• Any tips on getting hired as a software project manager straight out of college?

  I graduated with a BS in compsci last September, and I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to find a job as a project manager ever since. I fell in love with software engineering (the formal practice behind it all, not just coding) in school, and I've dedicated the last 3-4 years of my life to learning everything I can about project management and gaining experience. I've managed several projects (with teams around 12 people) while in school, and I worked with my university's software engineering research lab. My résumé is also decent - I worked as a programmer before I went to school (I'm 27 now), and I did Google Summer of Code for 3 summers. I also have general "people management" experience via working as the photo editor for my university's newspaper for 2 years. My first problem with the job hunt is not getting enough interviews. I use careers.stackoverflow.com, which is awesome because I usually get contacted by non-HR people who know what they're talking about, but there's just not enough companies using it for me to get interviews on a regular basis. I've also tried sites like monster.com, and in a fit of desperation, I sent out no less than 60 applications to project management positions. I've gotten 3 automated rejection letters and that's it. At least careers.stackoverflow gets me a phone interview with 8/10 places I apply to. But the main (and extremely frustrating) problem is the matter of experience. I've successfully managed projects from start to finish (in my software engineering classes we had real customers come in with a real software need and we built it for them), but I've never had to deal with budgets and money (I know this is why HR people immediately turn me away). Most of these positions require 5+ years PM experience, and I've seen absurd things like 12+ years required. Interviews are also maddening. I've had so many places who absolutely loved me and I made it to the final round of interviews, and I left thinking things went extremely well and they'd consider me. However, when I check in with them a week later, they tell me "We really liked you and your qualifications are excellent, but we're hoping to find someone with more experience." The bad interviews I can understand - like the PM position that would have had me managing developers both locally and overseas - I had 3 interviews with them and the ENTIRE interview process was them asking me CS brainteasers and having me waste time on things like writing quicksort on paper or writing binary search trees. Even when I tried steering the discussion towards more relevant PM stuff, they gave me some vague generic replies and went back to the "We want to be Google/MS" crap. But when I have a GOOD interview, they say my "qualifications are excellent" but they want "more experience"...that makes me want to tear my hair out. What else can I DO? While I'm aiming for technically-involved PM positions (not just crunching budget numbers), I really don't want a straight development job because I like creating software from the very high-level vs. spending a lot of time debugging memory leaks. In fact, I can't even GET development positions that I'm qualified for because I make the mistake of telling them that my future career goals are as PM (which usually results in them saying something like "Well we already have PMs and this position isn't really set up to get you there." - which I take to mean "No, that's my job, stay away.") My apologies on the long rant, but I'm seriously hellbent on getting hired as a PM since it's both my career goal and the passion that keeps me awake at night. Any suggestions on what the heck else I can do? I'm currently writing a blog where I talk about my philosophies about software engineering, and I'm writing up specs for an iOS app which I will design, code, and show employers, but this takes an awful lot of time that I don't have.

• I keep on getting "save operation failure" after any change on my XCode Data Model

  I started using Core Data for iPhone development. I started out by creating a very simple entity (called Evaluation) with just one string property (called evaluationTopic). I had following code for inserting a fresh string: - (void)insertNewObject { // Create a new instance of the entity managed by the fetched results controller. NSError *error; if (![context save:&error]) { // Handle the error... } [self.tableView reloadData]; } This worked perfectly fine and by pushing the +button a new "My Repeating String" would be added to the table view and be in persistent store. I then pressed "Design - Add Model Version" in XCode. I added three entities to the existing entity and also added new properties to the existing "Evaluation" entity. Then, I created new files off the entities by pressing "File - New File - Managed Object Classes" and created a new .h and .m file for my four entities, including the "Evaluation" entity with Evaluation.h and Evaluation.m. Now I changed the model version by setting "Design - Data Model - Set Current Version". After having done all this, I changed my insertMethod: - (void)insertNewObject { // Create a new instance of the entity managed by the fetched results controller. Every time I want to add a row the simulator crashes and I get the following: "NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'This NSPersistentStoreCoordinator has no persistent stores. It cannot perform a save operation.'" I had this error before I knew about creating new version after changing anything on the datamodel, but why is this still coming up? Do I need to do any mapping (even though I just added entities and properties that did not exist before?). In the Apple Dev tutorial it sounds very easy but I have been struggling with this for long time, never worked after changing model version.

• How to manage multiple versions of the same record

  I am doing short-term contract work for a company that is trying to implement a check-in/check-out type of workflow for their database records. Here's how it should work... 1) A user creates a new entity within the application. There are about 20 related tables that will be populated in addition to the main entity table. 2) Once the entity is created the user will mark it as the master. 3) Another user can make changes to the master only by "checking out" the entity. Multiple users can checkout the entity at the same time. 4) Once the user has made all the necessary changes to the entity, they put it in a "needs approval" status. 5) After an authorized user reviews the entity, they can promote it to master which will put the original record in a tombstoned status. The way they are currently accomplishing the "check out" is by duplicating the entity records in all the tables. The primary keys include EntityID + EntityDate, so they duplicate the entity records in all related tables with the same EntityID and an updated EntityDate and give it a status of "checked out". When the record is put into the next state (needs approval), the duplication occurs again. Eventually it will be promoted to master at which time the final record is marked as master and the original master is marked as dead. This design seems hideous to me, but I understand why they've done it. When someone looks up an entity from within the application, they need to see all current versions of that entity. This was a very straightforward way for making that happen. But the fact that they are representing the same entity multiple times within the same table(s) doesn't sit well with me, nor does the fact that they are duplicating EVERY piece of data rather than only storing deltas. I would be interested in hearing your reaction to the design, whether positive or negative. I would also be grateful for any resoures you can point me to that might be useful for seeing how someone else has implemented such a mechanism. Thanks! Darvis

We need to serialize it to XML like <Entity title=""> <Entity title=""></Entity> <Entity title=""></Entity> </Entity> As i found out, standard DataTable.GetXML() returns something different. I thought about initializing class tree like Entity e = new Entity(ID, Title, ParentEntityID) and then serializing it. Table is about 3000 elems. Is there faster way?

• setfirstresult & setmaxresult in child collection

  I have and entity lets call it Entity, and a Child collection Children. I have a screen where the user has the Entity information, and a list with the Children collection, but that collection can be get very big, so i was thinking about using paging: get the first 20 elements, and lazy load the next only if the user explicitly presses the next button. So i created in the Entity Repository a function with this signature: IEnumerable<Child> GetChildren(Entity entity, int actualPage, int numberOfRecordsPerPage) I need to use the setfirstresult and setmaxresult, not in the Agregate root Entity, but in the child collection. But when i use those two configurations, they allways refer to the entity type of the HQL/Criteria query. Other alternative would be to create a HQL/Criteria query for the Child type, set the max and first result, then filter the ones who are in the Entity Children collection (by using subquery). But i wasn't able to do this filter. If it was a bidirectional association (Child refering the parent Entity) it would be easier. Any suggestions? Any

The first error (from MVC2008) is error C2661: 'ClientData::ClientData' : no overloaded function takes 4 arguments and the second, which pops up whatever changes I seem to make is error C2512: 'Entity' : no appropriate default constructor available Thanks.

As I understand in order to succeed doing so, App Engine needs to know in advance which entities will be updated together, so it knows to store them in a way that supports transactions. And therefore, user must declare that an entity belongs to the same entity group as another entity when you create the entity. • Ogre 3d and bullet physics interaction

  I have been playing around with Ogre3d and trying to integrate bullet physics. I have previously somewhat successfully got this functionality working with irrlicht and bullet and I am trying to base this on what I had done there, but modifying it to fit with Ogre. It is working but not correctly and I would like some help to understand what it is I am doing wrong. I have a state system and when I enter the "gamestate" I call some functions such as setting up a basic scene, creating the physics simulation. I am doing that as follows. void GameState::enter() { ... // Setup Physics btBroadphaseInterface *BroadPhase = new btAxisSweep3(btVector3(-1000,-1000,-1000), btVector3(1000,1000,1000)); btDefaultCollisionConfiguration *CollisionConfiguration = new btDefaultCollisionConfiguration(); btCollisionDispatcher *Dispatcher = new btCollisionDispatcher(CollisionConfiguration); btSequentialImpulseConstraintSolver *Solver = new btSequentialImpulseConstraintSolver(); World = new btDiscreteDynamicsWorld(Dispatcher, BroadPhase, Solver, CollisionConfiguration); ... createScene(); } In the createScene method I add a light and try to setup a "ground" plane to act as the ground for things to collide with.. as follows. • Azure &ndash; Part 5 &ndash; Repository Pattern for Table Service

  In my last post I created a very simple WCF service with the user registration functionality. I created an entity for the user data and a DataContext class which provides some methods for operating the entities such as add, delete, etc. And in the service method I utilized it to add a new entity into the table service. But I didn’t have any validation before registering which is not acceptable in a real project. So in this post I would firstly add some validation before perform the data creation code and show how to use the LINQ for the table service.   LINQ to Table Service Since the table service utilizes ADO.NET Data Service to expose the data and the managed library of ADO.NET Data Service supports LINQ we can use it to deal with the data of the table service. Let me explain with my current example: I would like to ensure that when register a new user the email address should be unique. So I need to check the account entities in the table service before add. If you remembered, in my last post I mentioned that there’s a method in the TableServiceContext class – CreateQuery, which will create a IQueryable instance from a given type of entity. If it has I through an exception back to the client side. Let’s run it and test from my simple client application. Oops! Looks like we encountered an unexpected exception. It said the “Count” is not support by the ADO.NET Data Service LINQ managed library. That is because the table storage managed library (aka. TableServiceContext) is based on the ADO.NET Data Service and it supports very limit LINQ operation. Although I didn’t find a full list or documentation about which LINQ methods it supports I could even refer a page on msdn here. It gives us a roughly summary of which query operation the ADO.NET Data Service managed library supports and which doesn't. As you see the Count method is not in the supported list. Not only the query operation, there inner lambda expression in the Where method are limited when using the ADO.NET Data Service managed library as well. For example if you added (a => !a.DateDeleted.HasValue) in the Where method to exclude those deleted account it will raised an exception said "Invalid Input". Based on my experience you should always use the simple comparison (such as ==, >, <=, etc.) on the simple members (such as string, integer, etc.) and do not use any shortcut methods (such as string.Compare, string.IsNullOrEmpty etc.). 1: // validation 2: var accountNumber = accountContext.Load() 3: .Where(a => a.Email == accountToAdd.Email) 4: .ToList() 5: .Count; 6: if (accountNumber > 0) 7: { 8: throw new ApplicationException(string.Format("Your account {0} had been used.", accountToAdd.Email)); 9: } We changed the a bit and try again. Since I had created an account with my mail address so this time it gave me an exception said that the email had been used, which is correct.   Repository Pattern for Table Service The AccountDataContext takes the responsibility to save and load the account entity but only for that specific entity. Is that possible to have a dynamic or generic DataContext class which can operate any kinds of entity in my system? Of course yes. Although there's no typical database in table service we can threat the entities as the records, similar with the data entities if we used OR Mapping. As we can use some patterns for ORM architecture here we should be able to adopt the one of them - Repository Pattern in this example. We know that the base class - TableServiceContext provide 4 methods for operating the table entities which are CreateQuery, AddObject, UpdateObject and DeleteObject. And we can create a relationship between the enmity class, the table container name and entity set name. So it's really simple to have a generic base class for any kinds of entities. The table name, entity set name would be the same as the name of the entity class. The Load method returned a generic IQueryable instance which supports the lazy load feature. Then in my service class I changed the AccountDataContext to DynamicDataContext and that's all. 1: var accountContext = new DynamicDataContext<Account>(storageAccount); Run it again and register another account. The DynamicDataContext now can be used for any entities. For example, I would like the account has a list of notes which contains 3 custom properties: Account Email, Title and Content. I didn't implement any list service to show all notes but we can have a look on the local SQL database if we ran it at local development fabric.   Summary In this post I explained a bit about the limited LINQ support for the table service. And then I demonstrated about how to use the repository pattern in the table service data access layer and make the DataContext dynamically. The DynamicDataContext I created in this post is just a prototype. In fact we should create the relevant interface to make it testable and for better structure we'd better separate the DataContext classes for each individual kind of entity. So it should have IDataContextBase<T>, DataContextBase<T> and for each entity we would have class AccountDataContext<Account> : IDataContextBase<Account>, DataContextBase<Account> { … } class NoteDataContext<Note> : IDataContextBase<Note>, DataContextBase<Note> { … }   Besides the structured data saving and loading, another common scenario would be saving and loading some binary data such as images, files.   I have multiple entities like Hotels, Destination Cities etc which can contain images. The way I have my system setup right now is, I think of all the images belonging to this universal set (a table in the DB contains filePaths to all the images). When I have to add an image to an entity, I see if the entity exists in this universal set of images. If it exists, attach the reference to this image, else create a new image. E.g.: class ImageEntityHibernateDAO { public void addImageToEntity(IContainImage entity, String filePath, String title, String altText) { ImageEntity image = this.getImage(filePath); if (image == null) image = new ImageEntity(filePath, title, altText); getSession().beginTransaction(); entity.getImages().add(image); getSession().getTransaction().commit(); } } My question is: Earlier I had to write this code for each entity (and each entity would have a Set collection). So, instead of re-writing the same code, I created the following interface: public interface IContainImage { Set<ImageEntity> getImages(); } Entities which have image collections also implements IContainImage interface.   I'm trying to install .NET 3.5 on my Windows 8 box and it keeps throwing Error 0x800f0922 at me. From what I've read on answers.microsoft.com and StackOverflow I gather the easiest way to fix this is to perform a system refresh, however this will remove all software I've installed from discs. I've just moved house, so I'd rather not do that as I don't know where all the installation media actually are for a lot of my software, so if possible I'd prefer to track down where the problem is actually occurring. (Also, I have a LOT of software installed. It'd take me a long time to reinstall it all, and I unfortunately haven't got that time.) The on-demand error screen sends me to KB2734782 (can't link it as I'm <10 rep), which doesn't help much. • What would cause Google Music Manager to report different amounts of music between iTunes and My Music?

  If I set Google Music Manager to scan iTunes, it reports that there are 3997 songs (which is also indicated if I were to open iTunes and look at my collection). However, if set Google Music Manager to scan My Music folder, it detects 3999 songs. I even deleted all of my songs from iTunes and reimported my My Music folder. iTunes is still reporting 3997 songs. Is there an easy way to find out what is causing the difference between the two counts? I could probably add all of my songs to a playlist, export the playlist into a text or XML file using iTunes, and compare that list against everything in My Music folder to see if iTunes is missing music. However, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this before I did that...

  Hi there, I recently installed Ubuntu on a laptop I got. I was having issues with the network manager just like I was having in my VM where it was not setting up the hostname correctly. Anyhow now I have a problem, since it is a laptop it will be moving.... But I have no way to discover new wireless networks. Anyway I can gain that functionality back? The problem I am running into is that I need to set the DNS search and domain for the machine so I can access my network but the network-manager was overriding the settings. • How can I retrieve data from a Western Digital Passport External Disk which is not getting recognized but getting shown as healthy in Device manager

  When I plug in this external harddisk It is not getting shown in the My Computer. But it gets shown perfectly well in the Device Manager When I go into the Computer Administrative panel and into the disk manager it asks me to initialize the disk Now when I try to initialize it, regardless of the method I try it shows me an error "Incorrect Function" As you can see windows tells me it is working properly.   When I try to add a new item to my EntitySet, I'm getting this exception: An entity with the same identity already exists in this EntitySet However, when I inspect the EntitySet its count is 0. Any ideas why I would be getting this error when the set is empty? How could an entity already exist in the set if the set has no items in it?

  Folks, Im using MSCRM 4 and I have a contact entity with an actual job title and a normalized job title field. I would like to populate the normalized job title field based on the actual job title. I created a seperate entity which is a table that corelates the nomalized job title with the actual job title eg Administrative CFO equals CFO. I guess this needs to be done via an on-load or on-save script But I cant figure out how to do it. Any help would be much appreciated Regards Joe ( Scotland)

  I have this strange behavior. Im Loading some entities in a List< and append to a grid. When double click the grid i take the row cast to the entity and append to a property. I have changed some things in my database and code and now i get this exception while i never wanted to check something on this Entity Reference. Any Ideas?
