reason ?

• How to boot into Live USB/CD with UEFI on latest Vaio S series?

  I am unable to boot from USB/CD into a live Ubuntu session to proceed with install. Esc or F12 didn't work and I can't seem to be able to enter the bios settings. Sony Vaio S w/ Ivy Bridge (just one month old, Insyde H2O EFI?) I have read about: creating /EFI/boot on a fat16 stick http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12071096&postcount=2 installing rEFInd using the Alternate install CD (supposedly in order not to mess with W7 UEFI boot partition) It's pretty clear what I have to do afterwards http://askubuntu.com/a/157062 but I am at loss on how to simply boot into a Live Session then install.
