• vSphere Client vCenter Template Customization Specification Using Windows Sysprep Unattended Answer XML File

  I'm trying to setup a vSphere Client vCenter v5.0.0 Build 455964 Template Customization Specification using a Windows Sysprep unattended answer XML file for Win2008R2. However I didn't know how Sysprep worked before attempting this so it was a time-consuming nightmare (even after reviewing VMware vSphere ESXi 5's documentation)! I think I've figure out what I'm supposed to be doing, but it's still not working. The biggest problem at this point is that vSphere Client vCenter Customization Specification IP address information is not sticking when I load a Sysprep XML file with just 1 basic setting! This can only be a bug. Here is the process I'm using: PROCESS for Windows - vSphere Client Install Windows OS install VM Tools customize Windows (GPOs can be used to do this after deployment) install Applications (GPOs can be used to do this after deployment too) shutdown the VM convert the VM to a template create a custom Windows Sysprep XML answer file with desired customizations View Management Customization Specifications Manager create "New" Specification for "Target Virtual Machine OS" select Windows check "Use Custom Sysprep Answer File" (ADDS: Custom Sysprep File. KEEPS: Network (IP), Operating System Options (SID, Sysprep /generalize). • Windows 7 is shutting down unexpectedly, according to the logs.

  Here's a message from my eventvwr EventLog (Windows Logs System): The previous system shutdown at 11:51:15 AM on ?7/?29/?2009 was unexpected. This is funny because I was wondering why the system shut down while I was playing Civilizations IV full screen. Now I know. It was unexpected. Has anyone encountered and resolved this? A little background: I am running Windows 7 RC inside VMWare Fusion 2 (just updated a few months back) on a MacBook (Bitterly not Pro) aluminum-body. Windows 7 occasionally will shut down. This isn't a quick turn-off, it's a shutdown where all the programs are exited, the system waits until they quit (and Civ4 doesn't prompt me to save), it even installed Windows Updates before restarting. And yes it is restarting right after the shutdown. Because I run a game in full screen mode I do not notice any dialog with a countdown timer or anything like that that might be a warning. As I have iStat on my dashboard widgets I can see about 8 temperature monitors. I have seen the CPU get up to 74C before, but during the shutdown, though it seemed hot to the touch (always is), it read 61C for the CPU, 60C for heatsink A, 50C for heatsink B and in the 30s-40s for the enclosure and harddrives. As I type this now, the temps are actually higher, so I don't think the temperature caused it. I have at least six such events dating first from 5/17 which was a week after installing Windows 7. I did find one information level warning from USER32 in the system log that says: The process C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (DLAMBLIN-WIN7) has initiated the restart of computer DLAMBLIN-WIN7 on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned) Reason Code: 0x80020002 Shutdown Type: restart Comment: And another 15 minutes before that from Windows Update: Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes: - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB972260) Which I think kind of explains it. Though I don't know why restarting after an update would create an error event of "shutdown was unexpected", isn't that pretty odd? Now, how do I set it to never restart after an update unless I click something. Application of solution: As fretje reminded me, there's a couple of configurable settings for this, in windows 7 they're much in the same place as in Windows 2000 SP3 and XP SP1. Running gpedit.msc pops up a window that looks like: Windows 7 has changed the order and added a couple of newer options I've italicized: Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' in Shut Down Windows dialog box Do not adjust default option to 'Install Updates and Shut Down' in Shut Down Windows dialog box Enabling Windows Power Management to automatically wake up the system to install scheduled updates Configure Automatic Updates Specify intranet Microsoft update service location Automatic Updates detection frequency Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications Turn on Software Notifications Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation Turn on recommended updates via Automatic Updates No auto-restart with logged-on users for scheduled Automatic Updates Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations. • How to calculate CPU % based on raw CPU ticks in SNMP

  According to http://net-snmp.sourceforge.net/docs/mibs/ucdavis.html#scalar_notcurrent ssCpuUser, ssCpuSystem, ssCpuIdle, etc are deprecated in favor of the raw variants (ssCpuRawUser, etc). The former values (which don't cover things like nice, wait, kernel, interrupt, etc) returned a percentage value: The percentage of CPU time spent processing user-level code, calculated over the last minute. This object has been deprecated in favour of 'ssCpuRawUser(50)', which can be used to calculate the same metric, but over any desired time period. The raw values return the "raw" number of ticks the CPU spent: The number of 'ticks' (typically 1/100s) spent processing user-level code. On a multi-processor system, the 'ssCpuRaw*' counters are cumulative over all CPUs, so their sum will typically be N*100 (for N processors). My question is: how do you turn the number of ticks into percentage? That is, how do you know how many ticks per second (it's typically — which implies not always — 1/100s, which either means 1 every 100 seconds or that a tick represents 1/100th of a second). I imagine you also need to know how many CPUs there are or you need to fetch all the CPU values to add them all together. I can't seem to find a MIB that gives you an integer value for # of CPUs which makes the former route awkward. The latter route seems unreliable because some of the numbers overlap (sometimes). For example, ssCpuRawWait has the following warning: This object will not be implemented on hosts where the underlying operating system does not measure this particular CPU metric. This time may also be included within the 'ssCpuRawSystem(52)' counter. Some help would be appreciated. Everywhere seems to just say that % is deprecated because it can be derived, but I haven't found anywhere that shows the official standard way to perform this derivation. The second component is that these "ticks" seem to be cumulative instead of over some time period. How do I sample values over some time period? The ultimate information I want is: % of user, system, idle, nice (and ideally steal, though there doesn't seem to be a standard MIB for this) "currently" (over the last 1-60s would probably be sufficient, with a preference for smaller time spans).

• VB6 Scheduled tasks on Windows Server 2008 Standard

  Hello, this is my first time using this forum. Here is my situation: We are having issues with specific tasks written in VB6 it would seem. I am not a developer, but I am told these tasks exe are written in VB6. The task is initiated by task scheduler, the process begins to run (you can view the task in task manager, but no resources are used, 00 CPU, 760 K RAM), but nothing occurs. In a normal operating situation, the task will use 25% CPU and up to 20 MB RAM. When the task fails to run, you can still end and start it via Task Scheduler, but nothing happens. If you run just the process via the exe, it runs fine. The problem just seems to be when it is initiated via Task Scheduler. And this is a random issue, which always disappears after a server reboot. All of these tasks are VB 6 applications on Windows Server 2008 Standard, some servers are SP1, some are SP2, but both versions experience the issue. The task has been configured to run with highest priviledges, and to run whether logged on or not. Setting compatibility mode on the exe to 2003 does not make a difference. Situation 1: 51 - ERROR - Program did not appear to complete, check server!! (Desc: Input past end of file) in this situation, the task is running in task scheduler and you can view the process in task manager. . In the log file, all that is logged is: 12/17/2009 03:16 Starting T2 Populator version - 1.0.12 You can just end the task via task scheduler and start it via task scheduler and away it goes Situation 2: 36 - ERROR - Program last ran on 16-Dec-2009 in this situation the task is running in Task Scheduler and you can view the process in task manager, but no resources are used, 00 CPU, 760 K RAM. Nothing is logged in the log file. You end the task via task scheduler, but you must manually run the exe for it to complete. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced issues with VB6 tasks, or any tasks for that matter, on Server 2008?

• How to reinstall OEM Windows 98 SE?

  I'm trying to install Windows 98 SE on an old PC and it's not going well. I run into this problem. Searching for Boot Record from Floppy..OK Starting Windows 98... TOSHIBA Enhanced-IDE CD/DVD-ROM Device Driver (ATAPI) Version 2.24 (C)Copyright Toshiba Corp. 1995-1999. All rights reserved. Device Name : TOSCD001 Number of units : 1 MSCDEX Version 2.25 Copyright (C) MIcrosoft Corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved. Drive Z: = Driver TOSCD001 unit 0 TOSHIBA MACHINE Invalid drive specification Path not found - C:\TOOLS\CDROMDRV.SYS Invalid drive specification Invalid drive specification After that last line, it leaves me at a bitmap image displaying instructions to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del. It doesn't say why I have to reboot, and it doesn't state any error type, it just want's me to reboot for no apparent reason. After reboot, it just boots up from Floppy again and it cycles through the same thing all over again. The computer has been restored to original specification. Original system recovery "CD-ROM" discs are available and they are not scratched or anything, they are in very good condition. It's a set of 3 CDs, and the first disc labeled "1/3" should be the one holding the OEM version of Windows 98 SE. There is also a boot disk for Windows 98. I'm not sure what the other two discs are for. This computer came with three language support, so those could be holding different language versions or additional OEM discs. But I'm quite sure that the first disc holds the main operating system. BIOS has been set to optimized defaults. Boot priority is as follows; Floppy, IDE-0, CD-ROM. Under Standard CMOS settings, BIOS scans and autoconfigures both the hard drive and the CD/DVD drive. On POST it finds them both, and it finds the DOS bootdisk and starts preparing for installation, as you can see above. So what's this "invalid drive specification" about? Why isn't the installation starting? Updates Update 1 Booting from CD disc 2 In desperation I tried booting from the second CD. Boot order was; Floppy, CD-ROM, IDE-0. It boots normally from floppy disk, just like above, but then returns following. File not found - Z:\3LNGINST\TOOLS\PARTINFO.TXT I accidentally pressed some key on the keyboard, and before I knew it, the following screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Verifying drive integrity, 16% complete. After completion another screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS Partition and make the partition active (Y/N)?....................? [Y] Verifying drive integrity, 7% complete. I didn't choose Yes, it was set automatically. After completion the computer was automatically rebooted. Then I got a new screen. This is in Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish. Here's the message in Swedish. Hårddisken är inte klar för återställning av programvara. Installationsprogrammet måste skapa nya partitioner (C:, D:, ...). VARNING! ALLT INNEHÅLL PÅ HÅRDDISKEN KOMMER ATT RADERAS! Tryck på en tangent om du vill fortsätta (eller CTRL-C för att avbryta). Let me translate that. Hard drive is not ready for restoring the software. Setup program has to create new partitions (C:, D:, ...). WARNING! ALL CONTENTS ON THE HARD DRIVE WILL BE ERASED! Press any key to continue (or CTRL-C to cancel). I pressed Enter and it started formatting the hard drive. WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE c: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)?y Formatting 14,67.53M 1 percent completed. It automatically sets the "y" option and starts formatting. Rebooting with CD disc 1 After completing this operation it rebooted automatically. I inserted CD disc 1 and there was no issue with "invalid drive specification" anymore. Instead, a bitmap menu was displayed where it asked me to choose a language. And I thought I had it there for a while but it didn't work out. After choosing the language, another menu was displayed asking me to choose a type of recovery (restore pre-installed software OR restore hard drive partitions and pre-installed software). I opted for the second option. Then a data destruction warning showed up where I just pressed 1 to Continue. It did something and then just rebooted and the same formatting screen shows up as before. So something is not right. Am I doing it wrong? I seem to have come past the CD-ROM driver issue at least. But now I'm stuck with this problem... it seems to have something to do with the hard drive. Like... why is is it always trying to format it? Isn't it enough to format it once? By the way, it needs to be formatted as FAT32, right? Windows 98 doesn't support NTFS? I think FDISK should have taken care of this already. I know this is an old hard drive, but I connected to my main computer and it was able to read and write to it without a problem. It does have bad sectors though, but it's expected on an old hard drive like this. Any ideas?.. Update 2 I seem to be repeatedly getting stuck at the format screen where it asks to press any key to continue. So tried to cancel it this time with Ctrl+C. This leaves me at: A:\TOOLS> I can do DIR and CD and I tried to change to Z: drive. I tried running "setup" but there is no such thing. Solution #2 Rik proposed to run Z:\setup. Now that I have found a way to drop to DOS prompt with Ctrl+C as described above (Update 2), I did try running setup but there is no such command or file in there. So that didn't work.

• VMware Workstation reboot 32-bit host when starting 32/64-bit guest using VT-x

  I'm trying to start 64-bit guest (MacOSX and Windows7) on 32-bit host (Hardened Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.6.28-hardened-r9) using VMware Workstation (6.5.3.185404 and 7.0.1.227600). If VT-X disabled in BIOS, VMware refuse to start 64-bit guest (as expected). If VT-X enabled in BIOS, VMware start guest without complaining, but then, in about a second (I suppose as soon as guest try to switch on 64-bit) my host reboots (actually, it's more like reset - normal reboot procedure skipped and BIOS POST start immediately). My hardware is Core 2 Duo 6600 on ASUS P5B-Deluxe with latest stable BIOS 1101. I've power-cycled system, then enabled Vanderpool in BIOS. My CPU doesn't support Trusted Execution Technology, and there no way to disable it in BIOS. I've rebooted several times after that, sometimes with power-cycled, and ensure Vandertool is enabled in BIOS. I've also run VMware-guest64check-5.5.0-18463 tool, and it report "This host is capable of running a 64-bit guest operating system under this VMware product.". About a year ago I tried to disable hardened in kernel to ensure this isn't because of PaX/GrSecurity, but that doesn't help. I have not checked 32-bit guests with VT-X enabled yet, but without VT-X they works ok. ASUS provide "beta" BIOS updates, but according to their descriptions these updates doesn't fix this issue, so I'm not sure is it good idea to try it. My best guess now it's motherboard/BIOS bug. Any ideas? Update 1: I've tried to boot vt.iso provided at http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8978 and here is it report: CPU 0: VT is enabled on this core CPU 1: VT is enabled on this core Update 2: I've just tried to boot 32-bit guests (Windows7, Ubuntu9.04 and Gentoo) using all possible virtualization modes. In Automatic, Automatic with Replay, Binary translation everything works, in Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI I got message "This host does not support EPT. Using software virtualization with a software MMU." and everything works. BUT in Intel VT-x or AMD-V mode all 32-bit guests reset host just like 64-bit guests! So, this issue is not specific to 64-bit guests. One more thing. Using Intel VT-x or AMD-V mode for both 32/64-bit guests my host reset right after starting VM, i.e. before VM BIOS POST and before guest even start booting. But using Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI VM BIOS runs ok, then 64-bit guests start booting (Windows7 completed "Loading files" progressbar), and only after that host reset.

• VMWare Network bug in multiple VMWare Workstation versions if using a hardcoded IP address

  I'm having a very tricky problem with some of my VM sessions being unable to reach the Internet or even ping the gateway. I have just set up a new VM Workstation (7) on a W2K8 64bit server (I'll be converting to ESXI 4 once I can find a decent book on it, so for the meanwhile I use workstation). I have imported a number of VM's and setup some new ones on the server.In short the problem with some of the VM's being unable to reach the Internet is that they can't reach the gateway. I've looking at a number of things and can pretty safely rule out the following: Switch, Router, DHCP Server, DNS, Client IP configuration, Routes and typos. The problem is that some of the new clients cannot reach the gateway if their IP address is hardcoded, they can't even ping it by IP address. That rules out DNS and DHCP. Now, if I allow them to get their IP address by DHCP they can reach the gateway and Internet without issue. The interesting thing on this, is that this behavior occurs even if I leave the DNS information hardcoded under TCP/IP settings. It doesn't work unless the IP and gateway are handed out by DHCP even though the same information IP info is being used by the host. Fundamentally from the standpoint of the clients, they are trying to reach the exact same gateway using the exact same IP information regardless of whether they are hardcoded or assigned by DHCP. Here's an example of one client. IP Address 192.168.7.66 - Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 - Gateway 192.168.7.254 - DNS1 192.168.7.44 - DNS2 192.168.7.254. The issue occurs across six different microsoft operating systems, Windows 7 and Windows 2008 variants all have the issue. My W2K3, XP, Vista and W98 clients all work without issue with hardcoded IP addresses. I have tried things like rearranging the DNS order, flushing DNS and so on. It's not a routing or switch issue as the clients can work just fine if they get their IP by DHCP. It's not a paramater issue as the exact same paramaters are handed out by DHCP as I plug in by hand. It's not a DNS issue as clients cant reach other clients even with IP addresses only. I have run a tracert to the gateway by IP address and it times out on the very first hop before failing on hop3 with destination host unreachable. If I get the IP address by DHCP the tracert finds the gateway (and Internet) without issue. I have read a few other posts online in forums talking about this problem randomly occuring over the years in other VM versions as well, so I suspect some kind of long standing bug. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Is it possibly a bug with Windows 7 and W2K clients under VM?

• [Windows 7] Certain Programs cannot access internet

  Operating System: Windows 7 (x64) Problem: Certain Programs are unable to access the internet. They claim that there is no connection when you already are connected. Hello, before we start. Just letting you know I'm new here, and I'm very new to Windows 7. I installed it two days ago. I just installed Windows 7 on my laptop and I have a few problems. I play World of Warcraft, as well as a variety of games. And when I first attempt to log into the game, I get a windows error message, but it doesn't stop there. I thought World of Warcraft got corrupted during the upgrade. It seems that I am unable to access the internet from other online games as well. Most say in along the lines of "Cannot connect to patch server, try again later." I cannot use a downloader Also, I have internet explorer. The x32 version of the browser cannot connect to the internet, and when I try to enter "google.com", it says the same thing. I'm only accessing this site through Internet Explorer x64, which I would have been fine with is it's compatible with Adobe Flash. The only thing that seems to connect to the internet are Internet Explorer x64 and Windows Live Messenger. Here are the steps I have taken, but none worked. 1.) Disable Windows Firewall 2.) Have Windows Firewall Enabled, but allow the specific programs to access internet. And allowed all incoming access. 3.) Disabled UAC, Ran the programs as an admin, and set compatibility to Vista. 4.) Uninstalled an anti-virus program. (McAffee Security Suite 2010) 5.) Reinstalled the programs 6.) Reinstalled Windows 7 7.) Retaken the steps on the Administrator account. Please assist me in this problem. I need to get back into the game. Thanks so much in advance.

• Windows Vista: Networking can only connect "local only"

  I am attempting to debug a problem on a Windows Vista laptop - not mine! Until just recently (last week or so), it was operating normally for about 4 years :) The problem is that I am having issues connecting to the local network (a basic wireless home router; more later) and the internet (via ADSL). This is both for wired [Broadcom chipset] and wireless [Intel chipset]. I will elaborate further later. To detail the network. I have three other clients (HTC phone, Ubuntu 12.04 desktop [wired] and Ubuntu 10.04 laptop [wireless]), all of whom are able to connect to the network and internet normally. A windows 7 virtual machine running on said desktop connects normally. I have tried two different wireless routers - Netgear DG834G and Netgear DGN3500. The same error mode is common to both. Updating the firmware to the latest on both routers does not help. Overall, it seems safe to say it's localised to the laptop in question. I do not have another Vista client to test with. The specific symptoms are as follows: When "connected", it says "Local Only", and says it cannot connect to the internet. This is true for both wired and wireless. It can get an IP address (192.168.0.5), and the router (192.168.0.1) reports that it can see the device. When I try to ping, I get the following results: ping 192.168.0.1 - (router) all packets lost ping 192.168.0.5 - (laptop's address) OK ping 192.168.0.4 - (desktop) all packets lost Pinging from the desktop to the problematic laptop results in "From 192.168.0.4 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable" The most promising "fix" from trawling forums is KB928233 which does not work for me. The problem is persistent across reports (both full shutdown and hibernate) so it appears not to be sleep related. I am not a regular vista user, though I can fumble my way about a bit. Is there any other suggestions as to what I should do? Is there any further information I can provide?

• How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works.   New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. • VMWare ESXi virtual machine can contact the gateway but not the DNS server

  I am having a bit of a strange issue. I have a VMWare ESXi server with two virtual machines running on it. They are running just fine and can communicate on the network without a problem. I am now trying to add a third. I am installing Ubuntu 8.04 Server. I assign it a static IP address and it's a fresh installation. Once installed I can ping the gateway but I cannot ping the DNS server. It's on the same network with the other two VMs which are communicating just fine. I have tried to reinstall the operating system but it still fails to connect. • HP F2180 driver installation fails on 64-bit Windows 7

  Hello; I am trying to install the HP Deskjet AIO (non-network) driver on my machine, which is running the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Before installing it, Windows detected my printer just fine... But I wanted to use the HP scanning application, because tt allows me to scan several photos at once. I ran the DJ_AIO_NonNetwork_ENU_NB file I got from their site, and the installation went almost without a problem... However, at the part where it should have detected the printer, it didn't, so I skipped it - telling the installer I'll connect the printer later. After it was finished I was able to use it regularly, and also scan using the wanted HP application. However, the installer kept popping at random intervals, and giving me an error message. Yesterday I tried removing all the installed HP Applications, and installing from scratch. Running the same installer setup, it now insists that it does not support my operating system, and that 64-bit Vista is the highest it can go... I just don't understand why this is occuring all of the sudden. Has anybody here successfully installed the AIO driver on the 64-bit version of Windows 7? UPDATE: Been chatting with HP chat support over the weekend. Managed to really mess up my windows. At first, they told me to uninstall using an "unintall_l3" batch file inside their installer package, and then reinstall. Didn't work. Also the "l4" batch didn't make any difference. Afterwards I was told to install "Windows install clean up" and remove many hp entries (most of which were not listed on my computer), and I also removed many other hp entries I bumped upon. Then my office 2k7 started failing. I searched around the web, and ran Security Restore, so now my office works, but my windows explorer is all buggy - can't seem to open windows explorer - it hangs while trying to load my hard drives, or completely ignores them and just shows my libraries. Anyone here has any idea how I can restore my win7 to normal, with or without the annoying scanner? UPDATE 2: Ok - explorer back to normal. I guess I just had to wait until it finishes searching while opening the windows explorer for the first time after the Security Restore. Scanner still not working though.

• Preinstalled Windows 8 and Linux UEFI dual boot on a laptop

  I am trying to set up Windows 8 and Arch Linux on a new Sony Vaio E14 with preinstalled windows 8. So far: installed W8 to my new SSD (switched for the original HDD) using Recovery Media shrunk the W8 partition, deleted recovery partition, disabled swap confirmed W8 booting just fine On to Arch: disabled Secure Boot in bios confirmed W8 booting just fine Booted Arch off the CD and installed everything to 4th and 5th partition set up rEFInd for EFIstub kernel bootloader After that it got worse. I was unable to boot anything else than Windows 8 (although I was glad that they at least kept working just fine). Tried: creating EFI\refind\ and putting the .efi there (as per Arch manual overwriting EFI\boot\bootx64.efi overwriting EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgr.efi overwriting EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi --- YAY rEFInd shown up! So far, so good. I've kept the whole W8 Boot\ directory in EFI\windows8 and set up a boot menuentry for it; and it booted just fine. But, upon restart, everything was wrong -- 'Operating system not found' instead of any bootloader (refind or w8). Booted back into Arch using the live CD to find out that the EFI partition had erroneous FAT table. fsck.vfat fixed it, and I've found that EFI\Microsoft\Boot was back to it's original state (all refind files deleted and replaced with W8 bootloaders). I've overwritten them again and got back to rEFInd showing up correctly and Arch being perfectly bootable. After that I've tried only renaming EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi to bootmgfw.001.efi (then copying refind's .efi to bootmgfw.efi and keeping EVERY OTHER file as it was), but with exactly the same result. Tried marking the GPT EFI partition as read-only, same result. Now I'm kinda out of luck. Arch boots fine, so does W8 but it destroys the EFI partition in the process. Thanks for any ideas, Googling brought me this far and I can't find any better. PS -- windows 8 MAYBE destroys the partition upon shutdown -- when I order a shutdown in W8, it takes unusually long (about half a minute instead of ~5 seconds). So in theory I could solve this by hard-resetting the laptop instead of a normal shutdown, but that's just not nice.

• File/printer sharing issues on network with multiple OSes

  My workplace consists of computers running a variety of different operating systems, and I have been running into problems getting some of them to connect to a shared drive and printer over the network. Here is a brief description of the computers involved and the issues I have encountered: 1: Dell desktop, Windows Vista Business-- This is the computer I want the others to connect to. It has a USB printer and eSATA hard drive enclosure that I have set up for sharing, with different accounts for the various users. 2: Fujitsu laptop, Windows XP Tablet edition-- No problems. Can connect to both the shared printer and hard drive. 3: Lenovo laptop, Windows Vista Business 64 bit-- No problems. Can connect to both the shared printer and drive. 4: Apple MacBook, OS 10.4-- Can connect to the shared drive, but not to the shared printer. I am aware that the printer issue is due to a known incompatibility between Vista and OS 10.4 and earlier with regards to Samba. It is not a big problem, however, as this computer can access a network printer. 5: Sony laptop, Windows Vista Home Premium-- Can connect to the shared printer, but not the shared drive. It can see computer 1 and its shared drive on the network, and appears to successfully log in to user accounts. However, if you try to access the shared drive, it says you do not have permission. I have tried both standard and administrator accounts, and none can access the drive from this computer. 6: MacBook Pro, OS 10.5 (there are two of these)-- Can connect to the shared printer, but not the shared drive. They can't see computer 1 on the network. For that matter, they also can't see each other or the older Mac, but can see and access shared folders on the XP machine (computer 2) and can see other PCs in the building. I was able to add the shared printer manually by typing in its network location, but was unable to manually add the shared drive in the same way. So, what I am looking for is suggestions on how to get computers 5 and 6 to connect to the shared drive. Since they can already connect to the shared printer (which is on the same computer as the shared drive), it seems reasonable that they should be able to access the drive as well.

I run a script on start up which exhibits similar but slightly different problems. The script is located in /etc/init.d/start-mystuff.sh and calls a jar: #!/bin/bash # /etc/init.d/start-mystuff.sh java -jar /opt/Mars.jar I can confirm that the script runs on start up and the exit code is 127, which indicates command not found. Inserting a line to print/save the PATH shows that it is: /sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin This second problem isn't as important because I can just point directly to the Java executable in the script, but I am still curious! I have tried setting the full PATH and JAVA_HOME explicitly in /etc/environment which didn't help. I have also tried setting them in /etc/profile which doesn't seem to help either. I have tried logging in and out again after setting PATH in the various locations (duh!). Anyway, long post for what will probably have a simple one line solution :( Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, I have spent far too long trying to fix it by myself. Motivation The first problem may seem obscure but in my system I have users that are not allowed SSH access yet I still want to run processes as them. I have a ton of scripts operating in this way and don't want to have to change them all.

  I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks. When I physically install the card I put it into a purple slot on the motherboard that the old card was in (if I go into the device manager and select properties on the current card it confirms that the slot is a "PCI Slot 16 (PCI bus 2, device 0, function 0)") and boot up the computer but get absolutely no output. The screen that we have registers that it is connected to something (by not displaying the screen it does when the cable is unplugged) but just remains blank, no output at all. I recently took the card to my University and one of my friends who is better with hardware issues than I am tried it in his system and it worked perfectly. No issues whatsoever. I do not have a spec list for his system but I could get one if you need it. If you need any more information on this issue I will be happy to supply you with it as I am starting to get very annoyed with this problem ^_^

• Looking for a new backup solution to replace dying tape drive

  We're running Windows Server 2003 SBS and another machine with Server 2003 Standard on it. The SBS server is about 7 years old running pretty much 24/7 - a HP server of some description. We have an Ultrium 448 cycling LTO2 400GB tapes daily and incrementally backing up approximately 100gb worth of data (20gb C:\ and system state, 40gb exchange, 40gb database for some crap marketing software) on BackupExec 10D. As of 5 months ago, the backups have been consistently failing with IO errors, bad reads and some write errors. When I say consistent, I mean every time and we haven't had a proper backup for the entire 5 months - So if the server explodes tomorrow, 7 years worth of data will just cease to exist. I've only just recently rejoined the company and am looking at rectifying the more concerning problems, so the first thing I did was try a backup to an USB2.0 external drive. It was excruciatingly slow. In fact it was so slow it took 40 hours and it still wasn't finished. I ended up cancelling it and reconfiguring the selections again to reduce file size. This, however, isn't a permanent solution. I concluded that the IO error was either from a faulty tape drive (which has a tape stuck in there right now and not coming out) or from a dying SCSI controller. Neither of them are good news and both are extremely expensive to fix. I'm operating on an extremely low budget so have been looking at outsourcing the backups. A company in Sydney (where I'm located) offer incremental online backups via a NAS. It costs almost double a new tape drive but offers monthly repayments which will let us get through times when cash flow is minimal. It seems like a sweet deal but it is still a little bit pricey. So I'm looking for a cheaper, yet reliable solution. Maybe some in-house NAS or something offsite? The idea is to avoid using tapes. Are there any recommendations for rectifying my current situation? Or are tapes the only way to go? I'm concerned that the server will die one day in the near future and I must be able to restore it to another server with different hardware.

Then, when it was finished, all the hardware changes I had made were lost. The RAM was changed from 2 GB back to the default of 1 GB, my CD ROM drive was set back to "Use a Physical Drive" and "Connect at Power On", and the Floppy Drive was also set to "Connect at Power On", after I disabled them. I was trying to install Windows 7, and I wasn't sure if I could change the RAM settings after installation without needing to reactivate it, so I deleted the VM and tried to start over. This time, the "Installer disc image" had my Win7 image pre-selected, so I clicked "I will install it myself later," set my hardware again, and tried to boot off my CD. Again,it did an Easy Install, and reset my RAM and my drive settings. So I deleted it again and the third time it still had the Win7 image pre-selected, but this time I unplugged all the drives and let it try to boot off the empty harddrive and fail, and made sure it kept all my hardware settings. Then, I powered it off, put my Win7 image in the guest CD ROM, and powered it on. This time it finally let me run the installer and pick my language, and type a user name. This time when I powered it off it kept my hardware settings. I can duplicate the error by doing exactly the steps above. Creating a new VM, selecting my "Installer Image," hitting next, going back, selecting "I will Install it myself," and then finish the wizard, and customizing my hardware right before the end, setting the CD Rom drive to the same installer media, and setting "Connect on Power On." (If I start it without the CD ROM in the first time, it doesn't do it). • usb mouse connecting and disconnecting randomly and often

  Yes, I know this question has been asked here before but I can't add to the discussion over there and it did not help me, so here goes nothing. I've bought an acer aspire 5742G about 2 months ago or so and it's been running great, but sometimes I used to hear the windows error beep but I had no idea what was causing it since the "bug" was automatically fixed so fast I couldn't even see an error message (also it kinda always happened when I was busy also, either in a game or while doing my homework). Later on my mouse would simply not work for 3-5 seconds then work again, I thought nothing of it at the time. I also had a problem where it only worked in one usb and one only ... to move it I had to remove the battery, unplug the laptop and hold the power button for 2 minutes to reset the bios settings. Since today though it went nuts ... sometimes it disconnects / reconnects 12 times in 10 seconds and windows just keeps beeping till I unplug it, then it runs smooth for 5-6 minutes then it goes nuts again. Other times it seems like it skips (disconnects for a fraction of a second) other times just for 2-3 seconds. But this is incredibly frustrating. Sometimes the power just goes down (the laser turns off) and well that at least I would understand but this is a rare occurance. Now I know the usb ports work since I have a lot of other devices connected and I tried the mouse on a room m8's laptop so the mouse also works. My only conclusion is that it's an operating system / settings bug and / or problem (I have tried the mouse in all ports by the way). All drivers and bios are up to date (maybe except mouse but i can't seem to update that and the mouse has no name, just a serial number which helps with nothing. Still it worked till today and nothing should have changed any way). I have made sure windows can't shut it down to save power (in device management). Also I tried to delete the drivers and re-install them, rebooting and the power button trick but nothing ... most I have done is get rid of the 12 discconnects / reconnects every 10 seconds :) but that's all :( I would buy a new one but I'm afraid it might do the same thing :| ****EDIT****** Tried the mouse again at a friend but now it didn't even install it's software nor did the update work ... think I'll just buy a new one but I'd still like a suggestion at least so I'll leave this open

  Operating System: Windows 7 (x64) Problem: Certain Programs are unable to access the internet. They claim that there is no connection when you already are connected. Hello, before we start. Just letting you know I'm new here, and I'm very new to Windows 7. I installed it two days ago. I just installed Windows 7 on my laptop and I have a few problems. I play World of Warcraft, as well as a variety of games. And when I first attempt to log into the game, I get a windows error message, but it doesn't stop there. I thought World of Warcraft got corrupted during the upgrade. It seems that I am unable to access the internet from other online games as well. Most say in along the lines of "Cannot connect to patch server, try again later." I cannot use a downloader Also, I have internet explorer. The x32 version of the browser cannot connect to the internet, and when I try to enter "google.com", it says the same thing. I'm only accessing this site through Internet Explorer x64, which I would have been fine with is it's compatible with Adobe Flash. The only thing that seems to connect to the internet are Internet Explorer x64 and Windows Live Messenger. Here are the steps I have taken, but none worked. 1.) Disable Windows Firewall 2.) Have Windows Firewall Enabled, but allow the specific programs to access internet. And allowed all incoming access. 3.) Disabled UAC, Ran the programs as an admin, and set compatibility to Vista. 4.) Uninstalled an anti-virus program. (McAffee Security Suite 2010) 5.) Reinstalled the programs 6.) Reinstalled Windows 7 7.) Retaken the steps on the Administrator account. Please assist me in this problem. I need to get back into the game. Thanks so much in advance.
